HOW YOUR OWN MIND WORKS

MAN HAS ONLY ONE MIND, but he has two distinct phases or
functions
of the one mind. Each phase is characteried b! its own
phenomena which is pecu"iar to itse"f. Each of these minds is
capab"e of independent action, as we"" as s!nchronous action.
#e ca"" one the ob$ecti%e mind, because it dea"s with e&terna"
thin's, and the other is the sub$ecti%e mind. (he sub$ecti%e
mind is amenab"e, and contro""ed b! su''estion of the
ob$ecti%e or conscious
mind. (he ob$ecti%e mind ta)es co'niance of the ob$ecti%e
wor"d. (he media of obser%ation are the *%e ph!sica" senses.
(he ob$ecti%e mind is !our 'uide in !our contact with the
en%ironment. #e 'ain )now"ed'e throu'h the *%e senses.
(he ob$ecti%e mind "earns throu'h obser%ation, e&perience,
and education. (he 'reatest function of the conscious mind is
that of reasonin'.
Loo) around Los An'e"es+ !ou come to the conc"usion
that it is a beautifu" cit! based upon !our obser%ation of the
par)s, the bui"din's, the beautifu" structure, the "o%e"! ,ower
'ardens, etc. (his is the wor)in' of !our conscious or
ob$ecti%e mind.
(he word objective means that it dea"s with ob$ecti%e
thin's. (he sub$ecti%e mind ta)es co'niance of its
en%ironment b! means independent of the *%e ph!sica"
senses. (he sub$ecti%e mind or the subconscious mind -
either term ma! be used - percei%es b! intuition. (he
subconscious mind is the seat of !our emotions. #e )now
without a doubt that it performs its hi'hest functions when
the ob$ecti%e senses are in abe!ance.
It is the inte""i'ence that ma)es itse"f manifest when the
conscious mind is suspended or in a s"eep!, drows! state.
(he subconscious mind sees without the use of the e!es+ it
has the capacit! of c"air%o!ance and c"airaudience. (he
subconscious mind can "ea%e the bod!+ tra%e" to distant
"ands, and brin' bac) inte""i'ence oftentimes of the most
e&act and truthfu" character. (hrou'h the subconscious mind
!ou can read the thou'hts of others, e%en to the minutest
detai"s+ read the contents of sea"ed en%e"opes and c"osed
safes.
(he subconscious mind has the abi"it! to apprehend the
thou'hts of others without the use of the ordinar!, ob$ecti%e
means of communication. So it is of the 'reatest importance
that we understand the interaction of the conscious and
subconscious mind, in order to "earn the true art of pra!er.
Now there are man! terms used in describin' the
ob$ecti%e and the sub$ecti%e mind. (he! are, as we to"d !ou,
ca""ed. (he conscious or subconscious mind, the wa)in' or
s"eepin' mind, the surface se"f or the deep se"f, %o"untar!
mind or in%o"untar! mind, the ma"e and the fema"e, and
man! other terms. /emember there is on"! one mind ha%in'
two phases or functions.
(he sub$ecti%e mind is a"wa!s amenab"e to su''estion+ it
is contro""ed b! su''estion. #e must reco'nie that the
subconscious mind accepts a"" su''estions+ it does not ar'ue
with !ou, but it fu"*""s !our wishes. A"" thin's that ha%e
happened to !ou are based on thou'hts impressed on the
subconscious mind throu'h be"ief. (he subconscious mind wi""
accept !our be"iefs and !our con%ictions.
It is "i)e the soi"+ it wi"" accept an! seed that !ou deposit
in it, whether it is 'ood or bad. /emember. An!thin' that !ou
accept as true and be"ie%e in wi"" be accepted b! !our
subconscious mind, and brou'ht into !our "ife as a condition,
e&perience, or e%ent. Ideas are con%e!ed to the subconscious
mind throu'h fee"in'.
#e wi"" use an i""ustration. (he conscious mind is "i)e the
na%i'ator or man at the brid'e of a ship. He directs the ship,
and si'na"s orders to the men in the en'ine0room which
consists of a"" of the boi"ers, instruments, 'a'es, etc. (he
men in the en'ine0room do not )now where the! are 'oin'+
the! fo""ow orders. (he! wou"d 'o on the roc)s if the man on
the brid'e issued fau"t! or wron' instructions, based on his
*ndin's with the compass, se&tant, or other instruments. (he
men in the en'ine0room obe! him, because he is the director.
(he! do not ta") bac) to the captain+ the! simp"! carr! out
orders.
(he captain is the master of the ship+ his orders are
fo""owed out+ "i)ewise, !our conscious mind is the captain, the
master of !our ship. Your bod! and a"" of !our a1airs
represent the ship. Your subconscious mind ta)es the orders
!ou 'i%e it based upon !our be"ief and su''estions accepted
as true.
