One bowl, one jar, sand, plastic wrap, rubberband, small rock, lamp or sunlight.
Focus Question Where did it come from?
Instructions Pour enough water into a flat-bottomed bowl to cover the bottom. Fill a small jar with
sand and place it in the bowl. Loosely cover the top of the bowl with plastic wrap.
Secure with a rubber band. Place a small rock on top of the plastic, directly over the
jar. Place the bowl in direct sunlight or under a lamp. After one hour observe the bowl
and plastic wrap. What do you see?

Focus Question Where did the water on the outside of the glass come from?
Instructions Fill a glass with ice and water, being very careful not to spill any water. Set the glass
aside for 5 minutes. Observe the outside of the glass and the surface that it is sitting
on. What do you see? Where did it come from?

One penny, One piece of paper, Scratch paper, One plastic dropper, A small container
with water in it.
Focus Question How many drops does it take before the water rolls off the penny?
Instructions Place the penny on the paper. Use the dropper to place one drop of water on top of
the penny. Write down how many drops that you think it will take before water spills
on the paper. Ask your classmate to count your drops and compare them to your
guess.

Students will work cooperatively to locate facts. Students will improve concentration
skills.
