The reason we are interested in media ownership is to factor in for bias, censoring and agenda-driven narratives when we see a
news report. Otherwise its just a trivia. Power is after all the ability to avoid scrutiny and accountability. The real owners hate to be
identified as they wield their power through anonymity and that's the reason there is a nested holding pattern and proxy owners.
The challenge for NL staff if they are serious about showcasing media ownership is to identify the 'real' controllers - not just those
'listed' as owners or shareholders.
For example, take CNN-IBN, its pretty easy to point out to CNN, network 18 and Time Warner, Bahl and rajdeep, the more useful
insight would be how (or if) Southern Baptist church wrests control on 'certain' content as its widely suspected - especially
narratives aimed at making Indians ashamed of their heritage and traditions (preparing the ground for the soul harvesters to
come and proselytize)
Recall Hasan Ali. Trumpeting Hasan Ali as 'the biggest tax evader' is easy as most media houses were just reading out a PR
press release intended to mask someone else. Finding out why and how his accounts were unfrozen by the govt and on whose
behalf he was holding the money takes more courage, effort and integrity.
I like the idea behind this article and hope it goes beyond a google search and registered holding company names and
percentages.

What is this nonsense about "Southern Baptist church" and CNN? There is no connection.

Reply
Shekhar 7 months ago Harsha
Shyam is correct here. He means .Its not proven but its a strong suspicion looking at their coverage, the charities
they support and that's why it merits investigation. But you seem so sure there is no stake. What's your basis?
Complex network of holding patterns is meant to anonymize the owners. Anonymity is indeed power and source of
covert influence. Its pretty logical that rich churches with goals to spread influence and add to their subscription
business, will want a media stake, as with any industry powerhouses. its along the expected.lines if you know how
chuches work

Reply
Chanakya 5 months ago Shekhar
NewsLaundry should have added one line to above article -
"Baptist churches don't need to have ownership in NewsChannels. They can simply PAY any newsChannel
in India and ask them to show whatever they want".
Best defense is, teach Indians true history of India & instill Hindu values from school-level. Make them feel
proud the way Japanese/American feel about their identity & culture.
I consider media as small threat, but Foreign investment in EDUCATION sector is bigger problem because
primary+Secondary education makes ur identity.

Shobana Bharatia was nominated to Rajya Sabha by Congress Party in 2006. I feel this information is important.
Is it possible to find out how much money each newspaper gets in the name of advertisements from the government (both state
and central)?

What is the revenue model of NewsLaundry?I mean how NL is making money?Or is it nonprofit organisation.
Other than Google's Adsense ads(which is very badly placed on the top right corner of the site that is barely visible and no one
clicks) I don't see any other ads.If you are not getting profits how are you paying for the writers and journos.
And most important thing is on "About Us" page of NL website why haven't you mentioned Sekhri's AAP(Aam Aadmi Party)
affiliation.Aren't you doing the same thing as MSM(Mainstream Media) does, hiding the facts.
Lastly it's nice to see info-graphics on MSM family.Great job.
I hope Madhu Trehan and Sekri et al will answer my questions.

Hello Madhu. If you read any piece written by me (not only on Newslaundry but also in Indian Express & Outlook) i state
clearly that i am sympathetic to AAP and Arvind is a friend. Please do a little reading before typing, its a great habit. Our
ownership pattern will be on our about us and media ownership page. Unfortunately Mr. Poorie has not invested in us. But
if you can convince him to send a few crores our way i'd be thrilled. Our revenue model will be clear soon.... as soon as we
figure it out... but if you can contribute it would be great so we can stop bleeding.

I do support AAP too, but I think the point Madhu raised is valid. More than the About Us page, I think it would be
more apt for you to declare that here in this post. As you have done for other Congress MPs having relatives
owning stakes in different media enterprises, it would be proper for you to state your party affiliation (that is if you
are actually an AAP member, not only if you are sympathetic to it). Also, being snide aint the best way to reply to a
genuine post by a reader....

