parent/teacher conferences, workshops, Open Houses, the New Family/Old Family
Reception, and any school sponsored programs in which their services may be needed.
Advance notice will be given for scheduled events.
Be prompt to all appointments (i.e. classes, meetings, chapel, lunch, carpool, etc.). Wear
your Canterbury ID badge at all times when on campus.
Use telephones, including those in the workrooms, primarily for school use. Calls for staff
will be transferred into voice mailboxes. Except in the case of an emergency, staff will not
be paged during the day.
Restrict personal cell phone and smartphone usage (including texting and emailing) on
campus, especially when supervising students.
Refrain from using the all-school page during the school day. Refrain from taking food or
drink to chapel services or full school gatherings. Refrain from chewing gum in front of
students.
Check their mailboxes in the administration building at least once a day, and in the
classroom buildings several times a day. Students should not be sent to check mailboxes under any
circumstances.
Check E-mail periodically during the day. While Canterbury does not prohibit occasional
use for personal reasons, computers and Internet access are provided primarily for
educational purposes.
The school reserves the right to monitor Internet use if there is cause. Each staff member
is responsible for monitoring the nature and amount of his or her own Internet access to
insure that the staff members use is not detrimental to other job responsibilities.
Check their voice mail extensions periodically during the day. Messages should be deleted
on a regular basis.
Provide timely responses to parental requests and concerns. As a general practice,
teachers should respond to parent emails and phone calls within 24 hours.

Email requests for maintenance work and repairs to Maintenance Director; cc. your
Division Director, who will help to prioritize the requests.
Let your Division Director and the front office know if you leave campus during the
school day.
Submit materials for the Chatter by e-mail by noon on Wednesday.

Substitutes
Please alert the appropriate Division Director as early as possible concerning an illness or other
necessary absence and be prepared with class work to be covered in your absence. Teachers are
expected to find their own substitutes using the school-approved list unless they are too sick to do so. Teachers
who are too sick to find a sub should call their Division Director. Remember that personal days
require prior written approval from your Division Director.
Substitutes are expected to cover all duties normally assigned to the regular teacher. Teachers are
expected to go over our Emergency Action Plans with each sub. Please alert subs that they must
sign in with the office each day they are on campus. Your Division Director should be alerted any time
you have arranged for a substitute.
Dress Guidelines
Staff members are expected to present a professional image at all times. While you may not
personally equate appearance with performance, please remember that many people do.
No jeans (except on casual dress days), tank tops, or clothing that exposes the midriff or bust line
are allowed.Staff members are expected to follow the 2 inch above the knee guideline when
wearing skirts, dresses, and shorts (even on casual dress days).
Men should wear button down shirts (tucked in at all times) and belts. Mens hair should remain
cut above the collar.
Every effort should be made to ensure that tattoos remain covered No facial piercings for men or
women. Men should have no visible piercings at all .
Workrooms/Copy Machines
Workrooms are for faculty and staff use only. Under no circumstances should students use any of
the equipment in the workrooms.Workrooms should be left neat and tidy at all times. Please
watch your conversations. Professionalism needs to be paramount. People - parents, students,
guests - pass by these areas constantly.
Canterbury currently has copy machines in the following locations: library
lower school work room, administrative building (not for classroom use, please), middle school
workroom
When using the copiers, please keep the following in mind:Because of the volume of work carried
in the administrative building, THAT COPY MACHINE IS PRIMARILY FOR OFFICE

