Dragonfly Craft for Kids

The last insect we are learning about this summer are Dragonflies. My kids are
always amazed when they see a dragonfly hovering around. I cant blame
themthey are beautiful and fascinating creatures! So today Im sharing our
dragonfly craft for kids.
Heres what you need:

pipe cleaners (any color)

beads
1 pom pom
foam sheets
glitter paint

Start by painting the foam sheets. We used glitter paint, but you could just
paint on glue and then add glitter.
While the paint is drying, take a pipe cleaner and string beads onto it. This is
excellent for fine motor practice. After 3/4ths of the pipe cleaner is filled with
beads, bend the pipe cleaner on both ends to keep the beads on

Glue the wings onto the beaded pipe cleaner. I used a hot glue gun, so it
would stay on better. Then glue on a pom pom to the front end. Glue on two
beads for eyes (or you could use goggly eyes) and a small piece of pipe
cleaner for the mouth. Lastly, glue on two pipe cleaners for the antennae.
Its a very simple, kid-looking craft. We did not add the 6 legs, but you could
easily do that with black pipe cleaners.

Skittles Finger Paint Recipe

Every day my sweet boys ask what activity were going to do. Most days I
have something planned, but some days I come up short. Last week, they
asked to do an activity and so I looked in my pantry to see what I had to work
with. I saw a bag of Skittles and I was inspired to try a new recipeSkittles
Finger Paint! And let me tell you, it turned out great and it is edible and safe
for toddlers.
Heres what you need:

1/2 cup corn starch

2 cups of water
1/2 tsp. salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
bag of Skittles

Start by sorting the Skittles by color.

Next, add 1 cup of water to each bowl. Let the Skittles dissolve.
After the Skittles have dissolved, pour the one colored water into a pot. Then
add the corn starch, salt, sugar, and 1 more cup of water to the mix. Heat
over medium heat and stir frequently.
You will cook it for 10 minutes or so. When it starts to thicken, remove it from
the stove. It will look something like this. (Dont cook it for too long or it will be
too gloppy! You want it slightly runny.)
Let it cool before letting the kids play with it! Repeat the recipe to make
multiple colors.
I love that its very shiny and smells great!
You can play with it on paper, but we chose to play with it on a mirror!
messy sensory play!
We had a lot of fun playing with Skittles Finger Paint! We saved some in
containers, but I dont expect it to last very long. I will update my post when I
find out how long it lasts. Hope youll try it out!

Toilet Paper Roll Cars

What you will need;

toilet paper rolls

cardboard (not to thin, not to thick - just make sure it
can be cut easily)
drinking straws
glue, scissors
1 hole paper punch
colors

With a paper punch punch 2 holes on each end of the roll. I

first made them at the middle of the roll but soon realized
my wheels wouldn't touch the "floor" and roll this way so I
made another set of holes a bit under the centre (even if you
punch more holes it still looks great).
Have the kids color the toilet paper.
Cut drinking straws. When you thread them through the
holes there should be about an inch (2 cm-ish) of them
sticking out on each side.
Cut out the wheels out of cardboard - two circles for each
wheel. I used a color bottle cap as stencil. Punch a hole in
the centre of one circle. Insert the straw through the hole and
cut it as shown on the picture.

Before applying the glue bend the cut straw stripes. Apply
glue and cover with another cardboard circle. You have your
first wheel! Rinse and repeat until all wheels are done.
We made the car seats when all our racers were assembled
but thinking back it would be a lot easier if this was done
before wheels were added. Live and learn.
Bling up! Add car spoilers, color the wheels, add stripes,
stars...
