GENERAL
PRECAUCIN
El equipo descrito por esta publicacin debi haber
sido seleccionado para su aplicacin especca y debe
ser instalado, operado y mantenido por personas cali-
cadas y capacitadas para entender cualquier riesgo que

INSTRUCTIONS
FOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
PELIGRO
Los Cortacircuitos Fusibles Tipo XS de S&C son disea-
dos para proteger equipo. Un cortacircuito fusible no
puede proteger personas por daos o electrocucin si los
contactos del cortacircuitos son energizados.
DANGER
S&C Type XS Fuso Cutouts are designed to protect
equipment. A fuse cutout cannot protect personnel from
injury or electrocution if contact is made with energized
circuits or hardware
GARANTIA
S&C ELECTRIC MEXICANA, S. de R.L. de C.V., ga-
rantiza este equipo contra defectos de materiales y mano
de obra por un perodo de UN AO a partir de la fecha
de adquisicin, bajo las condiciones siguientes:
1. Que sea seleccionado para su aplicacin especca, instalado y o-
perado por personas entrenadas y calicadas.
2. Que el montaje del equipo se efecte de acuerdo con las instruccio-
nes de montaje y las herramientas adecuadas.
3. La garanta de este Cortacircuitos Tipo XS de S&C, no tiene
validez, si se reemplazan partes no originales tales como tubos porta
fusibles, navajas, etc., o estas se usan en montajes de otras marcas.
WARRANTY QUALIFICATIONS
The warranty does not apply to S&C Fuse Cutouts - Type
XS, Outdoor Distribution when installed in conjunction
with fuse tubes or disconnect blades of other than S&C
manufacture, nor does it apply to S&C fuse tubes and
disconnect blades installed in fuse cutouts of other than
S&C manufacture.
IMPORTANT
Installed fuse tube should not be left in the open position
for an extended period of time, since water can damage
the tube liner.

IMPORTANTE
Instalados los porta fusibles no debern ser dejados en
posicin abierta por un periodo largo de tiempo, ya que
el agua puede daar la parte interna de los tubos de los
porta fusibles.

NOTE
The fuse tubes Type XS for three shot cutout, can be in-
stalled in conjunction with either design Type XS fuse cut-
outs. Never use another sort of fuse different from the speci-
ed for the three shot cutout.
NOTA
Nuestros tubos porta Fusibles Tipo XS para el Cortacir-
cuitos Fusible de 3 Disparos, pueden ser colocados en
nuestros cortacircuitos XS de modelos anteriores. Nunca
utilice otro tipo de portafusible que no sea el especicado
para el Cortacircuitos Fusible de 3 Disparos.
MONTAJE DE CORTACIRCUITO FUSIBLE
PASO 1
Sujete el cortacircuito con el herraje de montaje como se
ilustra en la gura No. 1
PASO 2
Monte el cortacircuito con el herraje de montaje como se
muestra en la gura No, 1, con tornillo cabeza de coche
tuerca, arandela de presin y arandela dentada. Esta sujecin
debe ser lo sucientemente oja para permitir el ajuste en
posicin correcta del cortacircuito. Observe que la posicin
correcta de la arandela dentada es entre la mnsula y el so-
porte de montaje del cortacircuitos fusible. Ver gura 1.

PASO 3
Gire el cortacircuito a una posicin que pueda proveer la
mxima facilidad de operacin y seguridad, apriete la tuerca
al tornillo.

MOUNTHING THE FUSE CUTOUT
STEP 1
Attach the fuse cutout to a suitable mounting bracket as
illustrated in Figure 1.
STEP 2
Mount the fuse cutout on the mounting bracket, as shown in
Figure 1, with the carriage bolt nut snug but loose enough for
pivot adjustment. Note the placement of the external-tooth
lock washer between the mounting brocket of fuse cutout
and the mounting bracket. See gure 1
STEP 3
Pivot the fuse cutout to a position that will provide maxi-
mum case of operation and securely tighten the carriage bolt
nut.

PASO 4

STEP 4
After the device is installed, be sure the fuse tube assem-
blies of the 3 cutouts are CLOSED and the reclosing arms
are OPEN. THIS IS THE OPERATING POSITION OF THE
DEVICE (See gure 2)
PASO 5
Efecte las conexiones elctricas, asegurndose de limpiar
los conductores de aluminio (en su caso) por medio de un
cepillo de alambre y aplique una pelcula antioxidante antes
de insertar tales conductores en los conectores del cortacir-
cuitos. Ver Figura 2.
STEP 5
Make electrical connections. Be sure to wire brush any
aluminum conductors and apply a coating of oxidation
inhibitor before inserting such conductor in the fuse cutout
connectors. (See gure 2).

