Foreword
Congratulations, and thank you for deciding on the purchase of the
SmartBalancer field balancing unit and signal analyser. With this newly
developed measuring unit, you have a reliable aid on the spot when it comes to
recording and analysing complex machine signals.
The SmartBalancer detects all forms of machine vibrations, roller bearing
conditions (optional) and process and visual inspection data, and saves this
information for evaluation, archiving and documentation.
Despite its extensive functional features, the SmartBalancer is easy to operate
and effective in use:
! High measurement accuracy and fast data recording
! Two operating modes:
Balancing for detection and correction of rotor unbalances in one or two
planes (option).
Analysis for individual measurements for machine diagnosis
! Connection of almost any sensor type
! Optionally with one or two analogue measurement channels.

! Adequate storage space (standard: 2 GB CompactFlash).
! Three LEDs (red-yellow-green) signal the exceeding of limit values; a blue

About these instructions
These instructions describe the basic functions, and the operation of the
measuring unit in the operating modes of balancing, analysis and roller bearing
analysis.

1. Safety and operating instructions
Familiarise yourself with the safety and operating instructions given in this
section before commissioning the measuring unit.
Symbols used
Warning of faulty operation which can lead to damage to the measuring unit or
the loss of data.
Information and tips on operation of the measuring unit.
Proper use
! Smartbalancer is designed for use as a portable balancing unit for the
balancing of stationary machines with only rotating components (rotors),
such as turbine rotors, inductors, circulating pumps, circulating
compressors, blowers and similar. This does not include machines with
oscillating components, such as all piston engines.
! Smartbalancer may be used without restriction for the balancing of rigid
rotors. Flexible (soft) rotors may be balanced with Smartbalancer in the
area of the resonance frequency (25%), but only by an experienced user.
The measuring unit and the accessories may only be operated by trained
personnel.
! The measuring unit may only be used for the measurement of machine
signals in the industrial area, taking into account the technical specification
(see Appendix - Technical data).
! Pick-ups and cables may only be used in the specified area defined in the
technical data sheets.
Any further form of use constitutes improper use, and is not allowed. Schenck
RoTec GmbH accepts no liability for damage caused by improper use. Faulty
or impermissible use, or failure to observe these operating instructions,
invalidates any guarantee on the part of SCHENCK RoTec GmbH.
CE conformity
SmartBalancer conforms to the EU directives for electrical operating equipment
(2006/95/EG) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) (2004/108/EG).
Safety
Users must have carefully read and understood these instructions before
working with the SmartBalancer.
! The measuring equipment (cables, holders,...) must be fitted so that they
cannot come into contact with exposed, rotating machine components
during the measurement. Danger of injury!
! The measuring units may only be operated when in an undamaged, dry and
clean condition.
! The measuring unit may only be operated by trained personnel.

! Repairs to the measuring unit must be carried out only by authorised
specialist personnel.
! Only original replacement parts and original accessories must be used.
! The electrical equipment may only be used when in a properly functioning
condition. Faults such as defective plugs or loose connections must be
rectified immediately. Damaged cables must be replaced by a specialist.
! Design changes or technical safety modifications to the measuring unit or
accessories are not allowed.
Operation
! Portable radio devices in the immediate vicinity of the measuring unit can
cause interference. Check if necessary whether the plug connections
between the pick-up and measuring unit are firmly connected.
! Expose the SmartBalancer, pick-up and cables only to the permissible
environmental influences.
! Protect the connections on the measuring unit against soiling with the aid of
the caps provided.

2.2 Keyboard
The keys can be comfortably operated with the thumb of the right hand. In a
dark environment the keyboard illumination automatically turns on.

Status display per LED
Four LED coloured LEDs indicate threshold violations, errors, and system
status and show the battery status in the device.
Flashing LEDs have the higher priority, i.e. RED flashes with signal overload
and alarm level exceeded.

2.3 Notes on operation
In order to make the operation as easy and intuitive as possible, the user
interface is designed graphically, and is based on the operating concept of
Microsoft Windows.
Switching on / off
To switch on the measuring unit, press and hold the On/Off button for two
seconds. The switch-on sequence takes about 1 minute. SmartBalancer is
ready for operation when the starting screen appears (Welcome...). To
switch off, press and hold the On/Off button for two seconds and confirm the
following enquiry on switching off with YES.
Restart (Reset):
Press and hold the On/Off button for approx. 5
seconds, until the unit switches itself off and then
back on again.
Navigation & editing
Select the screen elements with the cursor which can be moved by the
navigation keys. The selected element is highlighted. To confirm the
selection, press the 'Enter' key.
Some examples of navigation and editing are shown below:
Fields
Black frame = The field Measurement channel is selected.
Grey frame => The selection has been confirmed. The settings in the field
Measurement channel can be changed (Channel A or Channel B).
Scroll-down menu
Click on the menu in order to open it and display the entries. Click on an
entry in order to select it. If the menu contains more entries than can be
displayed, the entry "..." appears at the end of the menu. Click on this entry in
order to display the further entries.

to open a branch, press 'Enter' or the right navigation key.
To close a branch, press 'Enter' or the left navigation key.
Menu
The functions for the current screen can be found in the menu. The menu is
opened by pressing the MENU button. To close the menu, press the ESC
button.
An arrow next to a menu entry indicates a further submenu. To open it, press
the right navigation key.

2.4 Power supply, charging
The SmartBalancer is supplied with power by a lithium-ion battery.
The remaining capacity of the battery is shown by the battery symbol at the
top right of the display.
If the battery is almost empty, a message appears in the display, and the
blue LED next to the display starts flashing. You then still have a few minutes
time to complete the current measurements before changing or recharging
the battery.
The battery can be charged in the unit with the charger in a maximum of 5
hours. Observe the safety instructions provided with the charger.
Use one of the two analog input channels (A/B) as the charging socket. You
can continue to use the SmartBalancer during the charging process.
Align the charger with the markings when connecting.
You can continue to carry out measurements via the second, free channel,
although electrical interference may under certain circumstances lead to
faulty measurements!
To disconnect the charger first unlock it by pushing the plug sleeve to the
rear. Only then can you disconnect the plug from the unit. Never pull direct
on the cable itself!

The charging condition is indicated by the LEDs and the battery symbol in the
display:
Connect the SmartBalancer to the mains power supply regularly, if you are
not going to use the measuring unit for any length of time. This will avoid the
battery becoming fully discharged and the date and time setting being
deleted.
Do not continue to use damaged batteries! Do not open the battery using
force or throw it into the fire! Do not short-circuit the connection contacts!
Maximum charging temperature: 40 C. Dispose of the battery properly at the
end of its useful life.
2.5 Memory card
Card formatted, which version?
! The card is new and has not yet been formatted in a SmartBalancer: You
will be prompted to format the card.
! The card has already been used in another SmartBalancer:
Card version < Firmware version in the unit: the files on the card will be
automatically updated.
Card version > Firmware version in the unit: You will be prompted to reset
all settings to Works settings (Reset).
Card version = current firmware version: no action required.
Card fragmented?
! The data on the card is severely fragmented: An instruction will be
displayed to defragment the card.
! The data on the card is severely fragmented: A message will be displayed
that certain measurements, such as order spectra or time-signal
recording are no longer possible or will take place more slowly. In this
case, the card must be defragmented!
The formatting and the fragmentation is started in the Service menu.

2.6 Display and automatic switching-off
Over the display is a scratch-proof, transparent protective film, which can
easily be removed if required.
Since the lighting conditions affect the legibility of the display, you can set the
brightness individually. In order to maintain the battery reserve for as long as
possible, the lighting and measuring unit can be set to switch off
automatically.
Switch on the SmartBalancer.
In the starting screen, click on Unit setup.
In the next screen, click on Display.
Brightness
Press the navigation key right or left until the desired brightness is achieved.
Press Enter to accept the setting.
Switch-off time
The lighting / the unit switches itself off automatically if the unit is not used
during the set time interval (lighting: 10s ... 1m / unit: 6m ... 6h). To switch on
the display press any key.
Background image
A background image (PNG format) can be blended in to the starting screen.
Further images can be loaded into the unit with the aid of the PC programme
SmartBalancer utility.
Display battery charging
This displays the remaining capacity of the battery as a percentage.
Then press MENU, and click on OK, in order to save the changes.

conveniently in the strong and functional carrying pouch. A shoulder strap
and a hand loop ensure convenient transport and a secure grip.
Shoulder strap
Attach the strap to two diagonally opposing eyes. Adjust the length of the
strap so that the measuring units can be hung over the shoulders and
operated conveniently.
Hand loop
The hand loop can be fitted to the right or left side. For a firm and stable grip,
insert the hand through the loop.
The carrying pouch has an additional compartment on the rear side, which
can be used to hold pick-ups, cables and small components.
In order to remove the measuring unit from the carrying pouch, open the
Velcro fastener on the underside.

2.8 Interfaces
The connections for the sensor and data cables are located on the front side
of the measuring unit.
For designation and identification of the four multi-pin connections, coloured
circles are printed above the relevant sockets. The corresponding cables are
fitted with a coloured sleeve at the plug for the unit. With the aid of the
marking point on the plug sleeve and on the socket, the cable can be
connected correctly. To disconnect, first unlock it by pushing the plug sleeve
to the rear. Only then can you disconnect the plug from the unit. Never pull
direct on the cable itself!
Analogue
The two connection sockets marked with a blue circle are provided for the
measurement of analogue signals. The setting in the measuring problem
determines to which of the two channels (A or B) the sensor cable must be
connected.
The analogue channels are not galvanically separated. In 2-channel
measurements of two machines, check the potential equalisation (VDE
0100), or use electrically insulated pick-ups.
The battery can be charged in the unit via one of the two analogue
measurement channels. The SmartBalancer can be switched on or off during
the charging process.

Digital
Digital signals are recorded by the channel marked with the yellow circle
(reference pick-up or speed sensor).
The permissible range for reference pick-up signals is: -26V ... 0V (negative)
or -5V ... +26V (positive)*. The input signal must not exceed the switching
thresholds of the positive or negative range, since this could result in faulty
measurements.
Switching thresholds:
positive: max. 2.5V rising
min. 0.6V falling
negative: min. -8V rising
max. -10V falling
Temperature
The QLA socket is intended for the connection of a thermo-element (NiCrNi).
Communication
The connection marked with a green circle is used for data exchange via a
USB port for communication with a PC or printer.
2.9 Basic settings - Unit setup
Before starting to carry out measurements with the SmartBalancer, check
the basic settings in the unit and change them if necessary.
Switch the SmartBalancer on.
In the starting screen, click on Unit setup.
2.9.1 Date & time
The time and date are saved along with the measurement result.
Changing the time & date:
Click on the symbol Date & time.
Click in the field Time, and mark the hours, minutes or seconds.
Move the navigation pad upwards or downwards in order to change the
value - but without clicking! Only click to leave the field after you have set
the time.
Select the time format:
HH:mm:ss = 24 h / hh:mm:ssAP = 12 h
Set the date. Select either the German format (dd.mm.yyyy) or one of the
English formats as the date format.
Further parameters:
Time conversion: Yes (summertime) = + 1h
Time zone: Displacement in relation to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)

In order to save the settings and leave the menu, press MENU and then click

2.9.2 Pick-ups
The Pick-ups menu provides all the functions and pre-settings for the pick-
ups. Click on the symbol Pick-ups in order to open the menu. The pick-up
supplied with the standard scope of delivery is saved as the standard sensor.
For standard pick-ups, no settings need to be made. The dialogues on the
pick-ups settings are only of interest to the user if other pick-ups are being
used.
2.9.2.1 Available pick-ups in the SmartBalancer
The technically relevant measurement parameters for many pick-ups are
already saved in the SmartBalancer. When compiling a measuring problem
therefore, you need only to select the pick-up which you want to use for the
measurement.
In the menu Available pick-ups you will find a list of pick-ups, which under
certain circumstances may be very comprehensive.
Since you will probably not use all the pick-ups already saved in the
SmartBalancer, you can reduce the selection to the pick-ups available to you.
When setting up the measuring problems, the SmartBalancer then displays
as standard only the already marked pick-ups:
Click on the relevant pick-ups in the list, so that these are marked with a
tick.

