Napoleon Hill said, Create a defnite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once
whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action. Tis is True. We all need to
prepare...to make a plan to store up food for the short term of 3 days, then build up to six
weeks, and ultimately store food for 3 years.

Te Disaster Dozen Top Twelve Myths
of Disaster Preparedness
by Paul Purcell
Hurricane Katrina and oth-
er recent disasters, such as Hurricane
Sandy, have given us a long series
of disaster preparedness wake-up
calls. Why do we keep hitt i ng
the snooze button?
Pus hi ng
past the debates
over govern-
ment reaction,
we come to the
bottom line con-
clusion that, Yes,
more could have
been done.
In other arti-
cles well get into
some of those de-
bates, but for now, lets l o o k
at the most important part of a com-
prehensive emergency readiness
plan, and that is the preparedness
levels of individuals and families.
We fnd that the biggest
obstacles to comprehensive family
emergency readiness education are
the misconceptions surrounding the
true nature of preparedness. So, to
set the stage for better
education, and ul-
timately better
public safety, lets
take a look at some
of these myths.
1. If something
happens all I have
to do is call 911.
Help can only
go so far, or be
there so quickly.
Security, like charity,
begins at home and the
r e - sponsibility for your familys
safety rests on your shoulders. Tis
isnt to say that you shouldnt call

DOZEN from Cover
for help when its truly needed, its to
remind you that you may be on your
own for while, especially if the situ-
ation is an expansive or severe one.
2. All I need is a 72-hour
kit with a fashlight, frst aid kit,
some food and wa-
ter, and a radio.
Were not sure where
the 72 hour fgure
came from, but its an
extremely minimal
amount of time and
not very realistic. A
more practical goal
is to be self-sufcient
for a minimum of 2
weeks. Why 2 weeks?
As bad as Katrina
was, there are numerous disaster
and terrorism scenarios that could
see substantially more damage, and
a disruption of local services for
three weeks or more. Also, many bi-
ological scenarios may see a 2-week
quarantine. Regarding supplies and
equipment, avoid the one-size-fts-
all simpleton lists and customize
your disaster kit to ft your familys
unique threats, needs, and assets.
3. My insurance pol-
icy will take care of everything.
SWAT teams of insurance agents arent
going to instantly rebuild your life like
on TV. Insurance companies will be
far more concerned about their own
bottom line than yours. In fact, many
insurance companies are rewriting
policies to redefne some rather com-
mon terrorism or disaster related inci-
dents as being excluded and not cov-
erable. Check your policies closely!
4. Good preparedness is
too expensive and too complicated.
Nothing could be further from the
truth. Te problem is, we havent
made preparedness a part of our
overall education. We get more pre-
paredness info on an airline fight
than we get as citizens. Most of us
arent taught that there are literally
thousands of subtle, simple, and eco-
nomical things we can do to drasti-
cally improve our emergency readi-
ness. Te notion that
it might be expensive
or complicated has
come from compa-
nies that aggressively
market high-priced
unnecessary gear.
5. We can only
form a Neighbor-
hood Watch group
through FEMA,
the Red Cross, or
local Law Enforcement.
Neighbor helping neighbor is one
of our highest civic duties. No one
regulates this and you dont have
to get anyones permission to co-
ordinate your safety with others.
Working with these groups is rath-
er advantageous, but not required.
6. In a Weapons
of Mass Destruction terror-
ist attack, were all dead anyway.
WMDs might kill larger numbers
of people, but that doesnt mean
widespread destruction is a guaran-
teed thing. In fact, for widespread
destruction, a top-grade WMD must
be expertly and precisely applied un-
der ideal conditions. Tis does not
mean that WMDs are to be ignored
or that theyre nothing to fear, its
just that Mass Destruction does
NOT mean Total Destruction at all.
7. Nothing like
that could ever happen here.
Tough some areas are more prone
to certain types of disasters, say
earthquakes in California, or terror
attacks in New York, no area on earth
is completely immune. Too, with
as much as people travel, you might
travel somewhere and wind up in a
disaster you never thought about.
8. All I have to wor-
ry about is my own family.
Technically yes, but the more youre
able to care for your own family, the
more you can and should help others.
9. If prepared-
ness were really important it
would be taught in school.
Preparedness really is that import-
ant, but schools have only so much
time and budget to teach the things
they already do. Tis is one of the
many things were trying to change,
but for now, youre going to have
to not only realize the importance
of thorough emergency readiness,
but to teach your family yourself.
10. I can get free prepared-
ness information on the Internet.
Many free sources contain really good
information. However, it takes time
and experience to flter the trash from
the treasure. Worse, some of these
free sites have information that
could actually cause more problems
than they cure. Tis is why we spent
years in gathering the over 400 ad-
ditional books and training manuals
on the CDs in Disaster Prep 101.
11. Full prepared-
ness means I have to get a lot
of guns and be a Survivalist.
While personal security and fami-
ly safety are valid concerns, the vast
majority of people around you will
not be a threat. In fact, though loot-
ers gained a lot of media attention
afer Katrina, there were far more
numerous stories of heroism. We
suggest you balance your person-
al security needs with your desire

