An Excerpt from the Nectar Drops

You are to know Brahma (God) in two steps - Kri and Ya. You are to remain in
the top and observe how the work is going on from morning till you go to bed.
Keep your tongue under control. In Kriya-Yoga you are taught to control your
tongue through Khechari Mudra.
Think hundred times before you speak.
For the monk it is best that he should keep on moving and teaching, because
their lives should be given to all.

Emergent Evolution
In his Emergent Evolution, Morgan says that evolution is the name we give to the
comprehensive sequence in all natural events. Bergson, the French thinker, suggests that
the evolution of the world can be satisfactorily explained by admitting a common living
force that is striving constantly for balance and harmony. This force he calls the vital
impetus, the elan vital. It is identical with the basic reality or force underlying all
manifestations.
It is observed that the vital impetus struggles to manifest itself in the living world in different
kinds of material environments. As a result, evolution of life takes place along three chief
paths -plants, lower animals, and human beings. Consciousness is still in a state of sleep or
torpor in plants, whereas in animals it is partially liberated from the overpowering
influence of the material body and environment, as is indicated by the power of sensation
and movement. In human beings consciousness supersedes matter, especially in
intelligent action preceded by deliberate choice and free movement. The three main
tendencies that help distinguish the three chief paths along which life evolved are the
vegetative torpor, animal instinct, and human intelligence.
To produce a new individual, two living germ cell- sperm from the father and the ovum
or egg from the mother- unite when conception takes place. Both the egg and the sperm
contain tiny threadlike structures called chromosomes, the threads of life. Life is not a
byproduct of matter, because the quality that is life vitalizes and pervades matter, determining
the degree of complexity required for emergence of biological activity. Mind emerges in
a living organism of a higher degree of complexity. Though life is manifesting in any

material body, the constitution of the living body shows new types of relationships and
characteristics when sufficiently evolved to possess the power of thought.
Matter viewed externally and superficially appears to be unconscious, just as human bodies
and plants may appear to be unconscious based only on our external observation. However,
plants and even metals exhibit symptoms of sensitivity when measured on fine scientific
instruments. According to Shri Aurobindo, matter is the Self-expression of the Absolute
that has playfully plunged itself into apparent sleep in order to enjoy the delight of Selfdiscovery by ascending back to Itself through the successive stages of evolution. Matter is
essentially creative; matter is activity. The creative activity observed in inorganic matter is
more evident in the behavior of living matter.
With the emergence of consciousness in the organism, a new quality is generated that cannot
be completely reduced either to matter or to life. Self-consciousness indicates a higher
degree consciousness and it is a new level of emergence. The human being is a
microcosm of the universe. The first three manifes tations of reality- matter,
life, and mind- are embodied in human beings. In addition, the human being has an
inner and abiding psychic entity called the soul around which the body, life and mind are
organized into an individual entity that stores up the individual's experiences and that
persists through the changes of body, life, and mind.
According to the Upanishads, matter (anna), life (prana) and perceptual consciousness
(manas) are the truer expressions of the spirit. The spirit in human beings is the reality
underlying all existence. The Self, God, and the Absolute are all names of the one universal
spirit in its different aspects. The Self is the manifestation of the spirit in the human form
through the body and mind. The human self, like matter, life, and other expressions of spirit is
an organized whole. It is the latest and highest product of the creative process of emergent
evolution.
Conscious realization of humanity's unity with the spirit is the goal of life and, consciously
or unconsciously, every person tries to advance towards that end. The spirit of a person is always
shining in him. When he realizes his unity with the universal Self his own spiritual
existence a person becomes one with the universe. Meditation is the way to Selfdiscovery. To know truth we have to go deeper. There is only one method to acquire
knowledge. From the ordinary person to the highest yogi -- all must use the same
method and that method is concentration. This is the knock that opens the gates of nature
and lets out floods of light. Concentration is the only key to the treasure of knowledge.
The power of the human mind is unlimited. The secret of the world is ours, if we know
how to knock, how to give the necessary blow. The strength and force of the blow come
through concentration.
There are three sorts of instruments of knowledge. The first is instinct, which is most
highly developed in animals. This is the lowest instrument of knowledge. In human
beings, it is developed into reason. Yet reason is still insufficient. To acquire perfection, further
evolution is essential. Through the practical of Kriya Yoga during one year, one gets the
results of many years of evolution. The great scientific method is to magnetize and send the
current around the brain and spinal column and, thereby, secure one year's evolution in
every inhalation and exhalation, which is equal to one Kriya. When by the purifying effect
of Kriya, the brain cells are purified, divine magnetism touches them. Every cell becomes
vibrant with divine energy, attaining the state of cosmic consciousness. All the knowledge
of the world is grasped very easily.

