Memory Structure
The entire software (SW), firmware (FW) and all data of the network elements is
stored in non-volatile memories of the NE. The units of the FMX2 system can be
subdivided into two types, units with loadable software and those without.
Each of the units has its own processor, consisting of a microcontroller and various
memory chips (FEPROM, EEPROM, RAM) to allow it to administer software and
data. The microcontroller controls the internal functional sequences on the individual
units. The memory chips are used for saving SW and data.
The FW is stored in FEPROMs, EEPROMs or PROMs and can only be changed by
replacing these chips.
Units with loadable SW are equipped with volatile memory (RAM) and non-volatile
memory (FEPROM, EEPROM). The SW and data for these units can be loaded from
the LCT or centrally from the NCT (SW download). The RAM contains the current
SW loaded from the FEPROM by the initial program loader. Line cards (LCs) contain
their own initial program loader which is also stored in the RAM of these units, or unit
CUD.
The FEPROM contains that part of the RAM data which must be retained to ensure
that the RAM can be automatically reloaded (e.g. with data inconsistencies or power
failures). This data is determined when the unit itself starts up (e.g. NE address et,
HW configuration of the NE) or loaded via the F/QD2 interface as configuration data.
The RAM also contains data, known as transient data, which is not stored in the
FEPROM.
Also stored in the non-volatile memories is the type label data, giving the
manufacturer information for each unit (e.g. unit designation, product number, unit
status, software version). This information can be called up from the craft terminal.

The APS structure for FMX2 consists of the components for the operation system
and the system APS.

System APS (S-APS) is the designation for a complete set of loaded files of the
systems with a particular version (e.g. FMX2R3.1). The network elements of the
FMX2 can be loaded with the required software using LCT or NCT and SW
download. For each of these NE's, there is one or more partial APS (P-APS). This
requires uniform designations and codes which must be assigned to the individual
software components and software packages.
This designation appears during the entire lifetime of the software:
as a designation during software creation,
as a file name at each file transfer,
as a file name on the floppy disk/CDROM,
as a file name on the hard disk of the LCT or NCT and
as a hard coded designation in the module software which can be displayed by
LCT and ACI or NCT.

An LCT or NCT is required for the startup of FMX2 system components. Supervision,
configuration and SW download of the modules is possible using this PC via a V.24
interface. The software download requires an initial program loader. The initial
program loader contains the boot SW and every function necessary to carry out SW
loading (local and central SW download). The NE's of the system modules transmit
their routing labels to the LCT/NCT using the boot SW and are displayed in the user
interface. The SW download is started and loads the appropriate data into the
FEPROMs of the central units and supervision units. Then this data is decompressed
and loaded into the RAM of these plug-in units and the corresponding channel plug-in
units (line cards LC's). If the data in the RAM is faulty, it is automatically reloaded
from FEPROM. If the data in FEPROM is also faulty, an alarm message PNV
(program not valid) is issued.
The data of every system module (e.g. configuration, SW version) is stored as invalid
data in the corresponding plug-in modules and can be checked with the LCT/NCT
(Exception: the data for the LC's is stored in the CUD).

For a SW update, the current SW version continues to run in RAM. The new SW
version is loaded into FEPROM and overwrites the current SW version.
If a malfunction occurs during loading, the current SW version of the FEPROM is no
longer available. The plug-in unit can no longer be booted. The loading procedure
must be repeated. After new SW is loaded, a reset must always be carried out so that
the plug-in module can reboot.
Channel plug-in units of the same type can be exchanged during operation and are
automatically loaded with the data stored in the plug-in unit CUD.
Channel plug-in units of different types which can be exchanged while the system is
operating can lead to the following error messages:
Faulty SW, if no data for this type is stored in CUD,
Faulty configuration data (e.g. ISDN data cannot be loaded to the ports).

These errors do not influence the other channel plug-in units. These errors can be
corrected by SW download or reconfiguration of the data.

CPF2 software
For each interface module type (CIM), firmware has to be loaded into the CUD plug-
in unit by SW download. Each transmission module (TM) of the CPF2 already
contains firmware which guarantees the functional capabilities of the module. Should
the firmware be updated, the current file should be loaded into the CUD by means of
a SW download. The firmware is not displayed in the file system of the CUD and will
not be taken account of in the general file transfer (upload) to the line cards. When a
further module file is loaded onto the CUD the previously loaded file is deleted.
With an update command to the CPF2, but not a reset of the CPF2, the software is
loaded from the CUD into the interface/transmission modules and stored there in
non-volatile memory. Each module can be accessed separately. Each interface
module can store two SW versions.
Thereafter the firmware must always be activated using the FW activation command.
This command overwrites the old SW version with the new version. When the
configuration of unit CPF2 is called, the activated file number of the interface/
transmission module is registered.

The System software is to store under the an-aps directory. The name of the System
software must be identically with the description into the stock list. In this case, the
ACI find the Software for download automatically and compare the hardware with the
defined SW in the Stock list.

WARNING
Mostly the S-APS is delivered with the documentation under the same directory
name as the S-APS. Please copy only the S-APS directory under the an-aps
directory and the Documentation under an own directory, other case the ACI
has problems to find the Software files.

Into the Stock list the p-aps is assigned to the module hardware. The Software
description for the modules in the stock list must be the same as in the S-APS for the
P-APS. If the ACI brings an error message to find the P-APS file, please compare the
file name in the stock list with the file of the P-APS.

There are two kinds of Backup

1. The Database backup. This Backup is done by the Administrator only in the
Database backup are stored such things as Network map, DCN structure, SNC
etc.
2. The Network Element (NE-) Backup:
The NE-Backup can be done by the ACI- NCT as well as by the LCT.

In the NE-Backup the all configuration data as cross connections or port
configurations are stored.

Backups must be carried out in order to bring the FMXII/CMX system back into
working condition if there is a malfunction and to keep data losses as low as possible.
This is referred to as backup.
Every user should carry out these backups in certain cycles. The duration of these
cycles depends on the number of changes in the system.
Starting a backup:
with the menu item "Backup"
with the menu item "Restore"
Contents of a backup:
Configuration (cross-connections)
Parameter (impedance)
Settings (loops)
These backups can be accessed if necessary or in case of malfunction. This is
possible with the menu item "Restore".
