Prayer for Government Leaders
During this election time, Christian citizens must remember
that we are to pray “For kings and all those in authority that
we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and
holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2). Even if we do not agree with them
and their decisions, that is all the more reason to pray for
them. Former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee said
that he “asked God to confront leaders with his holiness and
power and bring them to the end of themselves so that they
will be compelled to lean not on their own understanding.”

Representative James Langford from Oklahoma prayer-walks his congregational
office floor daily to intercede for other leaders regardless of their party affiliation.
Representative Trey Gowdy of South Carolina is a relentless interrogator for the
House Committee on Ethics, Oversight, and Government Reform. He noted
“If you really think their beliefs are contrary to scripture, pray that the Lord will
open their eyes, but you also better ask Him to open your own eyes.” Seeking
God’s wisdom, he chairs the panel investigating the 2012 terrorist attack on
Benghazi.
Naturally, leaders struggle to find a balance between work and family. They
rarely receive thanks, but are constantly criticized. They are torn over economic,
partisan, and ethical issues. Governor Pat McCrory served fourteen years as
the Mayor of Charlotte. He was touched by a broadcast by a local pastor while
driving. He dialed the number given by the announcer from the church and said,
“I’m under a great deal of pressure, and I need your help and your prayers.” He
then assembled a prayer group around him which continued for years. He now
has a group that meets with him weekly in the executive mansion.
The governor noted the need of prayer for his family: “They didn’t volunteer for
public service, and yet they often feel more pressure than I do, because they
take it personally when I’m attacked.” His siblings, their families and nieces and
nephews, are “confronted on the street.”
As chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, Shirley Dobson calls on
all Americans to intercede. One of her teams went to the office of a senator
from New York. He declared that he was late for a meeting and didn’t have
time to talk and pray. However, he quickly returned to the room, dropped to his
knees, and said that he “couldn’t proceed without the blessing of Almighty God
to guide him.” That day, he was instrumental in defeating a radical abortion bill
in the Senate. The prayer team had no idea how strategic their visit would be.
“Seek the welfare of the city and pray to the Lord on its behalf” (Jeremiah 29:7).
By all means, vote this week, encourage others to do so… and keep on praying.
You will remember how I shared with you about the threat to religious freedom
as posed by the mayor and City Council of Houston. This Sunday evening, we
will be joining a number of Christian leaders for a live simulcast of “I Stand
Sunday,” 7:00 p.m. in our Worship Center. Nationally known leaders will be
speaking, defining the challenge, and calling us to unite together for the Lord
and the right to preach the gospel. Please come and stand with us.
