SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

A superlative adjective is used to compare three or more objects, people, or


places. Using the superlative form takes a comparison to the highest degree
possible.
RULES
The rules for creating superlative adjectives are similar to those used when
making comparative adjectives.
For a one-syllable word simply add the suffix est to the word. Often times it is
necessary to double the final consonant.

Long-longest

Big Biggest

If the one syllable word ends with an e you only need to add an -st.

Fine-finest

If a two-syllable word ends with a y then change the y to I and add -est.

are

preceded

by

words most or least.

Would be most handsome or least perfect.

Sentence examples containing superlative adjectives:

Michael is the oldest boy at the party.

That is the flimsiest excuse Ive ever heard.

Katie wore the prettiest dress she owned.

Snow white was the fairest maiden of them all.

These are the thinnest pancakes Ive ever made.

Some say Elizabeth Taylor was the most famous film star of all time.

There are two types of superlative: relative and absolute.

Relative: John

is

the

smartest

boy

in

the

class.

Absolute: John is very smart.


The relative superlative describes a noun within the context of some larger
group.

John is the smartest boy in the class.

Mary is the youngest person in the room.

Of the three, Moe is the meanest.

The absolute superlative does not describe the noun in the context of a larger
group.

John is very smart.

The book is extremely expensive.

The food is indescribably tasty.

In English, the relative superlative is formed by using the word "most" or the
ending "-est."

John is the most intelligent boy in the class.

Mary is the smartest girl in the class.

In Spanish, the relative superlative construction is similar to the comparative.

John is the smartest boy in the class.

Bill Gates is the richest man in the U.S.

Just like in English, the noun can be omitted. All of the following are correct.

Mary is the thinnest girl in the class.

Mary is the thinnest in the class.

Use the superlative form of the adjectives in brackets.
