The stripping roller is used for the cleaning of


flat-, cylinder- and doffer clothings. When processing cotton with high honey dew or trash
content the stripping of flat clothings may
become imperative. This in particular if the
cleaning efficiency of the blow room, or the flat
cleaning in case of older types of cards are not
sufficient. For this purpose GRAF has developed
a stripping roller on customers requests.

INITIAL EQUALISING (GRINDING-IN) OF THE FLAT CLOTHINGS


Flexible card clothings are manufactured with distinct side- and back-grinding which result in the
slim and pointed tooth shape. The latter contributes substantially to the carding quality and should
be maintained throughout the life time of the flat clothings. Newly clipped flat clothings are therefore
ground as little as possible, i.e. only equalised. If a ceramic grinding roller is used only the so-called
heel is ground.
New tooth point
A set of flat clothings properly equalised is within a height tolerance of 0,05 mm.
Depending on the raw material processed the tips of the flat clothings are subject to a lesser or
greater degree of wear. Worn, dull tooth points invariably lead to an increase in the nep count and
therefore need to be resharpened.

RESHARPENING OF FLAT CLOTHINGS


The resharpening intervals depend on the quality requirements of each mill, checked either by a nep
testing device or based on our specific recommendations for the preventive maintenance of the clothings.
Based on experience it is recommended to resharpen the flat clothings once the maximum permissible number of neps is reached. In most cases this will result in the desired nep values to be reached
again. If not, the cylinder clothing needs to be resharpened additionally. A microscope with 30-fold
magnification allows the exact determination of the condition of the tooth points.

The flexible flat clothings which are manufactured with utmost precision have a considerably
larger effect on the carding quality than the
cylinder clothing. The number of neps in the card
sliver are primarily determined by the condition
of the flat clothings.
For the periodic resharpening of the flat clothings on the card, GRAF has developed the flat
grinding roller DSW. It allows the economical and
precise resharpening of the flat clothings even
for smaller spinning mills.
Flat clothings can be resharpened with the
DSW at least 3 to 4 times, thus contributing to
a large degree to constant nep values and
the yarn quality.

Initial equalising and resharpening of Metallic Card Clothings with TSA


The best possible carding quality with great consistency and extended life time with todays fine-toothed metallic card clothings can be
achieved if the following principles are adhered to:

1. CHECKING BEFORE MOUNTING


Check both cylinder and doffer for run-out and straightness. Deviations exceeding 0.02 mm must rectified with GRAF GSA or TSA.

2. INITIAL EQUALISING OF THE CLOTHINGS AFTER MOUNTING


The cylinder clothing is equalised for control purposes only. At the most 58% of the tooth points are touched. At 30-fold magnification
these points become visible as bright spots. However, occasional small grinding surfaces with grinding traces are hardly recognisable.
Attention!
Clothings in CUTTY-SHARP alloy need to be equalised according to the detailed instructions attached to the wire coils.
In case of doffer wires 100% of the tooth points must be ground burr-free, to ensure proper transfer of the fibres from the cylinder to the
doffer.
Grinding time
The grinding time is not determined in terms of minutes. Based on the formation of sparks and the experience of the specialist, the machine is stopped at an early stage and the clothing checked with a magnifying glass of at least 30-fold magnification.
Rule: for best performance of the cylinder clothing, contrary to the doffer clothing, the TSA must be retracted while sparks are still visible.
Speeds, Sense of rotation
The clothings are equalised at the operational speed of the rollers or according to the instructions of the machine manufacturer.
For safety reasons the sense of rotation is such that the back of the teeth runs against the grinding stone, i.e. the cylinder runs against its
working direction while the doffer runs in its working direction.

3. RESHARPENING OF THE CLOTHINGS


Dull clothings (rounded carding edge and no grinding traces visible) can be resharpened 3 to 5 times with the necessary care. The grinding process is sufficient as soon as the carding edge is restored and traces from the grinding stone are visible on the entire land of the
teeth.
For the proper evaluation of the condition of the tooth points a microscope with 30-fold magnification is required.

Remarks on the sense of rotation of cylinder for resharpening process


On fully assembled cards the grinding against the teeth has considerable advantages as it prevents the formation of burrs (safety instructions according to the manual of the grinding equipment to be strictly adhered to). Please note, that with this application the formation of
sparks is reduced.

4. GUIDE LINES FOR THE RESHARPENING INTERVALS


The resharpening intervals depend on the internal quality standards, established with a nep testing device or based on our specific recommendation for preventive maintenance.
From experience we recommend to resharpen the clothings once the maximum permissible nep count is reached.
Attention!
The correct resharpening of clothings in CUTTY-SHARP alloy is not possible with the TSA. For this application we recommend the use of
the GRAF TSG (traversing resharpening device).

The activating of todays high-performance
metallic card clothings calls for high demands
on the skill of the maintenance personnel.
It is extremely difficult, even for experts, to
resharpen these very fine clothings burr-free
with conventional grinding equipment. The
resharpening of CUTTY-SHARP clothings with
such equipment is virtually impossible as the
clothings made from this high alloy tool steel
throw hardly any sparks during the resharpening process with a rotating grinding stone,
therefore rendering any visual checking of the
process impossible. Only the application of the
TSG assures proper maintenance of these high
quality metallic clothings.

Todays fine-toothed metallic card clothings will provide best carding quality combined with great consistency through-out their life-time if
the initial equalising and the subsequent resharpening is carried out with great care under observation of the following recommendations:

5. SPEEDS AND SENSE OF ROTATION OF CYLINDER AND DOFFER


Cylinder and doffer wires are resharpened at normal operating speed.

is initially equalised from the back of the teeth (danger of accidents with exposed cylinder)
