Rajan:

Intheearlysixties,1962tobeexact.

Interviewer:

AndwhydidyoucometotheUK?

Rajan:
Well,itwasquitecommoninthosedays.ExperienceofworkingintheBritishNationalHealth
ServicewashighlyvaluedinIndia.Ihadjustfinishedmymedicaldegree,andIthoughtthiswouldbeagood
waytogetexperience.Ionlyintendedtostayforfiveyears,whileIcompletedmypostgraduatestudies.

Sowhydidyoustaylonger?

Rajan:
Tworeasons,really.ThefirstisthatIthoroughlyenjoyedworkingfortheNHS.Theclinical
trainingIreceivedwasfantastic,andIworkedalongsidesomeexcellentconsultants,andlearntalot.Andthe
secondreasonisthatImetmywife,whowasworkingasapaediatricnurse.
Interviewer:

AndsoyoucontinuedworkingintheNHSuntilyouretired.

Rajan:

Thatscorrect.Firstasapaediatrician,andthenlaterIretrainedasaGP.

Interviewer: YoumusthaveseenalotofchangesintheNationalHealthService.Whatwasitlikewhen
youfirstcamehere?
Rajan:
Itwasexcellent.Ithinkthattherewasalotmorerespectforthemedicalprofessionthanthere
isnow,andpatientshadalotoffaithintheirdoctors.Therewerentsomanyproblemswithlongwaitinglists,
andnewadvancesinareassuchasorgantransplantsmadeitanexcitingprofessiontobein.
Interviewer:

Yes,itmusthavebeen.DidyouhaveanyproblemswhenyoufirststartedworkinginBritain?

Rajan:
Well,yes.MyfirstplacementwasinahospitalinthenortheastofEngland.AndIhadreal
problemsunderstandingwhatpeopleweresayingtome.Whichcameasquiteashock,asIthoughtIhad
rathergoodEnglish.EventuallyIconfessedtoacolleaguethatIsometimescouldntunderstandwhatmy
patientsweresaying.Andsheadmittedthatshehadthesameproblem,asshecamefromadifferentpartof
thecountry.
Interviewer: Yes,someregionalaccentscanbequitedifficulttounderstand.Onelastquestiondoyou