What Exactly is Prepping?
Simply put, prepping
means that you live your life to-
day but prepare now for any disas-
ter that may strike tomorrow. Being
prepared gives you three distinct
advantages in case of emergency:
When news of an impend-
ing disaster breaks, most people
rush out and clean the shelves of
local grocery and hardware stores.
Stores only stock so
much and in these situations,
they generally dont have enough
to meet the needs of everybody.
1) If youre already
stocked, you wont have to worry
about whether or not youll be able
to get what you need to survive.
2) If disaster strikes quick-
ly and you cant get out to stores
and medical facilities, youll al-
ready have what you need and know
what to do to ensure your survival.
3) You wont have to waste
what little bit of advance notice
that you get fghting other unpre-
pared people for necessary sup-
plies and staples. You can concen-
trate on last-minute preparations
such as battening down the hatches.
Also, youre not placing additional
burdens on a system that will already
be taxed to the point of breaking.
02) Fify-Five Degrees

Hydrogen peroxide is a sta-
ple in almost every home frst aid kit.
While this product kills germs and
protects your body from infections,
its use spans far deeper than cleaning
scraped knees. Tis common house-
hold product can be used for anything
from whitening your teeth to cleaning
stains out of clothes. Continue to ex-
plore several surprising uses from this
simple water and oxygen compound.
Teeth Whitening Agent Swish
Away the Stains
Te primary ingredient
in most whitening toothpastes and
products is hydrogen peroxide. Ob-
tain the whitening power of this
simplistic compound, without pay-
ing the high price tag many of these
products demand, by using hydrogen
peroxide as an occasional mouth-
wash. Tis compound whitens teeth
by naturally bleaching its surface
through oxygenation. Not only will
your teeth shine like the sun, but its
anti-bacterial qualities help prevent
the formation and/or progression of
gum disease and bad-breath bacteria.
How to Use
* Brush your teeth with
your standard toothpaste.
* Mix 1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen
peroxide with 2 teaspoons of water.
* Pour in your mouth and swish for 30
to 60 seconds DO NOT SWALLOW
* Rinse with water and repeat
two to three times per week.
Cleanliness is Next to Godliness
Powerful Disinfectant
Clean your counter-tops and
other non-porous surfaces by com-
bining 2 part hydrogen peroxide with
1 part water. Combine these ingredi-
ents in a spray bottle, and spray onto
counters, glass surfaces and mirrors.
Have a tough stain? Spray
pure 3% hydrogen peroxide directly
onto the stain and allow it to sit for
up to fve minutes. Disinfect your
refrigerator, or even lunch box-
es, by cleaning with this solution.

Its Time to Clear the Air Remove
Airborne Germs from Your Home
Place 1 pint of 3% hydro-
gen peroxide for every gallon of wa-
ter within your humidifer. Allow the
humidifer to continuously run. Te
anti-bacterial and disinfecting prop-
erties of hydrogen peroxide gently in-
fltrate the room to prevent airborne
germs from infltrating your home.
Note: Tis is an excellent way
to prevent colds and other sicknesses
from lingering in your home or ofce.
Wash Away the Pesticides Vegeta-
ble Cleaner
Fresh vegetables are of-
ten produced using spray pesti-
cides and other potentially harmful
chemicals. Prevent these, and any
germs, from infecting your fami-
ly by adding ? cup of 3% hydrogen
peroxide into a large mixing bowl.
Combine with 3 cups of water and
soak fruits and vegetables for 20 to
30 minutes. Rinse and refrigerate.

