From spaceships to cars, lifts to smartphones, ships to oil rigs, on land, air,

oceans, and even space mechanical engineering is everywhere. The foundation

that our modern world is built on is dominated by mechanical systems, and as a
mechanical engineer I will be able to learn, improve and develop these systems.
My fascination with mechanical engineering sources back to the first time I made
a plane out of paper. I was enchanted by the unique transformation of the
straight paper into a plane, and its complete change in character. My
accomplishment awakened the spirit of invention inside me. However, little did I
know that there was a remarkable amount relating to the shape, material and
environment that allowed the plane to fly. My hunger for knowledge only grew
as I learned more.
Soon after, the famous Mona Lisa introduced me to one of my major inspirations,
Leonardo da Vinci. His numerous achievements in engineering were profound
considering the limits to the resources and knowledge of the renaissance era, but
his discoveries and contributions to engineering were essential in shaping our
modern world. His work, along with many others, proves that there are
unlimited possibilities in the very diverse field of mechanical engineering.
I am currently taking further math, math, physics and chemistry. I completed my
AS level in economics. Further math has enhanced my problem solving and
logical thinking abilities. The beauty of math for me lies in all the capabilities of
numbers; how simple equations can become so complex but are able to explain
anything or everything. I equally enjoy the applied section of physics and
chemistry, as they too have been able to explain what was considered unknown,
and have become essential for improvement in research, hence life.
Having spent 2 weeks working at a firm that manufactures chemicals, I learnt the
basic processes that exist in the research and development industry, that is, how
an idea grows into a project in the lab and all the different experiments to
improve it before it moves into large-scale production. I also learnt about the
operation of a business, from when it obtains raw materials to marketing and the
finish of the products.
Creativity, passion and patience are skills essential for any engineer to have. I
have developed these elements. My passion for science is exhibited by my
participation in the national science congress at provincial level. I worked on an
agricultural project that pertained to an alternative source of fuel, we were one
of the two entries selected to represent the school. My creativity spans from my
interest in all genres of music (Classical, rock, hip-hop and electronic are my
favorites). I have passed grade 8 in piano and grade 3 in violin, both examined by
ABRSM. I also have a general enthrallment in art, literature and origami. I have
been the national champion for chess. The intellectually demanding sport has
taught me the importance of strategy and patience.
In addition to this, being the environmental prefect at my former school has
taught me responsibility, leadership skills and improved my ability to work as
part of a team. I have also been to the United Nations to participate in several

Model United Nations conferences. This has enhanced my oratory and social
skills as I met a lot of new people there. Giving back to the community is also
plays an important role in my life. As an active member of the charity
organization Stand Up Shout Out, I have raised money for and spent time with
less fortunate children, which were and are always very excited to have us.
The United Kingdom is my preferred choice for further study because of its wellestablished educational institutions, exciting lifestyle and wonderful landmarks.
I believe that this would be the ideal location to study mechanical engineering.