USE. Please be aware of copyright laws and restrictions when considering copying from
textbooks. In the event one of the machines breaks down or needs toner, notify the administrative
office. Please DO NOT attempt repairs yourself.
Please use paper supplies sparingly and remember that white paper is considerably cheaper than
colored paper. Please recycle at all times! When possible, copy on both sides of the paper.Send
electronic communication when possible. Remember that documents can be scanned if you do
not have them in electronic format. The office should be notified as soon as the last case of paper
is opened so that more can be ordered.
Staff/Community Relations
Staff should set a good example in their relationships with colleagues and students, exhibiting
good manners and thoughtful and considerate behavior at all times. Staff should be mindful of
the impact of their words and actions on a childs self image.
Staff should be supportive of Canterbury School on campus and in the community. They should
be loyal and complimentary of administration, staff, students, and fellow colleagues while in the
public domain. All problems and concerns should not only be addressed sensitively, but also
internally and professionally.
Classroom Management/Instruction
Program: Lessons need to reflect age appropriate skills, the scope and sequence of instruction, fair
student assessments, the Curriculum Standards, the Desired Results of Student Learning
(DRSL), and the mission of the school. Faculty should follow their curriculum guides. Faculty
have input into changing the curriculum pending approval of the Program Team, which includes
the Division Heads, Academic Dean, Chaplain, and the Head of School.
The teacher should plan a well-balanced program of academic skills, creative activities, thinking
skills, and problem solving. Field trips and other enriching activities should be included when
appropriate.
Canterbury encourages faculty to use innovative techniques to reach their students, but
recognizes the value of planning thoroughly before initiating changes.
When Trying Something New, Creative, and Innovative....
Is it guided by the Curriculum Standards and the Desired Results of Student
Learning (DRSL)?
Are you clear about how it will further enhance the learning process and meet
specific goals in your lesson?
Are parents clear about the learning process and what their role will be?
Are students clear about what we expect of them?
Have you thought about all elements of controversy that may arise?
Have you shared your ideas with another teacher and the Division Director?

Are you organized and can you clearly define the educational steps you will follow?
Have you thought through all that could go wrong, and all that could go right?
Lower School Academics
Lower School teachers should make it a priority to teach math for 60 minutes each day and
language arts for 90 minutes each day. Typing homework should be assigned each week in
grades 2-4. As a general rule, specialty teachers should refrain from asking classroom teachers for
additional time.
Discipline
No Canterbury School employee, volunteer, or contractor shall inflict any form of corporal
punishment upon any student under any circumstances. Rather, discipline should be handled
using principles outlined in the Behavior Expectation Policy (Lower School) and in Developmental
Designs for Middle School (Middle School).
Budgets:
Teachers are responsible for ordering supplies within their allotted budgets and guidelines. (See
Ordering Instructions and Forms.) Items for the current years budget must be received (and signed for) by
June 30.
Requests for Reimbursement:
Reimbursement requests MUST include a supervisors signature and should be submitted within
30 days of incurring the expense. Teachers must ensure that reimbursement requests do not
exceed allotted budgets.
Homework
Lower School: All teachers are expected to post homework on their faculty web pages weekly by
Monday at 3:30pm or daily by 3:30pm. Students will still be expected to maintain their
homework agendas daily, as homework assignments might change.
Middle School: All teachers are expected to post homework on their faculty web pages weekly by
Monday at 3:30pm. Students will still be expected to maintain their homework agendas daily, as
homework assignments might change.
HOMEWORK (taken from the Parent Directory):
Canterbury considers homework to be an integral part of daily school life and a valuable
educational tool. Through homework, students are able to master more fully concepts taught in
the classroom, to practice creative thinking or writing skills, and to develop their capacity to
teach themselves. Well-planned assignments encourage the growth of study and organizational
skills and a sense of competency and confidence in each student. The amount of time required
for assignments will increase as a student moves through to the higher grades. Canterbury urges
all parents to arrange a regular time and a quiet, comfortable place for their child to work
without distractions or interruptions. Please contact your child's teacher if you feel your child is spending too
little or too much time and effort in doing homework. Finally, while we believe in the necessity and

