ABSTRACT
The wavelet transformer has received a great attention in power community in last
years, because are better suited for the analysis of certain types of transient
waveforms than the other transforms approach. This presents a descriptive overview
of the wavelet transforms application in power system. The main publications carried
out in this field have been analyzed and classified by areas. An application of wavelet
analysis to power system transient generated signals is presented. With the time-
frequency localization characteristics embedded in the wavelets, the time and
frequency information of a waveform can be presented as a visualized scheme. For
time intervals where the function changes rapidly, this method can zoom in on the
area of interest for better visualization of signal characteristics. Automation of the
power system fault identification using information conveyed by the wavelet power
system transients is proposed. Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) for detecting the
type of fault is used. Wavelet Transform (WT) of the transient disturbance caused as
a result of occurrence of fault is performed. The detail coefficient for each type of
simple fault is characteristic in nature.
