Drug - A substance other than food that changes the way the body or mind functions.
Drug misuse - The incorrect use of a prescription or OTC drug.
Drug abuse - The intentional use of a drug without medical or health reasons.
Dose - The amount of a drug that is taken at one time.
Prescription drug - A medicine that fights specific illnesses and infections and can be
obtained only with a prescription, a written order from a licensed health professional

pharmaceutical company
7. Generic-name drug - A drug that contains the same active ingredients as a brand-name drug.
8. Over-the-counter drug (OTC) - A drug that can be purchased without a prescription in stores
such as grocery stores or drugstores.
9. Tamper-resistant package - A package that is sealed to assure the buyer that the package has
not been opened previously.
10. Side effect - An unwanted body change that is not related to the main purpose of a drug.

Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) - The amount of alcohol in a persons blood.
Toxin - A substance that is poisonous.
Hazing activity - An activity in which a person is forced to participate in a dangerous or
demeaning act to become a member of a club or group.
5. Binge drinking - Consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short amount of time.
6. Cirrhosis - A disease of the liver caused by chronic damage to liver cells.
7. Blackout - A period in which a person cannot remember what has happened.

10. Delirium tremens syndrome - A severe form of alcohol withdrawal syndrome in which there
are hallucinations and muscle convulsions.

Nicotine - A stimulant drug found in tobacco products


Tobacco - An herbal plant that is grown for its leaves and that contains nicotine
Carcinogen - A chemical that is known to cause cancer.
Tar - A sticky, thick fluid that is formed when tobacco is burned.
Carbon monoxide - An odorless, tasteless gas.
Emphysema - A condition in which the alveoli lose most of their ability to function.
Secondhand smoke - Tobacco smoke exhaled mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke
Snuff - A tobacco product made from powdered tobacco leaves and stems that is snorted or
placed between the gums and cheek.
9. Leukoplakia - Abnormal cells in the mouth that appear as white patches of tissue.
10. Nicotine patch - A product that is placed on the skin of the arm to release nicotine in the
body.

attended by teens and young adults.
5. LSD - Known as acid or yellow sunshines; a hallucinogen.
6. Stimulants - A group of drugs that speed up the activities of the central nervous system.
7. Cocaine - A white powder extracted from the leaves of a cocoa plant
8. Narcotics - A group of drugs that slow down, or depress, the central nervous system and
relieve pain
9. Codeine - A painkiller produced from morphine.
10. Steroids - A group of synthetic drugs that are related to hormones.

Risk factor - Something that increases the likelihood of a negative outcome.


Protective factor - Something that increases the likelihood of a positive outcome.
Instant gratification - Choosing an immediate reward regardless of potential harmful effects.
Mentor - A responsible person who guides another person.
Physical dependence - A condition in which a person develops tolerance to a drug, the drug
becomes necessary for the person to function, or the person has withdrawal symptoms.
6. Tolerance - A condition in which the body becomes used to a substance.
7. Withdrawal symptoms - Unpleasant reactions that occur when a person who is physically
dependent on a drug no longer takes the drug.
8. Psychological dependence - A very strong desire to continue using a drug for emotional
reasons.
9. Codependent - A person who wants to rescue and control the person with addictive behavior.
10. Enabler - A person who supports the harmful behavior of others.

1. Positive peer pressure - Influence from peers to behave in a responsible way.
2. Negative peer pressure - Influence from peers to behave in a way that is not responsible.
3. Drug-free role model - A person who chooses a drug-free lifestyle knows and follows laws
and policies regarding drugs, and educates others about the risks of using drugs.
4. Drug-free lifestyle - A lifestyle in which a person does not misuse or abuse drugs
5. Peer leader - A student who teaches another student about drugs and how to resist pressure to
use them.
6. Genuine - To be sincere.
7. Positive reinforcement - Rewarding others when they take actions that help them reach a goal.

1. Drug trafficking - The illegal production, distribution, transportation, selling, or purchasing of
drugs
2. Safe and drug-free school zone - A defined area around a school for the purpose of sheltering
young people from the sale of drugs and use of weapons.
3. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) - Pathogen that destroys infection-fighting T cells in
the body.
4. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) - Condition that results in a breakdown of the
bodys ability to fight infection.
5. Prostitution - Sexual activity for pay.

Halfway house - A live-in facility that helps a person who is drug dependent gradually adjust
to living independently in the community.
7. Student assistance program - A school-based program to help prevent and treat alcoholism
and other drug dependencies.