importance of homework, we also believe in the importance of leaving some time in a child's day
for play, relaxation, family time, and extra-curricular activities. For this reason, we will
occasionally establish homework-free nights during the school year.
Though teachers are responsible for making assignments clear and for posting homework
assignments on their faculty webpages each week, it is the responsibility of each student to record
homework assignments, test dates, and project deadlines in his or her Academic Agenda. As part of our study
skills program, all teachers will review and reemphasize how to use the agenda to record
assignments in a routine and uniform way. Students are encouraged to do their best and, as
necessary, to seek help from subject area teachers in the morning before classes begin, at
lunchtime, or after school. Because we are trying to teach students to be responsible and because
homework is important, students are held accountable for assignments and may be asked to
complete assignments during lunch.
Canterbury does not allow forgotten homework to be faxed to the school, nor do we allow students to phone home for
forgotten homework. No homework will be assigned on nights prior to ERB CTP 4 testing; however,
homework may be assigned on nights prior to the ERB Writing Assessment.
In addition to regular homework assignments, long-range assignments will occur periodically.
These require students to budget time and organize materials beyond the scope of daily work.
Parental support for our homework policies will be appreciated. Should any questions arise about
homework, parents should contact the individual subject teacher before contacting the administration of the school.
Canterbury is sensitive to religious
holidays. Please contact your childs teacher if you have a specific need. Unless otherwise instructed, homework is to
be completed as an individual effort.
Grades 1, 2
In the early years, homework takes the form of practice and drill in reading, mathematics,
spelling, and penmanship. It usually does not exceed 20 to 30 minutes each evening. Teachers
often assign additional independent reading. Recognizing that weekends are special family times,
homework is assigned only Monday through Thursday.
Grades 3, 4
At this level, homework should require an hour or so for completion. Homework may include a
variety of activities: practicing previously learned materials, reviewing or applying new concepts,
studying for tests, or preparing for the next days lessons. There will be some evenings when
homework will not be assigned in all subjects and some when additional independent reading is
assigned. On occasional weekends, some homework may be given.
Grades 5, 6, 7, 8
Students in the middle school should expect to spend approximately twenty minutes each night
per subject completing assignments and reviewing material covered in class. We recognize,
however, that students may differ in the amount of time needed to complete a given assignment
satisfactorily. The purpose of assignments may be: application or reinforcement of new

information or concepts, reading new material, practice or application of writing and analytical
skills, or studying in preparation for a test. Students will have no more than two tests per day.
Teachers will use their planning time and an on-line calendar to coordinate assignments for longterm projects and tests. This on-line calendar is available to students and parents to access from
home as they plan and prepare for major assignments.
It is the responsibility of middle school students to check in with each teacher before a planned absence and again
upon return. Middle school students returning from being sick should also check in with each teacher about missed
assignments.
Faculty Access to Student Records
Permanent records are maintained on each student in the main office. Files may be reviewed in
the office by faculty members as appropriate. The contents of all student records are considered
confidential and should be used for professional purposes only.
Evaluations for Other Schools
All requests for teachers to complete evaluations for other schools should be shared with the
appropriate Division Director as soon as they are received. Once completed, the evaluations
should be given to the Division Director for review, copying, and mailing. Forms should only be
mailed by the Division Director.
Evaluations for Psychologists and Outside Testing
Teachers who are asked to fill out questionnaires/rating scales on particular children for
psychologists or testing purposes should immediately notify the Student Support Specialist in
their division. She will coordinate the process and mail the forms once they are completed. Forms
should only be mailed by the Student Support Specialists.
Court Appearances/Statements
No staff member should agree voluntarily to appear in court or prepare a statement on behalf of
a child for either parent for legal purposes. Your Division Director or the Head of School should
be notified immediately if a parent makes a request of this nature. Faculty are expected to
maintain a working relationship with both parents on behalf of each child.
School Security
Canterbury makes every effort to provide a secure environment for students and staff. Doors to
all classroom buildings are locked throughout most of the day, and teachers, students and parents
gain access using a fob (keyless entry device). Staff should not prop doors open during the school
day.
Fobs are available to staff members for free and to parents for $20.00. Parents who purchase a
fob may use it to enter any classroom building from 7:30 am-4:30 pm without checking in
through the office. At Armfield Hall, the fob can be waved in front of the keypad for access.
Parents who choose not to purchase a fob must check in through the office. All staff members are
asked to wear their official school nametag throughout the school day.

