Registration Information The non-refundable registration fee for the Parenting Education Toddler program is $60 and is due upon acceptance into the program. The last day to enroll in the 2014-15 program is March 20, 2014. If a student drops the class and then later decides to re-enroll, the student must pay the registration fee again. There is a $50 transfer fee to change school sites after August 15, 2014. Annual Tuition for the Parenting Education Toddler class is $450. Before starting class, students are required to pay the first and last month of tuition online with a Visa or MasterCard. Students may logon to the account that was created upon registration for the class and make the initial payment. Confirmation that this payment has been made must be received before a student may begin class. o To access that website, go to www.fcusd.org/adulted, click on the Preschool/Toddler Tab, click on the Click Here To Register and find the small Login in the upper right hand corner or use this link: http://register.asapconnected.com/default.aspx?org=1183.
Subsequently, monthly payments will be deducted on the 5th of each month from the card that was used to make the initial payment and they will be automatically charged from September 2014 through April 2015. If a student needs to change the Visa or MasterCard on file at any point, he or she may update the account information online. The student will logon to their account and click on the My Billing Info tab. This will allow the student to edit the existing credit card or enter a new one. If there are any questions, please contact the Adult School Office. Students who do not have a credit card will have to make special payment arrangements with the Adult School Office.

Chargeback Fee: Toddler payments are processed by ASA ONLINE REGISTRATION and will show as such on your credit card statement. Please note: You are enrolled in the Parent Education Toddler class, in which you (the adult) learn techniques to improve your parenting skills. The tuition and the registration fee do not qualify for Child Care Tax Credit. In order to qualify for this credit, according to the IRS (http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=106189,00.html): 1. The care must have been provided for one or more qualifying persons. A qualifying person is your dependent child age 12 or younger when the care was provided. Additionally, your spouse and certain other individuals who are physically or mentally incapable of self-care may also be qualifying persons. You must identify each qualifying person on your tax return. 2. The care must have been provided so you and your spouse if you are married filing jointly could work or look for work. Any money or non-cash supplies that are donated to the program may be eligible for tax credit; however, students should consult a tax expert. Program Add Policy The Parent Education Toddler program is a year-long program; however, students may enroll at any time up until March 20, 2015, space permitting. New students will be accepted on the 1 st and the 15 th day of each month. If a student wants to begin class on the 15 th , then the first month of tuition will be discounted and only $22.50 will be due (in addition to the $45 for the last month of tuition, for a total of $67.50). The initial payment and the required paperwork must be received in the Folsom Cordova Adult School Office before the student may start class. Program Drop Policy Sometimes life happens and it is necessary for students to disenroll. If you need to drop, you must provide at least two (2) weeks written notice. (In other words, you will need to submit written notice by the 15th of the month in order to not incur the next months tuition charges.) Please send an email to esmith@fcusd.org. The Folsom Cordova Adult School reserves the right to drop a student for nonpayment, non participation, or disruption of the class or school educational environment. Please see specific examples of reasons for being dropped under Classroom Rules.
Late Arrival Policy Parents need to model good attendance and punctuality for their children and their educational experience. Please bring your child to class on time so they can fully benefit from the day. Late arrivals often disrupt the learning environment. A continuous pattern of classroom disruption may warrant a discussion with the teacher and possibly result in disenrollment from the class. Page 6 Last updated: 6/12/14 Parent Education Philosophy One of the best ways to become an effective parent is to know your child. This class will help improve your parenting skills as you learn: How children develop, What their capabilities are at various stages of development, What the children do and do not enjoy, How to view your child as an individual, and How your child relates to others of the same age. This parent education class will cover both theory and practical application to help you understand child development and create exciting new activities for your child. Research and practice show that strong parent involvement and partnership with school are directly related to school quality, child development and student achievement. Your enrollment in this program is a wonderful way to begin what we hope will be many years of partnership with your local schools. You are your childs first and most important teacher. Parent-child activities done at home can result in life-long benefits for your child. The parenting class is a positive learning experience for both parent and child to: Make friends, Learn to work and play in a group, Experience and discover, See him/herself as a learner, and Observe children. Anything we do in class is not for an evaluation of skill, but for experience and sense of discovery. Each effort is warmly greeted with enthusiasm. We emphasize thinking and trying in a positive manner. The phrase age-appropriate is a key term. Our class task is not to push kids into activities their bodies are not ready to accept. Rather we as parent teachers try to enhance your childs natural development and sense of discovery. We discuss topics such as discipline, realistic expectations, age characteristics, special education, learning styles and kindergarten readiness. There are six basic core standards that will be taught in our Parent Education classes: 1. Child Development: The adult student will understand the developmental stages of his/her child and will be able to Design, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate learning centers for this age group. Understand speech and language development. Teach the children through play.
