Be Constantly Alert & Aware
! king gave up his kingdom, relin.uished his wife and children, and
became a recluse# 6ne day, when he was wandering in a forest, he
noticed something that looked like a shining ruby lying near a tree# 6n
seeing it, a thought arose in his mind, 7what an e-pensive jewel, let me
pick it up .uickly before someone else sees it# 8e hastily bent down to
pick it up, but as soon as his hand touched the object, he realised that
it wasn7t a jewel but a chewed piece of betel leaf that someone had
spat out, which seemed like a ruby because of the re9ected sunlight#
:he king was 2lled with great shame and remorse, condemning himself
for his greedy behaviour# What an impure mind! 8e bemoaned#
,ndeed, no one knows when a latent samsk;r; will awaken and
lead you astray# :hat is why mystic <abir would say= , am so frightened
of my own mind# 5or no one knows when a samsk;r;, a seed of v;san;
will sprout and lead to rising of the impurities of greed, lust, anger, and
lead me astray# 6 master! , am so scared of my own mind, for it can
change any moment#
Remember, all that you perceive through your senses in your
waking state, be it knowingly or unknowingly, all of those impressions
are left in the deeper layers of your mind in the form of samsk;r;s#
!nd it is these trillions of samsk;r;s that keep on giving rise to speci2c
thoughts and emotions in your mind# :hat is why a spiritual aspirant
needs to be constantly alert> aware at all times of every thought, every
emotion arising in his mind#
5or even a moment7s lapse of awareness will ripen the thought or
emotion, and conse.uentially you will end up performing such actions
which you later end up regretting# /ou don7t want to do something, yet
it just happens because of the force of the awakened samsk;r;# :here
are only two ways of eradicating these samsk;r;s= Vair;gya
?dispassion to the objective world@ is one way, and the other is sincere
practise of praty;h;ra ?withdrawal of the senses from the objective
world@ and dhy;na ?meditation@#
