Known problems
General

The following are general known problems on the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32.

Known Problem #17136

The CIT port and LAN1 port should not be connected to the same network hub or
same LAN switch.
Workaround:
Connect the CIT port and LAN1 port to separate hubs and make sure they are
connected to ports on the LAN switch that are on separate VLANs.

Known Problem #17418

If any NEs have previously been configured as GNEs using static IP routing and then
re-configured as non-GNEs, re-routing will not take place until the ARP entries age
out.
Workaround:
It is recommended that routers on the local subnet have their ARP entries cleared so
that re-routing may take place immediately rather than waiting for arp entries to age
out.

Known Problem #21673

During the firmware upgrade, after software installation, the CARD UNKNOWN
condition may be raised.
Workaround:
The condition will clear when the upgrade is complete.

Known Problem #22337

While creating services with any user interface, the cross connection operation state is
always down when the CH is add/drop at the SFD channel port.
Workaround:
When the services are provisioned, set the admin state to up for the SFD CH port.

Known Problem #27442

Transient alarms may be observed during a software upgrade or due to a protected
equipment controller switch.
Workaround:
No action is required. The transient alarms can be ignored and will clear on their own.

Known Problem #32734

SFTP using FreeSSHd on Windows PC's is not supported.
Workaround:
Use another SSH program such as cygwin sshd or OpenSSH.

Known Problem #32626

It is possible to get a power spike on the line if an SVAC circuit pack is cold rebooted
Workaround:
Before cold rebooting an SVAC circuit pack or a single shelf containing an SVAC,
remove the fiber patch to the C1 input of the SVAC. Re-insert the fiber after the pack
completes booting.

WebUI

The following are known problems related to the WebUI interface on the Alcatel-Lucent
1830 PSS-32.

Known Problem #18168

The login screen does not appear when connecting to the NE when some versions of
Java are installed.
Workaround:
If this occurs, verify the version of Java installed on the PC by going to the following
url.
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1
If the page shows Java Version 6 Update 10 or later, perform the following steps.
1. Go to the Windows Control Panel (accessed via the Start button) and select Java.
2. The Java Control Panel window will appear. Select the Advanced tab and expand
the Java Plug-in item.
3. Uncheck the option to enable next-generation Java plug-in and click OK.
4. The browser window must be restarted for this change to become effective.

impact on transmission.

TL1

The following are known problems related to the TL1 interface on the Alcatel-Lucent
1830 PSS-32.

Known Problem #21426

If the SET-ATTR-OCH command is executed with the AID set to Pack-slot-portfreq, setting the severity of an OCH CONDTYPE provisions all channels not just the
channel specified.

A Switch Request is sometimes reported as a Reverse Request when it should be
No Request. All switching happens correctly. This will occur if on the near end
(NE) of a protected circuit if a force switch request is made to the protection path
followed by a signal failure (SF) on the far end (FE) of the protection path. When the
SF on the FE is cleared, the Switch Request on the NE will be Reverse Request
instead of No Request.
Workaround:
The Switch request will be reported correctly when another switch occurs.

Known Problem #22334

Occasionally a DATAERR condition may be reported on an OPSA circuit pack.
Workaround:
Perform a warm reboot of the circuit pack.

Known Problem #22335

The first time an OPS cross-connect is created, an INVALIDTHRESH condition will
be reported but will clear a few seconds later. Also, when an OPS cross-connect is
created, LOS will be reported and will clear a few seconds later.
Workaround:
The alarms are transient and will clear a few seconds after being raised.

Known Problem #27131

When TCA notifications are enabled, a Y-cable protection switch will cause OPT TCA
events to be generated on the affected circuit packs.
Workaround:
A soft reboot of the packs with the TCA events will clear the TCA's that were
generated as a result of the protection switch. Alternately, using the WebUI you can
suppress OPT TCA's for Y-cable protected client ports in the Performance function by
setting NO PROFILE for these ports for 15-min and 1-day bins.

deleted, reapply a valid OTU1 signal, add the OTU1 service, and then delete the OTU1
service.

11STAR1

The following known problems are related to the 11STAR1 circuit packs on the AlcatelLucent 1830 PSS-32.

Known Problem #18574

The APS/PCC OH field on the 11STAR1 circuit pack will not be generated properly
after changing the client signal rate from OTU2 to any other rate.
Workaround:
Cold reset the 11STAR1 circuit pack after changing the client signal rate from OTU2
to any other rate.

Known Problem #17474

When TIMRESP (Trail Trace Identifier Mismatch Response) or PLMRESP (Payload

(aSSF) and generate associated consequent action (such as aBDI or aAIS generation).
Workaround:
Match TTI fields on the connected OTN entities or disable TIM comparison using the
TRCCMP attribute to avoid consequent action based on dTIM. Match service types on
the end points and leave the default PT field code points to avoid consequent action
based on dPLM.

