vehicles. C hildren’s L iteracy , 1-800-339-7790. Perfume Set Q: I have a perfume set from

Perfume Set Q: I have a perfume set from the late 1940s manufactured by Bourjois under the name Evening in Paris. The set is unopened and still in its satin-lined box. How

much do you think it’s worth? --

Alice, via e-mail

A: I spoke to several perfume- bottle collectors. The fact that your

set is still in its original box adds to the value. Evening in Paris products were inexpensive and are

fairly common. Most of the sets

were marketed in dime and drug

stores throughout the 1940s and

‘50s. I checked eBay to see if sets were available online, and they were. I spotted an Evening in Paris

set by Bourjois that eventually sold

for $26. Dozens of the individual bottles and powder boxes were selling in the $2 to $10 range. *** Q: I have a collection of old newspaper cartoon strips collected between 1929 and 1950, all original panels by the artists. Some of the pieces in this collection are inscribed to my dad, John Heck. Due to a water leak about 30 years ago, many of the panels were damaged. If I have them restored, would this lessen their value? -- Jim, Carson City, Nev. A: I have two sources that might be helpful. The National Cartoonist Society is my first pick. The contact information is 341 North Maitland Ave., Suite 130, Maitland, FL 32741; www.reuben.org; and info@reuben.org. Check out the club’s Web site before you contact it. The Cartoon Research Library at Ohio State University has been involved in restoration for a number of years, and you might also seek help there (http:// cartoons.osu.edu/). ***

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles New Year’s Resolutions the Easy Way A New Year’s resolution is a promise you make to yourself. Keeping that promise isn’t easy, though. Sometimes we choose resolutions that are impossible to keep because they’re too broad or beyond our capabilities. Or the plan falls apart the first time the going gets tough. Still, there can be benefits to

making resolutions, even if we

only keep them for a short time. Here are a few to consider. The specifics are up to you. • Volunteer.

something else to get the same result.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Will Septic System Handle the Holidays? Q: We bought a farmhouse just two months ago, and as it’s our first

Christmas in a place big enough to host several people, we’ve invited the whole family to visit for several days. My father-in-law told me, “Hope your septic system holds up.” I hadn’t really thought about it until he mentioned it, but could a lot of people cause problems with the septic system? -- Carl in Claremont, N.H. A: It’s not the most pleasant subject to discuss during the holidays, but yes, a sudden influx of users, more than a septic system normally handles, can cause problems like backups. And it seems like problems always occur at the height of holiday craziness. So, thinking about it ahead of time is important, especially if you’re not sure what condition the system is in. You might have had the system checked during the home-buying process as part of the house inspection. However, if the check didn’t provide much information on the system’s condition, and if you’re not sure how long the septic system sat unused while the property was for sale, schedule a much more thorough inspection before the festivities begin.

A septic system specialist will check how full the tank currently is, make

sure it’s processing waste correctly, and check the drain field to make sure the processed liquid is dispersing well. He’ll pump the tank if

necessary and, if any repairs are needed, will schedule them. You can

ask him straight out if the system can handle the influx of guests. He

also should tell you the size of the septic tank and how often it should be

maintained.

Here’s a few tips on taking care of the system between visits:

• A well-maintained system shouldn’t need a bacterial additive like Rid-

X, but if the system has sat unused and a specialist can’t be scheduled

before the holidays, add some according to package instructions.

• Don’t let guests park cars on the drain field; expensive damage can occur.

• Objects like cigarette butts, diapers, sanitary napkins, paper towels,

coffee grounds and filters should never be flushed into the septic system. These will clog the filters.

• Don’t dump grease down the drain.

• If you have a garbage disposal, make sure it is in top condition and

grinds up food completely.

• Chemicals kill the bacteria responsible for breaking down waste and

can also affect groundwater in the area. Use cleaners sparingly and don’t dump paint thinner, oil, gasoline or other pollutants into the system.

• Actively reduce the amount of water you use -- even during holiday

entertaining. Simple things like only running the dishwasher when full and placing a brick inside the toilet tank to displace some of the water used to flush will make a difference. HOME TIP: A 1,000-gallon septic tank supporting a family of four people normally needs to be maintained every three to five years. Send questions or home-repair tips to homeguru2000@hotmail.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Bible Study Verse: Acts 4:32

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.” (NIV)

While walking along the Rush River in Wisconsin looking

for a place to wet a fly, I saw a gentleman fishing. I stopped and asked him how he was doing. He stated he was doing very well with one of his own fly patterns. He insisted on giving me a couple of flies and told me to try this stretch of the river. I thanked him for sharing, and he headed upstream.

