To Whom It May Concern:
I served as legal counsel to Edmund Kelii Silva, Jr. for a number of years. I am writing to address the question of Mr. Silvas involvement with the Royal Kupuna Exchange. The simple truth is that Mr. Silva had no knowledge of or involvement with the Royal Kupuna Exchange during the period the Exchange was active. When I brought the use of his name by the Exchanges website to his attention, he directed me to take whatever measures I could to have his name removed from the website.
To the best of my knowledge, the Royal Kupuna Exchange was created in late 2001. Those involved apparently included Samuel Kaluna and John Dudoit.
It is worth noting that in the initial Internet presentation of the Exchange, Mr. Kaluna appears in the gallery of portraits otherwise composed of the Kings and Queen Liliuokalani. Mr. Silva does not appear in the presentation, either as King or in any other capacity.

My understanding is that the Royal Kupuna Exchange started out claiming to have gold certificates. When the certificates were revealed to be amateurish copies, the Exchange then claimed to be empowered to issue bonds backed by gold. The actual operation of the Exchange appears to have never been much more than a website that offered bonds supposedly backed by gold issued by people claiming to have restored the Kingdom of Hawaii government.
I was familiar with some of those involved in creating the Exchange because they served as representatives from the Island of Hawaii in the Legislature set up by the Lawful Hawaiian Government, a group seeking to restore the independence of the Kingdom from United States occupation. I participated in the same sovereignty effort and, because I lived on the Island of Hawaii, stayed in close touch with these representatives.
At one point, the representatives from our island decided to withdraw from the Lawful Hawaiian government. I agreed with their decision and also withdrew my participation.
Later, a mutual friend suggested I call Mr. Kaluna regarding new efforts being made. Mr. Kaluna told me that he and the rest of the original delegation from our island had formed a government, issued a proclamation, adopted a constitution, and selected Edmund Kelii Silva, Jr. as King. Mr. Kaluna asked me to get the King out of jail.
I did get in touch with the King and learned the story of his prosecution and imprisonment under a sentence of 24 years. The length of the sentence for a non-violent crime was the first clue for me that the prosecution had political motivations. The more I delved into the case, the clearer it became to me that what was at best a civil matter arising from a claim of a debt unpaid had been manipulated into a criminal prosecution designed to remove Mr. Silva from Hawaii and prevent his working on restoration of the Kingdom.
While I was working to gain parole for the King, I discovered that there were covert operations being run against him in the prison. These operations involved people pretending to be representatives of foreign governments offering the King recognition for the restored Kingdom and vast financial resources. These operations were designed to convince the King that he was moving forward with the restoration, when he was actually dealing with agents of the United States government. I have reason to believe that my communications with the King, even though attorney-client communications, were routinely reviewed by agents of the United States. Ultimately, all our communications were stolen by prison personnel from the Kings cell.
For something close to two years, I worked on securing the Kings parole. During that time, someone brought to my attention the website of the Royal Kupuna Exchange, which they believed was offering bonds unlawfully.
When I visited the website, I found that the website represented that the King was involved in the bond offering.
I contacted the King to learn the truth of the matter.
The King told me that he had never heard of the Royal Kupuna Exchange and that he had never given anyone permission to use his name to sell Kingdom bonds.
I then wrote a letter to the webmaster of the Royal Kupuna Exchange and asked him to either remove the Kings name or take down the site.
When I did not receive a response, I sent a demand letter stating my opinion that the site had defamed the King.
At that point, for whatever reason, the site was pulled down. Because it was published on the Internet, however, people had already downloaded the page and the page was cached on Internet servers. Also, by the time the site was taken down, people had seen the false claim that Mr. Silva was involved with the Exchange.
I made an effort to have the cached pages removed as well and the page indicating the Kings involvement with the Exchange is no longer found on the Internet. I have done my best to track postings referring to the website that included the King and communicate to the authors that the King had nothing to do with the Exchange. Some of those contacted did not correct their postings, so the defamation continues, apparently because it serves political ends.
More recently, I came into contact with people who were involved in the Royal Kupuna Exchange episode. While they were familiar with Mr. Kaluna and Mr. Dudoit, they had never heard of Mr. Silva being associated with the Exchange. At my request, these individuals have prepared affidavits that, as to the best of their knowledge, Mr. Silva had no involvement with the Royal Kupuna Exchange.
