Democratic mayoral
candidate says her support
for LGBT community is strong
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
EDITORS NOTE: This is the third and nal in-
stallment in a series proling the leading D.C.
mayoral candidates. Previous interviews with
Carol Schwartz and David Catania are available
at washingtonblade.com.
D.C. Council member and mayoral
candidate Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) had
an emphatic and detailed response to the
question of why LGBT residents should
vote for her over her two main opponents.
Mayoral rivals David Catania, an at-large
Council member since 1997, and former at-
large Council member Carol Schwartz, who
served on the Council for 16 years, have a
longer record on LGBT issues than Bowser
by way of their longer tenure on the
Council. Both are running as independents.
Bowser, who leads Catania and
Schwartz in the latest polls, rst won
election to the Council in 2007.
Ive been as you know well regarded
across the city for supporting the LGBT
community and have done so from a
leadership position from my Council seat,
Bowser told the Blade in an Oct. 17 interview.
I was very proud to cast a vote in support
of marriage equality and make sure that
were opening up all of our institutions for
people in the LGBT community.
Bowser added, Whats important now
is whats next to do. And thats a lot.
Using the mayors o ce as a platform
for drawing attention to hate crimes
targeting the LGBT community and their
root causes, making sure LGBT people,
especially LGBT seniors, are included in
the citys aordable housing programs,
and strengthening the citys job training
program for transgender residents
initiated by Mayor Vincent Gray are just
some of the LGBT issues she will pursue if
elected mayor, Bowser said.
LGBT activists following the mayors
race say the LGBT community appears
divided between Bowser and Catania,
who, if elected, would become the
citys rst out gay mayor. Activists say
Schwartz, a longtime popular gure in
the LGBT community, has a smaller but
highly committed corps of supporters in
the LGBT community.
Many LGBT Democrats, including Paul
Kuntzler, co-founder of the Gertrude Stein
Democratic Club, the citys largest LGBT
political group, are supporting Catania,
saying they believe hes the best candidate
on both LGBT and non-LGBT issues.
But Bowser points to her strong support
among LGBT residents in all sections
of the city. She is often accompanied at
LGBT campaign events by her openly gay
brother, Marvin Bowser, who serves as
her campaigns LGBT community liaison.
An LGBT campaign rally for Bowser
Tuesday night at Hanks Oyster Bar next
to 17th Street, N.W., before the start of
the annual Halloween High Heel Race on
17th Street, drew more than 200 people.
Bowser was besieged by well-wishers
when she waded into a crowd of mostly
LGBT people waiting for the race to begin.
Catania and Schwartz also showed up
for the high heel race festivities. People
carrying Bowser and Catania signs could
be seen up and down the street.
As I see it Im very proud of the broad
base of support that I have in the LGBT
community across all kinds of race and
income and geographic areas, she said.
I was never more proud maybe a
month ago we had a huge LGBT meet
and greet and the diversity is what made
me so proud. People were from every
ward gay, lesbian, transgender all to
support the agenda that remains.
Bowser was also quick to challenge an
allegation by Catania that her record on
HIV/AIDS is non-existent. Catania told the
Blade in an interview in early October that
he cannot recall her ever mentioning HIV/
AIDS during her seven years on the Council.
Thats not a fair assessment at all, she
said. But I know what is an absurd statement
is that one person can claim to have driven
down AIDS in the District of Columbia.
Bowser was referring to Catanias
campaign statements that during his
tenure as chair of the Councils Committee
on Health, in which he prodded city o cials
to strengthen the citys AIDS o ce, the
number of AIDS deaths in the city dropped
by 69 percent and the number of new HIV
infections dropped by 50 percent.
So the idea, rst of all, that a lot of
people reject at the Whitman-Walker
Clinic or in previous administrations
the executives who really put the money
and the people in place to get prevention
programs and treatment programs and
testing programs in place they have to
have a big quarrel with the assertion that
one legislator drove down the incidents
of HIV in the District of Columbia, Bowser
said. Thats just not true.
Possibly for the rst time during the
campaign Bowser responded to rumors
that have circulated in anonymous
postings on Twitter and readers
comments on the Blades website that
she might be a lesbian.
Well Im not, she said.
When asked about the social media
postings where the rumors have surfaced,
Bowser said, They post a lot of wacky
things. I think you know that. But as I said
Im very proud to have the support of a
lot of people in the LGBT community who
are posting on your newspaper as well.
She added, And theyre posting on
things that matter that Im focused on
how we build on the democratic values
in this city and represent the large swath
of Washingtonians who want to invest in
our schools all across the city, who want
to build a strong and growing middle
class in the city, and who want to make
sure that were attracting the talent in our
government thats going to allow us to get
ready for the citys growth over the next
25 years. And so thats what our focus is.

Washington Blade: Can you tell a little

about your background growing up in
D.C., what you did before getting elected
to the Council, and how that might have
prepared you for running for mayor?
Muriel Bowser: Oh, absolutely. I would
love to. I think that my experience is
directly related not only to how weve been
able to bring the city back in so many ways
but it directly relates to the challenges
ahead. I have the wonderful experience of
being born and raised here in the District
of Columbia. And in my formative years
especially we were a very dierent city,
a city that was dangerous, a city whose
schools were spiraling out of control. The
school issues were spiraling out of control
and the Congress took us over.
And so I have that context to know that
the government and the community have
to work together to make sure we never
go back to those days. Ive been trained
in public policy, which is my passion. And
I worked 10 years in local government
before being elected to the Council
most recently in Montgomery County
where I worked in downtown Silver
Spring on transportation, downtown
development in keeping the community
engaged in all of those issues.
I was elected in 2007 to represent Ward
4. And quite frankly I think the experience
as a ward Council member is the best
experience to be mayor of the District of
Columbia. As a ward Council member you
have the responsibility to lead a discreet
group of people and be held accountable
by them. And thats what weve been able
to do. We moved an agenda focused
on expanding quality school options,
investing in our under invested corridors
and also making sure were holding
government agencies accountable.
So as such I have to know all of the
directors, all of their budgets and how
theyre working or not working. And that has
given me the experience to lead the city.

Blade: Were you an ANC commissioner?

Bowser: I was an ANC commissioner.
When I moved in my home I was lucky
enough, smart enough I guess even at the
time to buy a home in a neighborhood
that I thought was a good neighborhood.
It could be a great neighborhood. And I
got a house for $125,000. I had a few
criteria. I wanted three bedrooms, I
wanted a nished basement and I wanted
to be close to a Metro. And I was able to
nd that in Riggs Park and Ive lived there
ever since for the last 14 years.
But I come from a tradition of ANCs. My
father was elected in the rst ANC class
and I thought it would be the best way for
me to serve my community as well. I was
elected twice to be an ANC commissioner.

Blade: You and your two main

opponents have each said that you
strongly support LGBT equality and LGBT
rights and you have a record on some of
those issues. What would you say to an
LGBT resident about why they should
vote for you and not the other two?
Bowser: Well Ive been as you know well
regarded across the city for supporting the
LGBT community and have done so from a
leadership position from my Council seat.
I was very proud to cast a vote in support
of marriage equality and make sure that
were opening up all of our institutions for
people in the LGBT community.
Whats also important now is whats
next. A lot of people have worked long
and hard to get us to this point. And I
want to especially acknowledge the GLAA
[Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance] and
the Stein Democrats who really made
sure that we had marriage equality in this
city. And you know how because they
made it a prerequisite to get elected, to
have people who were fairness based
and would move and advance the ball in
the District of Columbia.

Courtney Snowden endorsed
by Washington Post
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
D.C. Council candidate Courtney
Snowden disclosed on Monday that a rival
candidate appears to have commissioned
a so-called push poll that has been
asking city residents if her status as a
lesbian would be a factor in whether or
not they would vote for her.
Snowden is an executive for a
prominent D.C. government aairs
rm and former sta member to U.S.
Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) prior to
Baldwins election to the Senate. Shes
running as an independent in a hotly
contested 15-candidate race for one of
two at-large seats on the Council up for
election on Nov. 4.
News of the push poll, which she and
her supporters are calling an attempt at
gay-baiting, came on the same day that
the Washington Post announced it has
endorsed her and fellow independent
candidate Robert White for the two
Council seats.
Well, the secret that was never a secret
is out, Snowden said in a campaign
fundraising letter responding to the
anonymous telephone poll.
Yes, I am a sixth generation
Washingtonian, yes, I was born in Ward
4, yes, I reside in Ward 7, yes, I am a
graduate of D.C. Public Schools, yes I am
a single mom, and yes, I am a lesbian,
Snowden said in the letter sent via email.
Snowden said she learned about the
poll from supporters who told her they
talked to people who were contacted by
phone to take the poll mostly in Wards 5,
7 and 8.The supporters reported that the
poll was automated and used a recorded
message rather than a live person to
ask those reached by phone to push a
number to answer several questions
about Snowdens candidacy.
Chanelle Blackwell, communications
director for the Robert White campaign,
told the Blade that supporters of White
have also reported they heard about or
were contacted to take the automated poll.
Were not sure who commissioned the
poll or even sponsored it, Blackwell said.
The only candidate known to have
commissioned a poll in the crowded
race is Elissa Silverman, an independent
who received strong support from LGBT
activists when she ran unsuccessfully for
the seat as a Democrat two years ago.
The poll she commissioned was
conducted by Public Policy Polling, a
reputable polling rm, in the second
week of September. It showed incumbent
Council member Anita Bonds (D-At-Large)
far ahead, with 25.6 percent support from
those reached by phone. The poll showed
Silverman in second place with 17.5 percent
and White in third place with 7.5 percent.
Snowden nished in fth place with
6 percent, with 26 percent of the 768
likely voters contacted saying they were
undecided.
Jim Williams, a polling analyst for Public
Policy Polling, told the Blade on Monday that
the poll he conducted that was commissioned
by Silverman did not ask questions about
Snowdens sexual orientation.
That question was not asked by us,
he said. Youre not the rst one to ask us
that question.
Snowdens supporters have said
they believe undecided voters are now
breaking for her more than a month
after Silvermans poll was conducted
Sept. 12-14.
News of this poll is very troubling,
said Angela Peoples, president of the
Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, which
has endorsed Snowden and Bonds for
the two seats.
Under the citys election law, the two
candidates with the highest vote counts
are declared the winners of the two seats.
A Democratic candidate is eligible for only
one of the two seats under the election law.
The District of Columbia has come a
long way since the days when someones
sexual orientation or gender identity
disqualied them in the eyes of voters,
Peoples told the Blade. Disgusting
and cynical politicians willing to throw
our community under the bus with a
gay-baiting poll shows just how vitally
important it is that our community
continue to have a voice on the D.C.
Council to protect those gains.
Peoples was referring to the fact that
should Snowden lose her race for the
at-large Council seat, the Council would
be without an openly gay member for
the rst time in 17 years when its next
session begins in January 2015.
Council member David Catania (I-At-
Large), the rst out gay to win election to
the Council in 1997, is giving up his seat to
run for mayor. Gay D.C. Council member
Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who won election
to the Council in 1998, lost his re-election
bid in the April 1 Democratic primary.
Snowden received a +10 rating, the
highest possible score on LGBT-related
issues, from the Gay and Lesbian
Activists Alliance. She also received the
endorsement of the Gay and Lesbian
Victory Fund, which has helped her raise
funds for her campaign.
However, the latest lings with the O ce
of Campaign Finance show Snowden is
trailing White and several other candidates
in money raised as of Oct. 10.
In its editorial endorsing Snowden, the
Post said that while it respects Bonds for
her work on the Council, Snowden and
White have more to oer this year.
Ms. Snowden grew up in Ward 4, lives
in Ward 7, works in Ward 2 and has a keen
understanding of the need to connect
neighborhoods if the city is to thrive, the
Post said. She understands policy, is adept
at building coalitions and is both smart and
passionate about education reform.
All 15 candidates running in the race,
including gay Republican Marc Morgan,
have expressed support for LGBT
equality. GLAAs ratings, which are on a
scale of -10 to +10, ranged from the +10
it gave to Snowden to a 0 for candidates
that failed to return a questionnaire.
The group has said that although nearly
all candidates running for public o ce in
D.C. express general support for LGBT
rights, it gives higher ratings to candidates
that show a depth of understanding
on a wide range of LGBT-related issues
through their questionnaire responses.
In the at-large Council race, GLAA gave
Silverman a +8 rating and assigned a
rating of +7.5 for Bonds and White.
The remaining candidates received
the following GLAA ratings: Graylan Scot
Hagler (I), +9; Kishan Putta (I), +6; Brian Hart
(I), +5; Khalid Pitts (I), +5; Eugene Puryear
(Statehood-Green), +4.5; Wendell Felder (I),
+3; Michael D. Brown (I), +2; Marc Morgan
(R), +2; Calvin Gurley (I), +1; Frederick
Steiner (Libertarian), 0; Eric Jones, 0.
GLAA says Steiner and Jones did not
return the questionnaire, resulting in their
getting an automatic 0 rating because their
positions and record on LGBT issues are
unknown. Morgan also did not return the
questionnaire, according to GLAA, but his
record of support on some LGBT-related
issues led to his receiving a +2 rating.