I caught several nice fish and was very thankful for his

thoughtfulness. Later that spring, some of my students expressed an interest in fly fishing. I taught them how to tie some simple patterns and we went fishing. As I upgraded my equipment, I gave away some of my equipment to my students. They wanted to pay me. I remembered the generosity of that gentleman on the Rush, and told them that fly fishermen don’t take money for flies or used equipment--we share. This started a long-lasting relationship with these young people.

I was blessed ten-fold. (Tom L.)

Action Point

Dig out some of that old equipment and get someone started fly fishing. It’s a great opportunity to witness and be a role model for young people.

THE KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis Chicken Pie Warms Up Winter Chicken pie is one of the first dishes I successfully made as a newlywed almost 35 years ago. It has become one of my favorite comfort-food recipes. Savory pies date back to the Medieval era. Originally, the sole purpose of the double crust was to protect the

ingredients from the metallic flavor of the pot. The crust wasn’t designed to be eaten and was discarded after the filling was cooked. This single-crust chicken pie recipe is a savory combination of modern convenience products and classic homemade touches. Use a leftover baked chicken or a store-bought rotisserie chicken, leftover cooked vegetables or frozen mixed vegetables, and a frozen pie crust to cut the prep time in half. The creamy sauce combined with the chicken and vegetable filling, and topped with a layer of sharp cheddar cheese turns this classic pie into a hearty, one-dish meal. The filling can be made in advance and either refrigerated or frozen. Just make sure that you heat the filling before sprinkling on the cheese and topping it with the pie crust. This savory chicken pie recipe is great way to warm up during a cold winter day. CHEDDAR CHEESE CHICKEN PIE

1 (2 to 2 1/2 pounds) cooked chicken, meat cut into chunks, skin and bones removed and discarded

1

stick butter, divided

1

medium onion, diced

3

stalks celery, diced

2

cloves garlic, diced

1

(16-ounce) bag frozen soup or stew vegetables

2

teaspoons poultry seasoning, divided

1

1/2 teaspoons salt, divided

1 teaspoon pepper, divided 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon sugar

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup cream, evaporated milk or buttermilk

1 cup chicken broth 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese

1 (9-inch) frozen pie crust

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 2-quart casserole dish.

2. Melt 4 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Stir in onion, celery and garlic. Cook until tender, about 5 minutes. 3. Stir in chicken and frozen vegetables, 1 teaspoon of the poultry seasoning and salt, 1/2 teaspoon of the pepper, the cayenne pepper and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the

chicken mixture from the skillet and place it in the prepared casserole dish. Set aside.

4. To make the sauce, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter in the skillet over

medium heat. Whisk flour and remaining teaspoon of poultry seasoning

into the butter; turn heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until light brown and thick, about 3 minutes. Turn heat to high and slowly whisk in the cream, evaporated milk or buttermilk. Whisk in the chicken broth. Continue whisking until mixture thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the remaining salt and pepper, and the nutmeg.

5. Pour the cream sauce over the chicken mixture, stirring to coat the

mixture evenly. Sprinkle the chicken mixture with the cheese. Top the filling with the prepared pie crust, pressing the crust down around the edges of the dish to seal the crust over the filling. Cut three, 1-inch slits in the center of the crust to allow steam to escape. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until crust is brown and golden. Serves 6 to 8. NOW HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• Use a clothespin to clip coupons to your shopping cart. This will

save you time at the checkout counter, since they’ll be front and center for use.

• “Before piping frosting on cookies or cupcakes with a design, I first

trace the design using a toothpick. Then, I know for sure the words or image will fit properly. Also, my kids can be the ‘tracers’ and finish up with the piping, saving me time and allowing them to participate.” -- L.C. in Nebraska

• “Keep a few address labels with you wherever you go. You’d be

surprised how handy they are for filling out forms and such. I just stick a label on and I’m on my way.” -- T.T. in Minnesota

• “Rub baby oil around the edges of a bandage when you are going to

remove it. Let it soak for several seconds, and pulling off the bandage will be relatively painless. I do this for my child all the time.” -- L.B. in Texas

• To neutralize diaper pail odors, sprinkle a cup of baking soda in the bottom of the pail.

