directly

Social skills
assumed or
ignored

Active interaction
with others

No interaction
between pupils

Accountable to
others

Not accountable to
others

Responsible to the
group

Responsible only to
self

Heterogeneous
grouping

Homogeneous
grouping, if any

Positive
interdependency

One student serves

as leader

Heterogenous groups where

students of different ability levels
could all contribute toward solution
of completion of task. Each student
could bring forward a different
strength to complete task.
Homogeneous grouping
students are at same level an could
be used to target certain areas that
need review, provide enrichment,
differentiate instruction.

Pros of cooperative learning:

-benefits all different types of learners
-increased self-esteem as their views
are excepted by their peers
-students learn discipline like waiting
their turn to talk and talking one at a
time
-interpersonal skills are developed
since students are to interact with each
other
-increased participation in class as
compared to volunteering where
always the same student raises their
hand and participates
-developing workplace skills
-increased motivation and
engagement in classroom work
-increased achievement

They cant work together they talk
too much, they dont talk enough,
they wont get the work done, they
dont get along the excuses go on
and on as to why we cant form
cooperative groupings.!

Does this sound familiar?

Cons of cooperative learning:

-students get off task very easy

-noise level in the classroom
-developing dependency on a group
-one group can get finished a lot
quicker than another
-some students do not participate
enough in the group
-it can be difficult to get students to
get along

Cooperative Learning consist of

student centered teaching instead of
teacher directed learning. Students can
be placed in heterogeneous or
homogeneous groups. There must be
individual

accountability and a clear purpose.
Each student having accountability
allow students to see that if they do not
participate in the group the entire
group will not succeed.

Traditional teaching is composed of a

teacher-centered curriculum. The teacher
usually gets up in front of the class
delivers the information, and then the
students do work individually. Traditional
teaching is a necessity but does not need
to be overused in any classroom. In
cooperative learning, the students are
assigned groups and do investigation on
a particular subject. Students are
basically teaching themselves and the
teacher is just monitoring the students
and guiding only when necessary.

Cooperative grouping is an effective

strategy to use with First Nations
students because it reflects the sense of
cooperation and community that is a
vital aspect of First Nations culture.
Success is based on the performance of
the group rather than the performance
of individual students

Cooperative learning groups must also

have individual accountability in order to
be considered a cooperative|learning
group. Students must have an individual
task or assignment in the group in order
to engage them in group learning. Simply
putting students in groups will not
produce any gains in achievement.

30% of what we see

Errand Monitor:

or request help from the teacher when
the group decides they dont have the
resources to solve the problem!

many different strategies. Teachers

need to find the method that works
best for the students in their
classroom.