Connect to the NE for CLI access

Description

After completing the database initialization using webUI, you can connect directly to the
network element to access the CLI. No client software is needed on your PC, only a telnet
application.
Note:

Most procedures in this chapter can be completed using either the webUI or
CLI. A procedure for each available interface is provided in each section of the
chapter. Some procedures can only be completed using CLI.
Procedure

You can connect a computer (typically a laptop) directly to a network element to access
the CLI using the CIT port on the faceplate of the active Equipment Controller (EC) card.
On multi-shelf network elements, the CIT port is active on the master shelf only. Note this
is the same connection used for the webUI interface.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

If not already connected, connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the CIT port on the
active EC card (indicated by a green Active LED) on the master shelf. Connect the other
end of the cable to the Ethernet port on your PC.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Use a telnet application on your PC and open a telnet session connected to the IP address
of the CIT port.

The default CIT IP address is 172.16.0.1

Configure the software environment and load, and commit the

software
Purpose

The NE is shipped with software pre-loaded. However, the software version that is preloaded on the cards may not be the same as the software version that will be run in the
network. You must therefore perform the following tasks to load and commit the correct
software load on the NE.
The PC connected to the NE must have an FTP server running. The first procedure is to
prepare the FTP server on the NE. Then follow either the WebUI or CLI procedure for the
software download and activation.
Note:

If this is a multi-shelf system, the software will automatically load onto the
subtending shelves as well as the master shelf.
FTP server preparation
Note: Refer to Example configuration of ftp server (p. 4-25) for more detailed
instructions on configuring an FTP server.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Start the FTP server application on your PC and create a user account. Record the userid
and password established for the account.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Establish a root directory for the server and make sure it has read and write privileges. You
may create a folder in the root directory that will contain the NE software.
Important!

There can be no spaces in the folder names in the path to the software.

........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Copy the folder and subfolders with the NE software into the FTP root directory
established above.
Note:

The software folder name will have the format 1830PSS32-<ver>, where
<ver> is the version of software to be loaded. There should also be two subfolders
named 1830PSS32 and 1830PSSM. The software will typically be provided on a
CD.

Introduction
Upgrade guidelines for Release 2.0.0

The active software release on the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 system must be Release
1.1 or Release 2.0.0-CI before beginning the upgrade to Release 2.0.0. The system turn-up
procedures described in the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch 32 (PSS-32)
Installation and System Turn-up Guide should have been completed.
Required materials list

The following items are required when using WebUI:

Personal computer (PC) running Windows 2000 or XP.

The following software should be loaded on the PC.

Internet Explorer version 6 or greater

SUN Java Runtime Environment version 5 or greater

Telnet application

FTP server software (required for software download)

TFTP server software (required for database backup and restore)

10/100 BaseT LAN card and a shielded RJ45 straight through cable. This is required if
connecting locally to an NE.
Note:

It is extremely important that the RJ45 cable be shielded. Unshielded RJ45

cables do not provide adequate protection to the system hardware.

1354 RM-PhM Release 7.0 if that application is to be used.

Required change notices (CNs)

There are no required change notices published for this software release.
Precautions and recommendations

Be sure to read and understand the following:

Read the entire software installation procedure before beginning.

The person performing the software upgrade must be trained and have an
understanding of the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 system.

Perform the software upgrade procedure in the sequence provided; any deviation may
lead to unpredictable behavior.

Use care when handling circuit packs.

Make use of ESD wrist straps and static-safe bags.

Perform database backup

Purpose

A database backup must be performed on each NE before beginning the upgrade. The
backed up database may be necessary if there is a significant failure either during or after
the upgrade.
The PC/server used to perform the database backup must have a TFTP server running. If
the backup is to be performed using 1354 RM-PhM Photonic Manager, that software
comes with its own TFTP server. Otherwise, the PC must have TFTP server software
loaded and configured.
PC preparation

Perform software upgrade

Purpose

This procedure will upgrade an Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS-32 NE running Release 1.1 or
Release 2.0.0-CI software to Release 2.0.0. You must perform the following tasks to load,
activate and commit the Release 2.0.0 software on the NE.
The PC/server used to perform the database backup must have an FTP server running. If
the upgrade is to be performed using 1354 RM-PhM Photonic Manager, that software
comes with its own FTP server. Otherwise, the PC must have FTP server software loaded
and configured.
FTP server preparation
Note:

Refer to Example configuration of ftp server (p. 5-54) for more detailed
instructions on configuring an ftp server.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

If 1354 RM-PhM Photonic Manager is to be used to perform the upgrade, skip to 1354
RM-PhM procedure (p. 5-34).
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Start the FTP server application on your PC and create a user account. Record the userid
and password established for the account.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Establish a root directory for the server and make sure it has read and write privileges. You
may create a folder in the root directory that will contain the NE software.
Important!

There can be no spaces in the folder names in the path to the software.