For twelve elections, weve sent the same person to Congress with the
same results. What makes us think the thirteenth time will be different?
We need to harness the recent energy on Statehood, and not let it waste
away as we have in the past. We just celebrated our frst Congressional
hearing in twenty years; however, we need to ask ourselves WHYit was
the frst one in twenty years? We must ensure we grow the movement in
a cohesive and comprehensive fashion instead of lurching from reaction
to reaction.
Apart from Statehood, no other city in America has a closer relationship
with the federal government than DC does. Without a responsive and
engaged Delegate, how can we expect the feds to be good neighbors?
Washington, DC is changing. We need sustained engagement and
creative problem solving to protect long-term residents. At the same
time, we need to be able to ensure that DC remains affordable to new
residents, so we dont lose the energy and vitality that contributes to our
growth. To make that happen, we need close and effective representation
in Congress.
Our current Delegate has taken us as far as she can. Its time for new

Six gay men, two
lesbians on D.C. ballot
in Tuesdays election
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Attorney General candidate Lateefah
Williams, an out lesbian, and Ward 1 D.C.
State Board of Education candidates Scott
Simpson and David Do, both of whom are
gay, were putting the nal touches on
their campaigns this week ahead of the
Nov. 4 D.C. election.
Williams, Simpson and Do are among a
total of eight openly gay or lesbian candidates
on the citys election ballot on Tuesday.
With gay mayoral candidate David
Catania and at-large City Council
candidate Courtney Snowden, a lesbian,
capturing more attention in the LGBT
community than the other gay candidates,
activists following these races have said
its unclear how the LGBT vote will break
down in the election.
Williams, an attorney who has
spent most of her career representing
grassroots, community-oriented clients,
is running against four other attorneys
who have worked mostly with law rms
and have engaged in more court-related
litigation than Williams.
This year marks the rst time voters
will elect the citys attorney general, who
represents the city in litigation and serves
as prosecutor for criminal cases involving
juveniles. Up until now, the attorney general
has been appointed by the D.C. mayor.
I am undeniably a grassroots activist,
Williams said in an Oct. 24 commentary
in the Washington Blade. In fact, Im
so identied with my work on behalf of
LGBT rights, labor rights, and other social
justice issues, that many people have
erroneously assumed that I do not have
traditional legal experience.
Williams points out that she has been
licensed to practice law for 11 years and
has worked for several years on litigation
with two small law rms representing
dozens of clients on a variety of legal
matters, including family law, insurance
defense and personal injury.
Each of her four opponents Karl Racine,
Edward Smitty Smith, Paul Zukerberg,
and Lorie Masters has expressed strong
support for LGBT rights during campaign
events. Racine, Smith, and Masters have
worked for large, prominent law rms
in the city. Zukerberg, an outspoken
advocate for legalizing marijuana, heads
his own small law rm that has specialized
in public interest law.
Racine, the citys rst African American
to be named head of a large law rm, is
considered the front runner in the race
and has raised the most money for his
campaign more than $666,000 as of the
Oct. 10 campaign nance reporting period.
Finance records show he has loaned
more than $400,000 to his campaign.
Masters raised just under $300,000 as
of the Oct. 10 reporting period, with
Smith closely behind her with $296,000.
Zukerberg has raised $110,468 during the
same period, with Williams trailing the
pack in money raised with $21,496.
Williams acknowledges she has an
uphill battle in the election but says her
strong grassroots advocacy background
sets her apart from the other candidates.
She says she remains hopeful that voters
will choose her as the more people-
oriented attorney general.
In the Ward 1 school board race,
Simpson and Do are among ve
candidates competing for the seat.
Simpson works as press secretary
for the Leadership Conference on Civil
and Human Rights, the nations largest
civil rights coalition. Its president and
CEO, longtime civil rights leader Wade
Henderson, has personally endorsed
Simpson in the school board race,
saying Simpson has proven to have the
substance, skills and vision to help our
schools meet their challenge of providing
quality education to every student.
Simpson began his career in D.C.
working with students involved with the
local LGBT youth advocacy group SMYAL.
He has also been endorsed by Ward 2
school board member Jack Jacobson, who
became the rst out gay to win election to
the school board two years ago.
Do is a former D.C. government o cial
whos currently serving as a teaching assistant
and graduate student at the University of
Maryland. As the son of an immigrant family
from Vietnam, Do has said, among other
things, he would push for school policies
supportive of the large number of immigrant
children living in Ward 1.
Another candidate running in the race is
Laura Wilson Phelan, a former middle school
teacher and current o cial with a non-prot
group that helps teachers engage families
in D.C. public schools, according to a write-
up on her campaign website.
Also running are longtime Ward 1
public school and Latino community
advocate Lillian Perdomo and Ward 1
community and education advocate E.
Gail Anderson Holness.
Records from the o ce of campaign
nance show Phelan leading in
fundraising, with $38,338 as of the Oct.
10 reporting period. Simpson was close
behind her with $34,485 raised as of
Oct. 10. Do came in third in campaign
fundraising, with $16,165 during the same
reporting period. Perdomo and Holness
were trailing the pack with $4,583 and
$1,175 respectively.
Among the lesser-known gay
candidates on the ballot in Tuesdays
election is gay activist Bruce Majors, whos
running for mayor as a Libertarian Party
candidate. Majors has acknowledged that
one of his goals as a candidate is to draw
attention to Libertarian principles, which
he says would be of benet to the LGBT
community and the city as a whole.
But with those principles often at
odds with the agenda of the citys LGBT
rights groups, Majors received only a +2
rating from the Gay and Lesbian Activists
Alliance on LGBT issues. GLAA gave fellow
lesser-known mayoral candidate Faith, a
former Broadway entertainer who plays
the trumpet at campaign appearances, a
+3.5 rating. GLAA rates candidates on a
scale of -10 to +10.
Majors and his supporters have
expressed concern that organizers of
the four main mayoral debates, which
included two local TV stations, have
barred Majors from participating in the
debates. The organizations have said
they chose not to include Majors and two
other lesser-known mayoral contenders
in the debates based on a policy requiring
candidates to reach a certain threshold
in campaign fundraising that would
establish them as serious candidates.
Campaign nance records show Majors
raised $7,389 for his campaign as of Oct.
10 compared to the more than $1 million
raised by mayoral candidate Muriel Bowser.
The remaining two out gay candidates
on the D.C. ballot are Marc Morgan, the
Republican Party nominee running for
one of the two at-large D.C. Council seats;
and Martin Moulton, a Libertarian Party
candidate running for the shadow U.S.
Representative seat.
Morgan and lesbian contender Snowden
are among 15 candidates running for
the two at-large seats. Campaign nance
records show Snowden has raised
$56,396, which includes an $11,000
personal loan to her campaign, as of the
Oct. 10 reporting period. Morgan raised
$19,116 as of the same reporting period.
At least 16 out gay or lesbian candidates
are running for seats on the citys Advisory
Neighborhood Commissions, according
to John Klenert, a D.C. representative for
the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, which
monitors LGBT candidates running for
public o ce throughout the country.
Blade to receive
Making D.C. History award
The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. will present its annual Making
D.C. History Award for the category of Local Media to the Washington Blade
at a ceremony on Nov. 5 at its headquarters in the Carnegie Library Building in
downtown Washington.
The Making D.C. History Awards supports our mission by honoring the people
and places that have helped create, dene, and preserve our citys heritage, the
historical society said in a statement.
Also receiving the award at the Nov. 5 ceremony will be the Morris & Gwendolyn
Cafritz Foundation, the largest private, independent local foundation focused
exclusively on the D.C. metropolitan area, according to the statement.
The Washington Blade is the nations rst and most acclaimed LGBT
newspaper, founded in 1969 and dubbed the newspaper of record for the LGBT
community by the New York Times, the HSW statement says.
Over the decades, the Blade has won dozens of local and national awards for
its groundbreaking journalism, it says. Last year, the Blade became the rst
alternative press outlet admitted to the prestigious White House pool rotation.
This year, the NEWSEUM accepted a rst-of-its-kind donation from the Blade of
historic editions and other memorabilia.
Were grateful that the Historical Society is honoring the Blades long record
of contributions to the city, said Blade publisher Lynne Brown. For many years,
our sta worked hard without such accolades and its gratifying the work of so
many hard-working media professionals is being celebrated.
In selecting the Cafritz Foundation for the award in its Local Foundation
category, the historical society points out that the foundation in the last 10
years has awarded $190 million to more than 890 organizations in the areas of
Community Services, Arts and Humanities, Education, Health and Environment.

Gay candidates make nal push for votes
Underhill says she
disagrees with Putins
policies on gays
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

A candidate running unopposed for
a seat on the Dupont Circle Advisory
Neighborhood Commission worked as a
producer from 2012 to January 2014 for RT
America, a television news network owned
by the Russian government that critics say
has defended Russias anti-gay policies.
Justine Underhill, whos running for the
ANC seat being vacated by incumbent Leo
Dwyer, said she specialized in covering
U.S. nancial news and never reported
on Russia itself.
That is totally a legitimate concern,
Underhill said in commenting on
questions LGBT voters might have about
her work for a Russian news agency.
RT America is technically a separate
branch, she said. So its all focused on U.S.
news within the U.S. and I was not working
on any of the other areas besides nance.
Underhill, a D.C. native, said she took
the job at RTs Washington bureau shortly
after graduating from Georgetown
University, saying it gave her an
opportunity to gain experience in the TV
news business at an early age.
Among the strongest critics of RT, which
was formerly known as Russia Today,
is Masha Gessen, a Russian American
journalist and LGBT rights advocate.
Gessen spoke out against Russias policies
on LGBT people while living in Moscow.
She and her two sons moved from
Moscow to New York last December after
she felt threatened by a law proposed by a
member of the Russian parliament calling
for the government to take children away
from gay and lesbian parents.
The proposed law followed a separate
law passed by the parliament, or Duma, and
signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin
in June 2013 that calls for banning so-called
gay propaganda directed toward minors.
LGBT activists in Russia have said the law
has been used by authorities to persecute
gays and has resulted in the arrest of
LGBT advocates for engaging in peaceful
protestsand attendingLGBT Pride events.
In a Washington Post guest column
published in July of this year, Gessen
called RT reporters mouthpieces for the
Kremlins propaganda channel.
Noting that Russia Today was founded
in 2006, Gessen said, The Kremlin
wanted an outlet to counter a growing
wave of criticism as it fully reverted
to authoritarianism Native English
speakers were essential to the project.
Underhill said she and many of her
fellow RT journalists in the Washington
bureau were given the leeway to cover U.S.
developments, including the June 2013 U.S.
Supreme Court decision overturning the
Defense of Marriage Act, without censorship.
She said several key news producers
and reporters in the RT Washington
bureau are gay and are among those
who pushed to cover the Supreme Court
decision clearing the way for marriage
equality across the U.S.
So I would say that at least for RT
America there is a lot more exibility in
terms of coverage, she said. And there
are people working from the inside to
change the aspects of what RT America
covers and how its covered.
She said most of the stories she worked
on involved problems associated with
the U.S. nance industry, including the
wrongdoings of the big banks and all the
evil practices of Wall Street along with
the Occupy Wall Street protests.