2. Positive Discipline: The adult student will understand what positive discipline is and apply it by Understanding their own parenting style and how it affects their discipline. Determining an appropriate response and/or consequence (modeling, problem solving, consistency, and using words). Folsom Cordova Adult School 2014-15 Parent Education Toddler Handbook
Page 7 Last updated: 6/12/14
3. Kindergarten Readiness: The adult student will understand what kindergarten readiness entails by Observing and identifying the emotional skills in a social setting (Independence, separation and maturity). Evaluating academic skills and concepts (colors, shapes, letters and numbers, etc.) and age level concepts (in and out, rhyming, opposites, patterns, scissor skills, name recognition, etc.). Evaluating adaptive skills such as the ability to dress, toilet, hygiene, feed oneself. Identifying the ability of the child to focus and learn in a group environment.
4. Literacy: the adult student will understand the role he/she has in a childs literacy and will Read age-appropriate materials. Provide a variety of materials (classroom libraries, felt stories, story boards, dictation stories, etc.). Gain read aloud techniques in order to hold the attention of a group of children.
5. Social Skills: The adult student will have a clear understanding of the importance of developmental levels of social interaction and will Recognize the importance of developmental levels of play (parallel play, social/ dramatic, etc.). Identify self regulation (sharing, turn taking, raising hands, personal space, focusing, and following directions). Practice using words to communicate.
6. Nutrition, Health, and Safety: The adult student will have the knowledge of safety, health and nutrition and apply this knowledge by Teaching safety (fire, stranger danger, parking lot, class and playground). Providing physical fitness in class for a healthy body. Discussing dental health and preventative hygiene (hand-washing, healthy attendance). Providing nutritious snacks for the children. Parent EducationToddler Class Starting the Day Please bring your child at the designated time and sign your child in on the attendance sheet. Circle Time During circle time, it is important that parents sit on the floor with the children. We try to schedule our circle times so there are a variety of activities to keep children interested, but sometimes they can become disruptive. Often, just the presence of a grown-up prevents discipline problems. Many times, a light pat on the back is all a child needs. Other times, you will need to quietly separate children. Occasionally, you may need to sit with a child in the back of the room to help him or her remember circle time manners. The more parents can use preventive discipline, the more positive the experience becomes for everyone and the more successful each child feels. Page 8 Last updated: 6/12/14 Field Trips Field trips are the beginning of social studies for a child. Social studies for this aged child should be centered on the home, the family, and the immediate community. On field trips, the children will gain a more in-depth experience. Parents are expected to attend field trips; it is part of your class. Teachers are not allowed to transport adult students and/or children in their cars for field trips or any other purpose. If you are transporting children in your car, we must have a signed Contract for Adult Activity Participation form on file. Also, you must have a car seat for each child you transport. Classroom Rules 1. Students (parents) may only bring water into the classroom. 2. No running or throwing objects in the classroom at any time. 3. All cell phones must be set on vibrate, if it is not completely turned off, during class hours. If there is an emergency call, the student will need to go outside to talk. 4. Children may not bring or build guns, knives, swords, etc. 5. Toys should not be used to poke, hit or interfere with another child and will be removed from children who use them in this way. 6. Excessive loudness or screaming is unacceptable and should be stopped and/or discouraged. 7. Toys should be played with in their designated areas. a. Large blocks are to be stacked at a safe height set by your teacher. b. An adult must be present at the designated station whenever in use. 8. Classroom books are to be kept in the book area. a. Children should be encouraged to sit and read a book. b. Parents should read a story to the children when needed. Playground Rules Parents need to help monitor the playground at all times! Sticks may not be used as toys on the playground. 3. Ropes are only to be used for jumping games. Ropes may not be tied to other children, tricycles, climbing equipment, or strung across the playground. Children may not run with ropes trailing behind them. Discipline Adult students (parents) and children may not behave in a way that disrupts or negatively impacts the educational environment of the classroom and/or the host school. Parents should feel free to guide and encourage children to behave in an acceptable, age-appropriate manner. You may need to: Folsom Cordova Adult School 2014-15 Parent Education Toddler Handbook
Page 9 Last updated: 6/12/14 Ask a child to choose a different center if he/she keeps others from learning or enjoying their time. Turn the situation over to the teacher if a problem seems to intensify.