INSTALACIN DEL ESLABON FUSIBLE EN
CORTACIRCUTOS SIN BARRA DE ARQUEO
PASO 1
Sujete manualmente el botn de contacto del Eslabn Fu-
sible y enderece cuidadosamente el cable.
PASO 2
Desatornille el tapn de la frula superior del porta fu-
sible. Deslice el cable del eslabn fusible desde la parte
superior del tubo porta fusible hasta el extremo inferior y
restrelo.
PASO 3
Coloque el tapn de la frula superior y apriete rme-
mente con una llave. Aoje la tuerca de sujecin del cable
localizado en el mun. Ver gura 2a.
INSTALLING THE FUSE LINK (FUSE
CUTOUTS WITHOUT ARC-SHORTENING ROD)
STEP 1
Hand tighten the contact button on the Fuse link and care-
fully straighten the cable.
STEP 2
Remove the cap from the upper ferrule of the Fuse tube
assembly. Slide the fuse link, cable end rst, into the top of
the fuse-tube assembly and retrieve it at the lower end.
STEP 3
Replace the fuse-tube cap on the fuse tube upper ferrule and
tighten the cap securely using a wrench. Loosen the cable
clamping nut on the trunnion. See gure 2a.

PASO 4
Gire el gatillo disparador totalmente hasta su tope (Ver
Figura 2a.). Mantenga el gatillo en su posicin y pase el
cable a travs del canal del gatillo y enrede el cable al birio
roscado en el sentido de las manecillas del reloj, como se
muestra en la Figura 2b. Mantenga la tensin del cable y
apriete rmemente la tuerca de sujecin del cable usando
una llave. No se exceda en el apriete de la tuerca.
PASO 5
Corte el exceso de cable dejando 1.2 cm, a partir de la
tuerca.

STEP 4
Rotate the ipper fully about its pivot until it reaches its
stop (rm resistance is felt) (See gure 2a.) Hold the ipper
in this position, and feed the cable through the ipper chan-
nel and around the threaded stud in a clockwise direction as
shown in Figure 2b.
Maintain tension on the fuse link cable and rmly tighten the
cable clamping nut, using a wrench. Do not overtighten the
cable clamping nut.
STEP 5
Clip excess cable to within 1/2 inch of the nut.

INSTALACION DE ESLABON FUSIBLE
(Cortacircuitos con barra de arqueo)
Corta circuitos Fusible que tengan barra de arqueo requi-
eren de que se quite el botn de contacto del eslabn
fusible.
PASO 2
Desatornille el tapn de la frula superior del portal fusible
y presione la varilla acortadora de arco contra el tapn.
PASO 3
PRECAUCIN
No use un tapn normal. Use el tapn con barra de ar-
queo, use la barra de arqueo adecuada para la interrupcin
total.
Atornille la varilla acortadora de arco al eslabn fusible
y apriete manualmente. Deslice este conjunto desde la par-
te superior del tubo porta fusible hasta la parte inferior y
restire. Contine con los pasos 3, 4 y 5 de la seccin anterior.
INSTALACIN Y CIERRE DEL PORTAFUSIBLE
Unicamente personas calicadas debern operar, inspeccio-
nar o darle mantenimiento a un cortacircuito. Tales personas
calicadas, debern usar equipo de proteccin como guantes
de hule, casco, gafas de seguridad o ropa no amable, etc.,
de acuerdo a lo establecido en las normas de seguridad y al
entrenamiento para su propia seguridad.
PELIGRO
Cuando se cierre un Cortacircuito Fusible el operador
deber estar fuera de la trayectoria de fuga de gases.
INSTALLING THE FUSE LINK
(Fuse cutouts with arc-shortening rod)
Fuse cutouts having an arc-shortening rod require the use
of removable buttonhead fuse links.
STEP 1
Remove and discard the contact button (and washer, for fuse
links so equipped) and then carefully straighten the cable.
STEP 2
Unscrew the cap on the upper ferrule of the fuse tube as-
sembly and retract the arc-shortening rod (attached to the
cap).
STEP 3
CAUTION
Do not use a standard cap in place of a cap with an arc-
shortening rod. Use of the arc-shortening rod is required
to achieve the full interrupting rating.
Screw the arc-shortening rod onto the fuse link and hand
tighten. Then slide this assembly, cable rst, into the top of
the fuse tube and retrieve the cable at the lower end. Con-
tinue with Step 3 the preceding section.
INSTALLING AND CLOSING THE FUSE TUBE
Only qualied persons should operate, inspect, or maintain
a fuse cutout.
Such qualied persons should wear protective equipment
such as rubber gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, ash-
clothes, etc., in accordance with established safety-practices,
and be trained in their proper care.
DANGER
When closing a fuse cutout, all personnel should be
positioned well clear of its exhaust path.