Acclaimed Kennedy Center musician dies at 52
Donald Shore battled brain cancer
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Donald A. Shore, a nationally acclaimed bassoon player with the Kennedy
Center Opera House Orchestra for 30 years and a supporter of charitable events
for D.C.s gay community, died Oct. 9 at his home in Washington following a
hard-fought battle with brain cancer. He was 52.
During his long tenure with the Kennedy Center opera orchestra, for which
he held the title of Principal Bassoon, Shore collaborated with luminaries of the
opera world, including Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Kiri te Kanawa, and
Denyce Graves, according to his friend and colleague, bassoonist Chris Jewell.
In a biographical write-up, Jewell said Shore also worked with some of the
worlds most prestigious ballet companies, including the Bolshoi, Kirov, Paris,
Jorey and Royal Ballets in the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestras dual
role of playing for ballet performances.
In addition, he played during performances of the American Ballet Theater
and the Dance Theater of Harlem, Jewell said.
As a member of the orchestra he performed at the White House, toured
Japan, and played for the Kennedy Center Honors as well as numerous musicals and chamber music performances on the
Kennedy Centers Millennium Stage, Jewell said in his write-up.
Jewell said Shores playing spanned both classical and popular music, ranging from the orchestras performance of the
Mozart Sinfonia Concertante under the direction of Maestro Heinz Fricke to a solo performance in a routine with comedian
Steve Martin at New Yorks Carnegie Hall.
A lifelong resident of the D.C. area, Shore was born Nov. 30, 1961 to Kitty Murray Shore and Francis Marion Shore Jr. He was
a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and studied with National Symphony Orchestra bassoonist Linda Harwell,
Jewell said in his write-up.
Shore attended the University of Maryland and the Peabody Conservatory before transferring to the University of Toronto,
where he studied bassoon and received a bachelor of music degree, according to Jewell.
He became recognized as an up-and-coming star bassoonist in 1984 when he was chosen as a winner of the National
Symphony Orchestras Young Soloists Competition. That same year Shore won his position in the Kennedy Center Opera
House Orchestra at the age of 23.
In addition to his skills as a bassoonist Shore was also a talented vocalist and pianist, Jewell said.
Friends said Shore was involved in D.C.s gay leather community and contributed regularly to charitable fundraisers
organized by local leather groups such as the annual Dusty Cunningham Picnic Basket Auction. He also enjoyed attending
leather events in other cities, including New York, Montreal, New Orleans and Chicago.
Jewell said Shores favorite time of the year was Christmas, when he loved to decorate a live tree usually the tallest one
he could nd.
Donald Shore touched many people deeply with his kindness, generosity, superb and bawdy wit, and unparalleled
Musicianship, Jewell said in his write-up.
I am very sad about the news that Donald Shore has passed away, said Placido Domingo in a statement.
Domingo served from 1996 to 2011 as artistic director and later general director of the Washington National Opera.
Our principal bassoonist was a great artist with whom I talked very often during our rehearsals and performances,
Domingo said. I remember being told some months ago about his operations and, now to learn that he has lost his battle.
Please convey to his family and to the orchestra my sincerest condolences for this terrible loss.
Survivors include his companions of nine years, David Peier and Arnold Mixon, of Washington; close friends Chris Jewell of
Burke, Va., and Richard Thibadeau of Washington; two brothers, Tony Shore of Chevy Chase, Md., and Francis Shore III of Fort
Myers, Fla.; and two sisters, Lynne Grace of Eastbourne, England; and KC Shore.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Kennedy Center Atrium, roof-level Terrace Gallery, on Monday at 7 p.m.

Oers no apology
for signing DOMA,
Dont Ask, Dont Tell
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Bill Clinton during his rst inaugural
address in 1993 called for the renewal
of the country through bold action of
American citizens. On Saturday night,
more than 20 years later, he told LGBT
advocates they played a part in making
the country a more perfect union.
Delivering the keynote address at the 18th
annual Human Rights Campaign dinner in
D.C., Clinton thanked the more than 3,000
attendees for the poetry and prose of
LGBT activism that he said helped reshape
the country in accordance with its ideals.
We can no longer live with being
against somebody, or a group of
somebodies just because of who they
are, Clinton said. You should be happy
and proud about that; youve got a lot
to celebrate. Ive never seen a civil rights
movement, at least in our country, move
as far and as fast as your movement.
But Clinton cautioned the audience not
to kid yourself because work remains
for people left out and left behind, and
there are still some barriers that need to
be brought down.
All over the world, there are young
people who still have to cower in fear of
their governments, their leaders and
sometimes their families, Clinton said.
Clinton also suggested more progress
would be made based on the success
that coming out as LGBT has already
accomplished for the movement.
One thing we have learned is that no
human heart is immune to an honest
outreach, Clinton said. No one can
forever ignore their personal experience.
As an example of how knowing gay
people can aect someone on a personal
level, Clinton talked about recently
attending his 50th high school reunion.
The former president spoke of three gay
friends from childhood who are deceased,
and an old male friend at the event proudly
introduced his husband of 35 years.
Weve got to humanize these stories,
Clinton said. Theres still enough of a
storytelling culture left in the South to
make a dierence.
Its not the rst time Clinton has spoken
at the national HRC dinner. The former
president delivered the keynote address in
1997 after he won his second term in o ce.
Reecting on the changes in the
perception of the LGBT community since
that time, Clinton said during his speech
17 years ago he asked LGBT people who
worked for the federal government to rise
from their seats, saying their willingness
to do so was remarkable. Now, Clinton
said, what would be unusual is if anybody
noticed, and thats a good thing.
Making another reference to the
change in attitudes from 17 years ago,
Clinton recalled his nomination of out
lesbian Roberta Achtenberg as assistant
secretary for the Department of Housing
& Urban Development.
After the hearing, she knew she was
on television and kissed her partner and
you would have thought somebody had
set o reworks in the Capitol building,
Clinton said. Now, if she had a hearing
and didnt kiss her partner, youd think
she was cold-blooded.
Richard Socarides, a gay New York
Democratic activist who worked as an
adviser to Clinton, attended the dinner
and said the speech from his old boss
was heartfelt and moving.
He still has a unique ability to talk about
how we are all the same in a way that I think
really resonates, Socarides said. That
we should come to appreciate the things
that unite us, not that divide us. Plus he
appreciates how much more work we have
to do and I think that really came through.
Clinton was introduced by HRC
President Chad Gri n, who at age 19
worked for the president as the youngest-
ever member of a presidential sta.
Following Clintons speech, the former
president and his former staer embraced
onstage as the audience applauded.
Since the last Human Rights Campaign
national dinner one year ago, the landscape
of LGBT rights, particularly marriage
equality, has changed signicantly.
At the time of 17th national dinner
on Oct. 25, 2013, only 14 states and D.C.
allowed same-sex marriages. When the
evening started for the 18th national
dinner, 32 states had legalized gay nuptials.
In his speech introducing Clinton,
Gri n predicted marriage equality would
spread nationwide to all 50 states not in
a matter of decades, not even in a matter
of years, but as soon as a few short
months from tonight.
Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa on Foxs
The Simpsons, was an honored guest at
the dinner and told the Washington Blade
the advancement of LGBT rights was due
to Gri ns work.
Its extraordinary, Smith said. I think
the dominoes are falling so fast. And
nobody ever though it could happen that
quickly, but Chad could get it done. Its
very impressive.
Clinton also endorsed initiatives that
HRC has undertaken under Gri ns
tenure, such as the Project One America
campaign to advance LGBT rights in
the South, and work to advance LGBT
rights overseas, which Clinton called
profoundly important.
There are people who lost their battle
to hold you back in the United States who
think they can take the show on the road
and win somewhere else, Clinton said.
Although Clinton billed himself as
a champion of LGBT rights during his
administration, advocating for hate crimes
protections and the Employment Non-
Discrimination Act, he also was responsible
for signing into law Dont Ask, Dont Tell
and the Defense of Marriage Act.
After his presidency came to an end,
Clinton came out in opposition to both
laws. In an op-ed for the Washington
Post just before the Supreme Court
ruled against DOMA, Clinton wrote the
law should be declared unconstitutional.
But the former president has never
apologized for signing those anti-gay
measures into law, nor did he issue an
apology Saturday night.
The LGBT grassroots group GetEQUAL
said in a statement at the time of the
speech that Bll Clintons appearance at
the dinner for the nations largest LGBT
group was ironic because the former
president hasnt apologized for those
laws, which took decades to undo.
Clinton didnt talk about Dont Ask,
Dont Tell during his speech, and he only
made a passing reference to DOMA in
which he suggested the law had a positive
eect, enabling the Supreme Court to
issue a ruling that led to a rash of court
decisions determining state bans on
same-sex marriage are unconstitutional.
Somebody gured out, Hey we got to
take this decision and run with it as far as
we can go, Clinton said.
Despite speculation Clinton may have
been joined onstage by former Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton, a favorite of the
LGBT community, she didnt make an
appearance at the dinner.
But that didnt stop Clinton from
alluding to his wifes potential 2016
presidential campaign by joking about the
shared initials of Hillary Rodham Clinton
and the nations largest LGBT group.
I wanted to talked about the work
ahead, and I kind of wanted to ask you
what you think the HRC means, Clinton
said. I love the HRC; the initials great.
In a statement, GetEQUAL said it
rallied outside the HRC dinner to deliver
a message to the Ready for Hillary
campaign to seek clarity on where
Hillary Clinton stands as she considers a
presidential run.
Heather Cronk, co-director of
GetEQUAL, said the action was intended
to send a signal that Clinton must stand
for progressive values as a champion
and leader, not simply as a middle-of-the-
road political candidate.
But the mood inside the dinner was
decidedly dierent; Bill Clinton was
received with a warm welcome. Attendees
greeted him as he approached the stage
with a sustained, standing ovation, and
continued to hoot and holler as he spoke.

Mid-terms could
bring rst elected
openly gay governor
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The mid-term elections feature highly
competitive races that will be nail-biters
on election night, and among them are
key contests of special interest to the
LGBT community.
When the polls close on Tuesday, the
results could include the rst openly
gay person to be elected to the o ce of
governor, the rst non-incumbent openly
gay Republicans to win seats in the U.S.
House and a shift in power in Congress that
could aect the ow of pro-LGBT legislation.
Heres a breakdown of races to watch
when sifting through the results on
election night.
In Maine, Rep. Mike Michaud could
become the rst openly gay person to
win election to the o ce of governor.
Michaud, who came out as gay last year,
has taken pro-LGBT positions during his
12 years in Congress, such as voting for
Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal and against
a Federal Marriage Amendment. (He also
voted against a version of the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act because it didnt
includetransgender protections.)
Polls show a close race between
Michaud and incumbent Republican Gov.
Paul LePage, a Tea Party politician whom
Politico called the craziest governor in the
country, with independent candidate Eliot
Cutler taking about 10 percent of the vote.
The most crucial outcome on election
night on both the national stage and for
LGBT people is control of the U.S. Senate.
Republicans, who must pick up six
seats to win control of the chamber, are
virtually certain to pick up open seats
formerly held by Democrats in West
Virginia, Montana and South Dakota. That
means the party needs only to pick up
three more seats.
Incumbent Democrats running in
Arkansas, Louisiana, Alaska and Colorado
are in competitive races, but have been
consistently behind in the polls, including
lawmakers with pro-LGBT records like
Sens. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Mark
Udall (D-Colo.). The open seat in Iowa also
seems tilted toward the Republicans. Sen.
Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Kay Hagan
(D-N.C.) are in competitive races, but have
fared better in polls.
Republican control of both the House
and Senate will likely have an impact on
legislation aecting LGBT people. Although
passage of a Federal Marriage Amendment
is unlikely, federal legislation enabling
discrimination against LGBT people based
on religious grounds could emerge.
Amid the expected GOP wave
on election night, two congressional
candidates could make history by being
the rst non-incumbent gay Republicans
to win election to the U.S. House.
In Massachusetts, Richard Tisei, a
former Republican leader in the Senate,
is running in the 6th congressional
district against Democratic candidate
Seth Moulton. In California, Carl DeMaio,
a former San Diego council member, is
in a highly competitive race in the 52nd
congressional district against Rep. Scott
Peters (D-Calif.).
But both candidates have faced criticism
from LGBT advocates for planning to vote
for Republican leadership upon election
to the U.S. House. Many have urged
support for their Democratic opponents.
In Massachusetts, two openly gay
candidates are on the ballot for senior-
level positions in the state government.
Steve Kerrigan is seeking to become the
states next lieutenant governor. Prior to his
bid, he served as a staer for Democratic
o cials, including the late Sen. Edward
Kennedy (D-Mass.), and was CEO of the
2012 Democratic National Convention.
The favorite to become the states next
attorney general is Maura Healy. In her
current role as the states assistant attorney,
she helped with litigation against the
Defense of Marriage Act and represented
the state in oral arguments before the U.S.
First Circuit Court of Appeals.
One local race in D.C. that has
implications on the national stage is
the contest to be the next mayor of the
nations capital. D.C. council member
David Catania, an independent who
helped lead the eort to legalize marriage
equality in the District, is running.
Despite LGBT support for Catania, a
number of LGBT people in D.C. continue
to support Democratic candidate Muriel
Bowser, another D.C. Council member
whos leading him in the polls. Also on
the ballot is former D.C. Council member
Carol Schwartz, an independent and
strong LGBT ally.
Across the country, another gay
candidate running for mayor is Rebecca
Kaplan, a lesbian member of the City
Council of Oakland, Calif. Shes in a
crowded eld of candidates seeking to
become mayor there.
Also on the ballot are high-prole
openly gay Democrats seeking to unseat
incumbent Republicans from the U.S.
House. Gay American Idol alum Clay
Aiken is running in North Carolinas 2nd
congressional district against Rep. Renee
Ellmers (R-N.C.), although the odds are
against him in the Republican district.
Sean Eldridge, an investor who married
Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, is
running against incumbent Rep. Chris
Gibson (R-N.Y.) in New Yorks 19th
congressional district. The race is thought
to be competitive, but Eldridge has been
accused of carpetbagging. He invoked the
ire of the media for avoiding interviews
and is running against a Republican who
co-sponsors ENDA.
Another gay Democrat on the ballot is
Louie Minor, a gay Army veteran whos
facing an uphill battle in Texas 31st
congressional district to unseat Rep. John
Carter (R).
A Nevada Republican, Lauren Scott,
could make history on Tuesday by being
the rst openly transgender person to win
election and be seated in a state legislature.
Scott, a veteran of the rst Persian Gulf
War, is, however, facing an uphill battle
in Nevada Assembly District 30, a heavily
Democratic jurisdiction that includes parts
of Reno, against incumbent pro-LGBT
Assembly member Michael Sprinkle.
Other openly LGBT candidates seeking
election to state legislatures are Catherine
Begaye, a Navajo who could be the rst
openly bisexual person elected to the
New Mexico Legislature; James D. Ford,
a gay candidate for Indiana State Senate;
and Kyle Thorson, a gay candidate for the
North Dakota State House.
In addition to newcomer gay
candidates seeking election to Congress,
two of the incumbent openly LGB
U.S. House members are facing sti
competition to retain their seats.
Gay Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.),
is fending o a challenge in New Yorks 18th
congressional district from Nan Hayworth,
a Tea Party Republican whom he unseated
in 2012. She has a gay son, Will Hayworth,
and has cast pro-LGBT votes during her
one term in Congress, but isnt considered
a supporter of marriage equality.
Bisexual Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.)
is facing a challenge in Arizonas 9th
congressional district from Wendy
Rogers, a retired Air Force colonel and
small business owner.
Eyes will also be on pro-LGBT Republicans
on election night to see how well they fare.
Among them is Rep. Mike Coman (R-Colo.),
a co-sponsor of ENDA whos in a close race in
Colorados 6th congressional district against
Democrat Andrew Romano. Coman is
backed by the pro-LGBT American Unity
Fund, but critics point to his lack of support
for marriage equality and recent vote
against an amendment for spousal benets
to gay veterans.
Another GOP candidate backed by the
American Unity Fund is Carlos Cubelo,
whos seeking to unseat pro-LGBT Rep.
Joe Garcia (D-Fla.), and Robert Dold, whos
running against pro-LGBT Rep. Brad
Schneider (D-Ill.).

