HECKER QUOTE
The trials and sufferings of the faithful are the first steps toward a better
state of things. They detach from earthly things and purify the human side of
the Church. From them will proceed light, and strength, and victory. (The
Church and the Age, 1887)

If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill,
and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul
Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time ! Sunday October 26, 2014

Greetings!
Pastoral Corner
So what happened at this Extraordinary Synod on Family Issues?
I think just what Pope Francis specifically asked for when he prayed for parresia (openness). In his welcoming
speech, Pope Francis clearly said that he wanted people to say what was on their minds in rel ation to family pastoral
ministry: cohabitation, divorce, re-marriage, polygamy, arranged-marriages, LGBT issues, children, contraception..
No holding back.
Unfortunately, in prior Synods the participants were told what could be brought up what could be talked about.
It was all done from paper-work. Instead, the Pope in his final address to the participants said that, Personally, I
would be very worried and saddened if it were not for these temptations and these animated discussions ---if all were
in a state of agreement, or silent in a false and quiet peace. Instead, I have seen and I have heard ---with joy and
appreciation---speeches and interventions full of faith, of pastoral and doctrinal zeal, of wisdom, of frankness and of
courage.
Was there division in the ranks? Yes, there was and it will probably continue because that will encourage more
dialogue. And we are better off because of those debates and divisions. We need our doctrines ---which incidentally,
do grow with enhanced knowledge and understanding as time goes by. And we need brave people who see beyond
the laws---just like Jesus had to do once in a while. The challenge will be for all sides to work together to be examples
of the teaching of Jesus----taking people where-ever they are on their journey in faith. I loved that we were seeing all
sides of the issues discussed---good, bad and yes ---there was some real ugly statements. But it was there---for the
first time in a Synod for everyone to hear. And the Pope wanted all the statements recorded (even the ones that didnt
pass by 2/3 vote) and the names of the Bishops and who voted for/against each item.
Whats next? All the participants go back to their homes ---Bishops, Cardinals, etc. --- and they talk amongst
themselves. Some trying to win-over others to their side of the debate. In the meantime, the World Meeting of
Families will take place in Philadelphia in September 2015 and the Pope is invited. Theyll have opinions too.
The next part of the Synod talks will be in October 2015 when some of these same participants (and some new
Bishops) will gather in Rome again to continue these discussions/debates.
After that Synod-- Pope Francis will issue an apostolic exhortation---his teachings on all the topics discussed.
Until then---the debates continue. Thank God for Pope Francis transparency!

Deo Gratias-----Barbara Harrison
