Content:
Paul's prayer of thanksgiving:
caused by faith in Jesus and love for all the saints (v15)
o rooted/stems from our faith in Jesus
o expressed through our love towards other Christians
give a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him (v17, cf 3:17-19)
o wisdom is given by God so that we know spiritual truths and apply it into our life
o revelation is made known by God so that we will know more
o the goal/purpose of wisdom and revelation is for the further knowledge of God
eyes of your heart may be enlightened (v18a)
o in order to see, light (wisdom) must enters the eyes and the eyes must be opened
(revelation)
o so that you will know what is the hope of His calling (v18b)
[speaking to Gentiles] remember that you were at that time separated from
Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the
covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world (2:12)
[speaking to Gentiles] just as also you were called in one hope of your
calling (4:4b)
who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in
Christ (1:3b; cf 1:3b-14)
1. just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world
(v4a)
o that we would be holy and blameless before Him (v4b)
2. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus
Christ to Himself (v5a)
o according to the kind intention of His will (v5b)
o to the praise of the glory of His grace (v6a)
which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved
(v6b)
in Him,
o 3. we have redemption through His blood (v7a), 4.
forgiveness of our trespasses (v7b)
according to the riches of His grace (v7c)
which He lavished on us (v8a)
5. in all wisdom and insight He made known to us the mystery of
His will (v8b-9a)
o according to his kind intention (v9b)
which He purposed in Him (v9b)
with a view to an administration suitable to
the fullness of the times (v10a)
o that is, the summing up of all things
in Christ (v10b)
things in heavens and things
on the earth. (v10c)
6. we have obtained an inheritance (v11a)
o having been predestined according to His purpose who
works all things after the counsel of His will (v11b)
o to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ
would be to the praise of His glory (v12)
7. sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise (v13b)
o who is given as a pledge of our inheritance (v14a)
o with a view to the redemption of God's own possession
(v14b)
o to the praise of His glory (v14c)
ultimate purpose of all these spiritual blessings is to the praise of
His glory (v6a, 12, 14c)
o what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints (v18c)
we are God's own possession (1 Pe 2:9; Ex 19:5, Dt 4:20, 7:6, 14:2, Titus
2:14)
our spiritual blessing not only include v3-14 such as salvation and God's
son, but we also are blessed with God Himself (1:14)
seeing the riches of the glory of being God's inheritance is describing it
with a quantity to it as opposed to only seeing "riches of being God's
inheritance" which only has a qualitative aspect to it
for example, not only seeing God's love as deep but seeing depth
of God's love (cf. 3:18)
we belong to God as His sons (v4a, 5a)
o what is the surpassing greatness of His power towards us who believe (v19a)
in accordance of the working of the same strength of His might which
(v19b):
raised Christ from the dead (v20a)
seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places (v20b)
o far above all rule and authority and power and dominion,
and every name that is named, in this age and the age to
come (v21)
o all things in subjection under His feet (v22a)
o head over all things to the church (v22b)
which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all
in all (v23)

Application:
hope of His calling
Ultimate purpose is to praise Him (v6a, 12, 14c; 3:13)
riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints
Live a life that is holy and blameless (v4b, Lev 26:12-13, 45)
surpassing greatness of His power
Equips the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body (4:12)
Defeat the powers of sin and death (6:12, 3:10)
seek greater knowledge which is the know the love of Christ (3:14-21)
