What if Nativity didnt exist? What if my family didnt exist? How would my life change? Thats when it became
crystal clear to me. These things dont exist for us, they are us. They represent our very core of life. They are our
support strength, reason to be happy and feel a part of something good and meaningful.

Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Service and Bible Study
with Or Tzion Synagogue
Nativity is proud once again to celebrate Thanksgiving with our Jewish
friends at Or Tzion Synagogue. This year, the service will celebrate the
theme of Peace, or Shalom. The service includes readings and prayers
from both traditions, some amazing music provided by our choir and
musicians along with Or Tzions cantor, Melissa Berman, and true
Thanksgiving for our shared American traditions. Dont miss it!
Our joint Thanksgiving celebration includes two events:
Bible Study: Tuesday, November 18, 7:00 p.m. at Nativity: led
by Pastor Susan, Rabbi Micah Caplan, Dr. Wayne, and Cantor
Melissa Berman. A great tradition of learning about our two
faiths!
Worship Service: Tuesday, November 25, 7:00 p.m. at Or Tzion,
6140 E. Thunderbird, Scottsdale: Its the fourth year of this great
tradition! This year we will be focusing on the theme of peace, or
in Hebrew, Shalom!

Being thankful is good for your health! According
to a recent article:
A growing body of research suggests
that maintaining an attitude of gratitude
can improve psychological, emotional
and physical well-being. Adults who
frequently feel grateful have more
energy, more optimism, more social
connections and more happiness than
those who do not, according to studies
conducted over the past decade. They're
also less likely to be depressed, envious,
greedy or alcoholics. They earn more
money, sleep more soundly, exercise
more regularly and have greater
resistance to viral infections.

As often happens, research confirms what many
of us have known all along: remembering to stop
and give thanks for the many blessings of life
helps us keep a happy and healthy attitude,
improves our relationships, and brings us closer to
God.
In our Episcopal worship tradition, we give a
profound act of thanks every Sunday. Did you
know that the word Eucharist is a Greek word
that means thanksgiving? Our most important
act of worship is to offer our gifts of bread and
wine to God, who transforms them, infused with
the real presence of Christ, and offers them back
to us as Christs gift of himself.
In the Eucharist, we celebrate a sacrifice our
sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God.
When we sacrifice something, we set it aside; we
make it holy and sacred. In the act of Eucharist,
we are taking our own thanksgivings, part of a
healthy life, and offering them to God as a sacred
part of life. And, as with so many things, when
we offer our thanksgiving to God, God gives it
back to us, transformed with Gods glory.
This Thanksgiving season, make a point of
remembering to be thankful. Offer your
thanksgiving to God in our joint Thanksgiving
service with Or Tzion Synagogue, one of the most
beautiful and joyous services of the year, as we
share music and prayers from both traditions.
Offer your Thanksgivings to God in your
stewardship contributions, as you join Christ in
his redeeming work through our church. Offer
your Thanksgiving to God in your weekly act of
worship, the Eucharist. Offer your Thanksgiving
to God in your family, as you celebrate the ones
you love, who bring depth and richness to your
life. We have much to be thankful for.

November marks the end of our Year
A cycle of readings and the
beginning of Year B. The Old
Testament readings have been
following the story of the Israelites
as they continue on their path
toward the land of promise. Finally,
in our November readings, they will
get there and then promptly realize
that it is not so easy to be the people of
God whose promise is fulfilled. The message
comes out that when you receive that one thing that you
thought would make your life automatically wonderful,
somehow it isn't. We, like our Israelite forebears, tend to
become fixated on a thing, a possession or whatever, that
"if only I had THAT, my life would be great!." Join us for
Bible Study on Sunday mornings after Eucharist and get in
on this conversation about all our lives. Adult Christian
Formation happens after each service: After the 9 a.m.
service in the Youth Room and after the 10:30 service in
the Music Classroom.

Big Fun Bible Movie Night
"The Greatest
Story Ever
Told" recounts
the life of Jesus
based on a
novel of the
same title that
drew from a
radio series that
broadcast in
1947. They
originally built
the Jerusalem
set in
northeastern
Arizona but
after getting
snowed on
twice, they
broke set and
moved to
DesiLu studios
in California to
film those epic
scenes. The 1965 movie stars some big names like Max
von Sydow as Jesus, John Wayne as the Centurion at the
cross and Claude Raines as King Herod. Telly Savalas,
who played Pontius Pilate, shaved his head for the part and
kept the signature bald look the rest of his acting career.
This extra long movie will play on 2 consecutive Friday
Nights--November 7 and 14 at Nativity's exclusive
screening room (AKA the Longley-Cook Children's
Center) at 7:00 p.m.

