Have you noticed the new canopy coming off
the exit door of room D connecting to the main
walkway? What about the new landscaping
as you approach the main entrance? Staff
requested funds from the Friends and the Board
of Directors approved this request and used
donated funds for these projects. Thank you
for the donations which support many of the
Senior Center activities and enhancements to
the facilities. The Friends Board of Directors mission is to raise funds to support quality

his devotion to his second wife. Schumann, Grieg,
Richard Strauss and many others similarly honored
their spouses. We'll hear Wagner's Christmas Morning
surprise to his wife, and Mozart's "audition" aria
for his bride, hoping to win over his disapproving
father. Beethoven never wed, but that didn't stop
him from setting to music some poems pining for "a
distant beloved." In this Active Minds program, we'll
sample these musical valentines, as we learn about
the women who stirred powerful emotions of love in
these great composers.

File of Life
If you are home alone and suddenly become ill,
how would the paramedics know your specific
medical needs and whom to call for you? If you are
in a car accident and unconscious, how would the
emergency responders know about your allergies
and medical status? You can prepare yourself for
these medical emergencies by posting the File
of Life prominently on your refrigerator. First
responders are trained to look for this information
on refrigerators. Also, consider carrying the File
of Life in your car and in your wallet or purse.

Longmont Meals on Wheels (LMOW) opened its
doors in 1969 and has been located at the Longmont
Senior Center (SC) since 1987. LMOW delivers meals to
older adults and people with disabilities and served
over 94,000 meals in 2013. All meals are charged
on a sliding fee scale based upon an individuals
monthly income and ability to pay. In March 2014,
LMOW delivered its 2 millionth meal and served the
2 millionth and one meal to a lucky older adult in
the Park View caf dining room located at the Senior
Center. In addition to providing home delivered
meals to homebound persons in our community, this
onsite-prepared hot lunch is also served at the Center

over 25 years LMOW has not had to increase the cost
to older adults. However, with the increased cost of
food, an increase in the base price range for dining
room meals will go into efect January of 2015. This
slight adjustment will be a range of $1.50 - $5.00 for
older adults and $6.00 for anyone under the age of
55. LMOW is committed to ensuring that older adults
have meals that are nutritious, taste good, and at an
afordable price. If this cost increase creates a burden
for you, please be sure and visit with a LMOW staf
person to make arrangements that will work for
you. Please contact LMOW at 303-772-0540 for more

General Information
i
A Little About The Senior Citizens Advisory Board Members:
Sue Heinritz "I am nearing the end of my term on the Advisory Board. It has been
an energizing experience to be involved in city government, policy and planning for the
Center, and helping staff carry out programs. My education in occupational therapy and
work experienced enhanced my ability to contribute."
Maureen Denig "It has been my pleasure to serve since June, 2011. My husband and I
moved to Longmont in 2008. When I became "old enough", I participated in a snowshoe
event. It was a great experience to leave my office desk, where I work as a travel agent,
to experience the outdoors with a friendly group of people and experienced leaders.
Through my work on the Board, I have come to appreciate all that the Senior Center has to
offer. Working with the board members and the great staff of the Senior Center has been
very rewarding and enlightening."
Brenda Ourada "This is my third year on the Board. The citizens of Longmont can be
very proud of the services and programs offered by the Longmont Senior Center. After
being laid off from IBM, I got a master's degree in gerontology during which I interned at
the Longmont Senior Center with Veronica Garcia, Resource Specialist. I would encourage
any citizen to participate on an advisory board."
Mary Sean OHalloran "I am in my second year serving on the Board. I have learned
so much about the resources at this fabulous community resource, about Longmont city
government, and about area agencies. I am on the faculty at UNC. My work on the board
has enhanced my awareness about older adults and this has, in turn, contributed to my
work as a professor of graduate psychology and as a mental health provider. "
Emily Sciortino "This is my second year on the Board and I have learned a lot about
Longmont. I have been impressed with the inter-action Longmont has with its citizens
when making decisions for the city. After college I worked as a chemist in Chicago, then
stayed at home raised five children. I later returned to work as a secretary. When I retired,
I moved to Longmont to be near my son and his daughters."
Arlene Poplewko "I came to Longmont from New York in 1965 and was a stay home
mom until my youngest turned 10. Then I worked for various companies and agencies and
later served as a volunteer Victim Assistance Advocate and for the Salvation Army. I have
served several terms on the Senior Citizens Advisory Board. It has been a great experience
being part of the Senior Center and watching it grow. The Center offers much to our senior
population and the best thing is aging well in our city."
Juana Mendoza "This my first year on the board. It has been a nice experience to be a
member of this board. I'm very involved with my church family whom mostly are seniors. I
have the privilege to learn and understand the needs of our older adults."