Nearly 500 advocates arrive
amid outrage over 43
missing college students
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
MEXICO CITY A global LGBT rights
conference that formally opened on
Tuesday in the Mexican capital has drawn
hundreds of advocates from 50 countries.
International Gay and Lesbian Human
Rights Commission Executive Director
Jessica Stern, Ty Cobb of the Human Rights
Campaign, Council for Global Equality
Chair Mark Bromley and Chloe Schwenke
of the D.C.-based Freedom House are
among the nearly 500 people who are
attending the International Lesbian Gay
Bisexual Trans and Intersex Association
(ILGA) World Conference in Mexico City.
Mariela Castro Espn, daughter of Cuban
President Ral Castro, is also in the
Mexican capital with a delegation of more
than a dozen LGBT rights advocates from
the Communist country.
ILGA is a way to connect with other
LGBTI activists from all over the world,
Basu Guragain of the Federation of
Sexual and Gender Minorities Nepal told
the Washington Blade. We can get an
idea about what is going on around the
world regarding LGBTI rights.
Tamara Adrin, a Venezuelan trans
advocate who is running for ILGA co-
secretary general, said two of her goals
during the conference are to connect with
younger trans activists and to enforce
connections between activists in dierent
regions of the world.
Caleb Orozco, co-founder of the United
Belize Advocacy Movement, an HIV/AIDS
advocacy group, told the Blade he hopes
the gathering will allow him to highlight
U.S. religious organizations that support
eorts defending the English-speaking
Central American countrys anti-sodomy
law. Orozco added the conference
also provides an opportunity to raise
awareness of eorts to extend rights to
LGBT people in Belize and throughout the
Western Hemisphere.
The meeting space is about an
opportunity to build alliances and share
experiences, he said.
The Cuban delegation later this week is
expected to formally announce it will seek
to host the 2016 ILGA World Conference
in their country.
Supporters of Mariela Castro, who is
director of Cubas National Center for Sex
Education, are quick to note that she has
spearheaded a number of eorts over
the last decade to promote acceptance
of LGBT Cubans and to curb the spread
of HIV/AIDS on the island. These include
a condom distribution campaign and the
countrys national health care system
oering free sex-reassignment surgery to
trans Cubans.
Mariela Castro was also president of
the local committee that organized an
ILGA conference on the island in May that
LGBT rights advocates from Latin America
and the Caribbean attended.
Cuban-born Florida Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is among those who
frequently criticize Mariela Castro and
her fathers government over its human
rights record.
ILGA Co-Secretary General Gloria
Careaga Prez told the Blade on Tuesday
she feels it would be great for Cuba to
host her organizations biennial global
conference in 2016.
Cuba is making very important
changes and they want to go forward,
she said, noting eorts to add sexual
orientation to the countrys labor law and
the governments work with families on
LGBT-specic issues. They have really
interesting proposals that we (in Mexico)
havent worked with.
A boost for Mexican
LGBT activists
The conference is taking place against
the backdrop of lingering global outrage
over Ugandas Anti-Homosexuality Act
and other anti-LGBT laws that have taken
eect in Nigeria and several other nations
over the last year. Russias LGBT rights
record that includes a law banning the
promotion of so-called gay propaganda
to minors overshadowed the 2014 Winter
Olympics that took place earlier this year
in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi.
Homosexuality remains criminalized
in more than 70 countries around the
world. Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan
and Iran are among the nations in which
those found guilty of consensual same-
sex sexual acts face the death penalty.
Same-sex couples have been able to
legally marry and adopt children in Mexico
City since 2010. The Mexican capitals
comprehensive anti-discrimination law
includes both sexual orientation and
gender identity and expression.
This is an open city, a gay-friendly city,
Careaga told the Blade.
She said the Mexican capitals pro-
LGBT laws and initiatives are among the
reasons ILGA decided to hold its biennial
global conference in the city. Careaga
said she feels Mexico City o cials can do
even more to advance these issues.
We still have not seen as many public
policies as we would like to see, she said,
noting the discussions around public
policy and other issues that took place
before the conference o cially began.
We want to push our government
and specically the city to come with a
real plan of action, not only with some
wording on the legal framework.
Progress on LGBT-specic issues has
also taken place outside Mexico City and
on the national level, but at a slower pace.
Lawmakers in the state of Coahuila last
month overwhelmingly approved a same-
sex marriage bill.
The Mexican Supreme Court in recent
years has struck down gay nuptials bans
in Baja California and Oaxaca. Same-sex
couples in Colima, Quintana Roo and
other Mexican states have also sought
legal recourse through the countrys
judicial system to allow them to marry.
The Mexican Supreme Court in January
ruled same-sex spouses of those who
receive benets under the countrys
social security system must receive the
same benets as their heterosexual
counterparts. A gay couple that hopes
to marry in Mexico in May led a formal
complaint with the Inter-American
Commission on Human Rights in D.C.
Benjamin Medrano in September 2013
became Mexicos rst openly gay mayor
after voters in Fresnillo in the state of
Zacatecas elected him.
Mexicos anti-discrimination law
includes sexual orientation, but
mistreatment and violence against LGBT
Mexicans remains pervasive throughout
the country.
The Committee to Protect Journalists
notes more than 70 reporters and
others who work for media outlets
have been killed in Mexico since 1992,
with drug cartels and organized crime
syndicates committing the majority of
these murders. The nationwide outrage
over last months disappearance of 43
college students in the state of Guerrero
has dominated Mexican media during the
ILGA conference.
Schwenke told the Blade on Tuesday
she feels it is di cult for Mexican LGBT
rights advocates to gain attention for
their eorts amid ongoing concerns
over the missing college students, the
persecution of journalists and other
issues in the country. She nevertheless
said she supports the decision to hold the
conference in Mexico City.
Theres a range of really pronounced
human rights issues that are not being
solved anytime soon, said Schwenke.
Its really hard for LGBTI people in that
space to get their issues taken seriously.
[The conference] has been a good boost
for them.

Columbia to get its
rst drag show
For a number of years, drag shows have
been one of the popular entertainment
features at PWs Sports Bar in North
Laurel Howard Countys only gay
bar. Many of these shows are held in
conjunction with charitable events and
causes in which PWs participates.
Now some of the drag acts will travel
up the road to Columbia where they will
perform in a straight bar named Second
Chance Saloon in the village of Oakland
Mills. When the performers hit the stage
on Nov. 8 at 10 p.m. it will mark the rst
time a public drag show takes place in the
city of Columbia.
Titled Sugar, Spice and a Little
Something Nice, the event will be hosted
by Anastacia Amor, a well-known drag
performer at PWs. Co-hosting the show
will be Shawnna Alexander. In addition,
local performers Ariyanna Myst, Onyx D
Pearl and Krystal Nova will entertain.
This is exciting because its a new
venue that has never done a drag show
and the establishment reached out to
me, Anastacia Amor told the Blade.
This is something that they are excited
for and want to embrace the community
and provide another place to enjoy a
night out. You can expect a great show,
a wonderful establishment and an all
around great time.
Jacquie Ramsey, the manager of Second
Chance Saloon and owner Declan Wood,
had seen the drag acts at PWs. We would
often go to PWs to watch the drag shows
because its always a blast, Ramsey said.
I arranged this night by knowing the
bartender at PWs. Im looking forward
to this event and I hope that we can do it
more often.
The Second Chance Saloon is located at
5888 Robert Oliver Place in Columbia.
Pop Up Gay Bar
coming to Glen Burnie
Just a few years removed from the
popular social phenomenon known as
Guerilla Gay Bar Baltimore (GGBB), a
revival has been launched. Whereas
GGBB organizers focused their invasions
of straight bars and clubs predominantly
in Baltimore City, the new edition called
Pop Up Gay Bar (PUGB) will initially
involve LGBT folks taking over straight
establishments on a given night in the
suburbs of Baltimore.
GGBB lasted about three years in
Baltimore and at its peak more than 500
people would attend a particular outing
making new friends and at the same time
lling the coers of the bar.
The rst of the PUGB events will occur
on Saturday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at
the All American Sports Bar, 1205 Crain
Highway N. in Glen Burnie. As had been
the case with GGBBs coordinators
PUGBs organizer David Jones contacted
the management of the establishment
and discussed the plan to have a sizable
contingent of LGBT folks visit the premises
of a straight bar.
Jones, who lives in Glen Burnie, told
the Blade the owner and bartenders of
the All American Sports Bar are excited to
host the PUGB. They are looking forward
to welcoming the LGBT community with
open arms and are going out of their way
to make sure we have everything we need
to make Nov. 1 a huge success, Jones said.
Jones sees additional opportunities in
the suburbs around Baltimore for future
events and has his sights on bars in
Annapolis and Columbia in the near future.
PUGB originated in the San Francisco
area. It, too, was a reinvention of the
Guerilla Queer Bar movement that had
existed there a decade ago. The website
popupgaybar.com seeks organizers
around the country to establish local
events. A form exists for folks to sign up
to receive alerts should someone start a
PUGB in their area.

