Lesson Plan Integrating Technology

11/7/14
Ed Tech I

Standards:
Content Area: Social Studies
Consider different historians' analyses of the same event or development in
United States history to understand how different viewpoints and/or frames of
reference influence historical interpretations.
Evaluate the validity and credibility of historical interpretations of important
events or issues in New York State or United States history, revising the
interpretations as new information is learned and other interpretations are
developed.

Technology Standards:
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
o 1. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use
information from a variety of sources and media.
o 2. Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and
develop innovative products and processes using technology.

Lesson Objective(s):
Content Area:
Students will be taught about Abraham Lincoln and his important role in United
States history. I will portray all of the different viewpoints surrounding Abraham
Lincoln to my students.
Students will learn all of the different viewpoints.
Students will also learn the ideologies of the time period surrounding Abraham
Lincoln.
Students will learn how to interpret political cartoons based on Abraham Lincoln.
Students will learn how to correctly use primary and secondary sources based on
Abraham Lincoln, in order to prepare for an upcoming assignment.
Students will learn how to analyze, interpret, compare, and contrast these
sources in order to come up with their own conclusion in regards to Abraham
Lincoln.
Students will learn how to write an argumentative paper, using primary and
secondary sources to draw their conclusions.
Students will also learn how to cite their sources, using the Chicago Style Citation
format.
Technology:
Students will learn how to take and interpret relevant information from specific
types of digital media, such as documentaries.

Students will learn how to navigate a website and find relevant political
cartoons.
Students will learn how to use scholarly online database to research and analyze
sources based around Abraham Lincoln.
Students will learn how navigate and use a citation website in order to make a
bibliography for their argumentative essay.

Introduce the Learning Activity:

A.) Students will be told they are watching clips of video on Abraham Lincoln. I
will then share background information about the clips of video and why it was
made. I will also discuss the role of political cartoons in history and I will show
the students how to understand them. After watching the videos and discussing
the political cartoons, I will have the students break up into small groups and
discuss whether it was a good title. As the students are in small groups, the
teacher will be walking around facilitating discussion.

B.) I will provide a motivator by having the students look out for specific
quotations from Lincoln and have them jot them down. I will also provide leading
discussion questions about the political cartoons. I will get my students
interested in this lesson by providing the background in a manner that gets the
students thinking before the video is played.

Provide Information:

A.) In for this lesson to be effective, I will need to have all the definitions,
explanations, descriptions, procedures, examples, and samples prepared for this
lesson ahead of time. In order to do this I will put myself in the perspective of a
student learning this for the first time.I will also have all this information
available on my website and have the website available to my students.

Provide Practice:

A.) I will have the students go to the class resource website page. Students will
begin with a quick warm up lesson on how to search for scholarly sources using
online databases, that will be linked on my website page. I will have the students
play around on them and try to find sources on different viewpoints of Abraham
Lincoln. This will also give the students a lot of access to different definitions
surrounding Abraham Lincoln and the time period, which will give the students a
chance to ask me to define the ones they dont know.
Once every student finds a source that they think is relevant, have them open
the son of citation machine website ( www.citationmachine.net/chicago/cite-a-

book/edit ) and learn how to find and manually enter the important information
in order to correctly cite the journal. This will provide the students with practice
for later on in the lesson as well as for college.
After this, have the students open a Microsoft Word document. Have the
students title the page, Bibliography, and paste their citations. This will be the
start to creating a bibliography page for the paper they will be writing later.
Once every student is caught up on all of this information, have the students
break up into groups of 3 and go to a Political Cartoon website
(abrahamlincolnsclassroom.org/cartoon-corner/president-lincoln/) and find
political cartoons that have to do with different viewpoints of Abraham Lincoln.
o Once every group has a different cartoon, have each group share what
they discovered to the whole class.
This lesson will be incorporating technology because students will be spending a
lot of time navigating different websites and learning how to use online
databases and citation sites to do scholarly historical research.

Provide Knowledge of Results:

A.) I will provide verbal feedback to the students on their practice efforts by
giving them comments and criticisms on their individual and group work. For
example, after each group finishes presenting their analyzes of their political
cartoons, I will give them positive feedback as well any criticisms where they
could have looked at the cartoon differently. This will be done for every group
and will be a form of informal low-stakes grading. For individual feedback, I will
be walking around the room throughout the whole lesson, giving verbal
feedback on the students research using the online databases and their use of
the citation machines.
B.) I will provide written feedback to my students on their practice efforts by
grading the students on their use of the technology in this lesson. In this
example, the students will not be graded on their ability to effectively navigate
the websites, but instead I will grade the students on their participation and
their diligence throughout the lesson. Therefore, I will continually encourage my
students to actively participate throughout the lesson.

Review the Activity:

In order to review the activity, I will finish the lesson by having my students wrap
up the lesson. In this wrap up, I will have the students pick out the topics that
they thought were important. I will make sure that I guide the discussion in the
direction that I want it to go, as well as review the topics that I have deemed
important.

Method of Assessment:

I will assess the content by assessing the students participation in the

discussions. The lesson is set up in a way that it will reach each student because
with of the small group discussion, the individual work, and the classroom
discussion.
I will also be assessing the students by using a rubric, that I will create, to grade
their argumentative essay, which will be based on their research of Abraham
Lincoln that was taught in this lesson.