2.9.2.2 Sensor detection and hardware response
In this menu, the sensor detection and response of the amplifier stages in
the SmartBalancer can be switched on or off.
The response of the amplifier stages can only be activated if the sensor
detection is switched off. The settings in this menu apply for the operating
modes Analysis and Machine templates. After switching on the unit, the
amplifiers always respond before the first measurement.
2.9.2.3 Sensor check
Here you can manually check the measurement path to the sensor. In the
case of ICP sensors, use the menu ICP Sensor Check, and for all other
sensors, the menu Sensor Check.
Select the channel to which the sensor is connected (A, B).
Click on START.
The SmartBalancer then checks the measurement path and displays the
result (LineDrive, open line, short-circuit, etc.).
2.9.2.4 Standard sensor
For all vibration measurements in the operating mode Analysis, a sensor
can be set which will be used as standard for the measurement.
Activate the control box, and select the required sensor. Only vibration
acceleration sensors are available for selection.
If a standard sensor is set up, no other pick-up can be set in the measuring
problem manager. The corresponding field is deactivated (shown in grey),
although the originally set pick-up is still displayed.

2.9.3 Language
The SmartBalancer is equipped with 11 dialogue languages. In the delivery
condition, the dialogue language is set to English. In order to change the
language to German, proceed as follows:
Click on the symbol Language.
Click on German.
Press the MENU button, and click on OK.
Confirm the message to restart the unit.
2.9.4 Units
In the works, the units - where applicable - are set to SI units. In order to
change the units of a parameter, proceed as follows:
Click on the symbol Units.
Open the corresponding menu and select the new unit.
In the lower area of the window, the accuracy of the current unit in decimal
places is displayed, together with its conversion factor into the corresponding
SI unit.
In order to save the changes, press the MENU button, and click on Save.
2.9.5 Keyphaser
Here you can extend the time limit set for rpm measurements and phase
measurement to enable measurements on very low-speed machines (range:
10 ... 30 s, default: 10s). The 'Active edge' option is used to define whether
the edge of the incoming trigger mark or outgoing trigger mark on the shaft is
to be used as the reference signal.

2.9.6 Keyboard
For some buttons on the SmartBalancer, additional functions are activated
as standard, which facilitate working on the machine or increase data
security.
Click on the symbol Keyboard.
In the following screen, the following options can be activated or deactivated.
Additional button on the rear side of the unit
An additional button is located on the rear side of the unit, which is operated
with the index finger of the left hand. This button can be assigned one of the
following functions:
! Entry button (ENTER)
! Start measurement
This button is particularly helpful if enter cannot be pressed with the right
thumb - for example if a mobile measurement probe has to be held against
the machine with the right hand.
Save? enquiry after ESC
If this option is activated, the enquiry Save? appears after pressing the ESC
button, without having saved the changes / measurement results in the
current screen.
Enquiry in case of repeat measurement
A repeat measurement is started automatically if enter is pressed in the
measurement screen. In order to prevent the unintentional start of a repeat
measurement, this can be used to show a corresponding enquiry in the
measurement screen.
In order to save the changes, press the MENU button, and click on OK.

2.10 Service menu
The functions and settings for service, maintenance and training are found in
this menu.
Click on the symbol Service in order to open the Service menu.

Offset compensation
Different factors such as ageing or temperature cause a drift in the analogue
electronics. In this case, you have the facility of maintaining the
measurement accuracy of the unit by regularly calibrating the offset
(approximately every 2 months).
Click on the symbol Offset compensation.
Click on Start. This process takes about 3 minutes.
Restoring the works settings
In this menu, you have the facility of resetting various parameters in the unit
to the works settings. You can also delete data in the unit which is no longer
required, such as measurement results (analysis), languages...
Click on the symbol Reset.
Danger of data loss! Make sure once again which setting will be reset, or
which data will be deleted. This action is irreversible!
Click in the tree view on the relevant entry, and then confirm the following
enquiry by pressing OK. For safety reasons, you must again enter the
word OK in the Text Editor, before the action is carried out.

LogLevel
In order to simplify fault-finding, the operating steps in the unit can be
documented in the form of a file (LogFile). Here it can be specified how
much data can be written to the LogFile.
Click on the symbol LogLevel, and select an option
NONE: No reporting
STANDARD: Only the important operating steps will be reported
(standard setting)
RUNTIME / ... / SPECIAL APPLICATION: The volume of the reported
information will be increased from step to step.
The higher the LogLevel is set, the greater will be the requirement on the
system resources (processor / memory). The LogLevel should therefore only
be increased following consultation with SCHENCK RoTec GmbH.
2.11 Memory card (CF)
In this menu, you can format, check and repair the memory card.
FORMATTING: You should only format a card if it is new and has not yet
been used in SmartBalancer. This process deletes are data stored on the
card!
To format it, click on 'Start' in the top field, confirm the query that is displayed
and enter the word 'OK' into the text editor.
CHECKING: The degree of fragmentation is checked automatically at
specific intervals. Here you can start the check function manually by clicking
on the 'Start' button.
REPAIRING: If the file system on the memory card is faulty, an error
message appears. If possible, save the measurement data on the PC before
starting the repair function.

2.12 Printer
With the SmartBalancer, you can output measurement results and reports
direct to a printer. All printouts can also be saved as PDF-files and
transferred to a PC. In order to activate the print function, the Linux printer
drivers must first be loaded into the measuring unit, in order to make the
necessary settings.
The printer drivers are already available for some printers from HP and
Epson with a USB port.
Further details on the operation of this programme can be found in the
Appendix.
Click on the symbol Printer in order to open the Printer menu.
2.12.1 Printer setup
In order to set up a new printer, proceed as follows:
Click on the symbol Printer to open the menu Printer settings.
Mark the uppermost menu, press the MENU button, and click on New.
A tree view of the available printer drivers is displayed.
Open the corresponding folder, and select the required printer driver.
Enter a name in the Text Editor.
Then set the printer parameters:
Resolution, paper format and the paper source.
Printer loop
Print jobs which have not yet been printed out and are being processed in the
SmartBalancer can be viewed in the printer loop and deleted if required. To
do this, mark the print job in the list, press the MENU button, and click on
Delete job.

When a print job is being processed, a print symbol appears at the upper
edge of the screen.

2.13 Data transfer
Data transfer takes place via the USB connection. The following data can be
transferred:
Measurement data to the PC (analysis, machine templates)
Software update to the unit
Printer drivers to the unit
Data back-up to the PC
Data restoration to the unit
PDF and screen files to the PC
The data is exchanged via the auxiliary programme SmartBalancer utility,
which is located on the SCHENCK RoTec Condition Monitoring CD and must
be installed locally on the PC.
2.13.1 USB
The USB cable is used to connect the SmartBalancer to a USB port on the
PC. The USB cable is provided for the connection to a printer with a USB
port. On the unit side, the cable is connected to the socket marked with a
green circle.
2.13.2 Update
The update is in a PTZ-file. The update file is loaded into the unit via USB.
The charger unit must be connected before an update. Otherwise the update
process will not start.
Start the update tool on the PC.
Set the communication (Communication type) to USB.
Click on [Continue].
Select the update file on the PC.
The file name contains the version number and the extension ptz.
Click on [Continue]:
Click on [Download] to load the data into the SmartBalancer.
On completion of the data transfer, click on [Close] in order to exit the
programme.
The unit switches itself on and off repeatedly until the update is completed.
This process usually takes a few minutes. Wait until the SmartBalancer
starting screen appears.
The current version number is displayed at the bottom of the starting screen.

3. Measurement
The SmartBalancer can be used in the following operating modes for the
measurement of signals and the recording of machine condition data.

Before starting a measurement, ensure that
the battery is charged.
the unit settings are correct (date, etc.).
the required measuring problems are set up in the unit.
the required pick-ups and cables are ready and in proper operating
condition; in the case of speed measurements, you may need a stand
for the speed sensor!
the fixed installed measurement points are in order; carry out a visual
inspection; if necessary, clean and rectify any damage.
a countersink is fitted at the measurement points for manual probes.
3.1 Balancing
The balancing module is based on the well-known influence coefficient
method and is characterised by its efficiency and great operating
convenience. The measurement process used has been optimised by a new,
knowledge-based algorithm. The perfectly matched measurement settings
save you time-consuming preparations and automate recurring process
steps. Easy operation is ensured by intuitive, graphic user guidance, which
leads you step-by-step through the balancing procedure. Various methods
for correction of a rotor unbalance are available for selection: free correction,
fixed weight, fixed locations or measuring tape correction. If required, the
Smartbalancer will combine all fitted weights into a new, single weight. If you
cannot fit any balancing weight to the rotor, the Smartbalancer can calculate
for you the weight which must be removed from the rotor.
3.1.1 Safety during balancing
The safety instructions in the operating instructions and the following safety
instructions on balancing must be read carefully and understood before
starting to use the measuring unit.
Check the rotor for damage before balancing and repair or replace any
damaged components.
Remove any material adhesions and loose parts. The applicable safety
regulations must be observed when carrying out measurements on
machines.
When arranging the measurement components, ensure that there are no
holders, cables etc. projecting into the vicinity of rotating machine parts.
When fitting the balancing weights, the corresponding instructions of the
manufacturer must be observed.
In the case of welded-on balancing weights, care must be taken to ensure
that the attachment points are clean; the earth electrode of the welding
machine must be connected to the rotor, and not to the machine.
In the case of screw-fitted balancing weights, the maximum permissible
speed of the rotor must be observed.

