4. Define x(n) = cos( n/8) [u(n) u(n 50)]. Compute the output of the system in two
ways:
a) y(n) = h(n) * x(n) using the conv command.
b) Use your function to find the output for this input signal.
Are the computed two output signals same?
5.Write a new Matlab function for the system with the difference equation:
y(n) = x(n) + 2 x(n 1) 1.1 y(n 1)
Find and plots the impulse response of this system.
6. a) Find the Fourier series coefficients c(k) for the periodic signal
x(t) = | cos( t)|.
b) Find the Fourier series coefficients c(k) for the periodic triangular pulse shown
below.

7. Find the Fourier transform for the following signals, observe amplitude and phase
response.
a) Sin (t) , Sin (2t)
b) Sinc function
c) Rectangular pulse
8. Illustration of Gibbs phenomenon using Matlab.
9. Perform the Sampling and Quantization for any given signal.
10. Perform Integration and Differentiation in Matlab.

Project Activity:
Choose one project topic after the approval of concerned faculty. Project activity shall continue
over the complete semester.
Deadline to decide project topic is before mid-semester break

Course Objective:
1. To introduce the concepts and techniques associated with understanding of signals and
systems.
2. To familiarize with techniques suitable for analyzing continuous-time and discrete-time.
3. To provide with an appreciation of applications for the techniques and mathematics used in
this course.
4. To understand complex signals and their representation in terms of common signals.
5. To understand the signal frequency content and the system representation in the
frequency domain.
6. To understand the concept of signal convolution and its use in analysis of linear dynamic
systems.
7. To master the use of the Laplace transform in analysis of continuous-time linear dynamic
systems.
8. To master the use of the Z-transform in analysis of discrete-time linear dynamic systems.

Course Outcome:
1. An ability to analyze complex signals in time domain.
2. An ability to study signals and systems in the frequency domain.
3. To find the response of both continuous/discrete time linear dynamic systems.
4. An ability to prepare lab. and project report.
