Operations on Numbers

Hey guys!Today were gonna talk about,Operations! And no,we are
not going to operate surgery tools on numbers, however, speaking
of spurgery tools, lets visit the Doctors office. So,the doctor
uses many things to look in our inside.MRI,for example looks
into our brain.Another tool is X-Ray,so doctors can look into
our bodies.Well, then you can do operations on
Numbers,too!Except,...theyre not surgery tools,...they are:
Addition,Subtraction,Multiplication,and Division!
Using these tools,we can operate on numbers!Take a look at this:
3 4
Lets operate on these 2 numbers using Addition! The addition
sign would go in the middle, and this is how it would look:
3+4
OK,So we use these operations on our numbers to do different
things.

Rooting for Roots
Second UnPublished Article-8:05 7/21/14
Hey Leafers!Today, well be rooting for roots,no soil
needed,...or plants for that matter. So everything has a
opposite,a cat has a dog as its oppsite(well,not really,...but

you get the point). So,exponents have roots as their
opposite.Addition has subtraction as its inverse, which is the
math word for opposite! For multiplication,well,...theres always
division! So lets take a review at exponents:
Exponents-Repeated Multiplication

to our section on Exponents.OK,So can there really be a reverse
of Exponents?Of course! There could even be a reverse of
you,...even though Im not sure what that would be

Fractions-LCD
So,hey Leafers!Whats the last dream you had?A cat
standing, shaking its hips like Shakira?Or maybe the Pet Rock
you had died of starvation-of course,Im not sure how that would
be possible,but-that was just to start you off.You really think
I care about what you dream? Not in my right mind!(Although Im

usually in my wrong mind). What I dream matters-fractions...they
give me the boogies at night!(not that I dont have Fraction
Repel Spray). But one day,we must all conquer our fears(even my
cat whose fear I am not currently sure of).And today,I shall
destroy my fear of fractions. Now,before we go into the mess(or
neatness),let me introduce you to the LCD.And if your a tech
geek(which you probably are not),then dont start thinking about
the lights above your head right now, because LCD is a math term
where it stands for Least Common Denominator. What in the sake of
the sake for sanity does that mean? That means you find the least
multiple both numbers have.A multiple is a product of 2
numbers.For example,2*2=4,so 4 is a multiple of 2.Now,it says
Least Common Denominator. That means if we have 2 fractions, like
2/2 and 5/6,you have to find the least multiple both numbers
have.So,lets make a table.

2 6
2*0=0 6*0=0
2*1=2 6*1=6
2*2=4 6*2=12
2*3=6 6*3=18
Yes,we could have chosen 0,but in math,we cannot divide by
zero. So,the LCD is now 6.Now,heres what we do:
2/2 => 2/2*3 => 2*3/2*3 => 6/6
We did 2*3 because that would make it 6,our LCD
We need to multiply the numerator and denominator by the same
number.

Fractions-Addition
Hello,Leafers! Now that you already know about LCD,adding
fractions will be a piece of cake(or a piece of a potato).For
example, lets say we have 6/2+.Lets put them into Common
Denominator, but you dont have to find the least of the common
denominators. You can just multiply the denominators of the
fractions to get a common denominator(a handy
trick).2*4=8.Heres how we do it to the numerator as well!
6/2=6*4/2*4=24/8

=3*2/4*2=6/8
Dun-duh-duh-dun! Were done!
Fractions-Subtraction
Its additions annoying sister, subtraction(OK,I agree-that was
lame.LOL)!Now here,we just do the same thing as addition,we just
subtract.Lets begin!OK,So lets say we have 2/ and 3/9.

Definition:The least common Denominator(LCD) of 2 or more
fractions is the least common multiple(LCM)of their
denominators.To find the LCD.
How To:
1. Factor both denominators and write the product of prime
factors. One way to do this is Prime Factorization using the
Factor Tree.
2. Take the greatest power of each prime factor.
3. Find the product.

Example: Find the LCD of
l
4
and
7
30
.
4 2 2 2
2
30 2 3 5
The greatest power of 2 is 2
2
,the greatest power of 3 is 3,and
the greatest power of 5 is 5.
So,we can indeed conclude that- 2
2
3 5 60.
Therefore,60 is the LCD.
This is only used in Addition and Subtraction:

Alright,guys-lets use this ol crank o metah and figure out
the first example!
OK So here, there are a few ways we can do this:
the number line is one way.

So what can we see?We start from 3 and we move backwards(because
of the minus sign)4 times. This problem tells us:

Math Way:3-4
Not-So-Math-Way:Start off at 3 and move backwards 4 times
And so,we end up at -1.3-4=-1

Alright,guys-lets use this ol crank o metah and figure out
the first example!
This one is a bit tricky.OK,So what do we know?We know
we have a -10 that were going to subtract from -3.We know well
subtract from the subtraction sign in the
middle...right?Close,but thats a trap!As you might
know,parentheses means multiplication.Were multiplying the
negative sign with -10.Now listen carefully-this is a rule:

A Negative Number multiplied by another negative number is a
positive number.Like this:
That would not be -12.That would be 12(positive twelve)
Same with this: (-3)(-4)=12
or this: (-3)-4=12
or even this:-3(-4)=12
Why?Because all of these say multiply -3 with -4(negative three
times negative four)