When working on the rotor, the machine must be switched off and
secured against switching on again in accordance with the applicable
regulations.
Before the first measurement (initial unbalance), it must be ensured that
the preparations have been carried out properly and completely. In
addition to the arrangement of the measurement components, care must
be taken to ensure that the parameters have been entered correctly in the
machine setup. An incorrectly entered rotor mass will result in the
calculation of too large a trial weight. The consequences for the operator
and the machine may be serious!
During the trial and correction runs, no persons must remain in the radial
area of the rotor. This area must be properly secured against
unauthorised entry. If the trial weight becomes detached from the rotor
when the machine is running, this can result in fatal danger in this area!
If the rotor is accommodated in a protective housing, any hatches or
openings in the housing must be closed before starting the machine.
The permissible starting frequency of the machine must not be exceeded.
Otherwise the motor may be damaged.
3.1.2 Balancing process
Increased vibrations to machines are undesirable occurrences. They impair
the quality of the products, place additional stress on the components and
ultimately reduce operating safety. The most frequent cause of these
vibrations is the unbalance. The resulting high centrifugal forces lead to
premature wear of machine components such as bearings and seals. The
objective of balancing rotors is therefore to restrict bearing forces and shaft
deformations to acceptable levels.
With Smartbalancer you can reliably detect an unbalance and quickly correct
it. Your balancing results will be automatically compared with the assessment
standards for the balance condition of rotating, rigid bodies of DIN ISO 1940.
3.1.3 Unbalance
If a rotor is correctly balanced, and if the rotor is placed in roller mountings,
the rotor will not turn. If an additional mass is applied, this will immediately
turn the rotor until it rests at the bottom. This procedure is referred to as
rolling. If the additional mass is applied in the plane of the centre of gravity,
this will result in a purely static unbalance.
If this rotor is now rotated at the balancing speed, this creates a centrifugal
force perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
If two equal unbalances are applied to a fully balanced rotor so that they are
directly opposite each other in two separate radial planes, this is referred to
as a couple unbalance (or dynamic unbalance). This unbalance cannot be
established with the aid of roller mountings, since the centre of gravity
remains on the rotational axis. When the rotor turns, the unbalances cause a
moment due to centrifugal force, which generates equal but opposing forces
in the bearings. Such unbalances can only be detected and corrected
dynamically by means of two-plane balancing.
If a single unbalance is applied to a fully balanced rotor in one plane, which
does not contain the centre of gravity, this is referred to as quasi-static
unbalance. This corresponds to a combination of a static unbalance and a
couple unbalance, and is usually corrected by means of a correction in two
planes.

The decision as to whether a rotor should be balanced in one or two planes
depends essentially on how many correction planes there are available and
the separating distance between them.

3.1.4 Balancing on machines with rotating masses
The balancing module is based on the well-known influence coefficient
method:
The Smartbalancer first measures the vibration amplitude and phase angle
of the vibration caused by the unbalance. A defined test weight is then
attached, and the amplitude and phase measured once again.
Smartbalancer then calculates the influence coefficient from the difference of
both vibrations and the exact location and amount of the test weight. The
unbalance of the rotor is then calculated with the aid of this influence
coefficient.
In two-plane balancing, the influence of the mass in the other plane is taken
into account in the calculation. All so-called rigid rotors can be balanced
using this balancing method.
Rotors which are operated outside the speed range in which they behave
rigidly are not the subject of these operating instructions. For the balancing of
these rotors, further skills and knowledge are necessary, which can be
acquired in a seminar by Schenck RoTec.

3.1.5 Analysis of the rotor before balancing
Before beginning the balancing, you should first ensure that the cause of the
reduced running smoothness of the rotor is actually an unbalance. A
vibration diagnosis will also show which balancing method is the most
suitable.
A range of co-ordinated measuring problems are available for the diagnosis
of an unbalance:

Detection of the wideband vibration of the machine for documentation of the
actual condition before and after balancing. This also identifies the
measurement point with the highest vibration level, which is where the
sensors should be fitted.
Speed
Measurement of the rotor speed.
Phase measurement - one / two planes
Registration of the amplitude and phase angle of the speed-synchronous
vibration signal. This can be used for example to determine the type of the
unbalance (static / dynamic).
Vibration speed - Spectrum & time signal
Measurement of the FFT spectrum and time signal. If the spectrum is
dominated by the 1

harmonic, the most probable cause for the poor running
smoothness is an unbalance.

3.1.6 Preparation for balancing
Before starting any work on the machine, it must be switched off and secured
against unintentional switching on! The preparations include the arrangement
of the measuring components.
3.1.6.1 Arrangement

First try to establish the cause of the vibrations by visual inspection, and
rectify this if possible. Example: Remove any material adhering to the
rotor, or tighten any loose bolts in the foundation.
If the machine is not to be balanced on-site in the installed condition, it must
be firmly attached to a rigid foundation (direct to the frame or to vibration
insulators).
Determine the measurement and correction plane. Mount the vibration
pick-up on the bearing housing at the measurement point with the highest
vibration levels. Note the following:
The measurement plane should be in the centre of the bearing or close to
the correction plane (e.g. rotor side, rotor).
Vibrations are transmitted via the outer race of a bearing in the radial
direction. The pick-up should therefore be attached at the side (horizontal)
or at the top of the bearing (vertical). Suitable measurement points can be
found by using the test probe to identify the point with the highest vibration
levels.
The pick-ups should be attached as close as possible to the bearing. Avoid
attenuation of the signal due to excessively long transmission paths, bearing
covers etc. The measurement direction must correspond to the main
vibration direction (usually horizontal). In the case of a horizontal
measurement direction, attach the pick-up on the lower half of the bearing
housing.
Wherever possible, use pick-ups which can be screwed to the machine,
or attach the pick-up using a magnetic adapter. The pick-up must not be
attached to components with natural vibrations, such as covers.
Test probes are not suitable for balancing!
For dynamic balancing in two planes: Determine the second plane (B) in
the same way.
Assess the running smoothness of the machine.
Measure the vibration speed, and in the event of excessive vibration
levels, record an FFT spectrum (see DIN ISO 10816-3).
For example, if the speed is 1,500 rpm and high vibration amplitudes
occur in the spectrum at 25 Hz (1
st
harmonic), these are referred to as
rotational frequency vibrations, which indicate an unbalance.
Save the measurement values in order to compare them later with the
measurement values after balancing.
Apply an angle reference mark to the shaft for the reference pick-up. Use
reflection film as the reference mark.
Angle convention: The angle reference mark defines the position 0; the
fitting angle for the correction weights is counted opposite to the direction
of rotation of the shaft.
Tip: In the case of fans, number the blades in accordance with the
counting direction of the fitting angle. Blade No. 1 is at the 0position.
Fit the reference pick-up with the reference pick-up stand to the machine
when switched off in accordance with the following illustration. Note the
following:
Fit the reference pick-up at a distance of 2 to 50 cm from the shaft
surface. Keep the span length of the stand short, in order to attach the
sensor with the lowest possible vibration level.
Ensure that the reference pick-up optic is perpendicular to the shaft
surface (note the arrow direction on the sensor head!).
In order not to interfere with the reference pick-up signal, avoid
reflections or other interference with the reference pick-up optic. In

case of bright, glossy shafts, fit the reference pick-up at a slight angle
(approx. 15) to the shaft surface.
Connect the vibration pick-up and the reference pick-up to the measuring

On completion of the preparations:
! The balancing speed should be as low as possible. The higher the
balancing speed, the higher the danger posed by test weights flying off
etc.
! Look out for any possible resonance points, and in case of doubt examine
the coast-down curve!
! The speed must remain constant during the measurement! Otherwise the
balancing run must be started again.
! The rotor must be at operating temperature during the measurement (e.g.
if the rotor normally operates in a hot air flow).
! Before starting the first balancing run, check the correct installation of all
measurement components once again.
! Check the set parameters.
3.1.7 Operation

If you are not yet familiar with the operation in the balancing mode, note the
following instructions:
3.1.7.1 Settings
All settings necessary for the measurement and assessment of a balancing
run are made in setup menus. The individual setups (measurement, pick-up,
machine, ...) are combined into a measuring problem. The measuring
problems for balancing are therefore built up in the same way as the
measuring problems in the operating mode Analysis.
Parameters which you can change during balancing are summarised in the
MENU under the option Tools:
! Correction mode: free correction / fixed locations / fixed weights / tape
measure
! Fit balancing weights, i.e. weld or screw weights to the rotor.
! Remove balancing weights, i.e. mill weight from the rotor
! Test functions: activate / deactivate speed, stability of the unbalance
indicator, etc.
3.1.7.2 Display
In every balancing run, two main screens are displayed:
The data screen shows the balancing weights and their position on the rotor.
The screen also shows the measurement data and balancing weights of all
completed runs. If a machine setup has been set up, it shows the balancing
quality achieved and the resulting centrifugal force at the rotor.
In the measurement screen, the measurement values (amplitude & phase
angle) are displayed numerically and graphically in a polar diagram.
In both screens, the relevant balancing step is shown at the top left:

the tolerance range, the rotor is balanced. Otherwise balancing
weights must be fitted to the rotor in accordance with the following
balancing steps.

the influence of the fitted test weight is measured, and the required
correction weight calculated.

Correction runs to reduce the unbalance of the rotor.
Zoom with +/-
The initial unbalance is designated by A or B as the starting point of the
balancing procedure. All following measurements are connected to each
other by a line. In order to enlarge the view, press the + button repeatedly.
The Smartbalancer automatically scales the display area with regard to the
last two balancing runs. If the initial unbalance moves out of the display area,
the maximum range will also be specified as a percentage of the initial
unbalance.
3.1.7.3 Navigation
To scroll forwards and backwards, press the right or the left navigation key
respectively.
Start / stop measurement
Press the Enter key in the measurement screen.

If you want to determine the unbalance of a rotor for a second time:
If the measurement runs were saved the first time, you can use the influence
coefficients obtained during these runs.
Select the saved rotor data in the file manager and click on [Return].
Or
Select the bearing case in the Balancing menu.
Press [Menu]
Click on [Load file] and select the rotor name.
Click on [Return] and select [Restart].
! A message appears:
A restart deletes all previous balancing steps and retains only the
influence coefficients. Do you really want to restart?
Confirmed by pressing OK and start with the initial unbalance run.
You can also save the influence coefficients under a name in the MENU
[Tool] [Save coefficients].
You measure the unbalance with the available influence coefficients.
End the measurement run by pressing [Pause] and go to the next page by
pressing [Continue].
Load the influence coefficients for this rotor by selecting [MENU] [Tool]-
>[Load coefficient] and confirm by selecting [MENU] [OK].
! The SmartBalancer immediately displays the unbalance for one or both
planes.
Fit the displayed correction weights.
Carry out a check run. If the rotor is not yet in tolerance, a further
correction suggestion will be made.
3.1.9 Balancing in one plane
The next section describes the procedure for balancing in one plane. This is
done without a machine setup; the standard setting under the MENU item
Tools is:
! Correction mode: free
! Fit balancing weights
! Test functions all active, except coefficient calculation inactive.
3.1.9.1 Activating the balancing mode
Switch the Smartbalancer on, and wait until the starting screen appears
(20-30 seconds).
Click on the screen symbol Balance.
Open the tab 1 plane.
Click on the rotor graphic corresponding to the rotor type, after checking
and if necessary changing the current measuring problem (F button or
MENU - Measuring problem manager)

Start initial unbalance run
Before you can load a saved measurement, you must first select the rotor
type. Only then can you open the required file by selecting MENU - [Load file].
3.1.9.2 Measuring the initial unbalance
Switch the machine on. Wait until the machine has reached the balancing
speed and if applicable the operating temperature.
Press 'Enter' to start the measurement.
The Smartbalancer first registers the speed. The green LED flashes on every
reference pick-up pulse. If the speed fluctuates too much, a warning is
displayed, which you can acknowledge by pressing enter.
The unit then measures the amplitude and phase of the speed-harmonic
vibration. If the values are unstable, the number of values used for averaging
will be increased automatically.
In the case of stable measurement values, press enter in order to stop the
measurement values.
Press enter again in order to repeat the measurement.
Switch the machine off.
3.1.9.3 Test run
Press the right navigation key to open the data screen for the trial run.
Enter the weight and fitting angle for the test weight
G Click on the weight or angle field under the rotor graphic.
The active field is highlighted in black. If none of the fields can be
marked, press the F button.
G Enter the relevant value in the Numbers Editor and accept the entry by
selecting MENU - OK.