And the weeds of the garden shall
be visited upon the gardener.
I can certainly think of
the 7+ weedy sins of the garden but
knowing how to cleanse my gar-
den of these weeds is even better.
Especially if it can be done cheap-
ly and with household items. Mur-
dering weeds is a fun past time.
So, for your reading en-
joyment, here are Te 7 Deadly
Homemade Weed Killers, guaran-
teed to help you
eradicate the
weeds you fnd
in your garden.
1) Boil-
ing Water Yep,
thats right. Plain
old H2O can be
used as an ex-
tremely efective
weed killer. As
a matter of fact,
boiling water
is more efec-
tive than many
of your store
bought weed
killers in wip-
ing out unwant-
ed vegetation.
Easy-peasy to do. Put a kettle of tap
water on the stove and heat till boil-
ing, then pour on the weeds you wish
to kill. You are efectively cooking the
plant in the ground. Boiling water is
a great way to clear out vegetation on
a wholesale basis, like driveways and
sidewalks. But be warned, boiling wa-
ter is not selective. It will cook and
instantly kill any plant that it comes
in contact with and this includes un-
derground roots of nearby plants.
2) Bleach Not only is
bleach a spot remover, it is a weed re-
mover as well. Place some bleach in a
spray bottle and spray on the weed you
wish to remove. Te bleach chemicals
will evaporate or dissipate in about
two days (or less but better safe than
sorry), making the area safe for plant-
ing. Again, bleach will kill anything
but if you do get some on a plant you
want to keep, just wash the plant of.
3) Vinegar Vinegar is a
great organic homemade weed kill-
er. Either white or cider vinegar will
work. Te acetic acid in the vinegar
works to kill the leaves on the plant
but not the root. Vinegar will kill back
(kill the leaves but not the root) any
plant but works best on young plants
because they do not have enough
energy stored in the roots to regrow
their leaves. If vinegar is applied
to more established weeds enough
times, the plant will eventually de-
plete its stored energy reserves and die
4) Salt It was once a known
war tactic to salt the felds of enemies.
Salting the earth was also used as
punishment for severe crimes in sev-
eral countries throughout history. Te
reason is because salt will kill plants
and will make the ground unsuitable
for future plant growth. On a small
scale, you can drop a small pinch of
table salt at the base of the undesirable
plants. It will kill the plant but will di-
lute down to harmless in the next few
rainfalls. On a larger scale, you can
cover your gravel
driveway or your
exs yard with a
good amount of
salt and noth-
ing will grow
there for months.
(FYI, it is illegal
to salt another
persons prop-
erty. Its called
v a n d a l i s m. )
5) Rub-
bing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol
is used around
the house because
it draws water
out and helps
to evaporate it
quickly. Guess
what? If you put it on a plant, it will
do the same thing. You will be basi-
cally sucking the life blood out of the
weed. Makes you want to run right
out and try it, huh? But again, rubbing
alcohol is non-selective. It will kill
any vegetation it comes contact with.
6) Corn Meal Corn meal
doesnt really kill weeds, it just stops
the weed seeds from ever develop-
See WEED Page 8
The 7 Deadly Homemade Weed Killers
Page 8
North of HWY 90
ing. Corn Gluten is a pre-emergent,
which is a fancy way of saying that is
it is a seed birth-control. Corn meal
scattered around an area will keep
any seed in that area from growing
into a plant. Tis means a weed seed
or a desirable seed. Tis method
is a good option for areas that you
plan on planting grown plants in.
7) Newspaper If murder-
ing your weeds with chemicals is not
your style, you can always smother
them. Laying down a layer of newspa-
per at least 4 sheets thick (the more
the better) will go a long way towards
killing the weeds underneath. Te
weeds that are already there will die
from lack of sun and the weed seeds
will not be able to sprout because they
are not getting any sun to start with.
As an added bonus, many
of these 7 homemade weed killers
can be combined to produce super
results. For example, the boiling wa-
ter can be mixed with the salt or the
vinegar (or both) for a super weed
killer. Use common sense when
combining chemicals and make sure
that there are no adverse reactions.
You can also add a few
drops of liquid dish soap to the liq-
uid homemade weed killers for
added efectiveness. Te soap is
not harmful to the weeds but the
soap acts as a sort of bonding agent
and will help the weed killers to
stick to the weed more efectively.
Since most of these home-
made weed killers are all-or-nothing
weed killers, you may want to use a
weed killer shield with them to prevent
sprays and splashes on desirable plants.

