Menchville House, a shelter in Newport News, Va., was established to help homeless
women and their children up to the age of 18 to overcome the barriers that poverty creates
(Menchville House). Poverty contributes to factors such as violence, abuse, and or neglect which
effect individuals overall (Newland, 2014, p. 1336). Menchville House is dedicated to stopping
the issue, before it starts and wants to reach a younger audience through social media (S. Jones,
person communication, September 17, 2014). At Menchville the goal is to evolve out of the
statistic (Menchville House). A social media campaign can help Menchville House reach the
audiences of women and children between the ages of 18-45 through social media to display that
there is some place to go for guidance, reassurance, and shelter before one will have to result in a
stay. Poverty is defined as the lack of income or poor living standards that one endures (Lister,
2004, p. 14). According to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau, 12.5 percent of all people lived
in poverty in the United States in 2007 (Lusted, 2010, p. 8).
While poverty impacts a large number of adults, many young adults are affected
(Jennifer, & Nelson, 2014, p. 35). Although Menchville House is locally known for their efforts
in helping families in need, the agency wants younger adults to be aware of their services in case
an emergency does happen (S. Jones, personal communication, September 17, 2014). With that
in mind, revamping the social media outlets connected to this agency is imperative. By changing
the image of the website and using social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and
Instagram the agency will then appeal more to a younger audience.
With the help of Menchville House, building a social media campaign to reach the target
audience will help further the awareness of the agency all while preventing the issue of
poverty. By successfully planning out the right execution through the social media campaign
created, Menchville House will be a prominent factor in this industry appealing to all ages.