Measurement of the initial unbalance Weight and angle for the test run
In case of stable measurement values, press enter in order to stop the
measurement.
Switch the machine off.
In the test run, the unbalance should change sufficiently. If the unbalance
only changes slightly, you must increase the test weight. If the unbalance has
more than doubled, you must use a smaller test weight (see Tools
Parameter Check unfavourable influence). If necessary, page back to the
data screen of the test run, change the weight accordingly, and repeat the
test run.
3.1.9.4 Correction run
Press the right navigation key in order to close the measurement screen
of the test run and open the data screen of the first correction run.
Depending on whether the test weight has resulted in an improvement or
not, you can leave it on the rotor or remove it. Answer the following
enquiry displayed on the screen accordingly.
Fit the suggested weight at the specified position on the rotor. The values
can also be changed if required.
Press the right navigation key until the next measurement screen
appears.
Switch the machine on.
Press 'Enter' to start the measurement.
In case of stable measurement values, press enter in order to stop the
measurement.

In the correction runs, the Smartbalancer checks whether the unbalance has
been reduced sufficiently from one run to the next. If this is not the case, the
following message is displayed: No improvement. The corresponding run
must be repeated with a different balancing weight.
A restart is recommended if the vibration values deteriorate, and at the same
time the correction weights are not reduced significantly.
Move the navigation pad to the right, and continue the balancing with the
next correction run.
Before every further correction run, you must specify whether you will
leave the balancing weight used on the rotor or remove it.
The balancing is completed as soon as the vibration values have reached an
acceptable level. If you are working with Machine setup, the calculated
balancing quality is the completion criterion. A Smiley symbol appears in
the data screen of the next correction run if the balancing quality has reached
the tolerance range.

3.1.9.5 Undoing balancing runs
If the measurement results worsen after a trim run, you can return to a run
that was acceptable and continue balancing with different weights from there.
Navigate to the data screen of the trim run at which you wish to continue
the procedure.
Press the MENU button and click on 'Undo'.
Confirm the next query with 'Yes'. All subsequent trim runs are deleted.
Remove the balancing weights that you attached during the deleted trim
runs.
3.1.9.6 Save result
In the data screen, press the MENU button.
Click on Save, in order to open the file manager.
Click again onSave, and enter the name in the Text Editor.
Then press the MENU button in the Text Editor, and click on OK in order
to save the result.

In the data screen of the correction run, enter the balancing weights for both
planes. Press the right navigation key, in order to mark the entry fields in
sequence.
Continue the correction run until the residual unbalance is within the
tolerance range.

3.1.10.5 Evaluation of the data
In the data screen, the following data is listed for every completed balancing
run:
! Weight of the balancing weight
! Fitting angle
! Effective value of the vibration level
! Phase angle
If you are working with a machine setup, the balancing quality achieved and
the centrifugal force on the rotor will also be calculated. If the balancing
quality is within the tolerance range, the Smiley appears, indicating the end
of the balancing procedure.
Data View
If you would like to evaluate the completed runs in detail, or combine
individual balance weights into one weight, open the Detailed data view:
Press the MENU button in the data screen, and click on Data:
In addition to the individual balancing runs, the data field lists the following
information:
! Machine name: Machine setup, if used
! Date & time of the last balancing run
! Speed set in the machine setup
! Balancing quality after the last balancing run
! Residual unbalance after the last balancing run
You can select the individual balancing runs in the list. The marked run is
highlighted in black in the polar diagram. The view of the polar diagram can
be zoomed in and out by pressing the +/- button. An asterisk (*) in the list
marks those balancing runs in which the fitted balancing weight was removed
again after the measurement of the rotor (e.g. test run with weight in plane B:
(1BB), see illustration below).

3.1.11 Combining balancing weights
If you have already fitted several balancing weights to the rotor, you can
combine these into one single weight. The Smartbalancer adds together the
weights of the completed balancing runs vectorially and displays the resulting
weight and the fitting angle in the data screen and the detail view.
Press the MENU button in the detail data view.
Click on Combine:
The newly calculated balancing weight appears in the list in the line for the
next correction run. This run is marked with a total symbol (3).
Then press the MENU button, and click on OK, in order to accept the
combination of the balancing weights.
Before continuing with the next correction run, remove the already fitted
weights, and fit the newly calculated balancing weight to the rotor.

3.1.12 Options when balancing
During the test run and the correction runs, the following options are
available:
3.1.12.1 Check measurement setting
Press the MENU button, and click on Measuring problem manager.
Mark the corresponding setup, press the MENU button, and click on
Display, in order to display the set parameters.
3.1.12.2 Changing the correction mode (MENU - Tools)
The correction mode refers to the method by which the balancing weight is
fitted to the rotor. The standard setting for the correction mode is Free & fit,
i.e. the weight can be of any mass, and can be fitted at any angular position.
Press the MENU button in the data screen, and click on Tools:
The following correction modes are available for selection:
! Fixed location
! Fixed weight
! Tape measure
Fixed location
If you can only fit the balancing weight to the rotor at certain positions (e.g.
on the blades of a fan), select the correction mode Fixed location. Then
enter the Number of locations on the rotor. The Smartbalancer calculates
two weights in the balancing runs which must be fitted at two of the specified
positions. Position or blade #1 corresponds to the 0position, and should be
set up as the reference mark for the reference pick-up.
Fixed weight (spreading of fixed weights)
Activate the option Fixed weight, if you only have weights of certain masses
(e.g. 2g, 5g, 10g) available for balancing. Then enter the mass of the Fixed
weight. The Smartbalancer then calculates two angle positions at which two
equal weights must be fitted.
The option Fit balancing weight must be set.
The fixed weight must be at least and at most 3 times as heavy as the
balancing weight suggested in the Free mode.

Tape measure
In this correction mode, you can determine the position of the balancing
weights with the tape measure, without having to fit a reference system with
angular division.
Specify the outer diameter of the rotor in plane A and plane B. The distance
on the rotor surface is calculated from the reference pick-up mark (0
position) in millimetres and counted against the direction of rotation. You
must therefore place a tape measure around the rotor and fit the balancing
weight at the specified length.
The distance of the balancing weights from the axis of rotation is the
correction radius. This is as a rule smaller than the outer radius.
In all three correction modes, you can subsequently change the calculated
specifications, although the changes should not differ too greatly from the
specifications.
The list in the Data field always displays the correction weights for the free
correction mode.
3.1.12.3 Remove balancing weight
If you do not attach the balancing weights to the rotor by clamping, welding,
screwing etc., you can also correct the unbalance by grinding off some of the
rotor material. To do this, set the option Balancing weight ->remove in the
Tools menu (see below). The Smartbalancer then re-calculates the
balancing weights as negative masses.
3.1.12.4 Test functions
In order to ensure that the balancing procedure produces reliable and
assessable results, the Smartbalancer is equipped with the following test
functions in the Tools menu:
! Check speed:
Before every measurement, the Smartbalancer checks whether the
measured speed is stable. If the speed fluctuates too greatly, a
corresponding error message will be displayed.
! Check unfavourable influence:

The change of the unbalance indicator is checked; if the change is too
large or too small, a corresponding message will be displayed. You must
then go back to the preceding balancing run and reduce or increase the
weight fitted.
! Re-calculate coefficient:
The coefficient used for the calculation of the correction weight can be
taken from the test run (setting: No) or from the preceding correction run
(setting: Yes).
! Check stability:
During the measurement, the stability of the unbalance indicator is
checked. If the fluctuations are too great, the Smartbalancer increases
the number of values used for averaging automatically. If the maximum
number of averaging values is reached, a corresponding message is
displayed.
3.1.13 Balancing with machine setup
A machine setup should be carried out if the Smartbalancer is to suggest a
test weight before the test run, or if you would like to have the residual
unbalance and the balancing quality calculated after every run. This setup
contains the machine data necessary for the calculation and information on
the layout of the measuring arrangement.
Mark a rotor type in the selection screen.
Press the MENU button, and click on Measuring problem manager.
Mark the field Machine setup.

3.1.13.1 Parameters in the machine setup
Planes 1 / 2.
Number of correction planes; cannot be changed, since the selection of
the rotor type is made in the selection screen.
Correction mode free / fixed location / fixed weight / tape measure
takes into account restrictions on the machine (e.g. fixed location for fan
blades) or local circumstances (tape measure. The correction mode can
be changed in any balancing run in the Tools menu. Depending on the
selection, the following parameters must be set:
Number of locations: 3-100. As a rule the number of fan blades.
Fixed weight: Mass of the available balancing weight.
Outer diameter:
With the tape measure, you can determine the position of the balancing
weights on the rotor without an angle reference.
Fit / remove balancing weight;
The Smartbalancer calculates how much mass has to be fitted to the rotor
or ground off (Negative mass). This parameter can be changed in every
balancing run (MENU - Tools).
Balancing quality
Assessment of the residual unbalance with the aid of quality levels to DIN
ISO 1940. If the calculated balancing quality is lower than the set value,
the Smiley appears in the data screen, and the balancing is completed.
Select the value 0 if you would like to work without an assessment of the
residual unbalance.
Foundation flexible / rigid;
The balancing weights are smaller for a flexible foundation than for a rigid
foundation.
Radius
Balancing radius; Distance of the balancing weight from the axis of
rotation; the larger the balancing radius, the smaller is the balancing
weight at the same speed.
Rotor mass
The mass of the rotor is taken into account in the calculation of the test
weights.
Reference pick-up angle (2)
Angle between the pick-up (3) and the reference pick-up (1); the
reference pick-up angle (2) is taken into account in the calculation of the
test weight, and is counted against the direction of rotation of the rotor.

Balancing speed; this should be as close as possible to the operating
speed. When balancing using the speed setup entered in the works, only
one reference pick-up pulse is processed per revolution. You should
therefore ensure that only one reference pick-up mark is applied to the

3.1.14 Parameters in the measurement setup
If you create a new measurement setup, you can set the following
parameters:
Filter
2Hz / 10 Hz; set 10 Hz as the lower frequency if the machine speed is
above 600 rpm, and th machine is located on a flexible foundation.
Averaging
1 - 20; in case of a highly fluctuating unbalance indicator, the averaging
number is automatically increased up to the maximum value.
Order
1 - 5; order filters enable balancing at speed harmonics of a higher order;
these special cases can occur in the case of special machine
arrangements.
3.1.15 Entering the balancing radius and rotor mass later
You can enter the balancing radius and the rotor mass later in the Tools
menu to have the achieved balancing quality and the centrifugal force
calculated. In this way, these values will be available to you if you start the
balancing procedure without the machine setup.
Optionally, you can enter different balancing radii for the trial run and the
balancing runs. To do so, activate the 'Use different radii' option.

