Concrete Mix Design

Step 1: Determination of the Water Cement Ratio (w/c ratio)

Water Cement Ratio (w/c) = 0.55
Step 2: Determination of the Water content (wc)
The water content required was based on the quality of the sand and the stone size
that was used
Fine Aggregate Quality
: Average
Coarse Aggregate -19mm
= 210 /m
Adjustment for 13,2mm stone add 10 /m
Therefore, Water content (wc) = 220 /m

Step 3: Determination of Cement content (cc)

Effective relative particle density:

Where:
cc = cement content
wc = water content
w / c = water cement ratio
Therefore:

Cement content = 400 kg / m
cc =

Step 4: Determination of the Stone Content

Ma = CBD ( K 0.1FM

Where:
Ma = mass of the stone in cubic meter of concrete (kg)
CBD = dry compacted bulk density of stone (kg/ m) determined in accordance
with SABS Method 845
K = a factor which depends on the maximum size of stone and the workability of
the concrete.
FM = fineness modulus of sand determined in accordance with SABS Method 829
Therefore:

Ma = 1650 ( 0,84 0.1 2,83 )

Stone content = 919,05 kg / m

Step 5: Sand content
The sand content was calculated assuming full compaction of the concrete, due to
the fact that the volume of concrete is equal to the sum of absolute volume of
cement, sand, stone and water.

Where:
Ms = mass of the sand in cubic meter of concrete (kg) (ignoring air content)
Ds = density of the sand (kg/ m)
Mc = mass of the cement in cubic meter of concrete (kg)
Dc = density of the cement (kg/ m)
Ma = mass of the stone in cubic meter of concrete (kg)
Da = density of the stone (kg/ m)
Mw = mass of the water in cubic meter of concrete (kg)

Therefore:

Ms = 2.65 1000 1