PASO 1
Despus de instalar el eslabn fusible como se describe
en la seccin correspondiente, inserte la punta de la prtiga
dentro de la abertura del mun (Ver g. 3), o tambin puede
insertar la punta en el ojal del mun.
PASO 2
Con ayuda de la prtiga, monte el porta fusible a la percha
del cortacircuito como se muestra en la gura 3 y posterior-
mente, desenganche la prtiga.
PASO 3
Inserte la punta de la prtiga en el arillo de empuje de la
frula superior del tubo porta fusible y gire el tubo aproxi-
madamente a 45 de la posicin de cierre total. Despus, te-
niendo cuidado de no mirar hacia el cortacircuito, con un
golpe vigoroso cirrelo. Desenganche cuidadosamente la
prtiga para no abrir el porta fusible.

STEP 1
After installing the fuse link as described in the foregoing
sections, insert the prong of a hook stick into the opening un-
der the trunnion casting band. Or, as an alternate, insert the
prong in the key hole opening in the trunnion casting band.
STEP 2
Guide me fuse tube into the fuse cutout hinge as shown in
Figure 3 and disengage the hook stick
STEP 3
Insert the prong of the hook stick in the pull ring on the up-
per ferrule of the fuse tube and swing the fuse tube to within
approximately 45 of the fully closed position. Then, while
looking away from the fuse cutout, drive the fuse tube to the
closed position using a vigorous thrust. Carefully disengage
the hookstick taking care to avoid opening the fuse tube.

interrumpir corrientes de carga sin saber usar la herra-
mienta para desconectar tal como la Loadbuster de S&C,

WARNING
Do not attempt to open S&C Type XS Fuse Cutouts to
interrupt load current, without the use of a load break tool
such as S&Cs Loadbuster. An arc started by opening a
fuse cutout under load without a load break tool could
cause injury or damage to equipment.

