Week 3.

1 2D CURVES TO 3D OBJECTS
Today we covered basic modelling techniques in purpose of implementing outlines to a shape using
the curve tool. Modifiers can also be applied which transforms a 2D shape to a 3D project.
Extrusion will need to be added to transform a 2D shape into third dimension. I discovered there are
a number of ways of this procedure.
First step I did was draw curves using the Bezier tool creating an outline for an object. Thierafter the
curve was transformed to a 2D polygonal plane. This was then transformed to third dimension by
adding extrusion from the axis.

Once the curve is created, I learn the curve can be closed by changing to surfaces mode then
navigating to EDIT CURVES>CLOSE CURVE.
2.2 CURVES TO POLYGON SURFACES

The curve was curve was then transformed to a planer polygon by the navigation EDIT SURFACES>
PLANER. In the window which appears
I set the output geometry to polygons and specified 50 quads. Higher number of quads results
higher detail to the polygon figure.

I created a mail box by extruding the middle side faces of the object in to create the cavity.
2.3 EXTRUDING THE SURFACE
Example: Wine Glass
Using the Bezier Curve tool , create a curve on the TOP view panel as seen in the figure below:5
To close the curve select EDIT CURVES | OPEN / CLOSE CURVES.

I also discovered curves can be refined by using the control vertex within the curves marking menu.
This was done by right click holding on the curve. By manipulating the vertices to the desired
position, the curve can appear smoother.
I experimented with the RESOLVE tool within surfaces mode. To meet my best results I had to alter
the z axis and adjust the pivot points of rotation in the attribute editor.

2.5 MODELLING WITH REFERENCE IMAGES, CURVES AND

REVOLVE
When working with curves, it is common practise to use reference images in the background. Using
the

Images can be imported to the view panel by nagivating to IMAGE PLANE>IMPORT IMAGE. The
image appears as the backround to the view port. Using the imported image I was able to draw an
outline using the Bezier curves then transform it to a 3D shape by using the RESOVE modifier. I
found this a effective method for creating 3D models using drawing of outlines from a picture.

5 LAYERS
I learnt Layers can be added to separate objects and background images.
visibility can be switched on and off whenever needed which is really handy when editing objects.
There are also three types of layers: Display,
Render and Animation layers. Display layers can be accessed by Select the CHANNEL BOX / LAYER
EDITOR.
Selected objects can also be added to one layer by right clicng on the layer and clicking ADD
SELECTED OBJECTS. The V button next to a layer you hides all objects contained in the layer from
the view point.
9. The V toggles between T and R stands for Template and Render configures if the object will be
rendered in the production which is very handy to lock selections of objects preventing any
accidental editing.
