Zz by Giovanni Gabrieli transcribed for brass quintet by Graeme Page Giovanni Gabrieli (¢.1554-1612) is one of the great masters of the late Italian Renaissance. In his works the culmination of the Venetian style found in the works of earlier composers such as Adrian Willaert, Claudio Merulo, and Andrea Gabrieli, Giovanni's uncle. It is likely that he spent his youth in close study ‘with his uncle Andrea and followed him to Munich to work as a court musician to Duke Albrecht V. Returning to Venice around the year 1580, he soon won a competition to hold the post of organist atSt, Mark’s Cathedral. The elaborate music making at the cathedral under his direction became well-known throughout Italy and Germany, and soon Gabrieli was the most sought-after teacher of composition in Europe, his most successful student being Heinrich Schiitz, ‘Most earnest composition in the Renaissance had been vocal music, and music and texthad been bound together ina close and intimate relationship. ition to vocal music (both sacred and secular) Gabrieli was uniquely expert at writing for instru- ‘mental ensembles, or for instruments accompanying voices. He was attracted to pure musical sonority — abstract musical forms and sounds that did not spring from a music-text relationship. Part of the fame he achieved at St, Mark’s was due to his ability to exploit the vast space and acoustics of the cathedral with large, sonorous combinations of instruments and voices, often used antiphonally. While instrumen- tation in his scores is notalways easily determined, itis evident thathe did very often include brass instruments in his ensembles. The resonant, rich sounds implied in his music make it particularly attractive for brass, and Gabrieli has long been a favorite of brass ensembles and audiences. : CIEL FREITAS MATOS sega TOM 2 4800-914 VILA NOVA SANCE ‘GUIMARAES: Recorded on the CBS release “Canadian Brass LIVE” (MK39515).