Israeli gay surrogacy bill gains traction
LONDON Gay Israeli couples who want to adopt cameone step closer to doing so
in Israel this week after a surrogacy bill passed its rst reading in the Knesset, Jewish
News, a British outlet, reports.
The would-be law, which passed with a majority of 45 votes to 15, would mean the
countrys same-sex couples no longer have to go abroad to adopt, and would instead be
able to have children via surrogates in Israel, the article said.
This bill is about the principle of equality, regardless of ones sexual orientation or
the composition of the family unit, Health Minister Yael German, who rst submitted
the bill in January, was quoted as having said. Everyone has the right to become a
parent.
It was brought in part as a response to the growing number of Israelis traveling
abroad each year to use foreign surrogates, raising legal and ethical questions that
Israeli lawmakers acknowledgedthey were required to address, the article notes.
However, it has met with some opposition, with ultra right-wing nationalist Housing
Minister Uri Ariel, from the pro-settler party Jewish Home, among those appealing
against it.
Orthodox politician Moshe Gafni of United Torah Judaism was quoted as saying the
bill was meant to destroy the nature of family as we know it. Shas MK Nissim Zeev
called it a corrupt bill.
We are treating the import and export of babies as if we were dealing with frozen
meat, Jewish News quoted him as having said. The bill is morally depraved.
Trans health care provisions expanding
HARTFORD, Conn. More health insurance carriers such as Aetna, which provides
coverage to federal workers, are providing for gender reassignment surgeries in their
2015 health plans, the Hartford Courant reports.
In the past, the federal government excluded the cost of services, drugs and supplies
related to such procedures. That exclusion was removed in June, allowing health
insurers to oer plans that help trans folks who wish to have surgery do so.
There is an evolving professional consensus that treatment is considered medically
necessary for certain individuals who meet established criteria for a diagnosis of
Gender Identity Disorder/Gender Dysphoria, John OBrien, director of Healthcare and
Insurance at the U.S. O ce of Personnel Management, wrote in a June 13 bulletin to
health insurers, the Courant reports.
OBriens advisory was sent to health insurers that sell policies on the Federal
Employee Health Program, a sort of insurance exchange serving nearly 9 million federal
employees, retirees and family members. Coverage for federal employees is largely
funded by U.S. taxpayer dollars, though employees also pay a portion of premiums.
Health insurers have two options under the new federal guidelines: They can
continue to exclude coverage of gender reassignment surgery, or they can include it.
Aetna announced last week that it has decided to include it in all 33 health plans it oers
to federal employees, the Courant reports.
Baptist leader doubtful of ex-gay therapy
NASHVILLE At a conference of the Southern Baptist Convention, the second-largest
Chrisitan denomination in the country, this week, one speaker denounced reparative
therapy saying its eorts have been severely counterproductive, Hu ngton Post and
other outlets report.
The utopian idea if you come to Christ and if you go through our program, youre
going to be immediately set free from attraction or anything youre struggling with, I
dont think thats a Christian idea, said Russell Moore, president of the Conventions
Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, on Tuesday. Faithfulness to Christ means
obedience to Christ. It does not necessarily mean that someones attractions are going
to change, Hu ngton Post reports.
Moore said evangelicals had an inadequate view of what same-sex attraction looks
like.
The Bible doesnt promise us freedom from temptation, Moore was quoted as
having said. The Bible promises us the power of the spirit to walk through temptation.
Moore gave similar remarks to an audience of 1,300 people at the conference.
The same morning, the conference featured three speakers who once considered
themselves gay or lesbian. Moore joins a chorus of psychologists and religious leaders
who have departed from the once-popular therapy.
There were utopian ideas about reparative therapy that frankly werent unique to
evangelicalism, Moore said at the conference. That was something that came along in
the 1970s and 1980s about the power of psychotherapy to do all sorts of things that we
have a more nuanced views about now.
The article said that while some ex-gay groups such as Restored Hope Network still exist,
many religious leaders are now encouraging lesbian and gay believers to consider celibacy.

Modern outbreak
brings back painful
memories of HIV
By JIMMIE LUTHULI
When HIV/AIDS emerged in San Fran-
cisco in the early 1980s, it was labeled a
gay disease much like Ebola is widely be-
ing reduced to a West African or black
disease. While racism and homophobia
were present in the American social fabric
prior to the outbreaks of Ebola and HIV/
AIDS, these oppressions intensied in the
presence of illness. However, much of the
post-outbreak hysteria is unwarranted
and oppressive to entire groups of people.
This baseless and bigoted paranoia is a
reason for concern, especially when it is
espoused by community leaders. When a
marginalized group is disproportionately
aected by a new epidemic, dominant
groups tend to reject scientic informa-
tion on the manner of transmission in the
interest of further subjugating oppressed
people. This willful ignorance contributes
to the spread of disease.
The legacy of the Reagan administra-
tion and conservative political estab-
lishment of that time is one that valued
heterosexual superiority over public
health. Anyone of any sexuality can be-
come susceptible to HIV/AIDS and such
information was available at the time
when leaders chose to go down the road
of overt homophobia. Pat Buchanan,
communications director for President
Ronald Reagan, argued that AIDS was
natures revenge on gay men. Presi-
dent Reagan remained silent, in this case
implying accord. Reagans Moral Majority
opposed funding for HIV/AIDS treatment
and care. In 1987, Republican Sen. Jesse
Helms introduced a budget amendment
to ban federal spending on CDC HIV/
AIDS-related programs that discussed
homosexuality.His justication was anti-
gay. He said, We have got to call a spade
a spade, and a perverted human being a
perverted human being.
West Africans have suered the brunt
of Ebolas impact and prominent right-
wingers are reacting with prejudice rath-
er than compassion. Republican support
of travel bans from West Africa is remi-
niscent of Reagans 1987 travel ban for
individuals living with HIV/AIDS, which
was only recently struck down. Further-
more, Dinesh DSouza, a prominent con-
servative political commentator recently
linked the Ebola virus to Barack Obamas
Kenyan father in a popular racist and xe-
nophobic meme. The caption under the
image reads, Which is worse: EBOLA, the
disease; or OBOLA, the dream from his
father? Rep. David Vitter (R-La.) recently
opposed Ebola funding because it would
mean spending money on Africa.
According to Stassa Edwards, The on-
set of epidemic disease has always incit-
ed prejudice, permitting the stereotyping
of foreigners, of people of color, as inher-
ently closer to disease: more deserving
of death from it. With HIV/AIDS, initially
there was little knowledge about how it
was spread, but HIV linked homophobia
continued to thrive after transmission
method enlightenment just as Ebola
related racism ourishes in the face of
scientic evidence proving the racially
nonselective nature of the virus. West Af-
ricans in Washington, D.C., have reported
being discriminated against by strangers
and even locked out of their own homes
by their housemates. Additionally, Nige-
rian applicants to a Texas college were
explicitly rejected based on who they are.
Perpetuating racism and homophobia
at the expense of listening to medical sci-
ence can cause the public to engage in
behaviors that perpetuate the spread of
disease. Studies show that the psycho-
logical stress of homophobia can lead
people to engage in risky behaviors that
increase their risk of contracting HIV.
Similarly, virulent xenophobia may dis-
suade immigrants from seeking medical
treatment because of perceived depor-
tation risk. Individuals with internalized
homophobia may be more likely to not
use condoms. Additionally, immigrants
who have handled the bodily uids of
Ebola patients may be less likely to go to
the hospital when feeling feverish if they
are in a hostile environment. It is impera-
tive that public gures do not disparage
entire groups of people in response to
public health emergencies as doing so
can actually increase transmission rates.

JIMMIE LUTHULI is former secretary of the
Gertrude Stein Democratic Club.
The most qualied candidate
weve ever had for mayor
David Catania claims to have the most
progressive record of any candidate run-
ning for mayor. There is plenty of evi-
dence to back up his assertion.
As I have often said when talking to vot-
ers door to door and on the phone, Cata-
nia is the only candidate in the race who
is willing to take on big issues and bring
people together to solve them. He has
done this many times over.
In our overwhelmingly Democratic city,
some people continue to have trouble
moving past Catanias past as a registered
Republican. Voters need only to look at
his record in o ce to see that he is, in-
deed, far more progressive than most
Democrats around the nation. And his re-
cord of action is the most progressive of
any candidate for mayor.
Catania operates like many of the great
Democrats of our time, by taking on big
issues that no one else will. Before there
was Obamacare, there was Cataniacare.
As chair of the D.C. Councils health com-
mittee, he set out to aggressively expand
health coverage to our residents and suc-
ceeded in cutting the uninsured rate in half.
We even had, and still have, the lowest rate
of uninsured children in the nation.
When Catania set out to save the only
hospital east of the Anacostia River, it
was such a mess that no one else on the
Council would touch it. The radiology unit
was burned out. The hospital was bor-
rowing supplies. Nurses were walking
o the job, leaving patients uncared for,
because they werent getting paid. It was
a dire situation for the hospital and the
community it serves.
Now, because of Catanias sustained
eort to secure funding and work with
stakeholders, the hospital is not only fully
functional, but it is nally starting to op-
erate in the black. There is an aggressive
mammography program that aims for
early diagnoses of breast cancer. There
is a pediatric emergency room provided
through a partnership with the Childrens
National Medical Center. The hospital is
also the largest employer in Ward 8, the
ward with the highest employment rate.
If this hospital had been allowed to fail,
a mother with a sick child would have to
take four dierent buses to get to the ER
at GW Hospital.
On issue after issue integral to the
Democratic platform, Catania has been at
the forefront of the ght: marriage equal-
ity, Smoke-Free DC, medical marijuana,
cheaper prescription drugs, investing in
at-risk students and many more.
It has been shocking for me to hear
well-educated people boil this race down
to a choice between someone with a
questionable temperament and some-
one with a thin record of accomplish-
ment. That is a terribly over-simplied
snapshot of the dynamics of this race.
Should you want to boil it down to
something simple in order to decide for
whom to cast your vote on Nov. 4, I would
suggest a dierent construct: the choice
is between one candidate who isnt afraid
to take on big issues and bring people
together to solve them, and another can-
didate who is unwilling to take on those
same issues, and unable to nd collab-
orative solutions.
If you desire a D.C. government that
continues to evolve, likely more rapidly
than ever, and a mayor who will serve as
an example of cutting edge governance,
then all indicators point you to David Cat-
ania as the candidate who is most likely to
deliver your vision.
It should also be noted that we can
make history on Nov. 4 by electing the
rst gay mayor of our nations capital. Its
not often we get the opportunity to elect
the most qualied candidate weve ever
had for mayor AND make history at the
same time. Its a win-win!
Catania a clear choice for Democrats

Mayoral candidate
has had our back,
now we will have hers
By MARC ALBERT
I am a lifelong Democrat and know all
three candidates. I am voting for the best
person for the o ce, and without doubt,
that is Carol Schwartz.
There was once a time when I would
have wondered how a straight, Republican
now an independent woman could ght
with such erce dedication for the commu-
nitys rights. Then I got to know Carol.
I met Carol 26 years ago when we
served together on the nance commit-
tee of the Whitman-Walker Clinic where
she was an integral part of that family for
more than 17 years. She began working
as a volunteer, notably during the early
years of the AIDS crisis when there was
an intense stigma. Carol received the
Clinics highest award in 2006, the Partner
for Life, for her stalwart commitment to
people living with HIV and AIDS.
She has always been our caring, com-
mitted, collaborative, capable friend.
And I can attest that being a friend is not
something Carol Schwartz takes lightly.
As my personal relationship with Carol
evolved, I came to realize that it was not
just our community she fought for, worked
for, cared for. The importance of fairness
and equity are at the forefront of who
Carol Schwartz is. She speaks passionately
about fair housing, greater opportunities
for employment, and ensuring long-time
District residents who are increasingly dis-
enfranchised are able to bring diversity to
our city for years to come.
I have read many pieces during this
election about how Carol has been gone
for a while. I am stunned by the short-
sightedness of these repeated com-
ments. Carol did not want to leave public
o ce and was targeted for passing legis-
lation to give sick leave to workers. She
felt so strongly about the advocacy she
could bring to the Council, she waged a
personally nanced write-in campaign
that garnered 40,000 votes.
I have also been disturbed by the age-
ism that has been thrown her way. As an
almost 70-year-old lawyer, I know that my
mind and energy are better than ever,
and enhanced by experience. It is shame-
ful that some have disregarded her can-
didacy, all the more so given her long re-
cord of passionately supporting us.
Carol oers a positive choice. Her re-
cord, integrity as well as the energy and
commitment she would bring to the o ce
are what we need now more than ever.
Marc Albert, Democrat, Ward 2
When I served as president of the board
of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, Carol was
vice president. Through her work, Carol
has demonstrated her focused concern
for people living with AIDS and the disad-
vantaged. She was also a strong voice for
scal responsibility. Im voting for Carol
with great pride.
Dr. Robert Ray, Democrat, Ward 1
Carol showed me rst-hand that she
cares for all residents of D.C. When I was
director of O ce of Latino Services at
Whitman-Walker Clinic, she was a great
help to Latinos(as) aected by AIDS. And
when I was interim director of the May-
ors O ce on Latino Aairs, Carol was
always helping to better serve the Latino
community. I trust her integrity and val-
ues. Carol has my full support.
Frank R. Yurrita, Democrat, Ward 4
Volunteering for the Whitman-Walker
Clinic with Carol over the years, I have
seen her outspoken dedication to our
community. Carol was an advocate for the
Clinic when it was going through di cult
nancial issues, and she stuck with us. I
admire and respect Carol for her genuine
concern for all of our citys residents, the
homeless, those who need healthcare, as
well as our business community, which
is trying to thrive. I cant think of a better
candidate who speaks her mind, stands
up for what is right, weighs the options
to develop the best course of action, and
stays calm in the face of di culty.
Billy Cox, Democrat, Ward 2
I worked with Carol on the Whitman-
Walker board where she was always de-
pendable, honest and assertive in her belief
that all residents of the District, especially
the disenfranchised, be equally represented
and entitled to all services. I could always
count on Carol and I know the city can as
well. Thats why I will be voting for her.