Abhinandan Sekhri 7 months ago Srivatsa Mahesh
Honestly i'm generally snide with all, friends and strangers. Also there is a difference in responding to a
query and an accusation. I dont think one need be oversensitive when one gets into an argument or debate.
If one makes an accusation one should be ready for a retort, polite or not. I dont whine, i dotn see why
anyone else should. If one cant take it in the jaw, dont get in the ring.

well like she mentions at the end of her post, its her questions she would like answered. I dont see any
accusation there! anyways, this isnt that important :) Im just happy AAP is doing relief work in Uttarakhand
and i will join them. Hope to see you there too! Keep up the good work on Newslaundy! Cheers, Srivatsa

AAP(Batla house terrorist supporter, Imam bukhari bootlicker) are doing relief work for becoming popular &
earning votes. There are others(RSS) who are doing relief without any expectation in return & they played
supportive role in 1962 war too. Its shameful that Khujaliwal blamed RSS for Gujarat riots(2002).
Abhinandan is a Moron & apologetic guy. When Ram Madhav(RSS) came on NewsLaundry, the only
question which this moron could ask him was - "why you wear Khakhi half-pants. It embarrasses
Macaulytes like me. Please copy english flag(like we youth put on our t-shirts) atleast. It also". Just like his
friend khujaliwal removed Bharat-Mata photo from stage to appease Imam Bukhari, Abhinandan is also
doing his part.
And talking about Madhu Trehan, oh she is still b1tching about MODI.

claw's question on FORD foundation & AAP. I have noticed you avoid tough questions even on twitter, so
much for your "don't come to ring" non-sense. Your personality is similar to Khujaliwal. High on arrogance,
low on intelligence.

Dear Sir , i have my reservations against AAP not because of corruption agenda , but because of their views
regarding Kashmir , FDI and on Naxals. if i need to make three division - 1. party does corruption even
compromising with national security - congress , ex 2G - Etisalat/unitech license , ramsetu .
2. party without corruption but has very dangerous views on matters which affects India's security - AAP.
3. Party does corruption but largely don't compromise in national interest and security- kashmir , ram setu , fdi in
retail.
with whom will you go . i too have some points of BJP which i hate , but still i feel they may be better for us.
dear sir , may i know your view on shri rajeev dixit ji , i am sure u must have heard him.

I like AAP (Kejriwal) and Newslaundry, but if you with your close proximity to Kejriwal own it (partly), how can there
be even a semblance of objectivity in your reporting? So disappointed to read this, but will give you full marks for
at least openly disclosing this!

3
Abhinandan Sekhri 7 months ago Guest
There can never be "objectivity" in reporting or in life. It's a philosophical position. AT best one can attempt
to be fair and that we try and do as do I. A good starting point is by being transparent and honest where the
bias lies. I dont hide where mine lies. If you're looking for a person without any bias... not on this planet with

That's a load of Communist+atheist bullshit u said there. "dude, we all suck, whole world sucks. Thats how
it is. Now come lets have a powder of dope".
This is how every issue/subject is turned into trivial thing. If everyone is biased, then there is no point of
having NewsLaundry at all. U just admitted that u r a person without any ideology. U just oppose every1 &
every ideology. (just like that moron khujaliwal does)
Everything works great for u, till some1 comes & points ur weakness. Then u reply - "oh but we all r biased".

Madhu Trehan nee Poorie belongs to the Thompson Press family which owns India Today,Headlines Today and you can
be sure they have pumped money into News Laundry. Is it a coincidence that Ms. Trehan never responds to such queries
and gets Sekri to handle this.

Abhinandan responding in person is much much better as compared with you asking silly questions and casting
aspersions on behalf of your masters from Congress-BJP-Alliance (CBA, elder sister of CBI) under an unregistered
account. Get some identity for yourself first, if you want to ask questions. Don't have guts to do so? File an RTI to
know the truth. Can't even do that? File RTI from RTI Anonymous. Can't/Won't do that. You are what you seem to
be, hence proved!
But then again, if there weren't people like you (some call them traitors, others call them stupid, usually both
qualities are found in cowards, no offence) in our country, Mr. Vadra wouldn't dare call our country a banana
republic. India recognizes and appreciates your contribution towards it's downfall!

Journaism is a public good. The more accountable media houses make themselves across the board, the more credible they will
be. Bias is not always ideology-driven, it can also be business-driven or both. Conflict of interest issues must be talked about not
in a for or against sense, but simply that they exist for x or y reasons. The public is alert enough to draw conclusions. Way to go