3.2 Analysis
3.2.1 What is a measuring problem in the Analysis mode?
In order to perform a measurement, the SmartBalancer needs information on
the measurement parameter, the pick-up used and possibly also
specifications on the assessment of the result. It also requires information on
whether the speech should also be registered simultaneously with each
measurement. This data record is referred to as a measuring problem and
forms the basis for every measurement with the SmartBalancer.
In order to simplify the preparations for a measurement in the Analysis
operating mode, and to save you having to enter the required data, the
SmartBalancer provides a range of pre-defined, knowledge-based measuring
problems. With these measuring problems, you can simply change the pick-
up and then reset the measurement channel. If further changes to the
measuring parameters are required, create a new measuring problem.
An overview of the arrangement of a measuring problem in the
SmartBalancer is given below:

For a better overview, the measuring problems are sorted according to
measurement parameter and allocated to a corresponding symbol. For
example, in the Analysis operating mode, all measuring problems of the
measurement parameter Vibration speed - characteristic value can be found
under the above symbol. The letters a, v, and d in the symbol stand for
acceleration, speed (velocity) and distance.
Measurement - Analysis - Diagnosis
In order to activate the Analysis operating mode, click in the starting screen
on [Analysis] in order to open the selection screen of the measuring
problems. The measuring problem for the marked symbol is displayed in the
lower half of the screen (Info field).
The measuring problems are grouped under three tabs: Characteristic
values, Signals, Special (measurements). Certain measuring problems only
appear if the corresponding module is registered.
The current tab is marked by a black frame. In order to change the tab, press
the + or button, or use the navigation pad.

This section describes how to perform a measurement after all the
preparations have been carried out. The measurement procedure is
illustrated schematically below.
The settings to be made before, during and after a measurement are

If the sensor detection is activated in the device, the SmartBalancer checks
before every measurement whether the pick-up and cable are correctly
connected. In case of measurements with a reference pick-up (phase,
orbit,...) The reference pick-up signal is monitored (the green LED flashes at
every pulse). If the reference pick-up signal fails during the measurement,
the yellow LED flashes. The measurement must then be repeated.
3.2.3 Continual measurement (live mode)
If the measurement mode is set to continual measurement, the
SmartBalancer first shows the measurement values or signals as they are
recorded live - i.e. without calculating an average value. In this way, you can
check the signal and the stability of the measurement. The actual
measurement only starts when you press enter again. The live mode is only
available for characteristic value measurements, spectra and time signals,
but not for 1+1 measurements.

screen. In the live mode, 0% progress is displayed.
3.2.4 Save result
On completion of a measurement, the blue LED lights up if no measurement
error occurred or the limit value was exceeded.
To save the result, press the MENU button, and click on Save. The File

Setting up a new measuring problem
Previously set up measuring problems facilitate work in the field, since they
can be called up immediately in the unit, thereby reducing the preparation
time for the measurement. The SmartBalancer is therefore already equipped
with a wide selection of frequently used measuring problems*, which can be
supplemented if necessary by user-defined measuring problems.
Pre-set measuring problems / setups are designated by a lock symbol, and
therefore cannot be edited (except for the pick-up and channel).
In order to set up a new measuring problem, proceed as follows:
Mark the measuring problems symbol in the selection screen.
Press the MENU button, and click on Measuring problem manager. The
measuring problem manager appears. This is where you compile the new
measuring problem.
Mark the drop-down menu Measuring problem.
Press the MENU button, and click on New. The Text Editor appears.
Enter a name for the new measuring problem. Change the measurement
channel if necessary.
Select the setups for measurement, pick-up, assessment or speed in the
lower half of the screen. If you cannot find any suitable setup, you will
have to create a new setup.
The pick-up setup initially displays only the available pick-ups. In order to
display all pick-ups, click on the last list entry ...further pick-ups.
To save the measuring problem, press the MENU button, and click on
OK.

3.2.6 Create new setup
(Setup for measurement / pick-ups / assessment / speed)
Setups can only be created for user-defined measuring problems.
Viewing the setup parameters:

SCANNING FREQUENCY (TIME SIGNAL RECORDER)
The scanning frequency for the time signal determines the maximum,
upper frequency.
MEASUREMENT TIME
Duration of an individual measurement; this depends on the lower
frequency, and therefore cannot be changed. For the time signal
recorder, the measurement time can be set within the range 1 - 3600
seconds.
LOWER / UPPER FREQUENCY
Frequency range of the vibration measurement
AVERAGING METHOD / NUMBER OF MEASUREMENTS
None: Every individual measurement will be displayed.
Linear averaging: Individual measurements will be added and divided by
the averaging number.
Exponential averaging: The measurements will be averaged
exponentially. The last individual measurements will be more heavily
weighted.
Peak-hold: The highest measurement value will be displayed.
OVERLAP
Overlap over the consecutive measurements; for an overlap of 0%, the
complete measurement time is: Averaging number x measurement time;
a higher overlap reduces the complete measurement time. For the coast-
down curve, the number of measurements that can be assessed can be
increased with a higher overlap.

Pick-up setup is deactivated.
3.2.6.3 Parameters for assessment of a characteristic value / time
signal measurement
For every characteristic value or time signal, three upper and three lower limit
values can be defined (alarm, warning, caution).
! Tick the checkbox in front of the characteristic value.
! Set the limit value.
! Change the name of the limit value if necessary.
! To change the tab, press the +/- button, or mark it with the navigation
pad.
For user-defined assessment setups, you can enter and save a description:
Press the MENU button, and click on Description.
An empty text field appears.
Press the MENU button, and click on Edit. Enter a description in the Text
Editor.
After closing the Text Editor, press the MENU button and click on Save.

3.2.7 Trend
In order to monitor the machine status or condition, parameters are regularly
recorded over an extended period of time. From the resulting trend curve, the
condition of the machine can be traced back, and its probable future
development forecast.
In order to obtain a conclusive trend, measurements must always be carried
out under reproducible conditions, i.e. the operating conditions of the
machine, measurement points and pick-ups must be comparable or identical.
Trend in the operating mode Analysis
First open the file in which the measurements are saved:
Select the measuring problem in Analysis.
Click on Menu -> Load file.
Click on the file with the measurement data in order to open it. Press
enter to start a new measurement.
Alternatively: Press the MENU button, and click on Measure.
After the measurement, press the MENU button, and click on Save.
In the following dialogue, click on Add, in order to add the current result
to the saved data record.
If you would like to create a new file , click on New. In this way you can
easily take over the settings of an existing file for a new measurement.
If you want to overwrite the data of the saved file, select Overwrite.

3.2.8 Enter event / comments
Additional information on special events (e.g. Oil loss) and supplementary
comments can be entered and saved after a measurement. In the route this
information can also be inserted subsequently for already measured
measuring problems and those that have been bypassed. Events are
specified in a list, while comments can be entered as required.
In the results screen, press the MENU button, and click on Event /
Comment.
In the case of subsequent entry of the event / comment, mark the
corresponding measuring problem and then press the MENU button.
Click on the corresponding event group, and in the following screen click
on the corresponding event.
The menu is displayed:
If you would also like to enter a comment, first click on Edit comment.
Enter the comment in the Text Editor.
Then click on Save, in order to save the result in the File Manager.
If you only want to enter a comment: press the MENU button in the results
screen, and click on Event / Comment.
Press again on MENU, and click on Enter comment. Enter the comment
in the Text Editor.
Click on Save, in order to save the result in the File Manager.
In the measurement screen, a comment symbol appears next to the channel
designation when an event or comment has been saved.

3.2.9 Results
After every measurement, you have the facility of saving the result and
evaluating it on the unit. Numerous functions are available for this purpose,
which can be called up in the results screen by pressing the MENU button.
3.2.9.1 Evaluation
Before you evaluate a result, ensure that the measurement is valid, and that
no error message is present.
Result details
After a measurement, you can display the following measurement
parameters: Measuring problem, Measurement channel, Measurement
range, Sensor type, Date/time, Status and statistical information
(characteristic values only):
In the results screen, press MENU, and click on Result details.
Characteristic value - Individual result
In the results screen, up to two characteristic values are displayed
simultaneously. The speed appears if applicable in the lower area. If limit
values have been exceeded during the measurement, these appear in the
field below the corresponding characteristic value. The corresponding LEDs
also light up next to the display. Limit values can be displayed as absolute
values or as the difference from the measurement value.
In case of vibration measurements with more than two characteristic values
(rms, 0p, p-p, 0-p calculated, p-p calculated*, crest factor),press the
navigation key up / down to display the other values.

3.2.9.2 Characteristic value trend
If you save more than two measurements in a file, the results for every
characteristic value will be displayed as a trend.
Every measurement is designated on the trend curve by a marker, and can
be selected with the cursor. The corresponding measurement values appear
below the diagram, together with the date and the events and comments
entered.
The exceeding of limit values can be recognised with the aid of the
superimposed limit value line. If several characteristic values are shown in
the diagram, only the limit value line for the marked characteristic value will
be displayed (in the example below: p-p value). Move the navigation pad
upwards/ and downwards in order to mark the other characteristic values and
show the corresponding limit value lines.
Zoom
Press the Plus(+) button repeatedly in order to show the time axis enlarged
in the area of the cursor. This process can be reversed by pressing the
Minus() button.
The grey bar above a diagram shows the displayed area in relation to the
complete display area.
Delete measurement
If you have accidentally inserted a faulty measurement into the trend, this can
be deleted as follows:
Mark the measurement in the trend with the cursor.
Press the MENU button.
Click on Delete.

3.2.9.3 Time signal
The measurement result is displayed in the upper half of the screen. The
data field in the lower half of the screen lists the two greatest amplitudes. If a
limit value has been exceeded, the limit value will be displayed in the
diagram, and the difference (delta) from the measurement value displayed
in the data field.

3.2.10 Evaluation
The following functions are available for evaluation purposes:
Zoom the time (X) axis
Press the Plus(+) button in order to zoom the time axis. Depending on
the set zoom mode, the view will be zoomed either to the main cursor or
the interval between the main and delta cursor. This process can be
reversed by pressing the Minus() button.
Scaling the amplitude (Y-axis)
Press the navigation key up in order to increase the scaling and make
smaller amplitudes visible.
In order to reduce the scaling again, press the navigation key down.
Cursor
The co-ordinates of the cursor are displayed in the black fields above the
diagram.
Press the MENU button, and click on Cursor.
NONE: Hide all cursors (zoom / scaling not possible!)
MAIN: Show main cursor
Press the navigation keys right/left to move the cursor. The speed
increases if you keep the navigation key pressed.
DELTA: Show/hide Delta cursor
Press 'Enter' to switch over between main and delta cursor. If the Delta
cursor is active, the measurement can only be repeated using the MENU
button (MENU - Repeat)! The cursor co-ordinates give the distance from
the main cursor. The data field also shows the frequency which
corresponds to the distance between the main and Delta cursor.

