LESSON TOPIC: Lesson 2: The British and their sports
TYPE OF LESSON: consolidation and acquiring new information (ability and sports)
SKILLS INVOLVED: listening, speaking, reading, writing.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES:
A) SPECIFIC AIMS: by the end of the lesson the Ss. will be able to:
- ask and answer questions about their favourite sport or sports in general;
- express their opinion about the British sports and sports in general;
- name some of the British sports;
- use simple sentences to describe their preferences in terms of sports in real situations of communication;
- use can and can`t to express their ability related to sports

B) AFFECTIVE AIMS:
- to create a warm atmosphere in order to offer the background for smooth, easy acquisition of
English.
- to help Ss. become more confident when speaking English.
- to set a friendly English Language learning atmosphere for a better acquisition.

Dictionary to play the accurate pronunciation and explanation of the unknown words.

STAGES OF THE LESSON:


ACTIVITY 1: ORGANISATIONAL MOMENT (1`)
PROCEDURE:
T. enters the room, greets the Ss., asks if there are any absentees and talks to the Ss. asking them how they
are doing. Ss. greet and answer the questions.
AIM: - to cheer up the Ss. and to prepare Ss. for the lesson.

ACTIVITY 2: WARM UP: CHANGE PLACES GAME (2`)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks Ss. to play the game Change Places!T. asks Ss. Change places if you are wearing red!
And the Ss. wearing red have to sit in a different place. Change places if you are tall! ... Change places if
you are blond! etc. T. thanks Ss. for their activity and asks them to return to their places.
AIM: - to cheer up the Ss. and to prepare Ss. for the lesson.

ACTIVITY 3: CHECKING PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE (6`)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks the Ss. about their homework, first a frontal check -Has everybody done the homework? Tell me,
what was your homework for today?, then individually by verifying Ss` notebooks and offering Ss.
feedback and making corrections where necessary.
AIM: - to check the acquiring of previous knowledge and to give the Ss. feedback regarding their work at
home.

ACTIVITY 4: LEAD IN (2`)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks a T. asks Ss.Do you like sports? Ss. answer the question and then T. prepares the introduction of
the new topic by telling the Ss. Well, this is what we are going to do today: we are going to talk about
sports!
T. puts the title down on the bb. and the Ss. in their notebooks.
AIM: - to assure a smooth transition between the moments of the lesson;
- to make the lead-into the subject and capture their interest in the topic;
- to prepare Ss. for the lesson;

ACTIVITY 5: TOPIC FOCUS: INTRODUCING THE NEW INFORMATION (14`)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks Ss. to form 2 teams (TeamA andTeam 1) and carefully listen and watch a short video and try to
tell which is the most popular sport in Britain.Ss. listen and watch carefully and tell which is the most
popular British sport. T. then asks both teams to write down in their notebooks a list with the sports they
remember from the video. T. checks the number of sports each team remembered and then plays back the
video and asks the Ss. to put the British sports mentioned in the video on the bb. and the other Ss. to check
their list and see how many they scored and which is the winning team.
AIM: - to activate curiosity and Ss.` interest in the lesson topic.
- to facilitate the acquisition of the new information.

ACTIVITY 6: PRACTICE (5`)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks a S. what is his/her favourite sport and then T. asks the S. to choose another S. and ask him/her
different questions about his/her likes and ability regarding the sports on the bb. (Do you like swimming?
Yes, I do/No, I don`t! ; Can you play cricket? Yes I can/No, I can`t!)
AIM : - to enrich Ss. vocabulary on the topic;
- to put the Ss. in real situations of communication by expressing their likes;
- to activate Ss. vocabulary linked to sports and games;
- to assure the transition between the stages of the lesson.

ACTIVITY 7: PRODUCTION (14)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks Ss. in both teams, A and 1, to choose from the list one sport only as their favourite and express
their opinion about it in minimum 5 lines. Ss. are given 10` to complete the task and then they have to read
their production (5`). T supervises the whole activity and guides the Ss. where and if necessary. Ss. are
told that the best production will bring the winning team an extra point they can use for their next mark.
Ss. read their productions and T. offers Ss. feedback and the winning team is set.
AIM:
- to make Ss. use the acquired vocabulary in written production.
- to assure the transition between the stages of the lesson.

ACTIVITY 8: MIME GAME (2`)
PROCEDURE:
T. asks a S. To come in front of the class and mime a game from the list and the others have to guess the
game. Ss. proceed.
AIM : - to activate Ss. vocabulary linked to sports and games in a fun active manner;
- to assure the transition between the stages of the lesson.

ACTIVITY 9: ASSIGNING HOMEWORK (2`)
PROCEDURE:
T. sets exercise number 2d). from page 98 as homework and explains the task to the Ss. T. asks Ss. if they
have any problems in understanding the tasks and helps Ss. understand solve them. T. then sets extra
homework for the volunteers: Ss. will have to make a description of their favourite sport and motivate their
choice. T. writes the homework on the bb. and the Ss. in their notebooks.

ACTIVITY 10: EVALUATION/ASSESEMENT (2`)
PROCEDURE:
T. Ss. will be evaluated based on their activity during class verbally, but also by receiving marks.
