1 use this at the beginning of each lesson, to get the kids aake, out of their seats and to
introduce some important classroom English. 1f things get out of hand later on, the
preparation you do here ill be ,ery useful in getting things back under control!
2t the beginning you simply shout out commands at the kids. 3irst of all simple things like
4stand up4 or 4sit don4 are 56, along ith 4good morning4. 2lso, try tricking them by saying
4stand up4 hen they are already standing.
2s you meet the kids more you can add ords such as "ump, spin 7a big fa,ourite8, eat,
drink, cheer, clap,
9ater boy, girl can be added 7much laughter hen boys
stand up hen you say 4girls stand up48. 2lso big, small
e.g. big "ump, small "ump and :uiet, loud e.g. :uiet clap,
loud cheer.
E,en 1st years can get :uite ad,anced ith things such
as 4girls,+ big spin "umps4
5r try using 4play4 e.g. 4;lay the piano, play tennis4 or things like 4(atch T<4
3or 4clap4 or 4cheer4 get them to ,ary the ,olume as you raise or loer your arm * it=s a great
4,olume control4 for the moments hen you do ant them to be :uiet! 1f you ant some
more ords, try 4cry4 or e,en 4>ip it!4
5nce you get past these basics, try some other topics from the songs 7 e.g. emotions from
the ?Ho are you@A song8, and then start asking :uestions that the kids can anser. Bou

1d recommend this for e,ery lesson to make sure the kids remember and can use the
English you,e taught!
1. Fplit the class into to groups. 5ne lines up on the left side, one on the right
G. Bou ask the front kid in each group a :uestion.
E. The first one to anser correctly gets to sit don. The other goes to the back of his&her
team.
H. The inning team is the first here e,eryone is sat don!
Iake sure the :uestions come thick and fast. E!amples include 4(hat=s your name@4 4Ho
old are you4 4(hat=s this@4 4(hat colour is this@4 etc. etc. Bou can use anything from the
curriculum page on the Genki English site% http%&&genkienglish.net&curriculum.htm
The magic of this game is that it gets the kids used to hearing :uestions and responding
straight aay, ithout all the customary 4errr, ehhh4 type pauses. 1t also lets the kids
distinguish beteen 4Ho are you@4 and 4Ho old are you@4 and is a great ay to pick up
hich themes need re,ieing and hich ones are 56.
This game is also great in Dunior High, here all the kids ant to sit don. Fometimes in
Elementary Fchool they ant to lose "ust so that they=ll get to go again!

This is a really cool game for :uickly practicing ,ocab or con,ersation.
1. Teach 4/o you like..@4 and four bits of ,ocab 7e.g. apples, bananas etc. or eating, singing,
etc.8
G. Tell the kids to stand up
E. Get out a stop atch and as you say 4Go!4 start the atch.
H. The kids pair up. They say the folloing con,ersation
2% 4Hello4
#% 4Hello4
2% 4/o you like apples@4
#% 4Bes, 1 do! /o you like bananas@4
2% 4-o 1 don=t!4
#% 4Thank you4
2% 4Goodbye4
+. They change partners and repeat the con,ersation. #)T this time they ask about a
different food.
J. They find another partner. 2nd again ask ith a different food.
0. $epeat again, and again until they ha,e used all H :uestions.
L. They sit don
M. (hen the last child sits don, the teacher stops the stopatch!
Bou can also use it for con,ersation, such as 4Ho are you@4 or 4(here=s the...@4. Teach
them four replies to the :uestion e.g. 1=m hungry, 1=m 56, 1=m happy, 1=m tired. (hen they
play the game, the first time they reply 41=m 564, the second time 41=m happy4 etc. etc.
This is a great ay to get the kids ready to sing the 4Ho are you@4 Fong!

-o 4mingle4 probably isn=t ,ery high on your 4ords to teach4 list, and :uite rightly so. #ut
the real magic of this game comes hen making groups.
1. Get rid of any tables and chairs and get the kids together in one big group.
G. (hilst singing a 4mingle chant4 the kids mo,e around, mingling ith each other.
E. The kids ask you a :uestion that you can anser ith a number e.g. 4Ho old are you@4
or 4(hat time is it@4,
H. Bou anser and the kids get into groups of that number e.g. you say 41=m H years old4 and
the kids get into groups of four.
+. $epeat from G.
5nce you=,e done it ith 4mingle4 you can change the ,erb any time you ant to play e.g.
4sim4 here the kids sim around hilst mingling, or 4dance4 or 4hop4 or anything really.

