Aims
Learning Intention: To investigate spheres of earth:
Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere and
Atmosphere
Success Criteria: We can make a presentation
describing earths systems using an ICT
application

VELS: Strands, Domain, Foci and Standards

Students grouped into groups of 4-5depending on

the numbers on the given day.

Science
Global systems, including the carbon cycle,
rely on interactions involving the biosphere,
lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere
(ACSSU189)
English
Review, edit and refine students own and
others texts for control of content,
organisation, sentence structure, vocabulary,
and/or visual features to achieve particular
purposes and effects (ACELY1757)
Understand how paragraphs and images can
be arranged for different purposes,
audiences, perspectives and stylistic effects
(ACELA1567)

Align personal expectations of the students

with their understanding of the basic codes of
the classroom.
Outline the lesson structure at the beginning
of the class so students understand what
they are required to do and remain focused
Engage students by asking them to
participate in classroom task.

INTRODUCTION- 10 minutes
Connecting, Engaging and Modelling Inquiry
Engage:

Explain the learning intention and ask the

students what they think about earth spheres..
Students are given 2-3 minutes to write down
their own understanding about earth systems in
their notebooks.
Conduct a brainstorm on the board and asking
random students to contribute their answers,
followed by giving a base information of earth
spheres for further questioning and investigation.

MAIN BODY- 50 minutes

Guiding Inquiry and Practice
Explore:
Students find any one example of interactions of
earths sphere online. Ask random students to explain
their findings.
Explain:
Go over PowerPoint Presentation (Appendix B) on
Earths Spheres. Answer any questions students may
have and after each slide asking a random student to
reiterate what I explained to keep them engaged.
Elaborate:
Group students into groups of 4 or 5. Each group have
to research one earth sphere in detail assigned to
them using the criteria sheet (Appendix A) to answer
the 5 questions and find an example of each in any
Asian country.
Students present their findings in the form of Prezi for
8 minutes .
Use this time to observe the students contribution in
their groups, their level of understanding and having
conversations with the students.

CONCLUSION- 40 minutes
Sharing, Explaining and Reviewing Inquiry
Evaluate:
Each group comes in front to present their findings in
the form of ICT application.
All students write down feedback for each group in the
form of something they did well and something they
could improve on. At the end of each presentation, any
one student from all other groups give them feedback

e5 Instructional Model: This model has been embedded throughout the lesson plan. Students explore and elaborate their
understanding by the task of making a presentation. They also use Prezi, an ICT application to present their content.
Asia and Australias engagement with Asia: The students explore different examples of earth spheres in any one country in
Asia and Australia and present it to the class. This way all the students gain an understanding of different types of rocks, oceans,
atmospheric gases and living forms(birds) in Asia and Australia.
Interdisciplinary Learning:
ICT: The lesson takes place in the computer lab where they can use ICT applications and they use Prezi to present their findings to
the class. They develop new thinking and learning skills that produce creative and innovative insights. They create information
products that demonstrate their understanding of concepts, issues, relationships and processes.

Appendix A
Earths Spheres: Geosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere: Criteria Sheet
Each group has been assigned one earth sphere. The task is to find the following questions in relation to your respective earths sphere.
1. What is the definition of the earth sphere assigned to your group?
2. List some Earths sphere interactions that result from your own daily activities?
3. What effect do humans have on the Earth Spheres?
4. Find two pictures of the earth sphere assigned to your group.
After answering these questions, find the examples of each Earths Sphere in any one Asian country of your choice.
For Lithosphere: Find the types of rocks prevalent in the Asian country.
For Hydrosphere: Find Oceans, seas near the Asian country.
For Biosphere: Find common birds in the Asian country.
Foe Atmosphere: Find main pollutants in the Asian country.