By JOHN KLENERT
For the rst time, D.C. residents will get
to choose our attorney general when we
head to the polls. Of ve candidates, Lo-
rie Masters brings the most experience
working on issues that matter to D.C., and
Ill be casting my ballot for her.
Lorie has more than 30 years of experi-
ence practicing law in the District. She has
extensive experience handling cases of
all sizes, from pro bono cases to complex
cases worth hundreds of millions of dollars
where she managed teams of lawyers. And
through her years of work and her contin-
ued commitment to justice, Lorie has more
than proven she will demand fair treatment
for everyone, no matter their sexual orien-
tation, gender or race.
For her entire career, Lorie has fought
insurance companies on behalf of policy-
holders. She has secured health coverage
for individuals diagnosed with rare and
life-threatening diseases, guaranteeing
that clients get the insurance they need
in order to proceed with the treatments
recommended by their doctors. She will
be able to bring this expertise to the of-
ce of attorney general and help to make
sure D.C. residents including members
of D.C.s transgender community who
face challenges in receiving the medi-
cal services they need have access to
healthcare.
Lorie has represented victims of human
tra cking pro bono, and led ground-
breaking federal lawsuits recovering dam-
ages for her clients to the tune of millions
of dollars. This commitment to justice for
victims is important for our future attor-
ney general, as members of D.C.s LGBT
community, particularly our young people,
are vulnerable to sex tra cking.
Lories litigated many fair employment
and discrimination cases, and has been
involved in increasing access to justice for
people across D.C. She has served on the
boards of several organizations that help
the public access pro bono legal services,
including the Legal Aid Society and Wom-
ens Bar Association. In addition, Lorie
has chaired diversity initiatives through
her work with the American Bar Associa-
tion, and serves on their Gender Equity
Task Force.
Our citys rst elected attorney general
should be someone we know will run the
o ce with honesty and fairness, and Lo-
rie Masters has more than proven that
through her years of commitment to bet-
tering our communities. We dont often
get to vote for a candidate of Lories cali-
ber. Thats why I urge everyone reading
this to join me and vote for Lorie Masters
on Nov. 4.
A vote for honesty and fairness
Bowser, Norton, Racine,
Mendelson and Bonds
On Nov. 4, vote for Muriel Bowser for
mayor, Eleanor Holmes Norton for dele-
gate, Karl Racine for attorney general, Phil
Mendelson for Council chair and Anita
Bonds for Council-at-large.
Bowser is by far the best choice for
mayor. There are many reasons but key
to them is her ability to transcend the dif-
ferences among the electorate. She is a
fth-generation Washingtonian who un-
derstands the needs and wants of those
who have lived here for generations yet is
part of a younger generation able to un-
derstand those who are moving here to-
day looking to enjoy all that Washington
has become. We are a vibrant, growing
city and need a mayor who will continue
to respect the diversity of our residents
and honor those who have worked and
lived here helping us become who we are
today. Gentrication can happen but we
must ensure that those who have raised
their families here for generations are not
only still welcome, but can aord to stay.
Muriel Bowser is the only candidate who
can do that. She is an honest and intelli-
gent woman, reelected three times by her
constituents; a Democrat with the values
of the Democratic Party. She is the only
candidate with the ability to work closely
with our neighboring governors, who
have both endorsed her, and to work with
our Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton to
ght in the Congress for the people of the
District. President Obama has endorsed
her and she will use her inuence with
him to join in our ght for budget and
legislative autonomy. She has been en-
dorsed by both the SEIU and the Cham-
ber of Commerce, not easy to achieve.
She will continue to move the city in the
upward arc we have been on ever since
Anthony Williams, who has also endorsed
her, was mayor.
Norton is an institution unto herself
and the residents of the District can do no
better than to have her continue as our
delegate in Congress.
Karl Racine is the best choice to be our
rst independent attorney general. He is
the person with experience as managing
partner in a 600-member law rm with a
$350 million budget and the AGs o ce is
a large law rm. Hailing from the District,
he has an in-depth knowledge of who we
are and the legal and political skills to
handle the issues that the AGs o ce will
be working on.
Phil Mendelson deserves re-election as
Council chair. He is a decent and honest
politician who has over the years shown
he has the best interests of the people of
the District at heart. I hope he will work to
make the Council more transparent. That
would include not drafting tax packages
and slipping them into the budget be-
hind closed doors 18 hours before a vote.
He has to trust his judgment enough to
hold hearings on the choices he is recom-
mending. He should reconsider the tax
on gym memberships and yoga classes
because we need to encourage people to
lead healthy lives.
Anita Bonds deserves re-election to
one of the at-large seats on the Council.
She has shown herself to be a ghter for
senior citizens and those in the District
in need of a champion. She had the guts
to stand up to her mentor, Marion Barry,
when he did the wrong thing again. She
has proven she understands government
and will stand up for the working people
of the District.
Both Courtney R. Snowden and Elissa
Silverman are also deserving of consid-
eration. Snowden has spent a lifetime
ghting for the rights of individuals and
will bring to the Council a number of im-
portant perspectives no one else has.
Snowden is a single mom and an active
member of the LGBT community. She is an
intelligent, savvy Washingtonian who grew
up in Ward 4, now lives in Ward 7, and is
a sixth generation Washingtonian. She
would make a great addition to the Coun-
cil. Silverman has run before and then and
now has shown she is well versed on the
issues facing the District. She understands
the District government having covered it
as a reporter and delved into the details
of the budget in her work for the D.C. Fis-
cal Policy Institute. She would also make a
good addition to the Council.
No matter who you vote for, make the
time to cast your ballot. Too many peo-
ple have fought and died for your right
to do that for you not to take advantage
of it. It is one of the major responsibili-
ties of citizenship that all of us should
take seriously.
Lories litigated many fair employment and discrimination cases, and has
been involved in increasing access to justice for people across D.C.

Strong on education,
safety and other key issues
By KHADIJAH TRIBBLE
Im an openly black lesbian and with
my wife, Robin, we have raised four sons
in this city. We are enjoying being grand-
parents to three beautiful little ones. I
operate a project management consult-
ingrmfrommy home o ce intheSouth-
east D.C. neighborhood of Congress
Heights.We are proudly supporting Coun-
cil member Muriel Bowser for mayor be-
cause she understands the issues that
we care about health, education, safe
streets, small businessesand job creation.
Not only does Bowser understand the
issues, she is pragmatic and thoughtful
in her approach to solutions.Upon learn-
ingaboutthe heavy nancial burden that
many parents and caregivers face with
transporting their children to and from
school, Bowser crafted a bill to help en-
sure money would not be a barrier for
us regarding our kids education. While
some try to downplay thisimportant and
necessarypiece of legislation,for regular
folks like us, it is a big deal.
For as long as I can remember, Ive
been immersed in public service in some
form or fashion. As a daughter of the
South and a student of the civil rights
movement, I learned early on that my
voice was not always welcomed at the ta-
ble,but if I wanted to make a dierence in
my community,I had to demand a seatat
the table. One way to do so is through
campaigns and elected o ce.
Growing up, I didnt always have a visu-
al representation of me or my ideals. But
thank goodness in 2014, young girls can
see themselves and their aspirations
made real through Muriel Bowser. Eigh-
teen months ago, it might have seemed
an unlikely and improbable feat to be the
Democratic nominee for mayor of the
District of Columbia, but Bowser had the
audacity to believe that she had some-
thing to oer this great city. Along the
way, she captured the hearts and minds
of a diverse group of people who believe
in her too. Bowser has been truly mas-
terful in building a campaign apparatus
that would rival some congressional cam-
paigns.Herleadership abilities aremade
visible in the selection of her team, the
execution of her plan and the person-
alengagementwithvoters.
Ive had the pleasure to witness rst-
hand how Bowser connects with individu-
als from all over the city.About a year ago,I,
along with 10 or so friends of mine, head-
edouttoan event tohave tea with Bowser to
learn more about her vision for the city.We
werea diverse group of individualswith vary-
ing social, economic, professional and educa-
tionalbackgrounds,butwe all hadone thing
in common: Wewanted a smart, accountable
leader who connects with the people. It was in
her living room thatBowser earned my sup-
port and my vote. Ive never waveredandnei-
ther has she in her commitment totheideals
that this city hassomuchmoreto oer all of
its residents.
I dont have much money, but I do have
what I learned growing up in the South I
havea voice and I promised to useitin sup-
port of Muriel Bowser for mayor.Having al-
lies and supporters who understand the is-
sues that are important to you and take them
on as their own is important. That is what a
true public servant is and that is whyCouncil
member Bowserhas my support.
As Ive observed and watched her engage
with the residents of the District, I couldnt
help but be impressed with the way she con-
nects with everyday individuals. In my opin-
ion,we need a leader in the Wilson Building
who can champion the causesforall of us,
leveraging our strengths to improve our
weaknesses and making real the promise
of a fair chance to improve our lives and the
communities we call home. Bowser is the
right leader for right now.
Im excited by the prospect of her
leadership because I believe she has the
tenacity and strength to build a govern-
ment workforce we can be proud of. A
competent and compassionate work-
force inspired to do the work of govern-
ment and improve the lives of people of
this city. The more I think about it, the
more I know that we deserve the kind of
leadership and accountability that Muriel
Bowser will bring to city government. I
encourage you to join me and thousands
of District voters in casting a vote for the
future of this world-class city.

KHADIJAH TRIBBLE is a longtime D.C. resident.
Catania thinks deeply and
charts his own course
By DENIS DISON

Anyone paying even scant attention

to local politics in D.C. knows we havent
always gotten the elected leaders we
deserve. Scandal, mismanagement, lax
oversight - the Wilson Building has just as
often been an embarrassment as a place
where Washingtonians could go for lead-
ership and good government. That could
change on Nov. 4 if David Catania wins
election as our next mayor.
I rst met David when he shocked
Washingtons establishment in 1997 by
winning a special election and becom-
ing the rst-ever openly gay member of
the City Council. After six years in D.C.,
I confess I had little hope that someone
like him could overcome the years of ma-
chine politics that had kept our city mired
in deeply disappointing government. It
was a head-snapping moment.
David continued turning heads as he
delved into the hard work of oversight
that we should expect of all Council mem-
bers. He asked tough questions of highly
placed bureaucrats, fought for change to
improve city services and turned around
the Districts HIV/AIDS programs. More
recently, David has helped to make our
city among the most progressive in the
nation on issues such as marriage equal-
ity and marijuana reform.
Like a growing plurality of Americans,
David is an independent who thinks deeply
about issues and charts his own course, ig-
noring pre-programmed solutions etched
in out-of-touch party platforms. He cares
about results for regular Washingtonians,
not special interests or party bosses who
seek only to enrich themselves.
David has been criticized for having a
temper and taking his job too serious-
ly. (Yes, this is what passes for criticism in
local D.C. politics.) So let me be clear; Id
take 10 David Catanias scratching each oth-
ers eyes out during Council meetings if it
meant 10 times the results hes gotten dur-
ing his 17 years there.I mean, who actually
thinks our citys leaders need to be gentler
and kinder to one another while doing so
little to serve the people who pay their sala-
ries? We could use a lot more well-placed
passion and a lot less passive-aggression
during Council meetings.
That David would become the rst
openly gay mayor of the capital of the
United States has received little atten-
tion during this race, and perhaps rightly
so. D.C. aint Arkansas, after all. But no-
body who cares about moving the ball
forward for LGBT people should discount
the eect Davids election could have on
the world leaders who so regularly pass
through our city. And knowing David, he
wont let many opportunities pass to re-
mind them of the fair-mindedness that
elevated him to the position.
LGBT voters in Washington have a rare
opportunity to elect as mayor a true leader
of our movement, a demonstrated cham-
pion of progressive values, an extremely
eective legislator and someone who will
ght every single day for people in every
ward and every corner of this city. David
Catania represents the government we
deserve, and thats why hes got my vote.