La herramienta Loadbuster de S&C, es ideal para usarse
en la apertura de los porta fusibles en Cortacircuitos Tipo XS
de S&C (u otros cortacircuitos y cuchillas desconectadoras,
diseado para usar herramientas Loadbuster). La Loadbuster
es el mtodo nico de S&C de operar a bajos costos y alargar
la vida.
De la capacidad interruptiva de estos aparatos, se proporcio-
na las instrucciones de uso de herramienta Loadbuster con
Cortacircuitos Tipo XS. A continuacin siguiendo a la ope-
racin de apertura usando la herramienta Loadbuster, el tubo
porta Fusible puede ser sacado de la percha del cortacircuito,
usando la punta de la prtiga (Ver gura 3).
IMPORTANTE
Un tubo porta fusible no deber ser dejado abierto por
un periodo largo de tiempo, ya que el agua puede daar
la parte interna del mismo.
OPERACIN CON LOADBUSTER
Verique el funcionamiento apropiado de la Loadbuster,
jalando el cilindro superior aproximadamente 8 cms
manualmente y durante este recorrido se deber sentir la
resistencia a vencer, del resorte interior.
PASO 1
Ponga en frente del cortacircuito la Loadbuster e introduzca
el arillo del mismo al gancho ms alejado del cortacircuito
(Ver Figura 4).
PASO 2
Gire la Loadbuster hacia el porta fusible e introduzca la
aldaba de la Loadbuster en el arillo de la frula superior. La
aldaba deber entrar totalmente y cerrarse sobre el anillo de
la frula. La Loadbuster est ahora conectada a travs del
gancho al contacto superior riel cortacircuito (Ver gura 4).
PASO 3
Abra el cortacircuito jalando la Loadbuster, con la suciente
fuerza para que se extienda totalmente a su mxima longitud
(Ver gura 5), evite vacilaciones. Un seguro mantendr
abierto el cortacircuito. Generalmente no habr indicaciones
de interrupcin del cortacircuito elctrico, pero la conmu-
tacin del arco puede ser notado en el arillo de la Loadbuster
y el anillo de la frula, particularmente cuando se inter-
rumpen corrientes de carga cercanas a la capacidad mxima
de la herramienta. El nico sonido deber ser el disparo del
resorte del Loadbuster.
S&Cs Loadbuster is ideally suited for use in opening the
fuse tube of S&C Type XS Fuse Cutouts (or other fuse cut-
outs and disconnects designed for use with Loadbuster),
Loadbuster is S&Cs unique method of providing low-cost,
positive and convenient live.
Switching capability for such devices. Instructions for use
of Loadbuster with S&C Type XS Fuse Cutouts are shown
below.
Following an opening operation using Loadbuster, the fuse
tube can be lifted out of the fuse cutout hinge using the prong
of a hookstick. See Figure 3.
IMPORTANT
A fuse tube should not be left in the open position for
an extended period of time, since water can damage the
tube lining.
OPERATING WITH LOADBUSTER
Check for proper resetting of the Loadbuster by extending
the tool about three inches by hand. Throughout this travel,
an increasing spring resistance should be felt.
STEP 1
Reach across in front of the fuse cutout with Loadbuster
and hook the anchor, located at the top of Loadbuster, over
the attachment hook on the far side of the fuse cutout. See
Figure 4.
STEP 2
Swing Loadbuster toward the fuse tube and pass the Load-
buster pull-ring hook through the pull ring on the fuse tube.
The pull-ring latch will deect and upon complete entry of
the pull ring, will spring back, locking Loadbuster to the pull
ring. Loadbuster is now connected across the upper contact
of the fuse cutout. See gure 4.
STEP 3
To open the circuit, operate Loadbuster with a rm, steady
pull until it is extended to its maximum length. See gure 5.
Avoid jerking and hesitation. The resetting latch will keep it
open. Generally, there will be no indication of circuit inte-
rruption, but communication arcing may he noted at the pull-
ring hook and at the anchor, particulary when interrupting
load currents approaching the rating of the tool. The only
sound will be that of Loadbuster tripping.

PASO 4
Desprender la Loadbuster despus de desconectar el cir-
cuito. Primero elvelo ligeramente y desenganche el arillo
del cuerno de jacin.
CUIDADO
Al elevar la Loadbuster la distancia de apertura se reduce.
Un manejo sin cuidado podra provocar un arco.
Siga abriendo el tubo porta fusible totalmente como se ve
en Fig. 6 quite el Loadbuster del arillo del porta fusible gi-
rando el Loadbuster hasta liberar la aldaba.
PASO 5
Para preparar la Loadbuster para la siguiente operacin,
proceda como se indica. Extienda ligeramente la Loadbuster
y con el dedo pulgar jale el restablecedor y con l fuera, la
Loadbuster regresa a su posicin volvindose a restablecer.
Verique que la herramienta est lista para volver a usarse,
extendiendo el pistn aproximadamente 8 centmetros. A
travs de este recorrido, deber sentirse la resistencia del
resorte.

STEP 4
To detach Loadbuster after circuit interruption, rst raise
it slightly and disengage the anchor from the attachment
hook.
WARNING
When Loadbuster is raised the open gap distance is re-
duced. Careless manipulation could decrease the open
gap to the point where ashover will occur.
Next, bring the fuse tube toward its fully open position as
illustrated in Figure 6. Then remove Loadbuster from the
pull ring by turning the pole. This will deect the pull ring
latch to release the pull ring. Because the fuse tube will drop
fully open by gravity, it may be preferred to remove Load-
buster by rolling it off both the attachment hook and pull
ring at the same time merely by twisting the pole after Load-
buster has been tripped and fully extended. To perform this
operation easily and smoothly, always roll Loadbuster so
that it rotates in an upward direction.
STEP 5
To reset Loadbuster for the next operation, hold as shown
in Figure 7. Extended the tool slightly and lift the resetting
latch with the thumb. With the latch up, telescope the tool
completely so the trigger can reset itself. Check for proper
resetting by extending the tool about three inches. Through-
out this travel an increasing spring resistance should be left.
