These are added on at the end of the tutorial. Though you may want to check that you have the
AVC(264) Codec first as the reason why if you still get the Cannot Open AVI File may be down to
missing that particular codec from your system.
> Error solution upon converting problem
> Included a link to the AVC(264) codec (Still Cannot open AVI file solution [?])

Dont you all just love it when you want to make a motion data of something so you spend time downloading the said
video from youtube or some other site and then this happens when you go to load it?

MMD wont load the .avi file because it isnt the right type. You need to convert your AVI file to Microsoft Video 1 and in
order to do this you need to go and download a media convertor.
Now you can use a program called Prism Video file Converter. However, Im not going to download something that has a
trial for 14 days; perhaps 30 days, but not 14 days (actually Id prefer no trial). So Im going to go and download Format
Factory, which is completely free.
The link to the homepage can be found over to your right in the green box. This
link can also be found in the description in case you cant click it for some
reason. Or you could use that new invention called Google search engine. It
helps you find things by typing it into the search bar.
The good thing about this program is that its also multi-language (60 in total
languages included) and its also a multifunctional convertor. Below are some
of the things it can convert. You can also find more info on their page.

Format Factory homepage

All to MP4/3GP/MPG/AVI/WMV/FLV/SWF.
All to MP3/WMA/AMR/OGG/AAC/WAV.
All to JPG/BMP/PNG/TIF/ICO/GIF/TGA.
Rip DVD to video file , Rip Music CD to audio file. *cough you never saw this. Its a lie*
MP4 files support iPod/iPhone/PSP/BlackBerry format.
So. Moving on from all your illegal wrong-doings. Go and download Format Factory. It should do it quite quickly.
Now Im not going to go through the whole process of installation with you, but the program will come in a zip file, simply
open the zip file or copy and paste the .exe file and click it to begin the installation process. I think you need a 100-and
something MBs of free space, so to be on the safe side, Id say at least make sure you have 120MBs free.
Once it installs open the pretty program. This is what your program should look like. Ooh Intimidating.

Just kidding. Its not that bad. Now, I clicked All to AVI.

Now I actually really hate the interface. But in order to add a file to the convert list, you have to go to Add File.

And select the file that you want to convert. It should now appear like this once you select open. Next go to Output
Setting.

This window should now pop up. The section you need is Video Stream.

Now I do not believe that Microsoft Video 1 is actually on the list. However there is another format which MMD seems
to like, unless it is MV 1 in disguise and I dont know it. So we are going to use AVC (H264).

Now that weve selected AVC(H264). Click okay. You can play with the other Format Factory settings some other time on
your own.

Youll now get taken back to this screen. Youll probably want to change the Output folder place to somewhere else that
you desire. Now because this is showing you how to make a video compatible with MMD, Ive actually already converted it
once, so the output folder location on your version will be different. I think it tries to go to your documents.

Ive already converted this file once, so Im going to save it in a different folder. Click Browse and choose your location. Im
saving it within My Videos folder.

Anyway, after all of that, click OK next to Output Setting.

Its actually really quite funny when you dont have somebody to tell you where the Start button is for this program. You
look around for ages, but its actually right in front of you as Click to Start in orange.

Now click Click to Start and your conversion will begin. It may take a while depending on the file size. Dont worry. Itll
tell you once its done.

Mine took 1 minute and 28 seconds to convert.

Now Im going to go and test the quality of it. So Im going to open my Windows Media player and play the converted file.

Original

Converted

Okay, it looks quite good. The sound quality isnt that bad either. Its also gone from being a 90MB file to a mere 38.5MB
file.

Now open your MMD. Go to Background (B)> Load Background AVI file (L) and go find your converted file. Click on it to
open it or whatever floats your boat and it should now open in MMD.

However, I guess you want it to be on a screen than in the background. So go and Load your stage in accessory
manipulation section. Im using this one.

Now go to Background(b) again and this time go down to the Screen Capture Mode section

Youll probably want to select ON.Mode03(B) but here is an example of what each do.
ON.Mode01(M)
Model

ON.Mode02(N)
(Stretches screen more than the
Model one)

ON.Mode03 (B)
Background

Also, if you dont want the video to be in the background, then just go to background (again) and click Show background
AVI file (A), which will get rid of the video in the background, but it will still show on the screens.

I hope that this tutorial has helped you! This is all there is to playing an avi file in the background.
Oh actually I forgot to mention that theres no sound on the videos when played through MMD (at least for AVC(H264)) .
So make sure you make the video a wav file as well. I believe you can also do this in FF under Audio.
Good luck!

Extra Section
1. Error Message upon converting
For those getting an error upon attempting to convert a file it says on the main site FAQ section the following;
Question : I installed Format factory in my PC having Windows XP OS. But is is showing an error.
AnswerPlease install VC10 Redistributable Package (x86) to fix it.
VC10 - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328
VC8 - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5582
Although it isnt very clear what this error is this may be the cause of the error message appearing.

2. Cannot Open AVI file error still occurs

I noticed that on my Video Compressor section where you go to render a video that I
have the following codec installed on my computer.
X264vfw H264/MPEG-4 AVC Codec
In other words AVC(H264). If you do not have this codec installed this may be the
reason why the error message still occurs because it works perfectly fine on my one.
You can download it here from this site:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/ . I believe that it is the first link
where it says Looking for the newest version, but I dont really remember what I
clicked to download it.

.I was kinda getting desperate for codecs that would allow me to render videos
with MMD.
Also, if you ever want to view what codecs you have installed on your system open your Windows Media Player and
go to Help and click on About Windows Media Player and click Technical Support on the box that comes up.

It will load in your browser so dont be alarmed that it does. Look for the section that says Video Codecs and itll list all the
codecs you have installed on your computer.

If problems still persist then do not hesitate to let me know. However, at least try and give me information about
what you did/what happened and what codecs you have installed on your computer. Remember that I am not sitting
next to you nor do I know where things are on your computer. So itd be helpful if you gave me that information.