Time to elect a mayor we can be proud of

Id take 10 David Catanias scratching each others eyes out during Council
meetings if it meant 10 times the results hes gotten during his 17 years there.

Fairness, equality, respect
and inclusion for all
By ANTHONY G. BROWN
Fairness, equality, respect, inclusion.
To me, these are more than just buzz-
words theyre part of an important history
of struggle for so many of our neighbors.
And theyre the values that we must con-
tinue to ght for today, in Maryland and
throughout the United States.
Were at a moment in our collective his-
tory when progress on the issues we care
about is being made quickly. Today, mar-
riage equality is becoming law in a number
of states as judges rea rm what weve long
known to be true: that discrimination, of any
kind, is both wrong and illegal.
But even just a few years ago, the outlook
was far from certain. Here in Maryland, it
took an army of activists, legislators, com-
munity leaders and ordinary Marylanders to
pass our marriage equality law. We did it by
holding rallies, meeting with interest groups
and writing op-eds. But most importantly,
we did it by talking with our neighbors about
how marriage equality was a civil right that,
once shared by all, would strengthen our
communities.
Im proud of the work we did together to
pass marriage equality, but Im especially
proud that we, as Marylanders, became the
rst state to ratify equality at the ballot box.
But our work didnt stop there.
Just last year, for example, I was proud to
stand with Equality Maryland and leaders in
the LGBT community to ensure that mem-
bers of our transgender community have
legal protection against discrimination.
I remain committed to the work of ex-
panding opportunity and equality because
of the values I learned growing up. I was
raised one generation removed from pov-
erty; the son of a black father and white
mother at a time when their marriage was
considered by some to violate the values
our country was founded on.
Raised by his grandmother in one of
the poorest neighborhoods in Kingston,
Jamaica, my father came to this country as
a young man, determined to get an educa-
tion and become a doctor. He achieved that
dream, and spent his life providing care for
patients who, often, could not aord to pay
for his services.
He taught me that America is special a
place where my parents could marry and
raise their children. A place where we can
worship, speak and protest peacefully. But
most importantly, its a place where every-
ones rights must be respected and defend-
ed equally.
Ive dedicated my life to defending those
rights as a soldier and as a public servant.
And as governor, I will continue to work with
advocates and leaders in the LGBT commu-
nity to defend the rights of all Marylanders.
In the general election on Nov. 4, Im
facing an opponent who doesnt share
our values.
My Republican opponent stood against
marriage equality. He also opposed the
transgender non-discrimination law we
recently passed. Now that hes running for
governor, hes claiming that he wont undo
these important protections, but I think
Marylanders deserve a leader who will fully
enforce these important laws and continue
working to build a more equal and just soci-
ety in the years ahead.
I also know that Marylands next governor
is going to play a critical role in implement-
ing our new laws working hand-in-hand
with the legislature to ensure that no Mary-
lander is denied the rights and treatment
they deserve.
We need leaders who are going to stand
up for the rights of all Americans. And we de-
serve a governor who believes that all of our
neighbors deserve the same protections.
So on Nov. 4, Im asking for your vote so
we can continue ghting for fairness, equal-
ity, respect and inclusion for all.

5 great neighborhoods
for trick or treating
Wheres the best place to go trick

whom you ask. CBS D.C.s Jamie
Hardin, who prides herself on nding
D.C.s o-the-beaten-path treasures
recommends Capitol Hill, Embassy
Row, Georgetown, the Smithsonian
National Zoo and Old Town Alexandria
as the best spots. Curbed (dc.curbed.
com) recommends Friendship Heights,
Chevy Chase, American University
Park and Tacoma as the best spots. The
only shared neighborhood on the lists is
Georgetown, which Curbed ranked as
the best spot for its easy walkability and
a uence.
If you want to gay it up a bit, Ellen
Kahn of Rainbow Families says her
neighborhood in East Silver Spring that
borders Takoma Park is rife with a cluster
of nearly 20 same-sex, mostly lesbian
couples with kids in the area of Richmond
Avenue, Gist Avenue, Takoma Avenue,
and Chicago Avenue.
Its always a pretty active Halloween
scene there, she says. Capitol Hill is
also a good place to nd some diversity,
maybe more dads too.
On Sunday, take your gay family out to
Centreville, Va., for the groups Fall Day
at Cox Farms, where Rainbow Families
D.C. will meet up for kid-friendly slides,
animals, mazes, hayrides, live music,
great food and a pumpkin smashing

How long have you been out and who was
the hardest person to tell?
Its been about seven years since I came
out. I was denitely guring things out for a
while. The hardest person to tell was my ex-
boyfriend.
Whos your LGBT hero?
I really love and appreciate Tig Notaro.
Shes hilarious on the Professor Blasto
podcast. She has a talent for taking seemingly
mundane and sometimes uncomfortable
topics and turning it into comedy gold.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past

sex couples. 100 percent coming soon!
What non-LGBT issue are you most
passionate about?
Early education, especially related to art
and music. I volunteer with an organization
called Girls Rock! D.C. with a mission to create
a supportive, inclusive and creative space for
girls to develop their self-condence, build
community, stand up and rock out.
What historical outcome would you
change?
There are so many horrible historical
outcomes I would want to change but the
environmental damage weve caused is
terrifying. Dont mess with Mother Nature.

If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
I wouldnt change a thing in my personal
life. Im lucky in love. But it would be really
interesting to see how the world would adapt
to that reality.
What do you believe in beyond the
physical world?
This question made me think a little about
the semantics of what a physical world
is. Im an existential person and I take each
moment as it comes. But I also appreciate the
unseen beauty in emotions, the complexity
of the universe and the energy we share with
everything on this planet.
Whats your advice for LGBT movement
leaders?
Be a strong voice for transgender rights,
supporting and ghting for workplace
equality, family and parenting issues, securing
identity documents and competent and
accessible health care. Equality for all!

Liz DeRoche says her overall Halloween ineptness traces to her conservative
evangelical Christian upbringing where Halloween was forbidden.
We were kind of the scary ones, like speaking in tongues and stu, says
DeRoche, who grew up a pastors kid. It was considered the devils holiday
so we had to go to a church potluck on Halloween. It was really sad and
depressing while all the other kids were dressing up and getting candy.
Things changed dramatically in later years.
My dad nally came out of the closet and has a really beautiful boyfriend
and my moms remarried, says the 33-year-old Lebanon, Ore., native. It
really turned around.
DeRoche makes her living as a full-time musician doing both her own solo
stu, making kids music as the Singing Lizard (thesinginglizard.com), working
with the lesbian band the Pushovers and also Tom Goss and Cane in the
Sticks. She calls her own stu electronic soul, often with heavy drums and
big vocals.
Look for her on Saturday at the Pinch (3848 14th St., N.W.) for a Halloween
show in which she and some of her bandmates will be playing Bon Jovi covers.
The show is at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 with costume, $10 without.
DeRoche came to Washington six years ago with her partner, Mandy
Townsend, to explore the East Coast and be closer to my brother and his
family in Philly.
She and Townsend live in Capitol Hill. DeRoche enjoys biking, movies,
traveling and games with her friends in her free time.

When out actor Tom Story rst read
Rachel Bonds new play The Wolfe
Twins, he wasnt sure exactly what it was
all about, but he knew he wanted to do it.
It was the relationships that got me,
he says. My character has a genuine
loving, relationship with his husband. He
also has an intense relationship with his
sister, a dynamic thats not often explored
in plays. Gay marriage is still a newish
thing. Its great to originate a role that has
that in it but isnt solely about that. And
in real life, I have one sibling a sister.
Were very close in age. So the brother/
sister relationship is meaningful to me.
In The Wolfe Twins (currently making
its world premiere at Studio Theatre), Story
plays Lewis, a gay man who invites his
tightly wound sister Dana (Birgit Happuch)
on a trip to Italy hoping to reconnect. Set
in the lobby of a small hotel in Rome, the
play deals in confessions and discoveries.
When Dana learns she was excluded from
attending Lewis marriage to his longtime
boyfriend (who has stayed behind in New
York), shes not happy. Battle ensues.
Witnessing the Wolfe reunion and sharing
a few of their own family intimacies are the
hotels stoic manager Alex (Silas Gordon
Brigham) and vibrant fellow traveler Raina
(Jolly Abraham).
People tell me I must be exactly like
Lewis, Story says. Im not, but there are
similarities. Were about the same age.
Ive lived in New York. And though Im not
married, the idea of the wedding feels
personal. I can imagine how that would
be beautiful to have a small wedding on a
beach. I imagine Lewis didnt invite his sister
because he wanted to protect that precious
part of his life from any complications.
In 16 years of acting professionally,
Story has played varied parts ranging
from Katurian, the short story writer
targeted by the police state in The
Pillowman to artist Andy Warhol in Pop!
to many roles from classical theater. He
works a lot. In the last seven years, Story
says, he has had about three weeks o.
In addition to acting, Story now directs.
This spring, he made a strong directorial
debut at Studio 2ndStage with Moth,
Declan Greenes play about bullying and
the intensity of adolescent friendship.
More recently he directed Noel Cowards
comedy Design for Living at the
Berkshire Theatre Festival. Following
The Wolfe Twins, Story is directing
Mark ORowes Terminus, a Dublin-set
monologue play, also at Studio 2ndStage.
Directing calls on Story to ex new and
dierent creative muscles.
I enjoy the wholeness of directing
guring out the design, the casting, putting
all the pieces together. Im a big picture
person. Enjoy conceptualizing. Ive learned
a lot about acting over the years and I
enjoy being on the outside and helping
actors make good choices. To really be a
director, I need to keep doing it.
Growing up in Northern Virginia, Story
was exposed to interesting theater. He
remembers seeing Woolly Mammoth
productions in what to him seemed like a
bombed-out building. Hes still surprised
his parents let him drive their car to
Studio Theater 14th Street was an
altogether dicier place then.
He attended Duke University, initially
with the intention of becoming a doctor,
but a week in he changed his major to
drama. He graduated in three years
and went on to the Juilliard School
in Manhattan where he studied with
Michael Kahn, artistic director at D.C.s
Shakespeare Theatre Company. Soon
after nishing at Juilliard, Story earned
his equity card in D.C. and has worked
primarily here ever since.