it is one of the southernmost U.S.
west-to-east routes in the rest of the
United States. Highway 90 passes
through the county seats of all 15
counties on its course in Florida, not
to mention being the address of al-
most every county courthouse, and
is never more than six miles (10 km)

of the sparsely populated inland ar-

Shelter
Some would argue food and water
should be at the bottom, or the most
important. I think shelter gets the
nod for the foundation because if
your homestead is where you want it
to be and fully functional, everything
else should fall in line. Why do you
think people put so much time and
efort into moving to the redoubt,
places like Idaho or Wyoming. If
your shelter (homestead) is good to
go food and water naturally should
follow. You will hopefully have a
well on site (or have access to some
form of non-stagnant surface water)
and youll be able to grow food and
raise animals. It all starts with shelter.
Food and Water
Next up the pyramid are your
life support items in the form
of food and water. If you are
prepping you need to put
special emphasis here, es-
pecially considering what
is going on lately with the
droughts and the possi-
bility of soaring food
prices. Having a stock-
pile of food is essential
to survival when times
get tough and I doubt
anyone would argue against
the importance of having fresh
water to drink and cook with.
Protection
Guns and ammo! Probably one of
the most popular prepping topics
even though it is not the most im-
portant. Remember protection isnt
always about defeating a threat with
frearms, its also about detecting and
deterring that threat. Operational
Security (OPSEC) is crucial in help-
ing you protect your loved ones. Be
careful who you share information
with and who you choose to trust.
Medical & Hygiene
Ofen overlooked in many Prep-
per stashes are medical and hygiene
supplies. An untreated infection
or illness caused by poor hygiene is
more likely to kill you
s h o u l d the SHTF
v e r s us s o m e
g u n t ot -
i n g l o ot e r.
Having lots of supplies to treat mul-
tiple types of wounds/injuries (in-
cluding antibiotics and pain killers)
can only be seen as the smart thing
to do. It would also be wise to keep
paper copies of the Physicians Desk
Reference (PDR) and the Merck Man-
ual of Diagnosis and Terapy on hand
should you not have access to the in-
ternet during an emergency situation.
Barter
If you have made progress in all of
the other categories on the pyramid
it might be time to start thinking
about barter items. Of course you
can trade anything on the list to oth-
ers who might fnd them valuable,
but your bartering stash should in-
clude a few other essentials. Alcohol
would make a nice item to trade for
example. Tink about what peo-
ple in your area might be willing to
trade for and stock up on some of it.
Gold & Silver
I am a huge fan of stockpiling pre-
cious metals, I believe it is fool-
hardy not to. What is worst
case scenario if you should
decide to procure gold and
silver SHFT never occurs
and you are lef with the a
stash of gold and silver? Tis
is not an issue, simply sell
of your gold and silver
to subsidize your retire-
ment. However, keep in
mind that should you
choose to invest in gold
and silver, make it the low-
est of your priorities as indicated
by its place at the top of the pyramid.
Te 3 Tenets
Skills
Having all of the items listed on the
Prepper Pyramid will only ensure
that you last a bit longer than those
around you should things get crazy.
Te Prepper Pryamid
See PYRAMID Page 10 05) 3000 calories
Page 10
North of HWY 90
See PYRAMID Page 10
You truly need skills to survive. Know-
ing how to grow your own food, how
to hunt, how to split wood, how to fx
a car, stitch a wound, lite a fre with
a fint or your own urine, how to fl-
ter and purify water, and the list goes
on and on. Te importance of hav-
ing skills cannot be stressed enough.
People
In keeping with skills, relationships
with people or community are always
an important consideration no matter
where you are in your Prepper jour-
ney. Ive said it before, you have to
sleep sometime and there is no such
thing as a one man army. Getting
to know your neighbors and fnding
likeminded individuals will greatly
increase your chances of survival in a
post SHTF scenario. More people with
more skills can only be a good thing.
Health
Ofen overlooked, this is such an
important category. Over 2/3 of the
USA is considered overweight. Tats
shameful at best. Being healthy is a
daily task which permeates through
all stages of preparedness. Its not
just about being physically strong
and being able to run 5 miles, its also
about not being dependent on med-
ication or machines (if possible). If
resources become thin once treatable
illnesses or conditions might become
fatal. Putting in the work to stay
healthy is another responsibility of a
Prepper and should not be ignored.
7 Health Benefts of
Hemp
[3fatchicks.com]
Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis
sativa plant. It is not the same as
marijuana, as it does not contain the
high levels
of tetrahy-
drocannab-
inol (THC),
which is the
active ingre-
dient that
produces a
high. Hemp
has many in-
dustrial uses,
but you can
also obtain
many health
benefts from
it by adding
the seeds to
your diet.
Hemp can
provide you
with a complete protein, and a bal-
anced ratio of omega-3 and ome-
ga-6 essential fatty acids. It also
contains many B vitamins, vita-
mins A, D and E, calcium, sodium,
iron and dietary fber. Hence, hemp
seeds can supply you with all your
dietary needs for optimum health.
1. A Healthy Heart
Te essential fatty acids
contained in hemp can reduce blood
cholesterol to prevent plaque build-
up in the arteries. Plaque buildup
can contribute to atherosclerosis,
which is the hardening of the arter-
ies and eventually can cause heart
attacks and stroke. Te fatty acids
help to reduce infammation that
can cause poor blood circulation and
high blood pressure. Terefore hemp
can reduce
the work-
load of the
heart, and as
a result helps
to prevent
heart disease
and stroke.
2. A Healthy
Mind
Y o u r
brain con-
tains lot of
the same es-
sential fatty
acids which
are found in
hemp. Tere-
fore, hemp
can help to
improve your memory, and prevent
diseases such as Alzheimers and
Parkinsons. Hemp seeds can also
help to improve your moods, alle-
viate symptoms of depression and
reduce anxiety and stress levels.
3. Healthy Skin
Hemp oil is ofen used for
cosmetic purposes in products such
as soaps, skin lotions and lip balms.
Tis is because the oil helps to pen-
etrate into the layers of the skin to
promote new cell growth for a sofer
and smoother skin. Hemp can also
help to clear up skin conditions such
as eczema, psoriasis and dry skin.

