Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9
Date: October 24, 2014
Time: 9:00 10.00 am

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Illustrate situations that involve direct variation
2. Value the significance of direct variation by realizing its use in real life situations
3. Apply the concept of direct variation in solving problems

II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Direct Variation
B. References:
Learners Material: page 194 - 205
Teachers Guide:
C. Materials: Overhead projector and personal computer

III. Learning Task
A. Motivation
Questions to Ponder:
- What are the relationships between the sides and the perimeter of the
squares?
- What is the ratio between the corresponding values P/s?
- Describe the graph

B. Presentation
1. Facilitate the discussion on direct variation
Definition:
A variable y varies directly as variable x if and only if y kx . The
constant k is called the proportionality constant.

Direct variation is also related to proportion. Let (x
1
,y
1
) and (x
2
, y
2
) be any
two solutions for y kx , then
1 1
y kx or
1
1
y
k
x
. Similarly you have
2 2
y kx or
2
2
y
k
x
. Since we can equate
1
1
y
x
and
2
2
y
x
to k , it follows
that
1 2
1 2
y y
x x
.
2. To test students understanding on the concept of direct variation this activity may
be helpful.
Activity: Its Your Turn!
1. The fare F of a passenger varies directly as the distance d of his
destination.
2. The cost C of fish varies directly as its weight w in kilograms
What kind of boats do
vampires like?

3. An employees salary S varies directly as the number of days d he has
worked
4. The area A of a square varies directly as the square of its side s
5. The distance D travelled by a car varies directly as its speed s
6. The length L of a persons shadow at a given time varies directly as the
height h of the person
7. The cost of electricity C varies directly as the number of kilowatt-hour
consumption l.
8. The volume V of a cylinder varies directly as its height h.
9. The weight W of an object is directly proportional to its mass m
10. The area A of a triangle is proportional to its height

C. Illustration and Examples

For class activity

Answer the questions below then transfer the letter associated to each question
to the box, which contains the correct answer to decode the key.

Y varies directly as x.
Find k when x = 3 and y
= 12.
S
Find the constant of if y =
48 and x = 6 if y varies
directly as x.
E
Y varies directly as x. Find y
if x = 3, when y = 5 if x =
2.
B
Find an equation of
variation if y varies
directly as x and y = 15
when x = 4.
S
Find in the proportion:

Write an equation for the
phrase: The electric
current in an electric
circuit varies directly as
the Voltage .
L
The perimeter of a square
varies directly as its side.
Find the constant of
variation.
S
If the constant of a direct
variation is , find x when
y = 10.
O
Write the equation of
variation: The distance (d)
in km covered by a train
varies directly as its speed
(s) in kph.
D
If the constant of variation

Elaboration:
The amount of paint p needed to paint the walls of a room varies directly as the
area A of the wall. If 2 gallons of paint is needed to paint a 40 sq meter wall, how
many gallons of paint are needed to paint a wall with an area of 100 sq. meters?

D. Summary/Conclusion
What have you learned from the lesson? Can you give real life examples
that shows direct variation.

IV. Evaluation

Give a short quiz.
1. A mailman can sort out 738 letters in 6 hours. If the number of sorted letters
varies directly as the number of working hours, how many letters can be sorted
out in 9 hours?
2. Jessie uses 20 liters of gasoline to travel 200 kilometers, how many liters of
gasoline will he use on a trip of 700 kilometers?
3. The shadow of an object varies directly as its height h. A man 1.8 m tall casts a
shadow 4.32 m long. If at the same time a flagpole casts a shadow 12.8 m long,
how high is the flagpole?
4. The pressure p at the bottom of a swimming pool varies directly as the depth d
of the water. If the pressure is 125 Pascal when the water is 2 meters deep, find
the pressure when it is 4.5 meters deep
5. Every 3 months, a man deposits in his bank account a savings of Php 5, 000.00. In
how many years would he save PhP 250, 000.00?

V. Assignment
Create a scenario of the task in paragraph form incorporating. GRASPS: Goal, Role,
Audience, Situation, Product/Performance, Standards. A sample has been provided
for you.