Swifts latest lacks
craftsmanship of
earlier eorts
By SANTIAGO MELLI-HUBER
Taylor Swifts fth studio album 1989
marks a new phase in the young stars career.
The title refers to Swifts birth year and
the era from which she drew inspiration.
Despite a few shining moments, the
album, out this week, would not be out
of place in the late 80s. While its terribly
catchy, the pop-country stars debut
into a pure pop arena fails to match
the innovative sounds of Red or the
lyrical prowess and storytelling of songs
like 15, despite its mildly profane and
rowdier lyrical content.
Welcome to New York is the
appropriately named and positioned
lead track, an ode from the earnest, wide-
eyed perspective of a newcomer. It also
introduces fans to her new soundtrack.
Shes gone from a bushy-haired Nashville
country singer to a slick Manhattan pop
star, as evidenced by an electronic backing
track and heavily auto-tuned vocals.
Queer fans will appreciate the mostly
silent allys supportive couplet You can
want who you want/Boys and boys and girls
and girls. Overall, the synthpop track may
be catchy and could lead to new directions
for Swift, but its wholly unoriginal and
could have been performed by a half dozen
other pop princesses.
Blank Space seems to have borrowed
elements of trap and applied it to a
hopeful love song. These inuences
coupled with the lyrics, some of the
better writing on the album (in addition
to Out Of The Woods, aside from its
repetitive chorus), elevate the song to the
level of Mine, Swifts popular 2010 single
with similar themes. The lyrics are strong,
well-crafted, funny and self-aware. Swift
sings to someone she refers to as her
next mistake and admits she has a long
list of ex-lovers/theyll tell you Im insane,
responding to critics of her dating habits.
Gone is the forced twang of Mean, but
the message in Shake It O is familiar
and more powerful than before. An
impossibly addictive and fun song, the
lead single is only brought down a notch
by the ridiculous bridge, where Taylor tries
to rap while mentioning an ex-boyfriend,
which has little connection with the rest of
the song. It accurately reects the 24-year-
olds new public attitude: she proudly
identies as a feminist and dismisses as
sexist criticism for singing about her exes,
citing male stars who often and freely sing
about the same topics.
The standout song is I Wish You Would,
a track with pleasantly surprising shifts
in pacing. Swift clearly enjoyed playing
with the song and created a toe-tapping
melody worthy of being kept on repeat.
Bad Blood is the weakest song of
the album. Swift conrmed in a Rolling
Stone interview that the track alludes to
a feud with another female pop star, who
many theorize is Katy Perry. Its a diluted
version of I Knew You Were Trouble. The
lyrics are uninspired and often cliche and
it adds nothing to the album but angst.
How You Get the Girl is a catchy, non-
oensive song, but the lazy songwriting
misses the bar of what Swift is capable
of lyrically, a problem throughout 1989.
She irts with Bjork-type innovation on I
Know Places but refuses to get too edgy.
Carthartic Clean closes the project and
is one of the albums strongest tracks.
While Red was a powerful pop
album with some country inuences,
1989 is a departure for Swift in a
terrible way. Overall, its underwhelming
and predictable. Many tracks have
commercial appeal and some are strong,
but Swift fans will be disappointed by the
albums conformity.
TAYLOR SWIFT drifts more heavily into pop on her new album 1989, out this week.

Give your margarita a little
Dia de los Muertos air
By KRISTEN HARTKE
The High Heel Race may be over and
Halloween is just one night of revelry, but
Dia de los Muertos extends the festivities
through Sunday, allowing yet another
excuse for outrageous facepaint, colorful
masks and most importantly, food and
drink that go way beyond candy corn and
pumpkin juice.
The three-day Mexican holiday known
as Day of the Dead that begins Oct. 31 is
truly a food-lovers dream. Rather than
being a morose pining for those who
are lost, the holiday is a celebration of
everything they loved, especially the
favorite foods and beverages of the
dearly departed.
Its a way to share happy memories
with friends and family, as well as a great
excuse for a party. Overindulgence is
denitely the theme of any Dia de los
Muertos gathering brightly painted
homemade altars are piled high with
fruits, vegetables, sweets, pictures and
trinkets, the music is loud, the clothes are
wild and the food and drink are owing.
Chef Jos Andrs hosts Day of the Dead
festivities each year at his restaurant
Oyamel Cocina Mexicana in Penn Quarter,
honoring a dead Mexican celebrity with
special culinary oerings. This years
honoree is El Santo, a legendary Mexican
luchador wrestler who died in 1984 just
a week after publicly unmasking himself
for the rst time; slightly creepily masked
Oyamel sta members serve up some of El
Santos favorite dishes, including Ancas de
Rana en Mole Verde, crispy frog legs with
a tomatillo mole; Puerco en Chile Morita,
spare ribs with chipotle salsa; and El Santo
contra los Zombies, a zesty cocktail made
with El Luchador Organic Tequila, orange
liqueur and pomegranate juice.
If you want to host your own Dia de
los Muertos celebration, consider rst
whom you want to honor it could be
someone you knew personally or a public
gure you admire (or abhor). For instance,
honoring Andy Warhol through food might
encompass tomato soup, bananas and Coca
Cola, all items that gured prominently in
his art, or some of his professed vices, which
included a bar of chocolate sandwiched
between sliced bread (which he called cake)
and Jack Daniels. Maybe your grandmother
had a penchant for martinis and macaroni
and cheese.
To go more traditional, look to the
ancient Aztecs, where Dia de los Muertos
nds its origins a culture that yields
rich possibilities for both food and drink.
Corn tamales, candied pumpkin and chili-
spiked hot chocolate can form the basis
of any menu, then you can add tequila-
infused queso, guacamole with fresh
tortillas and turkey mole.
To add more authenticity, consider
a pan de muerto (bread of the dead),
a traditional sweet bread that is often
topped with crossed bones made of
dough and sugar skull cookies decorated
with day-glo icing. There are several small
Hispanic bakeries and markets across
the D.C. area that are worth checking out
for Dia de los Muertos treats, including
Capitol Supermarket near Logan Circle,
Panamericana Grocery in Columbia
Heights and La Mexicana Bakery &
Taqueria in Alexandria.
Its always fun to get a little fancy,
so impress your guests with Oyamel-
inspired margaritas topped with their
signature salt air (or foam). If you havent
had one yet, you are missing out, because
this is surely the way margaritas were
meant to be made. Make your favorite
margarita recipe, but not overly sweet,
shake it over ice, then strain into a martini
or cosmopolitan glass. To make the salt
foam, youll need soy lecithin, which can
often be found in health food stores
or even at GNC. Alternatively, you can
use Versawhip, Sucro or a combination
of calcium chloride and xantham gum.
This is a fun and easy way to try out a
little molecular gastonomy and there are
plenty of recipes and tutorials online.
Oyamels Salt Air
for Margaritas:
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1 cup water
1/2 tablespoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon soy lecithin
Mix all the ingredients together in
a bowl. Using an immersion (or stick)
blender, whip the liquid, tilting the bowl
so that the blender is not completely
submerged and can whip more air into
the liquid. When you have at least an
inch of foam on the top of the liquid,
after about a minute, scoop it o gently
with a spoon and place on the top of the
margarita. Serve immediately.

Gay author shares
horrifying memoir
You look great!
When youre dieting, there are no
sweeter words. Losing weight is work,
sacrice and lots of self-control. For sure,
its not for wimps.
But how much is too much? Can you
shed your past while you shed pounds,
too? In My Thinning Years by Jon Derek
Croteau, youll read about gains and losses
that have nothing to do with a scale.
From a very young age, Croteau feared
his father.
A salesman who traveled a lot, the man
was loud, controlling and abusive to the
entire family, both physically and mentally.
Croteau remembers when he was small
and his father screamed at him for singing
in front of family friends. When Croteau
confessed to playing dress up in preschool,
his father withheld food. Years later, after
the family moved from Ohio to the Boston
area, Croteaus father forced him into sports,
vowing to make a real man of him.
Croteau ercely hated sports but
played anyhow. He desperately wanted
his fathers approval; football, basketball
and baseball seemed the way to get it.
But the older Croteau got, the more
relentless the abuse became. He started
staying with friends as much as possible,
avoiding his own home. By then, hed
internalized his fathers homophobia
and, in doing so, began to fear his
own feelings and confusion about his
sexuality. He prayed to God to deliver
him from being gay. He developed an
unrequited crush on his best guy friend.
Disgusted with himself, loathing his
father but unable to stop trying to win
his love and approval, Croteau became
depressed and considered suicide.
He couldnt, so he began running.
When he realized that exercise and
weight were things he could control, he
ran even more. He cut fat from his diet
entirely, then avoided almost all foods
and began to starve.
I knew that my father would rather I
be dead than be gay, he says. There was
nothing I could do but obey the orders I was
given, until I disintegrated into nothingness
and no one was going to stop me.
In his preface, author Jon Derek
Croteau (who obviously lived to tell the
tale) says he almost didnt write this book,
until he realized that My Thinning Years
might inspire others to let hope in when
faced with abuse for being gay.
For sure, victims who start this
emotional rags-to-riches story will know
theyre in the company of a kindred spirit
because of what Croteau bravely shares.
Those heartbreaking recollections make
this a hard book to read for anyone
(including LGBT allies, who will be
horried) but, at the same time, its also
hard to turn away from the rm promise
of triumph well get in the end. It Gets
Better was never more apt than here.
If youve taken an anti-bullying stand
this year, you will surely appreciate whats
inside this book. It may not exactly be a
pleasure read, but My Thinning Years is
thick with meaning.

5 great costumes
Genes Costumes (10636 Connecticut
Ave., Kensington, Md.) has Halloween
costumes for every fantasy a person wants
to live out for the night. Here are some of
their trendiest get-ups this season if you
need some last-minute inspiration!
1. The Joker one of the most famous
villains in pop culture so its no surprise
its one of the most popular costumes.
Its a quick costume to throw together
because the main component is all about
re-creating the tell-tale Joker makeup.
2. Pirate Pirates can be sexy or scary
depending on how you put together the
costume. Robin Hoods Captain Hook,
another famous villain, has shown
his popularity selling many at Genes
Costumes. Pirates of the Caribbeans
character Jack Sparrow, made a pop
culture icon by Johnny Depp, has also
been a huge pirate favorite.
3. Frozen The kids will love to dress
up as characters from the top-grossing
animated lm of all time, Frozen. The
most popular costume for girls has been
Elsa and her sister Anna. While boys have
been eager to dress up as iceman Kristo
and Prince Hans.
4. Flapper One of the womens favorite
costumes has been a 1920s apper. This
costume is easy to pull together at the last
minute. A loose tting dress, cigarette holder
and bob haircut wig create a look thats both
sexy and glamorous.
5. Military General Another sexy
choice is a military general. A popular
mens choice at Genes Costumes,
this look is distinguished but fun. The
authoritative costume will have people
turning heads for a man in uniform.

Many perceived
obstacles are just myths
By TIM SAVOY
I cant aord the down payment.
I have no idea where to start.
My income is above the threshold to
qualify for rst-time buyers programs.
There is absolutely no way I can buy
while single and have college debt still.
Every day, I hear the same excuses
from clients who want to purchase their
rst home. These excuses, while valid for
some, are myths in the buying process.
The reasons to purchase over renting
are discussed frequently. In the long run,
buying is more cost-eective than renting
(by about 35 percent in D.C.). For any buy-
er who lives in their property as their main
residence, the Homestead exemption low-
ers their assessed tax value by $70,200.
Not only is purchasing cheaper by the
month, but it also delivers annual returns.
Lets state the obvious: Buying a home
can be a scary process for anyone, let
alone purchasing for the rst time. An-
other reality, while many do purchase
with cash, not everyone has the liquid-
ity to make a rst purchase in cash. For
many rst-time buyers, a majority of life
savings goes toward a down payment of
20 percent to avoid a less desirable loan
product. For many, the words private
mortgage insurance (PMI) causes fear.
However, many do not realize that your
PMI on a purchase with less than 20 per-
cent down can be built into the rate of
your loan. Moreover, PMI is tax-deduct-
ible when your homeowners adjusted
gross income (AGI) is less than $100,000,
and still deductible, though reduced,
when above this threshold.
Purchasing in D.C. and the surround-
ing areas for the rst time does have its
incentives. For example, DC Open Doors
is a great opportunity for rst-time buy-
ers to receive a great loan while making
a low down payment. On the surface, the
program is simple, you can qualify if you
make up to $123,395 a year, a much high-
er ceiling than the average rst-time buy-
er may expect. Moreover, the maximum
loan amount is $417,000, easily allowing
a rst-time buyer to purchase a variety of
housing across the city. Even better, DC
Open Doors has some products with the
option of down payment forgiveness with
20 percent of your down payment forgiv-
en each year for ve years.
Perhaps a program like DC Open Doors
isnt the right product for you to nance
your rst home. Many lenders have prod-
ucts tailored to buyers who are hoping
to make a low down payment. For exam-
ple, one of my preferred lenders at First
Home Mortgage, David Toa, assists his
clients with loan products that provide a
maximum $625,500 loan with only 5 per-
cent down. Moreover, the same lender
can provide a loan of $850,000 with just
10 percent down. The takeaway message
here is that nancing is possible at all lev-
els of income and price points without
the industry standard 20 percent down.
In all honesty, purchasing real estate
relies heavily on relationships. For a rst-
time buyer, nd a lender who special-
izes in working with rst purchases. Many
look rst to their bank, many times a
national or international nancial institu-
tion, to nance their purchase; however,
sometimes the best lender isnt always
the one you bank with. Instead, look to a
more local mortgage brokerage (in fact,
feel free to call David with First Home at
610-348-3772).
Finally, there is nothing wrong with
searching in the long-term. Yes, mortgage
rates are lower now than they have been
in a year, and we do not know when this
trend will reverse (have no doubt, rates
will have to rise eventually). Regardless of
your timeline, take the rst steps in the
buying process; nd a lender and real
estate agent you can trust. I can promise
you will not regret the decision to pur-
chase your rst home.