9 Foods That Last Forever
When stored properly, these ev-
eryday items will last for years
sometimes decades even afer
theyve been opened. And theyll
lose very little, if any, of their origi-
nal quality as time passes. So think
twice before tossing one of these
items. If youve been handling it
correctly, chances are its just fne.
1) HONEY
Pure honey is as durable as it is de-
licious; it keeps
safe indefnite-
ly. Honey may
change col-
or or crystal-
lize over time,
but that wont
make it unsafe.
Keep it fresh:
Store in a cool area and keep tight-
ly closed. Revive crystallized honey
by placing the opened jar in warm
water and stirring until dissolved.
2) RICE
White, wild, arborio, jasmine and
basmati rice all have an indefnite
shelf life, when kept free from con-
taminants. Te exception: brown
rice. Tanks to its higher oil con-
tent, it wont keep nearly as long.
Keep it fresh: Store in a cool, dry area.
Once opened, place rice in a sealed
airtight container or place original
package in a resealable heavy-duty
freezer bag. For added protection,
store rice in the refrigerator or freezer.
3) SUGAR
White, brown or powdered
sugar never spoils because it
doesnt support bacterial growth.
Te real challenge is to prevent
it from becoming rock-hard.
Keep it fresh: Keep sugar in a cool,
dry area. To prevent sugar from
hardening afer opening, place it
in an airtight container or cover
the original package in a heavy-du-
ty plastic bag and seal tightly.
4) HARD LIQUOR
Whipping up some penne alla vod-
ka and a pitcher of cocktails? Dis-
tilled spirits vodka, rum, whiskey,
gin, tequila and the like dont
spoil, even afer opening. Te taste
and aroma may fade gradually, but
itll take ages before you notice.
Keep it fresh: Store in cool, dark area,
away from direct heat or sunlight. Keep
bottle tightly closed when not in use.
5) MAPLE SYRUP
Pure maple syrup not
only makes your pan-
cakes special, it adds
tremendous favor to
a whole range of dish-
es. Best of all, it keeps
forever in the freezer.