The Process to Quicken Evolution

The spinal cord and brain are wonderful structures. They are comprised of highly
specialized nerve-cells and nerve-fibers, surrounded by cerebro-spinal fluid and a thick
and intertwined network of blood vessels. The length of the vertebral column is 70 cms.
and the spinal cord is 45 cms. The spinal cord (sushumna) starting at the base of
the skull, ends in the lumbar region behind the umbilicus in a cone. From there, a
delicate threadlike bluish-white structure -- the filum terminale -extends down to
and is anchored at the coccyx. The vertebral column starts at the base of the skull and
ends at the top of the coccyx. A central canal traverses the whole length of the spinal cord
and up to half or three-fourths of the filum terminale. A thick bundle of nerves descends
down the terminal cone of the spinal cord, surrounding the filum and occupying the
sacral region. This bundle is the cauda equina.
A yogic exercise in Kriya Yoga, known as mahamudra, is a simple but effective method to
straighten the spine and encourage distribution of prana (life currents) along the spine.
Correct practice of mahamudra equalizes the flow of life energy to all parts of the body.
Because of the effectiveness of mahamudra in magnetizing and adjusting the spine, this
technique may be practiced whenever the body requires adjustment. By magnetizing the
spine, life force can be transmuted into radiant, all-accomplishing spiritual force that,
in turn, can hasten physical and mental regeneration and rejuvenation.
The great yogis, the master-minds of India, have taught a method of revolving certain
currents around the spine and brain. The spine is the only ladder by which one can ascend
to cosmic consciousness. Physical and mental rejuvenation through Kriya Yoga effects the
awakening of latent super-sensory powers and perceptions. In meditation our
consciousness and energy have to be consciously withdrawn from the senses and
muscles to the spine. The practice of Kriya magnetizes the spine by circulating life
current lengthwise around it, thereby withdrawing life current from the senses and
involuntary organs and concentrating it in the spine.
During the practice of Kriya, the entire spine is converted into a magnet, which draws
bodily currents away from the senses and nerves. The pituitary, the center of the will,
becomes the positive pole and the coccygeal plexus becomes the negative pole. The
current created by continuous inhalation and exhalation becomes a magnet of energy that
draws into the spine more energy from the nervous system and from the cosmic
source. The Kriya technique transfers our attention from sensations of sight, smell, sound,
taste, and touch to the subtler perceptions in the spine and brain. A devotee then becomes
automatically introverted and experiences the divine sensation of sound, vibration,
touch of heaviness above the forehead, vision of glow of light in the mid-brain, and
becomes absorbed in meditation. Therefore, the Kriya technique is the foundation of Selfrealization. It makes the brain clear and calm, because the entire consciousness is
centralized in the spine. There is nothing to be compared with the soothing sensation of
joy felt in the spine. By revolving the life force once around the spine, as the Kriya yogi is
wont to do, one can effect a change in the brain and body that is ordinarily possible in one
year of diseaseless existence, careful eating, and absorption of solar energy. The passing
of this current around the spine once corresponds to the effect of sunlight during 365 days.
Cosmic consciousness is spread all over the universe and pervades everything. Human
consciousness is limited to the human body and its environment. To attain cosmic

consciousness, it is necessary to expand the consciousness that resides in every living cell of
the body and brain. Kriya practice clears and stimulates the brain and strengthens the
medulla. It also greatly magnetizes the body, saturating and feeding all its physical cells with
undecaying light and keeping them in a magnetized state.
Spirit is self-born. Spirit is ever-conscious. God's attention is equally distributed
everywhere and is fully concentrated everywhere. We human beings, made in God's own
image, have latent within us the power to concentrate our attention and to feel our
existence everywhere. By properly following the laws of living and by faithful practice of
Kriya Yoga, we can expand our consciousness and reach the ocean of cosmic
consciousness or divine Spirit.

