EJHV SAFE assessment plan

Intervention: survival planning

SAFE is an educational technology that seeks to:

Nov, 2014

contribute on developing a risk prevention culture

provide the educational community with an innovative and
interactive tool for preparedness
Involve community members in risk management

EJHV SAFE assessment plan

Learning goals

SAFE pretends that participants can get some skills related to

real disaster risk analysts.
After using SAFE, participants will be able to:

Identify threats and community's vulnerabilities.

Identify and evaluate disaster risks

Develop a risk map

Elaborate safety/prevention plans (family, school, work)

Nov, 2014

Recognize the importance of preparedness to face potential

disasters

EJHV SAFE assessment plan

Assessment design

Assessment categories to apply:

Meaningful context

Performance assessment (formative)

Participants own community characteristics and risks

Performance tasks

Nov, 2014

Participants will perform actual risk management activities,

where they will generate some products.
Participants will practice skills like: taking notes, each task
requires working with other participants, analyzing data,
developing hypothesis, giving an oral presentation of their
results.
EJHV SAFE assessment plan

SAFE process
Identify risks
What can happen?
How can it happen?

Establish the
context

Analyze risks

defines external and

internal influences

Determine likelihood
Determine consequences

Take action
Identify treatment strategies
Prepare action plan

Evaluate risks
making a decision about what
should be done about the risk

In order to make the experience closer to the real thing, the process is based on the international
standard for Risk Management ISO 31000:2009

Task structure (generic)

Activity goals are explained, base concepts presented.

As a group, participants must discuss and share their context
knowledge about the activity inputs (for example, for a set of
threats, they must have information about effects)

Each student must take notes about activity inputs.

Activity product is presented.

In small groups, participants develop the activity product.

Each group develops an oral presentation

Each participant makes adjustments to the activity product

As a group, products are reviewed and and compared to an

exemplary response.

SAFE products
Risk IAE
(identification, analysis
and evaluation)

Risk map

Prevention plans

These products are generated by participants during sessions. In order to help

participant to improve their products, an exemplary response must be
commented after the participants products presentation.

Performance criteria

Scoring criteria (Product)

2. Product is well organized, covers all required

points and adds significant and relevant details.

1. Product covers all required points.

0. Participant failed to attempt the product .

Scoring criteria (Activity)

Nov, 2014

1 point for each skill related to the activity.

Comments

I believe a performance assessment is ideal to

this kind of intervention, however is difficult to
imagine the reactions and engagement of
participants.
The data display must be a relationship
between learning goals and the
knowledge/skills related, but this is not easy to
achieve.