Keep it fresh: Re-
frigerate afer opening. For long-
term storage, freeze maple syr-
up in airtight plastic containers.
6) PURE VANILLA EXTRACT
Yes, its more expensive than its
imitation counterpart. But pure
vanilla extract keeps forever, so
youll never have to waste a drop.

Keep it fresh: Store in cool,
dark cupboard and keep tight-
ly closed when not in use.
7) DISTILLED WHITE VINE-
GAR
A reliable standby in every-
thing from marinades to salad
dressings, distilled white vin-
egar will remain virtually un-
changed as the years pass by.
Keep it fresh: Store vinegar a cool,
dark area and keep
tightly capped
afer each use.
8) CORNSTARCH
A must-have for
thickening sauces,
gravies, and pud-
dings. Cornstarch
will keep indefnitely if its kept
dry and free from contaminants.

Keep it fresh: Store in cool,
dry area; keep package tight-
ly closed between uses.
9) SALT
From the basic ta-
ble variety to fan-
cier versions like
kosher and sea,
salt is a favor en-
hancer that never
spoils or goes stale.

Keep it fresh: Store
in cool, dry area.

Myth #1: We all wear cammo.
I dont own a single piece of cammo
clothing and probably never will. My
complexion looks really washed out
in those tones.
Myth #2: We all live in Idaho.
Not true! I live in a suburban
neighborhood in a large city. If all
preppers moved to Idaho, well, that
would make for a pretty awesome
state, actually. If you ever needed to
borrow a cup of sugar, you wouldnt
know which neighbor to ask frst. Of
course if you were a real prepper, you
wouldnt run out of sugar in the frst
place.
Myth #3: We have gun cabinets that
6 Common Myths about Preppers
look like the one pictured below.
In my husbands dreams!!! Many
preppers, but not all, take full ad-
vantage of their Second Amendment
Rights.
Myth #4: We stock up on mostly
MREs. (Meals Ready to Eat)
I think Y2K pretty much stripped
away the mystique of the MRE for
the average citizen. We preppers rely
on the grocery store for much of our
food storage and sometimes add de-
hydrated and freeze-dried food along
with bulk purchases of staples.
Myth #5: We love the wilderness.
While this is true for many of us,
others just cant even seem to get the
hang of basic camping-out. Tat
would be us, unfortunately. City
born and bred is something you dont
get over quickly just because you
know how to grind wheat!
Myth #6: We all go to the same
church.
I have no idea where the ofcial
Preppers Church is located, but I
know for sure that were not mem-
bers. Preppers are not as easily
defned as some would like to think.
Were not all the same race, income
level, political party or religion.
Were individuals who believe its
important to prepare for a future that
is uncertain. [thesurvivalmom.com]

4. Weight Loss
Hemp is a natural appetite
suppressant, and helps you to feel full
longer. Adding 4 tablespoons of hemp
seeds to your breakfast can help to re-
duce your food cravings for the rest of
the day. On top of that you will have
lots of energy for exercise and oth-
er activities to help you lose weight.
5. Digestive Disorders
Te high
amount of fber that is
contained in hemp seeds
can help to keep your di-
gestive tract clean and
healthy. As a result you
can eliminate digestive
disorders such as bloat-
ing and constipation.
6. Prevent Cancer
A healthy digestive sys-
tem along with the antioxidants
and plant sterols contained in hemp
can help to reduce your risk of
breast, colon and prostate cancers.