Don't miss out on all the exciting
events in November and December!
Beautiful All Saints celebration with
two different services: Gospel style at
9 a.m. (with such favorites as "Fly
Away", "Jesus is a Rock in the Weary
Land" and "When All the Saints Go
Marching In") and much more
meditative style at 10.30 a.m. The
latter, written by Joyce Ditzler, is a
collection of poetic prayers and
beautiful hymns. It will make you ponder on the saints you
might not even have known before!
November 9th at 4 p.m. will bring a celebration of the
Veteran's day. The Nativity Music Ministry has been
working hard to prepare this unique musical offering. Our
talented writer Joyce Ditzler came up with the idea, and I
had a pleasure to put it into practice. You will hear the
Veterans from our parish reading beautiful poems; the
Nativity Choir, mezzosoprano Marcy McKee and baritone
Michael Frongillo performing anthems and solos. All
accompanied by the instrumental ensemble of trumpet,
saxophone, guitar, violin and piano, and directed by yours
truly. Those who came to our performance last year
reported that they left moved and transformed, sometimes
shedding a tear or two. Join us! Admission free.
On Tuesday, November 25th, at 7 p.m. we are having a
special Thanksgiving service with our old friends from the
synagogue Or Tzion (former Or Chadash). Cantor Melissa
Berman and I are cooking an inspiring concoction of music
from both our traditions. Don't miss out on this amazing
interfaith opportunity!
If you were interested in listening to me playing a slightly
larger organ than the Nativity one, I will be performing a
solo organ recital in Gammage auditorium on ASU Tempe
campus on November 12th at noon. Gammage has
organized an organ series in commemoration of the 50th
anniversary of the Auditorium and its custom-built large
Aeolian-Skinner organ. It is a beautiful instrument that is
most times kept silent, since Gammage is mainly used for
large theater productions. It is a rare occasion to hear the
instrument in its glory, so feel free to come and listen on
Wednesday, November 12th, at noon. I will be telling
stories and showing all the colorful stops of this fantastic
organ!

I let my mind wander through the impact Nativity has had
on each one of us. Some profound, to some more like a
comfort. Oh, wow. It is all these things. Our missions, our
outreach touches so many and really does have the power to
transform lives through the love of Jesus Christ. Ive
watched the miracle of children coming into our Christian community as
babies and growing into the Nativity family. I watch new faces come in
increasing numbers and know each one has a story. Why are you here? What
does this communion hold for you? And I see the comfort and peace that our
church home brings to those living their golden years.
How can it be all these things to all these people and more? Theres the people
in our sister parishes, Santa Maria Magdalena, in Veracruz, St. Marys of
Moonlight, in Navajoland, and Santa Maria, right here in west Phoenix. We are
all, working together, able to reach each other and the community around us.
Last year we came close to reaching our dream budget. I want to challenge you
reach in your pocket and your heart and nd all you can a!ord and share with
this holy place Nativity Church. Help all see the face of God more clearly by
the successful e!orts of our missions. Help us to always be there for each
other. Help us to all feel the joy of sharing what we have here at Nativity Church
with more and more of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
So, I ask you all to pledge. Pledge what you can. Pledge all you can. Please
PLEDGE and Live the Vision.

Who is on our Angel Tree 2014?
The Angel Tree will be in Christopher Hall on Nov. 16

