theimpositionofhard-lineShariah-basedlawsandpolicies.

TeimportantthingisthevictoryofIslamism,whichthe
WhiteHousealsoseemstoendorse.
TenotionthatthereisalegitimateformofIslamism

Obamaadministration.PresidentObamaseemstobe-
lievetheIslamistsarelegitimizedsimplybyparticipating
inthepoliticalprocess.Somearguethatthedemands
ofelectoralpoliticswillmoderatetheIslamistparties,
whosememberswillevolvefromstern-eyedtheocrats
intosocialreformers.
Nomatterwhatthesourceofthedelusion,nopolitical
movementthatexaltstheKorancanpeaceablycoexistwith
theconceptoffreedomattherootofWesterngovernance.
Islamistnotionsofdemocracyareconstrainedbythestric-
turesoftheirreligion.RadicalMuslimsrejectthehumanistic
valuesthatgavebirthtomodernWesterngovernment;the
self-evidenttruthsregardingeveryonesinalienablerights
tolife,libertyandthepursuitofhappinessarejustsomuch
indelheresytotheIslamists.Terearenoinalienablerights
underpoliticalIslam,onlysubmissiontothewillofAllah.
TeIslamistpartiesinEgyptandelsewherearepromoting
democracysimplyasameansofconsolidatingtheirpower.
Teyseetheprocessasaratcheteect,witheverygainthey
makeasonemoresteptowarderectingaShariah-basedthe-
ocracy.Increasedpowerwillnotleadandinfact,neverhas
ledtomoderation,buttofurtherdemandstoimplement
theirblueprintforKoranicrule.TemodelistheIranian
Revolution,inwhichabriefperiodofopennesswasfollowed
bytheascentofIslamichard-linerswhosnuedoutanyhint
oflibertyandexecutedthosewhohadthenervetodier.

Almost everything in that statement was false or dan-
gerous. Aside from the ,,-state-type error of Maldives for
Malvinas, the U.S. does not look forward to dialogue on
theissue,butratheravoidsitliketheplague.Andinthepast,
wewerenotneutralbuteventuallyintervenedwithmassive
clandestinesupportforGreatBritain,a.1oally.Secretary
ofStateHillaryClintonhadpreviouslyusedthetermMalvi-
nas, which is a sort of Argentine equivalent of the Zion-
istentityabankruptconstructloadedwithculturaland
political signicance. Obama should know that the more
he uses that term (or trills some sort of M-word for an ar-
chipelagosomewhereonthemap),themorelikelyitisthat
therewillbeanArgentineeorttoreplicatethe:8:attack,
especially as the Peronist Kirchner regime seeks foreign
scapegoats(cf.therecentnationalizationoftheSpanishoil

ishloudlyreducetheirmilitaryforces.Teproblemisnot
justthatObamahasnoknowledgeofgeography,butthathe
hasnoneeitherabouthistoryordiplomacy.

deployablenuclearweapons.Inutopiathatsoundsnoble,
butwithNorthKoreanownuclear,andIranabouttobe,
thenumberofroguestatesthatdonotplaybytherulesof
thenuclearclubisgrowing,notshrinking.
Teadministrationhasalsoquitepubliclyannounceda
shifinU.S.strategicattentiontothePacic,apparentlyon
thepremiseofarisingChinaandaquiescentEuropeand
Mediterranean.AsidefromthefactthatEuropessouthern
coastliesattheintersectionofthreecontinents,andiscrit-
icalforoperationsinNorthAfrica,theMiddleEast,and
EasternEurope,nowisnotthetimeforourrstPacic
presidenttoannounceadrawdowninourEuropeanforces.
Historicalpressures,wellapartfromPutinisminRussia,
arecomingtotheforeonthecontinentpressuresthat
werelongsuppressedbytheaberrationsofWorldWar ii,
theColdWar,thedivisionofGermany,andtheriseof
theEU.Teso-calledGermanproblemthetendency
ofGermanyquitenaturallyatsomepointtotranslate
itsinnatedynamiceconomicprowessintopolitical,cul-
tural,andaboveallmilitarysuperioritydidnotvanish
simplybecauseapostmodernEUannouncedthatithad
transcendedhumannatureanditsmembershipwouldno
longerbesusceptibletoancientTucydideannationalist
passionslikehonor,fear,orself-interest.
If you have doubts on that, just review current German
and southern-European newspapers, where commentary
sounds more likely to belong in :,8 than in :o::. Te ca-
tastropheoftheEUhasnotbeenavoidedbyadhocbandag-
ingitisstillonthenearhorizon.Nowisthetimetoreas-
sureGermanythatastrongAmerican-led.1oeliminates
anyneedforGermanrearmament,andthathistoricaloddi-
ties (why is France nuclear, while a far stronger Germany
isnot:)arenotoddatall.Inshort,astheEUunravels,and
anti-Germany hysteria waxes among its debtors, while an-

Tereisapatternhereinalltheserecentmissteps,one
ofhesitancy,moralconfusion,andnavet.Totheextent
thatheunderstandsgeopolitics,itisofthejuvenilemulti-
culturalsort,inwhichhostilenuclearpowers,traditional
enemies,andtroublesomeneutralsareeithernotmuch
worsethanormorallyequivalenttolong-standingallies