1. The kids all line up at one end side of the gym.
G. This side of the gym is the 4safe4 side. #ut the kids really
ant to get across to the other side, here there is a seet
shop. Today all the seets are free!
E. #ut, beteen the kids and the seet shop is a monster! 2t first the teacher is the
monster. 2sk the kids to guess hat your fa,ourite food is. They=ll shout out some foods
7nice practice!8, then you say that your fa,ourite food is human!
H. Tell them that they can only cross to the seet shop if the monster is in a good mood and
isn=t hungry. 2sk them ho they can check on the mood of the monster. 2fter a moment a
fe kids ill say 42sk him&her 4Ho are you@44
+. 2ll together the kids ask the monster 4Ho are you@4
J. /o a fe 41=m sorry@4s to get the kids to shout in big loud ,oices 7so that all the kids "oin

Here=s a ,ery fun game for younger kids to teach ith ./ ,ol. J=s 4)nder the Fea4 theme.
1. The kids mime simming around in a circle in the middle of the class.
G. 1f you ha,e lots of kids 7say E0 in a class8 then ha,e to or three concentric circles, one
inside the other. Each circle sims in opposite directions.
E. The kids shout out 4-emo, -emo, hat can you see@4
H. The teacher, ho is -emo, looks outside the indo and shouts out 41 can see a ....4 plus
one of the sea animals from the song.
+. (hilst still simming the kids repeat the anser and do the mime.
J. .ontinue from E.
0. #ut... if the teacher says 41 can see a shark!4 to kids, ho ere hidden outside, rush into
the classroom from different directions.
L. The other kids all rush to touch the all of the class, here they are safe.
M. 1f any of them are tagged by the sharks on their ay to the all, they are eaten and
become sharks for the ne!t round.

This is a great ,ariation of the (hat time is it, Ir (olf@ game, and thank
you to the teachers in -ara for the inspiration. Dust using the name
4-emo4 makes it really e!citing for the kids.
3or the first to sharks, it=s good to get the 4kids ho=,e had too much
sugar for breakfast and are disturbing the class4 to help out as it keeps them under control.
The main point of the game is to get the kids o,er the 4"ust ords4 and into the 4able to gi,e
ansers to :uestions4 style of lesson.

Preparation
1. Fplit the class into G,E or H four groups.
G. 2t the back of the class spread out se,eral picture cards of nouns.
E. 2t the front ha,e se,eral folded up pieces of paper. 1nside each piece of paper is a colour.
The Game
H. 5ne person from each group stands up. (hen the teacher says 4Go!4, these E kids race
to the back of the class, They then pick up a card that they kno the English for. Then they
race to the front and pick up one of the folded pieces of paper.
+. They then ha,e to speak out loud 41 like4 folloed by the colour they ha,e chosen and
then the name of the ob"ect. 3or e!ample 41 like pink fish!4
J. The :uickest person to say it gets G0 points! 1f the others can say theirs, they get 10
points.
0. Get the ne!t person in each team to stand up and continue from H
This is a really good game that the kids get into. (hen 1 first tried it ith my first years 1 as
at the back of the class, sorting out the cards hen the first kid spoke. 1 as sure someone
had the T< on as this little J year old came out ith this sentence that sounded perfect.
3or older kids 7from years E up8 ha,e the colours at the front right, and a set of ad"ecti,e
cards 71 ha,e ones for cute, hea,y, big, e!pensi,e etc.8. This time the kids ha,e to say 41 like
4 K ad"ecti,e K colour K noun. 5r try 42t .. 7 time8, 1 like 7 ,erb8, 7ad"ecti,e8, 7colour8, 7noun8 K
7noun84 e.g. 42t M o=clock 1 like eating scary blue T<s and cos4 * great fun! Bou can then
make other sentences such as 41=m going to...4 K countries K modes of transport!
Fometimes they get it rong and say the colour at the end, but once you correct them, they
ne,er get it rong tice!!

This is a cool game for smaller classes. Bou need to prepare G or E small cuddly toys.
6oalas are the best!
1. Fit the kids in a circle.
G. Teach them 4please4 i.e. 46oala please4
E. ;ass the koala to a kid ho says 46oala please4.
H. The kids then pass the koalas amongst themsel,es. 3irst of all a kid says 4please4 and
then recei,es the koala from the pre,ious player.
+. -o the teacher introduces 4thank you4.
J. $epeat as before, but this time after recei,ing the koala, the child says 4thank you4
0. -o the teacher introduces 4you=re elcome!4 and repeat again.

middle of the board ith a 4hole4 ne!t to it.
G. 5n one side of the board dra to tees ith to golf
balls on them and number them 414 and 4G4 for each
team.
E. (rite the number range you ill be using on the top of the board 7Ftart ith 1*G0 for
younger grades and 1*100 for the more ad,anced8.
H. ;ick a number in your head 7rite it don if it=s a big number so you don=t forget!8 and let
the kids decide the team to go first ith rock, paper scissors. 9et=s pretend e chose 1L as
the anser.
+. They guess a number 7hopefully they ill all agree on the number8 and you dra a line
from their golf ball to the hole. 1f they are spot on then the line goes right into the hole. 1f not,
stop the line either too short or too far from the hole.
J. /ra the ball and rite their team number inside and
underneath rite the number they guessed. e.g. here team
1 guessed 1J, hich is less than 1L so it didn=t :uite make
it. Bou can make the line go iggly or high up into the 4air4
for suspense.
0. 9et the ne!t team guess. The closer they get to the hole
the better they ill be able to narro it don to the number.
L. 5nce a team guesses the number, they get a point and get to go first on the ne!t round..