Doors to classroom buildings are open from 7:30-8:00 am to allow students to enter freely as they
arrive at school. Each teacher is given an additional loaner fob to loan to students to gain
access to buildings. Teachers are asked to make every effort to ensure that students are not locked out of buildings
when moving across campus.
Lost fobs should be reported immediately to the Manager of Buildings and Grounds.
Record Keeping:
EACH TEACHER IS TO INSIST ON A TARDY SLIP FROM THE OFFICE FOR ANY
STUDENT ARRIVING AFTER 8:00AM. Tardy slips for arrival from 8:01-8:10 will be issued
by a designated staff member in the classroom building. After 8:10, tardy slips will be issued in
the front office or in the back of chapel on chapel days. Homeroom is from 8:00-8:10am
everyday. To ensure we have an accurate head count in case of an emergency, attendance must be completed online
every day by 8:45am.
If any staff member needs to send a child to the office for a minor medical situation (scrapes,
headaches, etc.), please make sure the child has a nurses pass or note with the appropriate
information from the teacher. Nurses passes may be made using the master copy in this
handbook. Any staff member administering medications from the office is required to sign the
medications log.
If a child is hurt at school, the staff member must fill out a Canterbury School Accident Report and give it to the
Division Director.
If students need items from the kitchen, they should see someone in the office.
Teacher Responsibilities
DO NOT LEAVE CLASSES UNATTENDED. Accompany your classes TO and
FROM all special subjects if you are a PreK-4 teacher. PLEASE BE PROMPT
BOTH TIMES. Any exceptions need administrative approval.
Begin and dismiss classes on time. Middle school teachers in Stafford are asked to dismiss
two minutes early.
Require that all students walk quietly in the corridors.
Do not allow students to have radios, cassette players, disc players, pagers, cell phones,
games or other portable electronic devices in class, unless they are to be used for
instructional purposes.
Do not allow students to chew gum unless the child needs gum to address sensory motor
deficiencies.
Uphold the school dress code at all times.
Keep hallways and classrooms free of clutter.
Accompany and monitor your students during assemblies and chapels.
Do not cluster with other teachers during recess. Position yourselves to supervise all areas
of activity. Inform your students about the guidelines for playground safety included in

this handbook.
Accompany your students to the carpool area. Have all of your students in their seats in Phillips
Chapel for carpool before 3:15pm. Stay with your students until all of them have safely
departed. Be alert to safety at all times. Remind all students of dismissal procedures.
Be on time if you have morning carpool duty, which begins at promptly at 7:45, or
afternoon carpool duty, which begins promptly at 3:15. Ask someone to cover for you if
you will be late or unavailable.
Do not allow students to use the telephones in the offices and classrooms, except in the
case of an emergency.
Do not allow students to call home for forgotten homework and lunches. Faxed
homework assignments are also not allowed.
If you allow a child to call home and expect a return call from the parents, alert the office
so the call can be properly routed. Remind children to leave a message so the return call
can be routed properly.
Remember you are responsible for students until the last student has gone home if you
are an after-school teacher or coach.
Non-chapel days could begin with some type of prayer or devotion if you are a
homeroom teacher. Examples may include the Canterbury School prayer, Prayer for
Each Day, the Lords Prayer, or any other appropriate prayer. Involve students in
selections and delivery of prayer.
Consider offering a blessing before lunch.

Accident/Emergency Procedures
Each staff member has a crisis management plan and a crisis backpack hanging in his or her
classroom or office. Staff members are responsible for knowing the crisis guidelines and for
following them in the event of an emergency. Remember that it is your responsibility to inform substitute
teachers about the crisis plan and backpack if you are away from school.
If a child is involved in an accident and is injured, fill out an accident report form, call the
parents, and notify your Division Director.
Emergency Student Check-out Procedures
There are three ways you may release a student to someone other than the students parents in
the event of an emergency. In each case, the parents must grant permission for the specific person
to take the child.
1. Verbal permission from the parents given over the phone (must recognize voice)
2. Written permission from the parents.
3. Written permission granted on the Emergency Medical Data Form.
Students should be released to these adults only when the parents cannot be reached.
Laptop Learners Guidelines
Some students benefit from the use of a laptop throughout the school day. Recommendations for