The Dollar General Store in Bolivar,
NY began collecting toys and monetary
donations for their Annual Toy Drive the day
after Thanksgiving. Georgia Prosser,
Manager of the Bolivar Dollar General,
enlisted the help of Kenyon Andrus Post
#772 Legion and Auxiliary members to help
wrap the toys and distribute them to area
children.
On Sunday, Dec. 13th, Santa visited
the Bolivar American Legion and several
gifts were handed out to local children. The
remaining toys were distributed to the
Bolivar Area Head Start children and B-RCS
Pre-K students on Wed., Dec. 16 at the Pre-
K building.
Dollar General and the Legion and
Auxiliary wish to thank the community for
supporting this charitable project. It was a
great success and your generosity provided
over 80 toys for children in our area.

Soldiers’ Angels

Soldiers’ Angels is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and their families. Founded by the mother of two American soldiers, we are an international, volunteer-led organization supporting America’s men and women in uniform. With over 30 different teams and projects, our nearly 200,000 volunteers assist veterans, wounded and deployed personnel and their families in a variety of unique and effective ways. “May No Soldier Go Unloved,” encapsulates the motivation behind Soldiers’ Angels. The volunteers of Soldiers’ Angels work tirelessly to demonstrate active care and concern for veterans, the wounded, deployed service members and their families. To date, our volunteers have sent hundreds of thousands of care packages and letters to deployed service members; we have supplied the wounded with our First Response Packs directly at the Combat Support Hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan and the major military hospital in Germany, as well as provided care and comfort to those in stateside military and VA facilities; we have provided emergency aid to military families in need; we have partnered with the Department of Defense to provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptops to nearly 3,000 severely- wounded servicemembers, as well as other technology that supports rehabilitation; we have provided flights to soldiers on leave or in emergency situations, and to their families wanting to be with them upon return from overseas; we have provided Level III KEVLAR armored blankets to give personnel extra protection in their vehicles when it was needed; we help to honor and uphold the families whose loved ones have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety. With the assistance of our generous supporters , the many volunteers of Soldiers’ Angels have accomplished this and much, much more on behalf of the grateful citizens of the United States of America.

Prayer for Our Military
The Rev. William J. Bleiler, state chaplain of the New Jersey VFW, wrote the
following “Prayer for Our Military” for distribution to VFW members. He is
pastor of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Cedarville, Cumberland
County.
Almighty God, our Source of strength and courage, we ask Thee to guide the
leaders of nations in the ways of peace and justice and enduring freedom for the
peoples of the world.
In these times of peril and war against terrorism listen to our prayers for the men
and women serving in our armed forces, our military leaders and our allies.
Protect them all from harm as they go into battle on land, in the sea and in the air.
Take away whatever fear from their hearts and enable them to overcome swiftly
and decisively the violence and cruelty of the enemy.
Protect them from the hatred of others and bolster their personal pride of being
American as they rid our world of the works of darkness and weapons of mass
destruction.
Console their loved ones and family members who remain on the home front.
Gently dry the tears of those who mourn for the wounded in battle and those who
have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Oh God, bless them with Thy presence. Grant us homeland security. May Thy
Peace, the fruit of justice, truth and mercy, reign in America and throughout the
world. Amen.

While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Resolutions for You and Your Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As part of my usual new year’s resolution to lose weight, I also made a resolution this year for my dog “Jerry” to lose weight as well. We’re both on a diet, and we walk together. Is it unusual for an owner to make a resolution for his dog? -- Carl in Brooklyn, N.Y. DEAR CARL: I don’t have any statistics on it, but I have a hunch that lots of owners include their pets in their new year’s resolutions. And it’s not an unwelcome idea, either -- including positive changes for your pet as well as yourself can only be good. I applaud your including Jerry in your weight-loss plans, particularly in taking him with you for walks. This year, we should all resolve to spend more time with our pets. The

American Kennel Club is encouraging dog owners to try new ways of training, such as training toward a goal like the AKC Canine Good Citizens Test (akc.org/ events/cgc), or training for a competitive event. Cats, which seem to do well all by themselves, actually benefit from extra companionship and, especially if they’re exclusively indoor cats, often need to be prompted toward more activity. Frequent, active play times, where the cat chases a toy or plays with an object dangled in front of it, should take place daily. In fact, all pets benefit from frequent interaction with their owners, regardless of whether they’re cuddly or not (fish, I’m thinking of you). So this year, resolve to not just spend more time with your pet, but to make an active difference in your pet’s life. It will benefit both of you. Send your questions to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or e-mail ask@pawscorner.com.
