Headmasters Corner
It is hard to believe that we have now reached the first half term break of the year but, looking back at what has been
achieved, I can certainly see that the children are ready for a rest.
The Geography field trip to Wales last week was, as always, action packed and I thank Mr Jones and Mr Cann for their
hard work and congratulate Year 8 on everything they achieved.
Last Sundays trip to the Cheltenham Literature Festival was again a most enjoyable day
out and I would like to pass on my appreciation to Ms Case and Mrs Gooch for
organising such a stimulating day. Last year the children met with Emma Thomson and
this year did not disappoint with the children meeting David Baddiel and Prof Robert
Winston.
Last weeks Open Day was very busy
and, as always, the children left us
very proud in the way that they
conducted themselves; it is lovely to
hear such nice comments being
made by our many visitors.
Thank you to the many of you that
came to speak with teachers in our
two Parents Evenings earlier this week.
After the break we hope to include some photographs of this
afternoons Harvest Festival and the official opening of the new look
Senior Library.
Now, for some staffing news. Miss Garcia will be leaving us to return to
Spain during the break. We thank her for all that she did for the school during her half a term here and we wish her every
future success. Miss Fox is no longer working in the boarding house. Mr Perez and Miss Hale will continue to work in the
house together with Mr & Mrs Glanville. Thanks to Miss Fox for all her help during her time in the house. Sadly, I have to
inform you that our much-liked and popular Bursar (a description seldom given to a Bursar!), Mr Keith Nicholls, will be
leaving us at the end of the term to return to Suffolk. Keith has been with us for six years and has become a friend to us all
and I know he will be missed. Following on from last weeks interviews I am, however, pleased to announce that Mr Paul
Griffee has been appointed and he will start with us on 1st December to ensure that a smooth handover takes place. Paul
is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and is thoroughly looking forward to joining us.
In the hope that the wet weather subsides for a while we wish you an enjoyable and relaxing break.
Year 8 Geography Fieldwork Trip
What an action-packed, eventful week we had at the
Stackpole Estate in Pembrokeshire! The focus of the week
was an in-depth study of the impressive sand dunes at
Freshwater West (one of the dunes was home to the shell
house in the recent Harry Potter film, as well as appearing
in the Robin Hood movie). Year 8 were a pleasure to take
and all worked hard and were a mature, responsible
group.
We undertook a range of activities during the week:
coasteering around Stackpole Quay, a night line; a 12km
walk along the Pembrokeshire coast, mountain biking
around the estate, a beach clean at Barafundle Bay took
part in the John Muir Award Scheme and followed an
historic trail around Stackpole, home to the Campbells of
Cawdor (1689-1975).
Eco News
Congratulations to Roshan Patel on being awarded his
eco-monitor badge after his sterling effort heading our
recycling team.

spanning from Cheltenham, Worcester, Swindon, Stroud,
Gloucester, Droitwich, Hereford and the Forest of Dean.
Our current standings are:

U11 Boys = 5th (Otis Walker 8th)

Well done to all of our athletes on a commendable effort.
The 2nd meeting is at Malvern on Saturday 1st November.
Clothes for a Cause
The next big clothing drive will be during the week after
half term with a collection on 10th November. parents can
drop off any good quality clothing, shoes, bags and belts in
the back lobby during that week. You can use any plastic
bags including bags for other charities. Last time we made
212 and are trying to beat that. If you have any
questions, please contact Sarah Preston.
Girls Football Club
This will start after half term on a Tuesday lunchtime with
Mrs Hinchliffe.
Lower School Request
Please can the children practise tying their shoe laces over
half term. It would help ENORMOUSLY when they are
putting their trainers and Astro-trainers on!
Dance Exam
Congratulations to Ella Howard-Robinson who gained a
Merit in her Grade 4 Modern Dance exam recently.
Congratulations Rohan
Rohan Howard-Robinson was part of cup winning Clifton
U10 Lavender team. Fabulous playing in all their matches
meant the team won four of their five matches and drew on
the fifth, earning them the cup. Clifton U10 Stripes played
an excellent tournament too, coming in a close second,
winning the Plate. Rohan has played for Clifton Minis
since the age of five, kept a close eye on by coach dad!.

