Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor Market Overview
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are rapidly gaining in popularity in Appliances, Automotive,
Aerospace, Consumer, Medical, & Industrial Automation equipment.
They offer numerous advantages over traditional brushed DC & induction motors.

* Better speed versus torque characteristics

* Higher speed ranges (no mechanical limitation imposed by brushes/commutator)
* Increased reliability & longer operating life (less maintenance due to absence of brushes)
* Noiseless operation & Higher ratio of torque delivered to motor size (good for space/weight limited applications)

Industrial Automotive
•Reduced power consumption - intelligent motor control •2.2B motors sold in 2008 (62% Brush, 32% Stepper,
improves efficiency by 30 percent or more, variable 6% Brushless). 3.1B forecast for 2016 (65% Brush, 25%
speed motor control with inverter-based drive systems Stepper, 10% Brushless).
•Recued system & development cost – more on-chip •Automotive Motor Control Applications include HVAC,
peripherals to reduce component count, libraries and Electric Seats, Electric Roofs, Clusters, Door locks,
reference designs for common functions Brake by Wire.., around 34 motors in a car.
•Reuse software, hardware and tools across platforms – •BLDC market mainly includes: Water/Fuel pump,
support multiple motor types with one unified platform, ECU/HVAC Fan Control, Valve Control, Electric seats,
tools to develop increasingly complex algorithms window lift. Expected to grow from 127.5m # in 2008 to
292.5m # in 2016 (including PMSM motor).
•Cost-effective safety, reliability and security - IEC
regulatory approval requires single-bit failure detection
