Future of Higher Education
Online Education is the future of all higher education!
Introduction

With the advancement in technology and computer science, the world is being
globalized. We can access a flood of information within a few seconds, chat with our family
and friends far away at any moment with the help of technology. Obviously, the movement
of this technology has greatly affected the teaching and learning process, which I will
discuss below in more detail. Just two decades ago, we didn't have devices like iPods, iPads
and tablet PCs. These new devices have revolutionized our generation. Various useful
software programs, Open Source software, computer languages, animation softwares and
other new tools signal the arrival of new and amazing future, more advanced than the
present.

This is evident from the growing dependence on web and Internet in the process of
teaching and learning. Programs like distance learning and Internet classes will take over
the traditional classroom style. Video-conferencing will be used instead of synchronous
communication. Programs like distance learning, sometimes called e-learning. Because
distance learning is less expensive to support and is not constrained by geographic
considerations, it offers opportunities in situations where traditional education has
difficulty operating. Students with scheduling or distance problems can benefit, as can
employees, because distance education can be more flexible in terms of time and can be
delivered virtually anywhere.
Some of the most popular distance learning technologies includes:
Video technology, such as instructional videos using video conferencing, podcasts,
or YouTube.
Computer-centered technology delivered over the Internet

Need to add more to my introduction!
Definitions: E-learning, Web-based learning, Online learning, and Distance learning

E-learning is mostly associated with activities involving computers and interactive
networks simultaneously. The computer does not need to be the central element of the
activity or provide learning content. However, the computer and the network must hold a
significant involvement in the learning activity.
Web-based learning is associated with learning materials delivered in a Web browser,
including when the materials are packaged on CD-ROM or other media.
Online learning is associated with content readily accessible on a computer. The content
may be on the Web or the Internet, or simply installed on a CD-ROM or the computer hard
disk.
Distance learning involves interaction at a distance between instructor and learners, and
enables timely instructor reaction to learners. Simply posting or broadcasting learning
materials to learners is not distance learning. Instructors must be involved in receiving
feedback from learners.

Definition: Higher Education

The term higher education has no simple definition. The international definition of post
school education is divided into two parts. First is Higher Education and the second is
Further Education. A higher education qualification at degree level takes a minimum of
three years to complete, more typically four. It will have a theoretical foundation, it will be
at a level, which would qualify someone to work in a professional field, and it will usually
be taught in an environment, which also includes advanced research activity. Higher

education generally means university level education. It offers a number of qualifications
ranging from Higher National Diplomas and Foundation Degrees to Honors Degrees and as
further step, Postgraduate programs such as Masters Degrees and Doctorates. These are
recognized throughout the world as representing specialist expertise supported by a wide
range of skills. Further education generally includes those post graduate studies in where
you can gain your Master and Doctorate degrees. These degrees mark the highest one
can earn, though they are divided into two levels. A master's degree, for instance, is
awarded for a particular course of study beyond the baccalaureate degree. They can come
in various categories, such as a Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Master of Theology.
The amount of time it takes to earn a master's degree depends upon the program one is
enrolled in, but one should usually expect to study at least for 2 years. The second type of
graduate degree, and one considered higher than a master's degree, is a doctoral degree.
These are awarded for a particular course of study beyond the master's degree. Doctoral
degrees can be professional degrees, such as the Doctor of Ministry, or academic degrees,
such as the Doctor of Philosophy. The amount of time to earn such a degree varies greatly
by the field of student and the institution.

Online Learning vs. Traditional classroom
Due to advancement of technology educational systems have developed and created
various educational methods. Now days education can be acquired through several
ways such as attending a university, online learning, self-study, or hiring an
independent tutor. But the traditional education and online education seems to be more
prominent and beneficial. Although both of them have similarities such as study
program and evaluation, differences in cost, location, and communication of traditional
school make it more beneficial to acquire education.
Both, online and traditional education uses the same level of study programs. In
both studies teachers encourage students to acquire higher knowledge. For example,
the traditional classroom teacher urges students to participate actively or do
assignments and projects, just as online education students are obliged to. Professors,
assist students with their assignments and discuss with them about other issues in both
educations whether it is online or regular. Teachers in traditional education as well as
online education implement same teaching styles. That is to say, both systems require
teachers to set assignments for students and anticipate from them completion of tasks.
To add, traditional education students undergo exams face-to-face styles same as in

Future of Higher Education 4

online education scholars carry face-to-face exams. Also, reference materials are given
in both schools and students follow these materials. Lastly, professors participation is
important in both studies and require from them appropriate level of knowledge. Thus
both educational systems use the same method of teaching.

Not only teaching is same between online and regular education but students
evaluation is also the same. Students in both educational situations are required to
perform their best and attend classes in order to obtain higher grades. They must get
ready for the next class and review what was given for the homework. Whether it is
online or traditional school students are graded according to their performances. To
add, online education and traditional education use the same method of evaluation such
as A, B, C, D and F. Furthermore, students in both educations are given feedback by a
professor to improve knowledge and get higher results from studies. Online teachers
offer students with feedbacks that students can review and correct their mistakes. The
same method is used in traditional education where a professor gives feedback for
every class and then the student reviews those mistakes and make corrections.

One of the differences between traditional and online education is the cost. There is
a big gap between the price of traditional and online schooling. Online education is
much more expensive compared to traditional school and not all families can afford
online education for their children. In addition to this, weekly print outs are provided
for free in regular school while in online school students are required to purchase e-
books through internet for some courses. For example, 120-credit Bachelors degree in
traditional school cost around $15,000 whereas online school proposes same level of
degree for $45,000-$50,000 (Sweet, 2010). The cost of traditional school is much lower
compared to online school. Online education also requires latest laptops or every
student ought to renew his laptop because online applications may be updated and
students laptop may not work well. While in traditional school student is not required
to bring laptop, therefore the cost of traditional school makes it more profitable. (This
was from one source, many other sources disagree. I need to look into this a bit more.)

With all of the opportunities available for College students, online education is not
necessary for everyone. Some students may thrive best with interaction and learning, or
they need a particular structure and schedule to manage well. The regular school
student can get some advice from peer students who study within a traditional school
setting. Even though this can be done within an online course, some students may not
utilize this as much as if they were in a traditional classroom. When you are in your
own private home or where ever you choose to study, you may just sit back and simply
do what is requested and not interact as much. As we live within society we should
know how to interact in society and traditional education is appropriate method to
learn fundamentals of socialization. Having teamwork in class means meet new people,
and learn new cultures and backgrounds.
Lastly, experience plays a major role in traditional education. In online education
students may not have ability to gain experience; it could be difficult to implement what
is learned into society. While in class students have opportunity to obtain new
experiences and use them for future. Students in school can use what they learned in
classes such as voluntary work or activeness. Attending school, students know that they
will encounter new experiences and that they can learn something from that
experience. Students also can learn various manners by observing people in class and
gain experience of what is good and bad.
Both education systems are beneficial on their own as well as dependent upon the
students learning style, will depend upon how they will learn and absorb the given
information within a course.
