Classroom Behaviors of Children with


Special Needs

PROBLEM BEHAVIORS
According to Robinson & Giesemer (2006), a behavior that is identified as

problematic depends on the teachers degree of tolerance as well as the


actual behavior

What one teacher considers disruptive may be acceptable or tolerated by


another teacher

PROBLEM BEHAVIORS
Problem behaviors are viewed as any behavior that violates or does not conform to
the established rules and standards of the classroom and/or the school.

Problem behaviors are observable behaviors a child displays that disrupts the
environment and often impact others negatively
(Bloomquist, 2006)

PROBLEM BEHAVIORS
In a classroom setting, teachers tend to notice only behaviors that appear too
much and undesirable
externalizing behaviors

Oftentimes, teachers fail to observe too little desirable behaviors internalizing


behaviors

Talking Out

Spoken words (positive, neutral or


negative) are directed at a peer or
teacher during inappropriate times

Out of Seat

The child fails to stay seated during


sitting activities

Attention Problem

The child fails to attend and stay focused


during independent or group work
activities

Disruption

The childs actions result in


consequences that appear to be
disruptive. Actions may either be
intentional or unintentional