Another simp"e i""ustration is this. #hen !ou repeated"!
sa! to peop"e, 2I do not "i)e mushrooms,2 then the time
comes for !ou to be ser%ed mushrooms, !ou 'et indi'estion,
because !our subconscious mind sa!s to !ou, 2(he boss does
not "i)e mushrooms.2 (his is an e&amp"e probab"! amusin' to
!ou+ ne%erthe"ess, this is an e&amp"e of the re"ationship
between the conscious and subconscious mind.
#hen a woman sa!s, 2I wa)e up at three o3c"oc) if I drin)
co1ee at ni'ht2+ whene%er she drin)s it, the subconscious
mind nud'es her, as if to sa!, 2(he boss wants !ou to sta!
awa)e toni'ht.2
(he heart is ca""ed the subconscious mind in ancient
a""e'ories. (he E'!ptians )new that the heart was the
subconscious mind, but the! did not ca"" it b! that name. (he
4ha"deans and the 5ab!"onians ca""ed it b! di1erent names.
You can impress !our subconscious mind, and !our
subconscious mind wi"" e&press what is impressed upon it.
An! idea that is emotiona"ied or fe"t as true wi"" be accepted
b! !our subconscious mind.
If !ou want a hea"in', for e&amp"e, 'et si"ent, re"a&,
breathe easi"!, immobi"ie !our attention, thin) of the hea"in'
power within !our subconscious mind+ a6rm that the or'an
of !our bod! is hea"in' now. As !ou do that, there must be no
resentment or bitterness in !our heart+ !ou must for'i%e
e%er!one. You can repeat this hea"in' process three or four
times dai"!. /emember that !our subconscious mind made
the bod!, and can hea" it a"so. 7eop"e are constant"! a6rmin'
the hea"in' of an or'an or a part of their bod!+ then ten or
*fteen minutes afterwards, the! sa!, 2Oh, I am 'ettin' worse+
I3"" ne%er be hea"ed. I am incurab"e.2 (his menta" attitude or
these ne'ati%e statements neutra"ie the pre%ious, positi%e
a6rmation.
If a sur'eon operated on !ou, cut out !our appendi&, and
in the ne&t few minutes ran bac) and opened !ou up a'ain to
see how !ou were 'ettin' a"on'+ then a ha"f hour "ater ran
bac) and opened !ou up a'ain, he wou"d probab"! )i"" !ou b!
poisonin'. You )i"" or pre%ent !our hea"in' b! usin' ne'ati%e
statements.
(here is a subconscious mind within !ou+ !ou shou"d
"earn how to use it in the same manner as a man "earns to
use e"ectricit!. Man contro"s e"ectricit! with wires, tubes, and
bu"bs, p"us his )now"ed'eof the "aws of conducti%it! and
insu"ation, etc. #e must "earn about the tremendous power
and the inte""i'ence within us, and use it wise"!.
Man! men are be'innin' to rea"ie the true importance
of the subconscious mind. In business man! men are usin' it
to achie%e success and promotion. Edison, 8ord, Marconi,
Einstein, and man! others ha%e used the subconscious mind+
it has 'i%en to them the insi'ht and the 2)now how2 for a"" of
their 'reat achie%ements inscience, industr!, and art.
/esearch has shown that the abi"it! to brin' into action the
subconscious powers has determined the success of a"" of the
'reat scienti*c and research wor)ers. (here is a tremendous
d!namo within !ou, and !ou can use it. You can a"so be
comp"ete"! re"eased from tension and frustration. You can
disco%er the abundant ener'! within !ou enab"in' !ou to
ener'ie and %ita"ie a"" parts of !our bod!.
#e are to"d, for e&amp"e, that E"bert Hubbard dec"ared
that his most important ideas came whi"e he was re"a&ed, or
wor)in' in the 'arden, or 'oin' for a wa")+ the reason bein'
when the conscious mind is re"a&ed, the sub$ecti%e wisdom
comes to the fore. (here are oftentimes inspirationa"
uprushes when the conscious mind is comp"ete"! re"a&ed.
How often ha%e !ou wondered at ni'ht what the answer
to a particu"ar prob"em was, and when !ou turned the
re9uest o%er to the subconscious mind, it 'a%e !ou the
so"ution in the mornin'. (his is the meanin' of the o"d ada'e,
2Ni'ht brin's counse".2 If !ou want to wa)e up at se%en
o3c"oc) in the mornin', and !ou su''est se%en o3c"oc) to the
subconscious mind, the subconscious mind wi"" wa)e !ou at
se%en o3c"oc) on the dot.
A mother ma! be nursin' a sic) chi"d, and she fa""s
as"eep+ but before she 'oes to s"eep, she su''ests to the
subconscious mind that she wi"" awa)en if the chi"d3s
temperature 'oes up, or when it needs medicine, or perhaps
cries. (here ma! be a thunderstorm 'oin' on whi"e the
mother s"eeps+ !et she is not awa)ened b! the storm+
howe%er, when the chi"d cries, she is immediate"! awa)ened.
(his is a simp"e function of the subconscious mind.