If a child hurts another child, bites, or becomes overly physical he or she can be suspended from class. These behaviors are not viewed as abnormal and staying home from school is not intended as punishment. It is considered a remembering time to help facilitate an understanding of the importance of using words instead of biting or hitting. Our teachers will make every effort to be consistent and timely as well as communicate with the involved parties. Parent Dress Parents need to dress appropriately (in school attire). Remember you are a role model and want to dress equal to or higher than the school dress code. Child Dress Please dress your children in clothes that are appropriate for the weather and activities. We want the children to enjoy their class school time and not to worry about their clothes. Tennis shoes or other rubber-soled shoes are excellent. No slippery soles. No flip flops unless they have a heel strap. Birthdays You are invited to bring a special birthday treat for your childs birthday. Please coordinate with the teacher. Parking Please park only in the designated parking spaces. Please do not block fire lanes or buseseven for just a second. Never leave a child alone in a car. Siblings In general, only the enrolled toddler may attend the daily class and class parties. With prior teacher approval, other family members may attend. With prior teacher permission, sibling newborns who are attached (in a baby carrier) to mom may join the class as long as they do not disrupt the learning environment.
Helpful Suggestions for Parents Working with Young Children
1. Use a quiet voice. 2. Use few words and make the words count. 3. Speak only in a gentle voice in a childs presence. 4. Use positive statements such as, Put your napkins in the basket, rather than, Dont throw your napkin on the floor. 5. Be consistent. Children learn limits best when the limits are quietly and consistently enforced. Folsom Cordova Adult School 2014-15 Parent Education Toddler Handbook
Page 10 Last updated: 6/12/14 6. Allow children to work out their own problems whenever possible. 7. Redirect behavior whenever possible. Be certain a child knows and understands why his behavior is not acceptable. 8. Respect each child as an individual. Be as courteous and diplomatic as you would with an adult. 9. When disturbing outbursts occur, remove the child from the situation. It is difficult to calm a child in a group. 10. When dealing with a behavior problem, be certain that the way in which you handle the situation says, I dont approve of what you did; I still like you. Discover What Every Child Needs
Love Every child needs to feel that his parents love, want and enjoy him; that he matters very much to someone and that there are people near him who care what happens to him. Acceptance Every child needs to believe that his parents like him for himself, just the way he is, that they like him all the time, and not only when he acts according to their ideas or the way a child should act; that they always accept him, even though they may not approve of the things he does, that they will let him grow and develop in his own way. Protection/Security Every child needs to feel that his parents will protect him from harm, that they will help him when he must face strange, unknown and frightening situations. Independence Every child needs encouragement to explore new things. When parents display confidence in their childs ability, it nurtures their confidence and resulting independence. Faith Every child needs to have a set of moral standards to live by, a belief in human values such as kindness, courage, generosity, honesty and justice. Guidance Every child needs to have friendly help in order to learn how to behave toward persons and things. Grown-ups around him need to show him by example how to get along with others. Control Every child needs to know that there are limits to what he is permitted to do and that his parents will hold him to those limits. Although it is alright to feel jealous or angry, he will not be allowed to hurt himself or others when he has these feelings.