Solar Power Generator
While searching Amazon.
com for Solar power, when I came
across the Wagan EL2546 Solar e
Cube 1500. Tis thing looks like a
portable solar power generator and
is portable. Portable if I toss it in
the truck, but still portable!
Portable solar units are
small but dont output enough
juice to run appliances
(typically). Large solar
implementations
are designed to
be stationary.
Tis is
the best of both worlds. Its
about the size of a typical gaso-
line powered generator, has a built
in charge controller, batteries and
a 1500 Watt AC inverter, that can
surge up to 3600 watts peak. Tats
no small feat. Tere are gasoline
generators that dont output that
much power. You can even add ad-
ditional panels for faster and more
efcient charging.
Product Features
5 solar panels (16 Watts each) un-
fold and slide out from the power
cube
1500 Watts AC inverter (3600
peak surge power): 2 AC outlets
to power appliances such as radio,
portable stereo, laptop computer,
television, microwave, convention-
al refrigerator/freezer
2 USB power ports (5 Volts
2.1 ampere total) to
charge/operate
iPad/tablet,
Kindle/e-reader,
MP3 player, cell phone,
laptop, etc. plus 2 DC 12
Volt outlets
Includes AC and DC adapters

bly; this all in one ready to use
solar cube is ready to use out of the

July 24th in Utah we cele-
brate Pioneer Day. Pioneer Day is
a state holiday commemorating the
arrival of the frst band of Mormon
Pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley on
July 24th, 1847. So in honor of those
great pioneers of the past, here are
thirteen skills that were everyday
to them that you may want to learn.
Most are skills that will be useful even
now, while some may be more nec-
essary in a grid down type situation.
1. Gardening. Growing
your own vegetables and fruits,
knowing soil conditions, how to
get water to your plants, extend-
ing your harvest season, and com-
mon garden pests will be vital to
having a continuous food supply.
2. Saving seed. Te other
end of gardening is being able to plant
again next year. Saving seed can be
kind of intimidating and mysterious,
especially for plants like carrots that
dont go to seed in their frst growing
season. Start with non-hybrid seeds
and a reference book like Seed to
Seed and practice saving some kind
of seed from your next garden. Tis
is defnitely a learned skill, but could
be vital to a continued food supply.
3. Blacksmithing. Being
able to make something useful like
a horseshoe, tool, or cooking uten-
sil from scrap metal could come in
very handy. Tis is a skill people will
barter for. Blacksmith work does
require a good deal of practice and
some special equipment, but its a
skill worth learning and the learning
curve is cut a bit if you already know
how to weld or do other metal work.
4. Shooting your dinner.
Or shooting to protect yourself.
Learn to hit something with a bullet
and youll be better fed and it may
even keep you and your family alive.
5. Dressing that game. And
I dont mean sewing little clothes for
it. Once the squirrel or rabbit or bird
or deer is brought home, how do you
make it edible? Tis skill applies to
any livestock you are able to raise
as well. Youll need to know how to
clean and prepare the meat for eating.
6. Cooking over a fre.
You may have other methods to
cook your food available, like a so-
lar oven or barbecue grill, but an
open fre is the most primitive and
one of the most common means of
cooking in a grid down emergency.
7. Making a fre. Try
some methods without using
matches for an extra challenge.
8. Riding a horse. Tey
make this look easy in the movies,
but there is a learning curve involved.
A horse is transportation, a pack an-
imal, and a friend. Learning to ride

one can get you places when roads are
impassable or vehicles arent working.
9. Building a home. Or
another shelter, or a fence, or some-
thing else. Knowing how to use hand
tools and simple machines will go a
long way if youre having to rebuild.
10. Making fun with sticks
and rocks. Or any available raw ma-
terials. Lifes not all about work,
right? How many games can you
invent with materials you have on
hand? We all need some down time,
but this will be especially import-
ant if you have children around.
11. Knowing and preparing
wild edibles. Which plants in your
area are safe to eat and what parts of
them are edible? A little foraging can
add variety to your diet or even sus-
tain life if theres nothing else to eat.
12. Herbal remedies. If the
doctors not around, knowing which
herbs to use and how to use them to
treat common ailments like cough, fe-
ver, headache, etc. can be a great bless-
ing to your family or others around
that may need the help. An excellent
reference for herbs and their uses is
the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine.
13. Sewing. Patching, fx-
ing tears, altering hems and waist-
bands, or creating an entire new
piece of clothing or bedding could
help you stay warm and keep you
from running around half naked.

the sweat stains and rub in with a

Fight Away Colds and Viruses With
Hydrogen Peroxide Ear Drops
By placing 2 to 3 drops of
pure 3% hydrogen peroxide into each
ear, holistic proponents claim cold
and fu durations are signifcantly
lowered. Afer placing the drops in
one ear, allow the peroxide to bubble
for 5 to 10 minutes before tilting your
head and allowing the peroxide (and
ear wax) to drain out. Repeat on the
other ear.