Bonfire Night
Please save the date of 14th November for the ever
popular bonfire night celebration at school. This year we
will be staggering the start times to enable the younger
children to come earlier and have the option of going
home earlier. The Nursery and Lower School timings are
from 4.30 pm for food, sweets and glow sticks, 5.00 pm
disco and the bonfire lighting at 6.15 pm. The Upper
School will be supervised at school as usual until 6.00 pm
when they must be collected by parents unless boarding.
They can then watch the bonfire before making their way
to the colonnade for food etc and their disco will continue
until 7.30 pm. It is always a wonderful event so please
come along and support FOTM.

Cheltenham Literature Festival
Twelve book lovers and two teachers ventured off to the
Cheltenham Literature Festival on Sunday and had a
fantastic day meeting authors, listening to their writing
journeys and buying books. Here you can see the children
meeting Sir Robert Winston and David Baddiel, who has
just written an hilarious book called "The Parent Agency".
We also saw Christopher Lloyd, the Shakespeare man, who
really helped to make sense of Shakespeare in no time at
all. Angus found himself in costume in "Much Ado About
Nothing" marrying a bride he had never set eyes on before!
We also listened to delicious poetry being performed by a
range of actors and saw the great Jacqueline Wilson, who
has just published her one hundredth book - "Opal
Plumstead". The day was a real treat for us all and we
came back with lots of enthusiasm for reading. We look
forward to the next Festival.
A huge thank you to Mrs Gooch for all of her help and to all
the children for making the day so delightful.

House Talent Competition
Formerly House Music, the House Talent Competition is now an annual event to find the best and most entertaining talent
in the school. The afternoon started with a welcome to the adjudicator, Christopher Winter, a local musician and producer.
There followed a variety of instrumental and vocal solos from some of our schools finest musicians. Clarinet, trumpet,
flute, cello and piano solos intermingled with vocal performances and Aditi Mehendale topped the scoreboard with 25 out
of 25 for her stunning Bach Grade 5 piano recital.
This year there were two new TALENT rounds; namely PERFORMANCE and WILDCARD. The performers in these heats
deserve special credit as they designed and rehearsed their acts themselves with only a small amount of staff input. Dalis,
Talia and Rachel executed their Acro-dance fantastically for ALEXANDER. Roshan went on to play an inspirational drum
improvisation for CHURCHILL. He was drumming so fast that we could not see his hands! CUNNINGHAMS Georgina
and Tabitha gracefully performed their own contemporary dance routine.
The WILDCARDS certainly lived up to their name! New arrival, Victoria from Spain, stunned us with her mature rendition of
Count on Me. For CHURCHILL, Alex, Rohan and James absolutely brought the house down with their hip dance routine.
This was closely matched by a witty Take That masked performance by George, Alex, Henry and Tom. They really could
go professional.
Finally came the House Songs round. Song choice proved to be successful and ALEXANDER attained the highest marks
for this round, bowling us over with their rendition of Bon Jovis Living on a Prayer. They sounded like a choir in their own
right! CHURCHILL held their own, overcoming challenging technical difficulties without losing focus and performed Hall of
Fame by The Script very well indeed. CUNNINGHAMS song was Happy by Pharrell Williams which proved to have more
complicated harmonies but they pulled it together and went on to be overall winners of the coveted House Music/Talent
Cup! ALL children put in so much effort and energy into rehearsing and performing and everyone thoroughly enjoyed this
wonderful display of Tockingtons current Talent. Well done everyone, remember to feel proud of yourselves for a moment
before you move on!

News from the Library
The Library refurbishment team excavated
more than just books when they discovered
this miniature lesser-known dinosaur called
the Bibliosaurus. Its bones were expertly

palaeontologists, Lucy Allan-Jones and
Oliver Shutt, and the result can now be seen
on display in the Non-fiction section of the
library.
Poem to be Published
Anya Constantinescu has had great news this week as she is going to be
published in a poetry book marking the 30th anniversary of the Born Free
Foundation. Children from all over the country entered poems. Anya has
been invited to a ceremony later in the year to mark this great achievement.
She will then discover whether her poem is overall winner for her age
group. You will notice that the poem was written and entered for the
competition when Anya was in Year 5. When she goes to the presentation
evening, she will be in the presence of Virginia McKenna, whose life work
was saving lions like Elsa. Well done, Anya! We wish you every success
with the next round! This is the poem which Anya wrote...

There are animals on land,
There are animals in sea,
There are animals everywhere,
Living with me!

There are animals in trees,
There are animals next door,
There are animals near you,

have had fun too!
Photography Competition
It is time to get your cameras out again and get snapping

een and Diwali amongst many others. The closing date for

th
November. Entries should either be