SIDEBANDS: Show/hide sideband cursor
The number of sidebands is set with the aid of the F button. The cursor
menu can therefore only be opened by pressing the MENU button when
the sideband cursor is active. The spacing of the sidebands is set by
moving the outermost cursor. Press 'Enter' to switch over between cursor.
The position of the whole group can be changed by moving the central
(main) cursor.
Cartesian / circular view
The time signal is displayed as standard in a Cartesian view (y-t diagram).
You can however switch the display to a circular diagram, for example in
order to show the tooth engagement in a gear stage. In this case, the
measured time interval is projected onto a circle, so that the starting point
and end point are next to each other without any overlap. If the shaft turns
once in the measured time interval by 360, the circular diagram then shows
the signal for one complete rotation of the shaft.
Press the F button in order to show the button for the Circular diagram.

Calculate characteristic values
The following characteristic values can be calculated from the time signal:
Maximum / Minimum amplitude, arithmetical average value, p-p value, RMS
value, crest factor.
Press the MENU button
Select Recalculate, and click on Calculate characteristic values.
Spectrum
The result is shown in the upper display field. The time signal appears in the
lower display field during the measurement. After the measurement, the 10
highest amplitudes in the spectrum are listed here (max. 10). If required, one
of the following items of information can also be shown here as standard
after the measurement:

Max 10
This lists the 10 highest amplitudes in the spectrum. Clicking on an entry
marks the corresponding line in the spectrum with the cursor. In order to sort
the list in ascending order descending order by amplitude or frequency,
kicked repeatedly on the corresponding column title.
Time signal
The acceleration time signal forming the basis of the spectrum can be shown
in the lower field for the purposes of checking. Only the zoom function is
available for the assessment of the time signal.
The following functions can be called up direct in the MENU:

In order to enter the machine speed after a measurement, press the MENU
button, and click on Speed entry. Enter the value in the Numbers Editor.

Display RMS
This function calculates the RMS characteristic value of the spectrum, and
shows it in the diagram.
Recalculation
Every spectrum is first calculated from the time signal into sensor
measurement parameters (e.g. acceleration), and converted by integration
into the required measurement parameter (speed, travel). With recalculation,
you have the facility of subsequently changing the measurement parameter
in the spectrum, and for example converting a speed spectrum into a travel
spectrum.
The diagnosis function Alarm is only available when the spectrum is
displayed using the original measurement parameter.
Zoom / Scaling

Cursor
Press the MENU button, and click on Cursor
NONE / MAIN / DELTA: See Time signal
HARMONIC: Show/hide harmonic cursor
Harmonic vibrations in the signal can be assigned with the aid of the
harmonic cursor. The distance of the individual cursors from each other
corresponds to the basic frequency at the main cursor. The main or the
Delta cursor (highest displayed order) can be moved for the purposes of
adjustment.

SUB-HARMONIC: Show/hide sub-harmonic cursor
The sub-harmonic cursor can be used to detect sub-harmonic vibrations
in the signal. The distance of the individual cursors from each other
corresponds to an integral fraction (1/n) of the basic frequency at the main
cursor.
With the sub-harmonic cursor activated, the Delta cursor is not active.
SIDEBANDS: Show/hide sideband cursor
The spacing of the sidebands is set by moving the outermost cursor
(press enter to switch between cursors).
The position of the whole group can be changed by moving the main

Cursor
Only the main and delta cursors are available for evaluation in the 3-D view.
To activate the delta cursor, press the MENU key and click on Cursor >
Delta (see P. 4-5).
Zoom
The Zoom function can be used in the Waterfall diagram along the frequency
axis (=X) as well as along the Z-axis. The amplitude axis (=Y) cannot be
scaled in the 3-D view.
Which of the two axes (X or Z) can be zoomed with the +/- key is displayed
by a flashing bar along the edge. If the right bar flashes, the Z-axis can be
zoomed; if the upper bar flashes, the X-axis can be zoomed.
To change the active axis, press the MENU key and click on Zoom > X-axis
or Zoom > Z-axis.
Evaluating individual spectra (2D view)
For the evaluation of an individual spectrum, proceed as follows:
Highlight the relevant spectrum with the cursor.
Press the F key to display the individual spectrum.
Alternative: Press the MENU key and click on Details.
Call up the respective diagnosis functions with the MENU key.

3.2.12 Setting up the results display in the display setup
With almost all measurements, you can adapt the results display to your
requirements. The necessary settings are carried out in the display setup,
which is called up as follows:

X. Continual measurement (Live mode)
In the live mode, the measured signal is shown in the display without the
calculation of an average value. The actual measurement only starts when
you press enter again. The live mode is available for all characteristic value
measurements, spectra and time signals, but not for 1+1 measurements.
A. Characteristic value measurement
The results screen shows a maximum of two characteristic values and the
assigned limit values. Limit values can be displayed as absolute values or as
the difference (Delta value) from the relevant measurement value. In case
of more than two characteristic values per measurement, you can specify
here which characteristic value will be displayed as standard together with
the RMS value.
If a limit value is exceeded, the RMS value and the characteristic value
exceeding the limit value by the largest amount will be displayed.
After the measurement, move the navigation pad upwards again in order to
display the other characteristic values in order.
Signal measurement
The following display parameters must be set for signal measurements:
ZOOM
Increment when zooming the X- and Y-axis.
Mode: Zooming will take place to the main cursor or the interval between
the Delta and main cursor.

Cross-cursor (short) or line-cursor (long); Line type for line-cursor. In the
case of a waterfall diagram, a grid can be displayed for easier evaluation

In the case of a curve diagram, only the peaks of the individual frequency
lines are connected, while in a bar diagram, every individual line is shown
from the zero point to the peak.
DIAGRAM TYPE (TIME SIGNAL)
A time signal can be shown in terms of Cartesian co-ordinates (X-Y
diagram) or on a circular diagram.
SUFFIX FOR 1/1000 OR 1000
Instead of 1/1000' or 1000', the X-axis can be labelled with the
abbreviation m (= milli) or k (= kilo).
AMPLITUDE (SPECTRUM)
The amplitudes of the frequency components can be displayed as
effective values (RMS) or peak values (0-p, p-p). The effective value can
also be calculated over all frequency components.
ORDER DISPLAY
Scaling of the X-axis in Hz (No) or orders (Yes). The speed of the shaft
must be known (measurement or entry).
SCALING AMPLITUDE
Scaling of the Y-axis: Linear or logarithmic (decibels).
STANDARD
Information which appears as standard in the lower display field (max. 10,
time signal, band alarm, frequency marks, band characteristic values).
C. Characteristic values trend measurement
Trends can be recorded for almost all measurements under the tab
Characteristic values (exception: Phase measurement). The display setup
for a trend measurement can be called up before or after a measurement.

Selection of the characteristic values which will be displayed. For every
trend curve, the line type can be set and the labelling of the curves
shown.

In addition to the trend curve, limit values, event marks, references and
the corresponding labelling can be displayed in the diagram. The line type
is adjustable.
ZOOM:
Speed or increment when zooming (slow, fast or large, small).
LAYOUT:
The measurement points on the trend curve can be designated with
marks. A grid can be displayed for easier evaluation of the data, and the
cursor can be displayed as a cross- (short) or line-cursor (long).
D. Diagnosis measurement (coast-down / run-up analysis)
The following display parameters can be set for the coast-down curve and
the shaft vibration measurement (orbit):

The coast-down curve can be displayed as a Bode or Nyquist diagram.
For the shaft vibration, Orbit (polar display) and Individual signals
(Cartesian display) are available for selection.
PHASE PROGRESSION STEADY
(COAST-DOWN CURVE - PHASE WITH BODE DIAGRAM)
The scale of the phase axis begins at 0and ends at 360. If the curve
runs beyond the 360marking during the measurement, it will be
continued unsteadily at 0(No). If you set the option Yes, the phase axis
will be continued beyond 360- beginning again at 0- and the phase
progression will be continually displayed.
3.3 Printing out results
! Spectrum, Analysis operating mode
! Trending spectrum, Route operating mode
! Characteristic values which will be recorded on a route
PDF is set as the standard printer. The setting converts the printout into a
PDF-file and saves it in the SmartBalancer. This file must be transferred to
the PC with SmartBalancer utility and printed out from there.
In order to print out direct to a printer with the SmartBalancer, you will need:
! A printer with a USB connection

3.3.1 Preparations
Connect the SmartBalancer to the printer with the USB printer cable
provided.
Set up the printer in the SmartBalancer device setup.
Print out the results.
3.3.2 Printing out the spectrum, trend spectrum
If the measurement has already been completed and saved, open the
result.
In the results screen, press the MENU button.
Click on Print. A configuration menu appears.
Select the printer in the Printer menu.
Select the template for the printout in the Reports menu.
A template determines what data will be contained in the printout.
G In order to create a new template, press the MENU button, and click
on New.
G Enter a name and save the template.
G Then enter under the three tabs the data to be contained in the
printout:

3.4 Measuring problems in the analysis
In this chapter you will find information on the individual measuring problems
and tips on performing a measurement.
The module 2-channel measurements must be registered if you want to
perform measurements on both channels
3.4.1 Characteristic vibration values
Characteristic vibration values are used to assess the machine, bearing and
gear conditions. A good indicator for the vibration forces acting on a machine
is the effective value (RMS) of the vibration speed in the frequency range 10
1000 Hz, or 2 - 1000 Hz. Assessment standards for the permissible vibration
levels are specified in the standard ISO 10816-3. In the SmartBalancer,these
ranges are programmed in the form of limit values, and can be called up as
the assessment setup.
In addition to the effective value of the vibration, the SmartBalancer also
detects the highest signal amplitudes as peak values (0-peak, peak-peak)
and uses these to calculate the crest factor.
What is the crest factor?
The crest factor is the ratio of the greatest amplitude to the effective value
(RMS) of a vibration, and is a measure of the strength of the impulses in a
vibration form. The crest factor is used amongst other things for wear
diagnosis in roller bearings and gears, and for cavitation. A harmonic
vibration of amplitude 1' has as the effective value 0.707 and a crest factor
of 1.41. If the crest factor is greater than 1.41, impulses with high amplitudes
occur.

ISO 10816-3 on the assessment of machine vibrations
In order to assess the machine condition, first allocate your machine to a
machine class with the aid of the lower axis. Read off from the lateral axis in
which range the measured effective value falls.
Proceed as follows:
Range A: Continue to measure at regular intervals.
Ranges B, C: Find the cause of the increased vibration levels. Observe the
machine closely. Plan for a switch-off procedure.
Range D: Take immediate measures: Localise the cause, switch the
machine off and rectify the problem.