Nanga Baba - The Great Saint of Puri
In the scriptures there is a saying :
sadhundm darsanam punyam ttrthabhuta hi sadhavah
tirtham phalati kalena sadya sddhu samagamah
To see or to get the company of the holy is a great blessing, which enhances one's virtue
as they are considered moving tirtha (the place of pilgrimage). Time and energy are needed to
benefit from pilgrimage but the company of the holy gives instant results, immediate peace,
bliss and joy.
A man who loves wine goes to wine shop. One who loves food goes to a restaurant. Those who
love Truth seek good company, for a Man is known by the company he keeps.
Puri is not only a place of pilgrimage; it is a place sane by the presence of many saints, sages and
holy men who live there. God is infinite and so are the paths to reach him. But it is only the
enlightened souls who can show us these paths.
Although Rabinarayan stayed at the Ashram most of the time in silence and seclusion, he never
missed the opportunity to be in the company of other monks and holy men, which accelerated
his spiritual progress.
At the extreme southwest corner of the town of Puri, near the temple of Lord Lokanath, there
lived a famous monk on a sand hill called Girnari Banta. He was a tall naked monk, popularly
known as Nanga Baba, also as Digambar Paramahamsa. His life and activities were
mysterious. Many people believed that he was the same as Totapuri, the divine guru of Sri
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa of Dakshineshwar, who enabled him to attain the samadhi state. He
was in his body for about 250 years and the last 50 years of his life was spent in Puri. During his
stay in Puri, there was no visible change in his physical body. Most of the time he was absorbed in
the state of non-dual Brahman; sometimes with eyes open and sometimes closed. He rarely
opened his mouth. Sometimes his behavior and talk seemed rude, but he was teaching great
lessons of life.
Someone once asked him "What is your age?" He replied, Self-realized soul is beyond birth
and death. I was not born, so how can I tell my age?" Occasionally he would disappear for
days or weeks. Nobody knew his whereabouts and after some time he would come back
which made his devotees happy. He was a detached person, who never liked to live in crowded
areas. He always preferred to live in seclusion. Even the ashram in Puri, where he lived, was

far away from the main town. But many people still visited him daily. He could read people's
mind and motives. After paying regards through prostration and bowing down, if someone just
stayed around, he would say, Okay, you have seen me. Go into town and see the temples and the
monkeys!" But if he found a sincere seeker, then he would speak of spiritual truths.
Brahmachari Rabinarayan visited this ashram occasionally to sit silently and to meditate in
his divine presence. Just as a goldsmith knows the quality of gold, this monk with burning
renunciation and detachment knew Brahmachari Rabinarayan's thirst for God and was
always delighted to see him. Sometimes he said in Hindi, "Beta (my child), If you have some
questions, please ask."
One day Brahmachari Rabinarayan asked, "Baba ! I have a question in my mind about the
creation of the universe. The taittiriya upanisad says, 'In the beginning there was nothing
but brahman the Absolute. Through inner contemplation Brahman thought of creation and
became many. So through meditation, from the self came the space, then air, fire, water and
earth. My doubt is, when water was created before the earth, what was the support for the
water ?" The naked monk laughed loudly, his big body vibrating with joy Then he said,
"beta, abhitak srsti nehin hua hai (my child, until now the creation has not taken place).
Hearing this the young Brahmachari was surprised. He looked at him and listened to his
every word very attentively. The monk continued, "You have seen brinjal (eggplant) hanging
on the plant. Each seed inside is dreaming of being a plant and bearing new flowers and fruits.
Similarly we all are the seeds in the divine womb of brahman. As the seed dreams of a new
plant, each one is dreaming of creation. There is no creation, it is a dream." Then he said,"
Fire was created before water, and it took thousands of years for water to come down
through repeated evaporation and this process resulted in sedimentation. That was how the
earth was formed."
One day Brahmachari Rabinarayan was sitting near him in introvert stage. One rich
businessman came to him and bowed down and asked, "Babaji! Please give some advice to
me." The divine monk did not pay any heed to his request. When the man repeatedly said,
"Have grace on me. Please tell me what should I do ? The monk looked at him and
said, "Look, from today, don't tell lies anymore. This is my advice" and then remained
silent. The visitor said, "Baba! I am a businessman. How can I survive and continue my
business without telling lies?" Then the monk said with apparent disgust "That is why I do not
give any advice. Go, throw my advice in to garbage and continue your business in
falsehood."
Another visitor who was sincerely trying for spiritual evolution asked, "Baba ! How can
one be free from ego ?" He replied, "There are two ways. First, consider this universe to
be a dream and unreal. Follow the path of renunciation and non-attachment. Be a karma
sannyasi (renunciate in action). Second, consider the universe to be the manifestation of the
Divine and work without expectation."
On another occasion he said, "A family man should do three things to progress in the path of
liberation: 1. Study soul-elevating spiritual scriptures. 2. Keep good company. 3. Follow the
instructions of the divine masters (sadgurus) in spiritual practice.
This naked monk was always absorbed in divine consciousness. One day some
devotees came with musical instruments and started singing devotional songs loudly.
He remarked, "Why do you all howl like jackals? Be introvert and practice meditation."

