here are a va-
riety of events
for everyone
around the region this
month.
The annual
Thanksgiving Feast
for the Animals will
return to the Folsom
Zoo Sanctuary this
year on Thanksgiving
Day.
This is a great way to take a break from
holiday cooking and watch as all the ani-
mals (bears, tigers and monkeys oh my!)
receive a festive Thanksgiving meal pre-
pared just for them by zoo staff and volun-
teers.
Folsoms Historic District will turn into a
winter wonderland as the ice rink returns
to Sutter Street Nov. 7. The ice rink will be
around the Historic Folsom Railroad Turn-
table again this year.
For those looking for a new sandwich
shop, Firehouse Subs recently opened at
1001 E. Bidwell St. in Folsom. Read the full
story inside.
Veterans Day will be remembered in
Folsom on Nov. 11, to honor local veterans
with a parade and remembrance ceremo-
ny. This years parade theme is Home of
the Free, Because of the Brave.
I look forward to seeing everyone out in
the community this month!

Thanksgiving Feast
Special Thanksgiving meals are prepared
for each animal and include some of their
favorite foods and seasonal treats.
Zoo staff and volunteers assemble complete meals
for each animal, turning out platters and bowls com-
plete with parsley and lemon-wedge garnishes.
The Thanksgiving tradition dates back to the mid-
1990s to help bring more attendance to the zoo.

T
he annual Thanksgiving Feast
for the Animals will return to the
Folsom Zoo Sanctuary this year on
Thanksgiving Day.
We hope the community can join us
for our annual tradition of a special cele-
bration for the zoo animals, said Lesley
Miller, with Folsoms Parks and Recreation
department. Families can watch as all the
animals receive a festive Thanksgiving meal
prepared just for them and some even get
special pumpkin pie.
The animals Thanksgiving feast will start
at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, at the
Folsom Zoo Sanctuary, at 403 Stafford St. in
Folsom. Regular zoo admission fees apply.
The Thanksgiving tradition dates back to
the mid-1990s to help bring more atten-
dance to the zoo.
Thanksgiving Feast for the animals en-
courages people to visit the zoo at a time
of year when theres typically a drop in at-
tendance, Miller said. The cooler months
of the year are actually some of the best
times to visit, since many of the animals are
more active and energized when its brisk
outside.
The special Thanksgiving meals are pre-
pared for each animal and include some
of their favorite foods and seasonal treats.
Zoo ofcials said its a unique opportunity
to watch the creatures enthusiastically dive
into their favorite goodies.
Since the Thanksgiving holiday is
focused around family, the zoo event is
a great way for the entire family to join
in an activity together plus get a little
fresh air and exercise as they walk the zoo
grounds, Miller said. Its also a day for
everyone to give thanks for our blessings,
and at the zoo, that includes the animals.
The Zoo docents are also on hand to an-
swer questions about the animals and talk
to visitors about the zoos mission.
The zoo provides the National Charity
League with a menu and recipes for each
animals meal, Miller said. The League buys
the food and makes the pies, stufng and
any other cooked items. Zoo staff and vol-
unteers then assemble the complete meals
for each animal, turning out beautifully
presented platters and bowls complete
with parsley and lemon-wedge garnishes,
Miller said.
Members of the community can help
by simply coming to the event with their
friends and family, and spending part of
their day watching and learning about the
amazing animals who live at the Folsom
Zoo, Miller said.

ts time for ice skaters to tie up their laces and slide onto the ice in
Folsom this holiday season, as the Folsom Historic District ice
rink returns to Sutter Street.
The ice rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day
including all holidays, Nov. 7 through Jan. 19. Ice skating session
times include 10 a.m., noon, and 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Adult
skating is $10 plus a $3 skate rental. For children 8 and younger
and seniors 62 and older, skating is $8 plus a $3 skate rental.
This is the fourth year Folsom has housed the ice rink
for the season.
The ice rink will be around the Historic Folsom
Railroad Turntable again this year, said Stephanie Rodgers,
Folsom Historic District director. She said she hopes the rink
will allow people to have a fun experience while getting ready
for the holiday season with skating, gift shopping and perhaps
relaxing with a hot chocolate along the street.
This district is beaming with charm, Rodgers said. The
ice rink brings our community together, and this is the driving
force behind all of the Folsom Historic District Association
events. Its a fun experience for families and friends to gather to enjoy
the holiday season, a birthday party or ice skate just for the fun of it.

F
or more than 25 years, Placerville has welcomed the holiday sea-
son with a special holiday event celebrating local entertainment,
a traditional tree-lighting near the historic Courthouse on Main
Street and a Merchants Open House.
The Placerville Downtown Association will host the Festival of
Lights, held on the Friday after Thanksgiving, said Lisa Crummett,
Placerville Downtown Association marketing director. This year, the
Festival of Lights will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, rain or shine.
The honorary celebrity at the event is a large, old, light-adorned
spruce tree across the street from the historic courthouse that is aglow
with colorful lights after the public countdown at 6 p.m., Crummett
said. In conjunction with the big tree lighting, more than 75 trees are
donated by El Dorado County Christmas Tree Growers are lit after the
countdown.
These trees are adopted and decorated by organizations and indi-
viduals through the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce.
The tree lighting is followed by a visit from a jolly fellow in a red
suit who sets up at River City Bank that evening, Crummett said.
Photos will be available, but are not required to visit Santa.
There will be a street closure between the Courthouse and Sac-
ramento Street to host performers in several different performance
locations on Main Street.
Wherever you are on Main Street, there are several chances to
enjoy the entertainment, Crummett said. In addition to the entertain-
ment, there are stagecoach rides from Davy Doc Wiser and his crew,
and this is also the rst day of the Merchants Open House, where
visitors can enjoy goodies from merchants, view beautifully decorated
windows, and start their holiday shopping.
Festival performers include The Placerville Gold Rush Chorus, El
Dorado High School Band, The Cantare Chorale and Jammin Dance
and Fitness.
There is so much planned for this free event that you will want to
bring the whole family to Main Street to enjoy the festival, Crummett
said.