3.4.2 Speed measurement
The optical laser reference pick-up (VIB 6.631) measures the speed without
any physical contact. An LED in the sensor head emits a light beam, which is
scattered back by a reflection mark on the rotating shaft. If the sensor
detects the reflection, it emits an electrical impulse, and the green LED on
the display lights up. The SmartBalancer calculates the speed from the
repetition rate of the voltage pulses.
To prepare the measurement, apply a suitable reflection mark to the
stationary shaft (e.g. reflective tape). During the measurement, hold the
sensor so that the sensor head with the optic points perpendicularly to the
shaft surface (note the arrow direction on the sensor head!). Optimum
measuring distance: 2 - 100cm.
When balancing or performing measurements with a reference pick-up
signal, mount the sensor on the machine using the reference pick-up stand.
In the case of highly polished, bright shafts, do not hold the sensor
perpendicular to the surface, but at an angle of about 15.
3.4.3 Order tracking analysis
The natural resonances of a machine can be determined with the aid of a
order tracking analysis. In this type of diagnosis measurement, the rotational
frequency vibrations are recorded in relation to the machine speed while the
machine is running up to operating speed or coasting down from the
operating speed to a standstill. The following types of measurement are
available:
! Phase amplitude and phase angle in relation to the speed
! Spectra in relation to the speed
! Characteristic values in relation to the speed
Running up
Start the measurement before you switch on the machine. The
SmartBalancer registers the current speed and starts the measurement
automatically as soon as the set starting speed is exceeded. The
measurement is stopped on reaching the stop speed.
Coasting down
Start the measurement while the machine is running at operating speed. The
SmartBalancer then begins to measure the speed continuously. After you
have switched off the machine and the speed has fallen below the set
starting speed, the SmartBalancer automatically begins the data recording.
The measurements stops when the set stop speed is reached. The start and
stop speed are defined in the measurement setup.
Ensure that the speed sensor is correctly mounted. If the signal is too weak
or missing, this can lead to premature discontinuation of the measurement!

The measuring problems for a coast-down curve are located under the tab
Special. The measurement types Phase - speed and Spectra - speed are
assigned to a measuring problems symbol, while a separate symbol is
provided for the measurement type Characteristic value - speed.

Selection in the measuring problems manager:
Mark the measuring problems symbol.
Press the MENU button, and click on Measuring problem manager.
Click in the top menu in order to display the available measuring
problems.
Select the required measuring problem.
Starting the measurement
Click on the measurement task icon.
A dialog window appears in the measurement screen in which you can
temporarily change the following setup parameters:
- START RPM, STOP RPM
- RPM DEVIATION
- MEASUREMENT RANGE.
Click on 'Start' after the parameters have been set correctly.
During data collection, the relevant measurement data are displayed in a
dialog window.
The menu entries Show dual measurement and Show single measuring
problem show the available 2-channel or 1-channel measuring problems.
Measurement type Characteristic value - speed
In this measurement type, you record the progression of the characteristic
vibration values in relation to the speed. Resonance points show themselves
at speeds with increased vibration amplitude.
The results screen shows in the upper diagram the progression of the
effective value (RMS), while the lower diagram can be used to display one of
the three peak values (0-p, p-p, crest factor):
To do this, press the F button, and select the relevant characteristic value.

Measurement type Phase - speed
In this measurement type, you record the phase amplitude and the phase
angle in relation to the speed. Resonance points show themselves at speeds
with increased amplitude and simultaneous phase angle jumps of (ideally)
180.
Bode diagram
The upper curve shows the amplitude progression, while the lower screen
shows the phase. The zoom function (+/- button, or navigation pad up/down)
acts on both curves.
If you have activated the option Phase progression steady in the display
setup, several horizontal dotted lines may sometimes appear in the phase
diagram. These lines represent the transition 360- 0, which can occur
several times due to the steady continuation of the phase progression.
Nyquist diagram
This type of diagram shows the local curve (amplitude and phase) in polar
co-ordinates.
Switching between diagram types
Press the F button, and click enter.
2-channel measurement
For 2-channel measurements, the following differences occur in the display
of the results.
Characteristic value - speed / Phase - speed
In the case of 2-channel measurements, you can display the channels
individually or together in one screen. Press the F button and select the
option Show channel -> A , B or A+B.

Measurement rate
An important criterion for the quality of the results is the number of
measurement points recorded. The more measurement points, the more
conclusive the measurement. A decisive factor in this respect is how quickly
the machine reaches the operating speed, and how quickly it comes to a
standstill. The greater the time interval between these two conditions, the
more measurement points the SmartBalancer can record. If the time interval
is too short for the adequate number of measurement points, you can
increase the parameter Overlap in the measurement setup, in order to
increase the measurement rate.
In the case of machines which run up or coast down very slowly, the number
of measurement points recorded can become very high, without significantly
improving the quality of the results. In this case, the measurement rate - i.e.
the number of measurements per speed change - can be reduced,
simultaneously saving storage space. To do this, set the parameter Speed
deviation in the measurement setup to a higher value. In the example below,
a measurement is recorded when the speed (rotational frequency => 1Hz =
60 rpm) changes by 1 Hz.
The parameter Speed deviation can also be changed in the fixed
measurement setups set in the works.

In order to display the number of measurement points recorded, press the
MENU button in the results screen, and click on Result details.
3.5 Special
Special tasks for the Smartbalancer are described here.
3.5.1 Phase measurement
The phase measurement is used in order to detect machine faults which
cause lines in the spectrum at the same point (e.g. unbalances, alignment
errors, loose foundation,..). To do this, in synchronous phase measurement,
the amplitude and the phase angle of the vibration indicator are calculated
from the speed-synchronous components of the vibration signal. The
reference pick-up in this case is a laser sensor. In order to simplify the
diagnosis, the measured signal is processed in an order filter. An unbalance
for example creates severe vibrations in the first order, whereas alignment
errors predominate in the second order.
The synchronous phase measurement can be carried out on one or two
channels. With two channels, for example in the case of an unbalance, the
phase difference in both measurement planes can be established. This can
be used to determine whether a static, dynamic or coupled unbalance is
present.

measurement parameter. The size of the speed range to be evaluated is set
in the measurement setup.

Press the right navigation key and click on the required order (1-5).
Scaling
In order to increase the scaling of the diagram, move the navigation pad
upwards. If this move is a phase vector out of the diagram, the display area
will also be specified relative to the longer, no longer visible vector (e.g. 92%
of A).
3.5.2 Recording
With the Recording* function, you can perform measurements dependent
on time or rotational speed. For example, this method can be used to record
measurement values under certain operating conditions (= rpm range) or at
fixed time intervals.

IMMEDIATELY: The recording starts immediately (MENU ->
Start).
START IN: The measurement recording begins after a
set period (0 s ...23:59:59 h).
START AT: The measurement recording begins
at the set time (time, date) or when
the set rpm is reached (0 ... 1000
Hz); rising or falling edge can be
selected. For an rpm-controlled
measurement, the task must
contain an rpm measurement.
DELAY: Specifies the time/rpm change between two
measurements.
Stop conditions
COUNTER: The measurement is ended when the
entered number of results has been
measured (1 ... 10000).
RUN FOR: The measurement recording runs for the
specified time (0 s ... 23:59:59 h).
STOP AT: The measurement stops at the specified
time or when the set rpm is reached (0 ...
1000 Hz); the rising or falling edge can be
selected.
MANUAL: The measurement stops when the memory
card is full or when the ESC key is pressed.
Further settings
SWITCH OFF BACKLIGHT: To save power when operating the device
during recording, the display illumination can
be switched off permanently.
Individual: The trigger condition is only considered
before the first measurement.
Multi: Only start each measurement when the
trigger condition has been met.
TARGET FILE: The results and the configuration settings
are saved in a file. It is not possible to add
multiple recording files.
The start, stop and delay conditions can be independently controlled
according to time or rpm. For example, recording can be set to start at a
certain time, but the next measurements only take place
after a certain change in the rpm.

Starting the measurement recording
! Press the MENU key in the configuration screen and click on Start.
The measurement screen appears. A dialog is displayed in the foreground
that contains the most important information on the recording: start
conditions, stop conditions, trigger variable (time or
rpm), number of measurement values already recorded (see below).
A sensor test is always performed prior to recording. Exception: the start
condition is set to 'Immediately'.
Ending the measurement recording
The measurement recording is ended when
- the stop condition is fulfilled
- the ESC button is pressed
- the memory card is full
- the maximum number of results is reached (65535).
3.5.3 Envelope analysis, roller bearing condition (optional)
The envelope analysis is a proven method for detecting periodic impacts in
the vibration signal of a machine. This is used primarily for the diagnosis of
roller bearing damage and gearing damage, and is based on the
demodulation of amplitude-modulated vibration signals.
Periodic impact consequences in a component generate high-frequency
machine resonances, which act as the carrier signal of the low-frequency
impact signal. In order to separate the low-frequency modulation from the
high-frequency resonance, the signal is filtered in a high-pass, aligned and
subsequently filtered in a low-pass. The remaining signal then consists only
of the modulation signal - the so-called envelope - from which the envelope
frequency spectrum can be calculated by FFT.

The SmartBalancer saves the last filtered envelope time signal together with
the envelope frequency spectrum. To display the time signal, press the
MENU button and select Info / Time signal.
3.5.4 User-defined measurement parameters
In addition to measuring problems with fixed measurement parameters, the
SmartBalancer also provides measuring problems in which the measurement
parameter can be freely defined. Voltage (30V, AC/DC) or current (30mA,
AC/DC) can be connected as the input signal, and the time signal (AC only)
or spectrum (AC only) recorded as the characteristic value. The allocation of
the input signal to the measurement parameter is defined in the pick-up
setup within the parameters Measurement parameter and Unit.

The signal before the excitation is also recorded.
3.5.5 Impact test
The impact test is used to determine the natural resonance frequencies of a
structure. In the case of a rotating machine, this can be used to determine
the speed ranges in which vibrations* are increased disproportionately due to
resonance, and can damage the machine. These ranges should then be
avoided in operation, and passed through as quickly as possible when
running up and coasting down.
In principle, any vibration source is suitable for exciting a structure which
contains as many frequencies as possible - such as a pulsed impact with a
rubber hammer.
Check and change the measurement parameters if necessary.
The measurement can be performed with the machine stationary or in
operation. The signals generated by the machine in operation can be
blanked out by the so-called negative averaging procedure*.
Mount the pick-up on the machine, either with a magnet or with a screw
connection.
Set the number of individual measurements in the measurement setup
(e.g. 3 measurements).
Start the measurements by clicking on the Measure symbol. Excite the
machine with a suitable rubber hammer:
Tap in the vicinity of the pick-up in the measurement direction once per
measurement.
For every further measurement, tap once with a hammer, and always in
the same place.
After every individual measurement, you can accept or discard the result. In
the event of overrange, the measurement is discarded automatically. On
completion of all measurements, the averaged end result appears, together
with the 10 highest amplitudes in the spectrum.
Tips on setting the measurement parameters:
Set the Trigger Start time to a negative value if you would also like to
record the signal before excitation.

