A. Statement of the Problem
How did we define propositions last
meeting? Will you define it for
us Caroline? We defined propositions last meeting
as an expression in words of an act of
judgment.
You have a sharp memory, Caroline
Proposition are an expression in
words of an act of judgment.

B. Statement of Generalization
For today we are going to talk about
two classes of proposition. These are
Proposition of fact and Proposition
of policy.

Have you heard of these? No yet Sir
Okay. Proposition of fact is
one that is concerned with the truth
or falsity of an act of judgment.
It aims at belief. It settles the
question: Is this assertion true?
While, Proposition of policy is one
that is concerned with the wisdom or
unwisdom, the expediency or
inexpediency, of a course of action.
It aims at action. It answers the
questions: Should it be done?
Should this course of action be followed?

Will you repeat what I have said about
the two classes of propositions Emeline? Proposition of fact is a class of
proposition in which one that is
concerned with the truth
or falsity of an act of judgment. It aims
at belief. It settles the question: Is this
assertion true?
While, Proposition of policy is a class of
proposition in which one that is
concerned with the wisdom or
unwisdom, the expediency or
inexpediency, of a course of action. It
aims at action. It answers the
questions: Should it be done?
Should this course of action be
followed?
Well said Emeline, you are really listening

C. Inference
Look at this example on the board.
Please read the first example, Jennylyn. Resolved, That elective city mayors are
more efficient than appointive ones.
Thank you, Jennylyn

That is an example of the
Proposition of fact.

Why do you think the example
is Proposition of fact, Marie? Because, it aims at belief. It settles the
question under proposition of fact.
What is that question under proposition
of fact, Nhoren?
Is this assertion true? Sir
Good observation, Nhoren.
Do you understand now the Proposition of fact? Yes Sir
Let us move on to the second example.
Will you please read it for the group
Presca? Resolved, That the Filipino women
should be disfranchised.
And this an example of Proposition of policy.
Why did I say so, Joyce? Because as we said, Proposition of
policy is a class of proposition in which
one that is concerned with the wisdom
or unwisdom, the expediency or
inexpediency, of a course of action. It
aims at action.
Thanks, Joyce.
D. Verification
Let us try to analyze two other
examples showing this class of proposition.

Kindly read example 1, May Quenne Resolved, That the term of office of the
President be six years, without
reelection.
Thank you, May Quenne! This is called
Proposition of policy.

Kindly read example 2, Lorgen Resolved, That the Chinese are a
menace to our national security.
Thank you, Lorgen! This is called
Proposition of fact.

E. Restatement of Generalization
Is the lesson understood now? Yes Sir.

So, will you differentiate again
Proposition of fact and Proposition
of policy, Cetadel. Proposition of fact states that it aims at
belief while Proposition of policy aims at
action.
Well said, Cetadel.

F. Evaluation
Let us try these illustrations on the board, identify
which one is Proposition of fact and
which one is Proposition of policy.
Also give your reasons why you said so.

Write your answer in a sheet of paper

Example 1
Resolved, That The Filipino woman of yesterday was better than the Filipino woman of today.

Example 2
Resolved, That Capital punishment should be abolished.

Example 3
Resolved, That City mayors should be elected by popular vote.

Okay, time is up. Submit your paper.

IV. ASSIGNMENTS

For your assignments
A. Cite more examples of Proposition of fact and Proposition of policy. Then, to be submitted next
meeting. This should be computerized in a short bond paper, double space, font must be 12 Times
Roman.
B. Read The proposition may not be formally expressed Ref. The Art of Argumentation and Debate