students to join the Laptop Learner program should be brought to the Student Support
Specialists, who will make the final determination in collaboration with the Division Director.
Personal laptop use is a need-based accommodation that may apply to class work, classroom
testing, and standardized testing. Each students need for this accommodation must be
documented by an appropriate evaluation, and student and parents must understand and sign an
agreement that includes specific guidelines. The student will not loan or share the laptop with
friends during school hours. Our IT Director will check computers for proper school use (blocked
sites, limited internet access and security, etc).
Laptop learners are responsible for the safety/security of their own computers. They should go
home with the child daily.
Students with no Computer at Home
Please do not assume that all of our students and parents have access to a computer or tablet and
the internet while at home. Talk to your Division Director if you need to determine a plan to
meet the needs of a specific student. The school might be able to arrange a short-term loan of a
computer or iPad or a time after school when the student can stay on campus to work on one of
our computers.
Chapel
All staff on campus at the time of chapel are expected to attend the full school chapels. Chapel for the full
school is held every Monday and Friday. Chapel for grades K-4 is Wednesday mornings on blue
weeks (week 1); chapel for grades 5-8 is Wednesday mornings on white weeks (week 2). Please see
that students are in Phillips Chapel in their places at 8:10am, and that they remain quiet. Chapel
will begin promptly at 8:15am.
Communication/Reporting to Parents
Each Thursday an e-Chatter, the weekly newsletter for the school, is sent home sharing the
notable activities scheduled for the following week as well as other important information.
Faculty are required to complete report cards on each student at the end of each marking period.
The reports should accurately reflect the childs strengths and weaknesses. They also need to
communicate our commitment to and belief in the value of each child. BE SURE TO SPELL
THE STUDENTS NAME CORRECTLY. Treat comments on reports as a necessary and
effective tool of communication. Please proofread carefully, paying attention to spelling,
grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure. If a checklist is used, faculty are to make sure that
the checklist items and their written commentary complement each other. AVOID MAKING
STATEMENTS THAT COMPARE ONE STUDENTS PERFORMANCE TO
ANOTHERS OR TO THE CLASS.
The Division Director and the Student Support Specialist(s) must approve any changes to the
standard course of study (i.e. exemption from foreign language) for students with learning needs.
Please make sure that any approved changes to the standard course of study for the learning
differences of individual children are reflected on those childrens report cards.

10

The grading scale and interpretive guidelines provide us with a common base from which to
operate. Grading scales are included in this handbook.
Teachers are expected to return all papers and tests, with corrections, within two weeks so that
students can benefit from reviewing the work. Always remember that parents will see any work
you evaluate.
It is important that, at the outset, each teacher communicate expectations to students - such as
homework, papers, examinations, neatness, mechanics, spelling, and penmanship. Long-term
assignments should be communicated well in advance so that students can learn to plan
accordingly.
Always introduce in class the material to be covered in homework assignments. Homework is to be a
learning experience (reinforcement) rather than a punitive one. (Homework guidelines are in this
handbook.)
Middle school teachers will use planning time and an online calendar to coordinate test scheduling
and major projects. Middle school students will have no more than 2 tests per day.
Parent conferences:
Faculty members are to confer with parents as needs arise. This is particularly important between
report periods because, without any communication, parents understandably assume that the
academic performance and behavior of their child are satisfactory. Please date and summarize
the highlights of each conference in writing for your files. Telephone conferences should also be
on record. It is vital to keep the Administration informed of parental concerns.
Remember that parents not only like to hear specific news about their childs school experience,
but also to have personal contact with faculty members. Newsletters, Good News postcards,
monthly calendars, and periodic phone calls are a few of the many possible ways to keep parents
informed and excited about our programs and us.
Please plan ahead in order to provide plenty of time for your Division Director to proofread and approve any
communication you intend to send home to parents. This step is necessary not only to keep your Division
Director informed, but also to make sure the content of the information being sent home is
accurate. Under no circumstances should parents be asked for money for field trips, lunches,
presents, etc. without approval from your Division Director.
As a general rule, to protect the privacy of our staff members the school does not give out home
phone numbers and addresses. Teachers will share their individual preferences for
communication with parents on Back-to-School Night. Voice mail extensions and email
addresses for each staff member are listed in the back of the directory.
Faculty (including specialty teachers) are required to provide feedback on each visiting admission
candidate who attends class. It should be completed on the same day of the visit and returned to