If the measurement starts before the excitation, increase the trigger
threshold in the measurement setup by about one half.
If the reply signal is over range, increase the parameter Measurement
range in the measurement setup accordingly.
Measurement with machine running
Activate the Negative averaging in the measurement setup.
Carry out the individual impact tests.
Then measure the reference spectrum without exciting the machine! Click
in the following dialogue window on Start.
Click on Stop when enough reference spectra have been recorded and
have been averaged to produce a result.
Display results
Activate the upper display field by pressing the F button.
Press the MENU button, and click on Select data record.
The results of the impact tests, the averaged end result and the reference
measurement (negative averaging) are listed here, and can be displayed
individually by clicking on them.
To close the list, press the ESC button.
Repeat individual measurements
Activate the upper display field by pressing the F button.
Press the MENU button, and click on Repeat. Click on the relevant
measurement in the list.

4. Appendix
This chapter provides information on the operation of the Numbers and Text
Editor, the auxiliary programme SmartBalancer utility and the File Manager.
Instructions on the handling and care of the SmartBalancer and the technical
data complete the description of the measuring unit.
4.1 Numbers Editor
The Numbers Editor appears when a numerical value has to be entered,
such as the bearing diameter or the impact impulse standardisation.
To make an entry, move the cursor over the character field, and click on
the required number.
To delete, press the ESC button. The left figure of a number will be
deleted.
The prefix can be changed at any time by selecting .
Decimal points are entered with the point ..
To save the value, press the MENU button, and click on OK.
Decimal points can only be entered if the parameter Accuracy of the
relevant parameter is not set to Zero. The accuracy parameters are set in
the works. These can be found in the device setup under Units.
If a value exceeds the permissible range (Maximum / Minimum), the
corresponding entry field will be shown with a black background. The value
can only be saved when it is again within the permissible range.
4.2 Text Editor
Enter text
Press the F button until the cursor is placed in the character table. The
marked character appears inverted.
Click on the relevant characters in the table one after the other, in order to
enter the text. If the current character table does not contain the required
character, press the +/ button in order to display further character
tables.
Then press the MENU button, and click on OK.
To cancel, press the ESC button.
Delete text
Press the F button until the cursor is placed in the text field.
Deleting a character / word:
G Place the cursor to the right of the character / word.
G Press the F button, and click on <= in the character table (reset
button).
Delete text field:
G Press the F button until the complete text field is marked.
G Click once enter.
G Press the F button again, and click on <= in the character table (reset
button).

contains the texts which can be accepted or changed if necessary by
clicking.

4.3 File Manager
The File Manager is used for the management of measurement files which
were recorded in the operating modes Analysis and Balance (optional).
The following functions are available in the File Manager: Save, Open,
Rename, Duplicate, Move, Delete, Sort, Search.
If the print function is set up in the SmartBalancer, the print files created in
PDF format will also be displayed in the File Manager. These can also be
printed out and deleted from here.
The File Manager is opened when you
click on the File Manager symbol in the starting screen.

The File Manager works according to measurement parameters: When
opening and saving, only files of the current measurement parameter will be
displayed (e.g. characteristic value - vibration acceleration). If you open the
File Manager from the starting screen, all the files will be displayed.

4.4 SmartBalancer Utility
With the auxiliary programme SmartBalancer utility you can:
! update firmware.
! install printer drivers (Linux) into the SmartBalancer.
! load background images for the start window in the SmartBalancer.
! back-up and restore results and settings.
! load screen contents onto the PC.
! load PDF files onto the PC.
! load CSV files with balancing results onto the PC.
Installing and starting the programme
The installation program (SmartBalancer_utility_version.exe) can be found
on the CD-ROM with the update:
Double-click on the file in order to start the installation.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
In the starting screen, all available functions can be initiated by buttons.
1) Display version number; 2) Change language
Setting up the connection with SmartBalancer
The data transfer takes place via the USB connection.
Connect the SmartBalancer to the network connection or the PC using
the cable provided.
Click on the button Connection.
Set the type of connection (USB).
In order to test the connection, click on the button Test communication.
In the event of a successful connection, a yellow Smiley symbol appears.
A red Smiley symbol indicates a faulty connection.

Configuring the SmartBalancer
The configuration includes the following functions:
! Update firmware
! edit logo for report printouts
Click on the button Configure device.
Clicking the button New firmware starts the auxiliary programme
SmartBalancer update tool, which updates the firmware in the
SmartBalancer.
This programme must be installed in the folder provided on the PC:
C:\Programme\RoTec\SmartBalancer\UpdateTool
Transfer files
The following files can be transferred from the device to the PC:
! PDF files created by printing out with the PDF printer driver.
! Screenshots created with the button combination <F> + <Minus>.
! Balancing results
Click on the button Transfer files.
Then click on the relevant button, and select the files to be transferred.
Click on Transfer in order to start the data transfer.
Press Delete to remove the file from the device. Exit closes the file
selection window.

Settings for the back-up procedure
Transfer system files
Back-up and restoration of the measurement data and device configuration
(Back-up / Restore).
Click on the button System files.
To carry out a data back-up, click on Back-up.
In the following screen, select the data category (Settings / Results), and
if necessary specify the target folder.
Click on Back-up to start the procedure.
Restoration (Restore) is carried out in the same way.
4.4.1 Extended Report Software
Request Registration
To request extended report software for generating Excel-reports, please
proceed as follows:
Connect the SmartBalancer by means of the corresponding cable at the PC
and switch on the SmartBalancer.
Start your utility program on the PC.
Click on key symbol, then click on the button get serial number

Release extended Report Software
After you have received your password, you have to enter it in your utility
program.
Proceed as described in the latest chapter, connect the SmartBalancer in
switched-on mode with your PC and start the utility program.
Get again the serial number of your unit, click it on and enter your password
in the corresponding line.
Confirm with "register serial".
Your SmartBalancer is now registered for the additional function.

The file will be saved as Excel- and CSV-file in the directory chosen by you.
4.5 Technical instructions
The SmartBalancer is a precision instrument, and should be handled as
such.
Storage
For transport and for measurements in the field, the SmartBalancer should
be stored in the SmartBalancer carrying pouch* (VIB 5.354). If the
SmartBalancer is not to be used for an extended period of time, store the
measuring device in the case. Connect it to the power supply regularly in
order to avoid complete discharging of the battery.
Ensure that
! the storage location is dry
! the measuring device is not stored in the immediate vicinity of electronic
devices which can generate strong electromagnetic fields.
! the measuring device is not exposed to temperatures above 70 C or
below -20 C.
! the air humidity at the storage location does not exceed 90%.
Cleaning
In the event of light soiling, the carrying pouch and the housing can be wiped
down with a damp cloth. Stubborn soiling can be removed with a normal
household cleaner.
The display is protected against damage by a scratch-proof transparent film.
If required, replacement protective film can be ordered from your SCHENCK
RoTec dealer. Use only a soft, dry cloth to clean the display and the film.
Never use thinners, spirit, isopropanol or other aggressive cleaning agents!
Maintenance and calibration
Various factors such as ageing or temperature cause an offset in the analog
electronics. This offset should be corrected about every two months.

Guarantee
The measurement device is guaranteed for 1 year. The guarantee is
invalidated if service work is carried out by unauthorised persons.
Spare parts, accessories
Only original spare parts and accessories must be used. Information on this
point can be found in the SmartBalancer product catalogue (VIB 9.661-5).
The current version can be downloaded from the SCHENCK RoTec
homepage (www.schenck-rotec.com).
Disposal
The SmartBalancer and accessories must be disposed of at the end of their
service life in accordance with the applicable environmental regulations of
your country.
The battery must be completely discharged when sending it for disposal. The
battery is fully discharged when the charging condition display is completely
white, and the message Battery empty appears in the display. For safety
purposes, cover the metal contacts of the battery with adhesive tape.
In countries of the European Union in which the EU Directive 2002/96/EG
"Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" (WEEE) has already been
implemented in national law, the following regulations apply:
! SCHENCK RoTec products which come under this Directive are labelled
with the symbol shown at the left.
! The return and proper disposal of electrical and electronic devices after
use is carried out by the manufacturer.
! WEEE-Reg.-No. DE41252901
This means for you as the end-customer:
! All electrical and electronic SCHENCK RoTec products, and electrical and
electronic accessories (e.g. cables, sensors, etc.) must be disposed of
through SCHENCK RoTec or its appointed disposal partner. This

6. Problems & solutions
Symptom:
SmartBalancer cannot be run-up. The start procedure is not completed, the
screen with the LINUX penguin remains in view.
Cause:
Serious fault in the firmware.
Solution:
Reload firmware.
The measurement data in the device is retained.

Before you reload the firmware, ensure that the following components are
available or installed on the PC:
! PC software: SmartBalancer Utility.
Connect the SmartBalancer to the mains.
Connect the SmartBalancer to the PC using the USB-cable.
Start the SmartBalancer update tool on the PC.
Click on the button Configure device.

7.2 Messages during balancing
No adequate improvement
The vibration values are higher than 1 mm/s and have not
improved adequately. Check whether the cause is actually an
unbalance.
One-plane balancing is recommended
The dynamic component of the calculated balancing weight is
larger than the static component. The results will not be improved
significantly if you continue with the balancing in two planes.

Remove balancing weight?
After every balancing run, the balancing weight can be left on the
rotor or removed. Answer this inquiry with YES or NO.
Speed measurement
Before every balancing run, the Smartbalancer detects the speed.
The green LED lights up when the speed sensor transmits a
pulse.
Please check reference pick-up!
No signal is being received from the speed sensor. Possible
causes: Signal path interrupted, unfavourable lighting conditions,
incorrect orientation of the reference pick-up optic to the reference
mark,...
Initialise
The measurement amplifier is being set (Autorange)
Speed fluctuating. Result may be faulty!
The speed fluctuations are too great, or deviate too much from the
speed measured in the preceding balancing run. Wait until the
machine has reached the balancing speed before starting the
measurement.
Vibration indicator unstable
The amount and/or phase of the vibration indicator is changing too
much. The Smartbalancer increases the set averaging number
automatically until the signal is stable, or the maximum averaging
number (20) is reached.
Maximum averaging number reached
The Smartbalancer has set the averaging number to 20. If this has
stabilised the vibration indicator, you can continue with the
balancing.
Balancing planes not separable (2-plane balancing)
The effects of the balancing weights in the other plane are equally
strong, or are so arranged that they cancel each other out. The
results may not be able to be used for the subsequent correction
runs. Balancing in one plane is recommended.
Indicator change too great
The vibration indicator in the test run has changed too much in
amount and phase in comparison to the initial unbalance run.
Indicator change too small
The vibration indicator in the test run has changed too little in
amount and phase in comparison to the initial unbalance run.
If the change is too great, the test weight must be reduced; if
the change is too small, the test weight must be increased.
Restart recommended (1-plane balancing)
If the vibration values and the balancing weights increase from
one balancing run to the next, no further improvement can be
expected. The complete balancing measurement should be
repeated.
Masses combined. Remove previously fitted masses!

The previously fitted balancing weights have been combined
(vectorially) into one weight. Fit the weight calculated in the data
screen to the rotor, and remove all previously fitted balancing
weights. Start the next balancing run. The balancing condition
should not change significantly in comparison to the last run.