Once a rich devotee approached him to seek his blessings before he went on a
pilgrimage to holy places. The monk remarked "Yes, yes. Go and visit the holy places. The
same stones, which are here, are there also (stone statues and temples). You have enough
money to roam here and there and after coming back, you can tell your friends many stories
- about what you did and what you saw. Renounce all these egotistic attitudes. Stay for
some time in seclusion and try to meditate and attain self-knowledge."
On another occasion he advised a sincere aspirant, "Only by doing meditation for some time
you cannot get real progress. Along with it, you need to develop the attitude of renunciation
and non attachment. One who has no control over food and sense enjoyment cannot get the
light of inner self ?"
A rich householder invited the naked monk to his house for his holy company. He replied, "I
do not appreciate monks living in the family of householders. One may have the desire
for good company, but in reality, it adds to the ego of such rich men that they could host a
great monk. Please do not misunderstand, but this is the bitter truth. Nowadays some rich
family men have the attitude of keeping the monks with them as a kept woman! Man
wants peace, but leaving the true path he goes astray. How can he get the taste of real peace
and bliss in this external world where everything is perishable; to get peace from these
transitory objects is impossible. Material objects in reality breed sorrow."
This mysterious monk with miraculous powers was never seen going to any temple. He
was searching God in the inner chambers of his own self. After living for several
centuries in the physical body, he entered into the state of mahdsamadhi on August 24, 1962.
His body was buried inside the ashram premises, where a beautiful temple was constructed.
The name of the ashram is Advaita Brahma Ashram, Girnari Banta. Until today, the ashram is
charged with spiritual vibrations. It looks like a small sand hill, decorated with many
plants and trees and has a few cottages. Many pilgrims and visitors come to spend a few
moments in seclusion and silence.

The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 17, Verse 18-19)

Verse 18
satkaramanapujartham
tapo dambhena caiva yat
kriyate tad iha proktam
rajasam calam adhruvam

Translation

Penance that is practiced with hypocrisy, for the sake of honor, respect, and reverence and
for show, is declared to be rajasic (passionate, extroverted). It yields uncertain and
momentary fruit.

Metaphorical Interpretation
Rajasic people are extremely restless, materialistic, showy, extroverted, and
hypocritical. In this verse, the Lord describes the rajasic tapasyaworship performed by
rajasic people.
Although they know that they are dishonest, insincere, and corrupt in everyday life, they
pretend to be honest and good. They hide all their negative qualities inside, and falsely
advertise themselves to be highly advanced in spiritual life on the outside by their
appearance, speech, and activities. It is a show of spirituality.
Rajasic people also perform many rituals and worships with the expectation of gaining
honor, respect, and reverence from people. They expect position and status in their
community. Truly spiritual people are extremely humble, always thinking, "I am
insignificant, I am not worthy of anything, except to love God and meditate." But
rajasic people are the exact opposite.
Rajasic people spend huge amounts of moneynot to serve God, but to earn respect
and gratitude from others. Everything is done with an expectation of the fruit of their
actions and worship. For prosperity, they pray to Lakshmi; for respect and strength to
Kartikeya; for success, to Ganesha; for freedom from trouble, to Durga.
Rajasic people are extremely busy with all kinds of religious activities, pomp, and
grandeur, but they remain far from truth. They cannot achieve God-realization through
all this show and pretense. Truly speaking, the mind of rajasic people is not seeking
truth or God.

Verse 19
mudhagrahena 'tmano yat
pidaya kriyate tapah
parasyo 'tsadanartham va
tat tamasam udahrtam

Translation
Austerity that is performed with deluded notions and self-mortification or to cause harm to
others, is declared to be tamasic.

Metaphorical Interpretation

There are many idle, lazy, lethargic, procrastinating, and slothful people who do not work
productively and properly. They maintain their livelihood by unfair means like theft,
embezzling money, begging, and sometimes torturing people. They do not even hesitate to
kill people. They are deluded. Their minds are full of chaos and confusion. They cannot
decide what is good for them.
Tamasic people pray to and worship gods in an effort to hide their evil actions, so that even
the police cannot trace their crimes. They do this out of ignorance. They worship not
only to fulfill Weir evil motives, but also to bring harm to others through their so-called
religious activities. They undertake long fasts and even Perform very bad activities, such
as animal sacrifice. They torture themselves and bring harm to others. Such religious
activities, penance, and austerities are tamasic.
Tamasic people are filled with extreme pride, ego, anger, and cruelty. Their formal
worship only serves to fool themselves as well as cheat others. Their minds are not
seeking God at all; they are after the satisfaction of their inner, lower, evil aspirations.
This is the lowest form of worship.