........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Copy the folder and subfolders with the NE software into the ftp root directory established
above.
Note:

The software folder name will have the format 1830PSS32-<ver>, where
<ver> is the version of software to be loaded. Within the folder there should be two
subfolders named 1830PSS32 and 1830PSSM and a file named CATALOG.
The software will typically be provided on a CD.

The Ask AL Knowledgebase web interface feature connects you to the Knowledge
Management solutions database. The Ask AL Knowledgebase feature lets you search for
solutions by using natural language queries. Many products have an extensive set of
Solutions available. Solutions are created by technicians to provide customers with a
method to resolve issues without calling for assistance. Solutions are displayed, showing
the percentage weight or percent match, based on search criteria. Searches can be
performed on all products that are entitled, through the level of service contract a customer
has for RTS services.
CARES

The CARES web interface feature makes it easy for you to submit an Assistance Request
(AR), subscribe to AR Notifications (be notified when an AR is updated), and view all the
customer ARs. The CARES feature lets you open an AR for low severity issues or
questions. Any high severity issue should be called into CTAM. Users can stay informed
about their ARs by using the flexible AR Notification subscriptions. Users can choose a
method for receiving updates: email, text messaging messages, or none. Users can choose
when updates are wanted (when the state of the AR changes, any update to the
investigation field occurs, or any time any text field is modified). Users can log into the
OLCS web site and view ARs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Data drop box

The Data Drop Box feature allows Alcatel-Lucent support technicians to provide
customers with a quick method to share files. The Data Drop Box allows a technician to
provide or receive a file from a customer quickly. These files remain in place for 7 days.
Documentation

The Documentation feature on the OLCS web site contains three areas: Manuals and
Guides, Technical Notes, and Release Information.

Manuals and Guides

This section contains the documents that are available in paper or electronic copy and
are distributed with a new product. These are the documents that are available within
the Alcatel-Lucent Product Documentation web site. The OLCS web site contains

Downloads
Note:

This may not apply to all products.

The Downloads area allows Alcatel-Lucent support technicians to provide access to

software downloads that are specific to a customers contract. This feature is only allowed
through negotiation with the Account Team and the Product Manager of the product.
Alcatel-Lucent alerts

The Alcatel-Lucent Alerts tool is a subscription-based tool that provides the same
information that our Product Notifications (PNs) did previously provide. This new method
of communication is a vehicle to share product and support issues that are of
informational, maintenance, or preventive nature. Alcatel-Lucent Alerts contain detailed
text descriptions and urgency of Alcatel-Lucent product issues that need to be quickly
communicated to customers after the deployment of a release or product.
Product change notices

The Product Change Notices (PCN) area provides information on hardware changes for a
product. There is a selection of choices to help you search for Change Notices (CNs) or
Customer Change Notices (CCNs).
Return material authorization (RMA) (repair and exchange)
Note:

This may not apply to all products.

The RMA area provides a list of contact information on all Alcatel-Lucent products. There
is a request an RMA number on-line for most Alcatel-Lucent products. An RMA
number is required for all returned parts and this feature provides you with an easy method
to obtain the RMA number. Please check the warranty status before submitting a request.

The technical support services expert workshop series

Audience: Technicians, installers, maintenance engineers, technical support personnel,

product evaluators, and anyone who has a working knowledge of the products involved
and is interested in a hands-on workshop covering advanced troubleshooting issues.
Description: The same engineers that resolve the Assistance Requests (ARs) have
developed a series of advanced, hands-on workshops that can be customized to the unique
network applications. Individual product modules will provide the knowledge and skills to
perform troubleshooting and fault-finding activities at the equipment site or from a remote
operations center. There are lab exercises using Alcatel-Lucent network management
systems to simulate real-world provisioning and troubleshooting scenarios. In addition,
general technology modules will round out the understanding of the network element (NE)
troubleshooting performed.
Objectives: Each module has specific objectives. Some overall series objectives are listed
below:

Understand advanced network element security features

Setup and understand interworking between Alcatel-Lucent network elements

Perform provisioning operations and remote trouble-shooting using CIT, EMS and
TL1 interfaces.

Analyze Performance Monitoring Data

Understand alarm handling / alarm management

Provision and understand system synchronization techniques

Provision and understand protection schemes (BLSR, UPSR, 1+1 APS)

Understand network communication issues (OSI and TCP/IP interfacing)

Length: Product Modules are scheduled for 3 days. Technology Modules are scheduled
for 1 day.
Expected Foundation Knowledge: Suggested prerequisites are listed on each module's
workshop description. Generally, customers should have a basic understanding of digital
fundamentals and lightwave transmission systems. In addition, customers should have
taken a previous Alcatel-Lucent Operating & Maintenance course or have equivalent
experience with operations and maintenance issues related to the product
Activities Prior to Workshop Delivery: The effectiveness of this workshop series relies
on the fact that it allows a customer to address the issues experienced in their network
today. To achieve this, prior to the workshop, a conference call will be set up with the
engineers that will facilitate the workshop. During this call, the logistics of simulating the
customer's network environment will be discussed.