. Nativity is supporting three groups
this year. Below is a brief description of the organizations and some of the benefits they
bring to our community. All UNWRAPPED gifts must be returned by Dec. 7
th
.
Save the Familyempowers families to conquer
homelessness and achieve life-long independence. They work
within six valley cities and last year alone served over 500
families. Save the Family believes that the key to ending the
cycle of homelessness is showing our children that there is a
brighter future. More than 60% of their clients are children and
they are provided with counseling, art classes, tutoring, after-
school programs and community outreach projects to protect
against gang violence and school drop-out. Parents are required
to attend classes in the career center to help them secure jobs providing a living wage and other classes, such as basic
budgeting and parenting. Save the Familys housing program is available after a strict eligibility process and only
available for nine months, which is when families should be able to move out on their own. Staff support will always
be available to them, but this is truly a program that practices being a hand-up, not a hand-out.
Vista Del Caminois a city of Scottsdale Community Outreach Program and this year
we have taken names from their Senior/Disabled programs. Vista Del Camino has 3 senior
centers providing recreational classes and programs, along with social workers and support
services to help low-income seniors and the disabled. Many of our Vista Angel Tree gift
recipients exist solely on social security, so our gift will be very meaningful for them.
Seniors and the disabled are sometimes the forgotten ones during the holidays and we hope
that with Nativitys help we can make this a special time for everyone, young and old.
Homeward Boundis a transitional program that helps women and children fleeing domestic violence and
families facing eviction and homelessness. Each phase of their 12 24 month program gives their families the
foundation of social skills and professional capabilities they need to live independent, successful and hopeful lives.
HB families are provided with transitional housing and each family is required to pay 30% of their adjusted gross
income to assist with housing, utilities and social services. Families are also provided affordable on-site childcare so
parents may secure and maintain employment. Homeward Bound is a valuable asset for many people.

Church of The Nativity will be working
with our friends in The Episcopal Habitat
Coalition on Saturday, November 8th.
We are helping to build a home at 6829 N
61st Ave in Glendale, and there is plenty of
work to be done. Join us for part of your
Saturday to make a huge difference to a
needy family while actually having some
fun! You do not need to be an experienced
builder! Volunteers must be at least 16
years old and we ask that you bring your
own work gloves as well as proper shoes.
Flip flops are NOT allowed. Work begins at
7:30 and usually ends about 2:00PM. Water
is provided and one of our sister parishes
will provide a sandwich lunch. Please sign
up on the Volunteer sheets hanging in the
hallway just outside the office. If you would
like a ride, please note this on your sign up and we will organize a carpool to and from Nativity. Thank you in

Nativity Choir is looking for new members!
If you enjoy making music in a group, and want to be involved in a
ministry that brings a lot of satisfaction and is always visible during our
worship, consider joining us. We are a very energetic and fun group of
people who rehearse every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. And often
socialize afterwards. We love welcoming new members (with choir
experience or without) and sharing our love of music. It does not matter
which service you attend - the choir divides into two groups on Sundays
and we need singers at both services. If you are interested, come to any of
our rehearsals on Wednesdays, talk to our Music Director Ilona after one

Men's Pub Fellowship
Do you crave erudite conversations with men of colossal intellectual prowess? Well, maybe you can pass this up, then.
However, if you like beer, come join us at the Mens Pub Fellowship (Pub Night with the Padre)! Hosted as always
by our own intrepid and illustrious leader, The Rev. Dr. Wayne Whitney.
MPF has switched to the first Thursday of each month, to correspond with Womens Wine Night, but will be held at a

Christmas/Epiphany Pageant
Be watching for the Christmas/Epiphany Pageant cast list
and agreement in your email the first week in December.
Darrell will be casting the three part pageant based on
who was interested in the Prayerful Players and his
experience with our actors during the last couple of
performances. Cast members will be sent a script and a
list of rehearsal dates. Parts will be switched around if a
student cannot attend rehearsals but everyone who wants
to be a part of the pageant will have a part! Scripts are
going out early so you can have your parts memorized by
the time we meet for the first rehearsal on December 14!

We will have a Family Advent Activity during
our Sunday School time on November
30th! At 10:15, families of all shapes and
sizes (with and without children) will gather
in the Sunday School Classrooms to make an
Advent Paper Chain to take home. The
project is appropriate for all ages and will
give each family a daily activity and prayer
time during Advent. Everyone is welcome to
kick off the season with the intention for
peace and preparation rather than chaos that
can happen as we move closer to Christmas.
Second Sunday of Advent
On December 7, St. Nicholas, the Bishop
of Myra, will be visiting during Children's
Chapel! We will be removing our shoes
before we come to Children's Chapel that
day and there may be a surprise waiting
when we come out to go to church!
Then following the 10:30 service the
youth group will host the annual Cookie
Bake-off! There will be prizes for the
people who make the three cookies that
get the most votes from the parishioners!

Christmas Tree Ornaments
The youth group will be selling Christmas Tree
Ornaments to go on the church trees that go in the
sanctuary during Christmas. The Trees are beautiful with
just lights but they could be even more beautiful with
matching religious ornaments hanging on them. Watch
in December for the ornament table and come purchase
ornaments for the church trees. You'll be supporting
Nativity in two ways! Providing beautiful decorations
and helping to fund the Youth Group Mission Trip!