Light up the Night at their annual dinner
auction.
Lets come together as a community to cele-
brate close to 30 years of making a difference in
our local communities, said Tammy Thompson,
Twin Lakes Food Bank executive director. This
will be a great evening of terric food, fellowship
and some outstanding bargains.
The Twin Lakes Food Bank provides seven
days worth of groceries to families in need,
along with fresh produce and fresh dairy. It also
provides clothing and basic living necessities to
those who use their services. The food bank sup-
ports families in need in Folsom, Orangevale, El
Dorado Hills and Granite Bay.
The evening will include live music by ML3, a
live auction hosted by Dave Bender from KOVR
Channel 13, dinner catered by Arlene Powers
Gourmet Cooking and a dessert buffet provided
by Sierra Moms Club.
Light up the Night starts at 5:30 p.m. Satur-
day, Nov. 1, at Oak Hills Auditorium, 1100 Blue
Ravine Road in Folsom. Tickets are $35.
This event is the food banks main fundrais-
er for the year, so we want to encourage many
people to attend, Thompson said. The fund-
raiser helps us keep the lights on and keep gas
in the trucks.
For those who can not attend the auction
dinner, Thompson said, there are other ways to
help.
People can still donate auction items or
make monetary donations online, Thompson
said. With the weather cooling down, the food
bank is also in need of material items including
clothing, coats, blankets, sheets, sleeping bags,
housewares and canned vegetables.

holiday party.
Cherry Blow Dry Bar opened in August and offers
women unique blow dry styles for $35.
To achieve optimum results, we use Kevin Murphy
products. Our experienced stylists can help clients
achieve red-carpet looks for any occasion, said owner
Brooke Knadle. Styles offered include sexy beach waves,
big and bouncy, chic up-dos and bohemian braids.
Cherry Blow Dry Bar tape-in extensions are also offered.
For anyone who wants more fullness, length or
thickness in their hair, tape extensions will instantly give
those benets, Knadle said.
Knadle said the salon has nine stylists, all of whom have
their cosmetology license.
We are an express service salon, Knadle said. Most
of our services take only 45 minutes to an hour. We
are the only salon in the area that strictly offers styling
without having to cut or color the hair. While we do offer
appointments, they arent necessary. Women frequently
come in when they dont feel like doing their hair, have
a special occasion to attend -- date night, a prom or a
wedding. We are also popular for bachelorette parties
and bridal showers. We also can accommodate bridal
parties and have the convenience of everyone getting
their hair done at the same time.
As a special treat, Cherry Blow Dry Bar is offering $25

We also have gift certicates that are great to give
someone for any occasion, Knadle said. We are now
offering the ability to book appointments in advance for
your holiday party needs.

KNOW AND GO
What: Firehouse Subs
Where: 1001 E. Bidwell St., Folsom
Info: (916) 984-0600
F
irehouse Subs recently opened in Folsom and
people are jumping onboard for the famous
restaurant.
The restaurant chain is famous for serving
premium meats and cheeses steamed piping hot
and piled high on a toasted sub roll, which is served
Fully Involved with fresh produce and condiments.
Founded by former reghting brothers, the
restaurants rehouse dcor is based on the
founding familys decades of re and police service.
Folsoms new location is decorated with reghter
memorabilia from the Folsom Fire Department.
The restaurant is at 1001 E. Bidwell St. in Folsom.
Owner Devin Brar said he is excited to bring
Firehouse Subs taste and avor to the city of
Folsom.
I thought Folsom would be a wonderful
location. This is a small, local community, and this
is something completely different than everything
else thats opening around Folsom, Brar said. We
hired all local community members and I will be
here every day at the restaurant. Its important for
me to be a part of my community. Its a good feeling
to get out there and help. I am looking forward to
working with the local Folsom Fire Department. The
department has been very helpful and involved with
our opening.
According to Brar, Firehouse Subs restaurants
boast a custom, hand-painted mural that pays
tribute to the local community. The Folsom mural
features the Folsom Fire Departments engine truck
atop of the historic 1917 truss Rainbow Bridge with
local reghters extinguishing a burning re below
the bridge. Chief mural artist Joe Puskas and his
team paint every mural from his studio at Firehouse
Subs headquarters. Since the opening of the rst
Firehouse Subs in 1994, Puskas has painted more
than 820 murals.
In 2005, Firehouse Subs created the Firehouse
Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission
of providing funding, life-saving equipment and
educational opportunities to rst-responders and
public safety organizations. Many rst responders
make do with older equipment and have limited
or no access to needed resources, but Firehouse
Subs Public Safety Foundation has given $11 million
to hometown heroes in 41 states and Puerto Rico,

Q. What makes your restaurant
unique?
A. Our taste separates us from other
sandwich shops. All of our meats are USDA
prime cut muscle meat. We slice them fresh
every day, and its never frozen. We provide
an experience for our customers. We want
to treat our customers like friends. You
wont see a sad face behind the counter.
Q. What is your signature menu item?
A. The Hook & Ladder sandwich, with
smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham
and melted Monterey Jack, served Fully
Involved with mayo, deli mustard, lettuce,
tomato, onion and a kosher dill pickle on
the side.
Q. What kind of atmosphere does your
restaurant offer?
A. We are a family-friendly restaurant
with lots of tables inside and outside on the
patio. We also have televisions inside for
sports enthusiasts. It looks like a rehouse
inside the restaurant kids love it. We also
give away a free plastic re hat to kids.