11

the Division Director or Admission staff.
Teacher recommendations
When a teacher receives a form to complete for another school, he/she should show the blank
form to his/ her Division Director as soon as it is received. A blank copy of the form will be made
before it is completed by the teacher. Once completed, the form should be returned to the
Division Director to be copied and mailed. In no circumstance should a teacher mail the completed form or
provide a copy to the parent.
Classroom Maintenance
Faculty should order materials and supplies through their Division Director.
Faculty are responsible for the care and upkeep of their classrooms and materials. Faculty
should follow the cleaning instructions provided each year by the Director of Facilities.
Bulletin boards should be attractive, have an instructional purpose, and be updated
periodically.
Classrooms should be neat and well ventilated.
All staff members should be aware of energy usage and waste. Thermostats should be set
on 68for heating, and 72 for cooling. Please contact the Division Director when there is
a problem.
All staff members should be alert for littering and defacing of property and take
appropriate action if such occurs.
WINDOWS IN CLASSROOM DOORS SHOULD NOT BE COVERED UP.
ALL WINDOWS SHOULD BE CLOSED AND LOCKED AT THE END OF THE
DAY. Students are expected to help in all housekeeping matters.
Fire regulations in Guilford County stipulate that we cannot completely cover the
classroom walls with paper and posters. If using butcher paper and posters, you may
cover 20% of your wall space.
BERRY HALL/PHILLIPS CHAPEL Operational Guidelines
A sound check should be conducted prior to any event in Berry Hall or Phillips Chapel. This
sound check should be arranged by the person in charge of the event through the Manager of
Buildings and Grounds.
Please help us preserve the beauty of our buildings by following these guidelines:
All students should be accompanied by an adult when in Berry Hall or Phillips Chapel.
Scenery, props and/or classroom projects may not be constructed in Berry Hall or
Phillips Chapel.
No painting or painting clean up may be done in either building by anyone other than
the maintenance crew.
After events conclude, staff members should promptly remove all props and clean the
event area.

12

Art and Display Areas in Berry:
Art and display layouts are to be approved by Facility and Administrative staff. Items are to be
hung in designated spaces and on bulletin boards.
Additional Berry Hall Guidelines
Students are responsible for cleaning their tables at lunchtime under the supervision of parents
and/or faculty members. There should be no food or drink on the stage at anytime.Anyone who
uses the kitchen should clean it before leaving.
All storage areas should be locked at the conclusion of any event or luncheon.
Sound Room And Balcony
The access door is to be locked at all times, unless during an event where there is faculty
supervision. To have access to the sound booth, parents and students must be accompanied by a
faculty/staff member
To work the sound booth, a trained sound technician must be present. The trained technician
will be arranged by the Manager of Buildings and Grounds. No drinks or food are allowed in the
sound booth.
End of Year Procedures
In May, each teacher will receive a checkout sheet from his or her Division Director. Faculty are
responsible for completing all steps outlined on the sheet before leaving for the summer.
Recycling Program
Teaching children to care for Gods precious Earth is part of the Canterbury curriculum. The
Canterbury community recycles paper, cardboard, and aluminum cans. Each classroom is
supplied with a special trashcan for recycling paper. Teachers are encouraged to participate in
garbageless lunch whenever possible.
Service Learning
In Lower School, each homeroom teacher is responsible for planning and implementing a grade
level service learning project. In Middle School, advisors should coordinate their grade levels
service experiences with the Service Learning Coordinator. All students are expected to
participate.