H202 Remedy
Did you know standard
3% hydrogen peroxide is so efec-
tive at eliminating mold spores, that
even government health agencies
recommend this remedy? Leav-
ing mold untreated, can result in
serious respiratory illnesses and even
constant allergy attacks. Eliminate
mold from your home or ofce by
pouring undiluted 3% hydrogen
peroxide into a spray bottle. Spray
until the mold area is completely
saturated. Allow the solution to sit
for 10 minutes before scrubbing the
area with a sponge. Wear protective
breathing masks to prevent inhaling

1. Go to bed Warm
Jumping jacks, push ups or some-
thing similar just enough to warm
yourself up but before you start sweat-
ing. If you get in a sleeping bag when
you are cold youll likely stay cold.
2. Fuel up
If its going to be a very cold night
consider a pre-bedtime snack that
will keep the furnace burning. Slow
burning fatty snacks like cheese;
avoid refned sugars or cafeine.
3. Water
You need to be well hydrated to stay
warm. How much water you drink
within the hour or two before you
go to sleep is determined by how fast
you process it. If you need to get up
early drinking a lot of water before
bedding down will serve as a natu-
ral alarm clock it can be tricky to
time it right though. If nature calls
in the middle of the night get up and
go! Holding it in makes you colder.
4. Clothing
Change as much of your clothing
as possible. Te clothes you wore
all day will be a bit damp and cold.
If you wear them to bed youll have
to warm your cold damp clothes
up before you get warm yourself.
5. Hot water bottles
You may think about flling your
water bottles with hot water,
wrapping them with some spare
How to Sleep Warm When Camping
clothing and warming up your
sleeping bag before you get in it.
6. Wear a hat
We all loose a lot of heat from our
heads. Its not an old wives tale;
wear a hat to keep your feet warm.
7. Keep your nose and
mouth out of the sleeping bag
Scouts ofen think that if they crawl
all the way into their sleeping bags
theyll be warmer but the moisture
in your breath will make the bag
and your clothing damp. A well-de-
signed mummy style sleeping bag
will allow you to close the bag so only
your nose and mouth are exposed.
8. More Below than Above
Sleeping warm means insulat-
ing your self from the ground. A
good insulating pad is important.
9. Sleeping bag socks
If you get cold feet at night con-
sider keeping a dedicated pair of
socks in your sleeping bag. Tick,
non constricting feece or wool
socks worn only in the sleeping bag
may be the answer to warm feet.
10. Fluf up you Bag
Te insulation in your sleeping bag
gets compressed when you pack
it so it must be fufed up to be ef-
fective before you get inside. Do a
through job and youll sleep warmer.

mold spores. If in doubt, repeat the
cleaning process up to three times.
A Trone Worthy of a King Efec-
tively Clean and Whiten Your Toilet
Are you searching for a
non-toxic way to keep your toilet
looking and smelling brand new?
Simply pour 1 to 2 cups of 3% hy-
drogen peroxide into the toilet bowl
and allow it to soak for 30 minutes.
Using a toilet brush, scrub the bowl
interior and fush away the grime.
Te bleaching properties of
hydrogen peroxide are used in many
industries. Perhaps its most famil-
iar day-to-day use is in proprietary
products used in washing clothes,
for example in some forms of Van-
ishTM. Large quantities of hydrogen
peroxide are used to make sodium
perborate and sodium percarbonate,
which are used as bleaching agents in
liquid and solid detergents. Sodium
perborate, NaBO3.4H2O, is made
by adding hydrogen peroxide to a
solution of sodium metaborate and
sodium hydroxide. Sodium percar-
bonate is prepared by adding hydro-
gen peroxide to a solution of sodium
carbonate.
