AIMS

To determine the characteristic of flow over a rectangular notch and V notch.

To determine the discharge of coefficient of rectangular notch and V notch.

PROCEDURE
General procedure
1.
2.
3.
4.

The hydraulic pump was securely connected.

The collection tank drain valve was opened to allow flow discharge back into sump tank.
The flow over weirs apparatus was set up on the hydraulic bench.
The thumb nuts that secure the rectangular notch weir plate being close tightly.

Flow Characteristics over Weirs Experiment

1. Weir apparatus was leveled on the hydraulic bench and the rectangular notch weir being
installed.
2. The hydraulic bench flow control valve was slowly opened to allow water to the channel
until the water discharges over the weir plate. The water level is even with the crest of the
weir.
3. Flow control valve was closed and the water is stabilized.
4. The Vernier Gauge was set to datum reading using the top of the hook.
5. The water was flow into the channel and the water flow being adjusted by using
hydraulic bench flow control valve to obtain heads (H).
6. The head reading was obtained in every increasing of about 1 cm when the water flow
condition is stable.
7. Step 4 and 5 was repeated for different flow rate.
8. The reading of volume and time was taken by using volumetric tank to calculate the flow
rate.
9. The rectangular weir was replaced with V notch weir.
10. The result was recorded in the table.
General shut down procedures
1. The hydraulic bench flow control valve and close water supply were closed.
2. The residue water was emptied from channel and sump tank by ensuring the drain tank
valve is open.
