International Student Research Paper Competition, 2013

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am extending my personal invitation to your students to participate in the International Student
Research Paper Competition, 2013, organized by the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.
The competition is being organized under the aegis of Quo Vadis 2013- the annual management and
cultural festival at IIFT, Delhi. It is a three day event to be held from 15th to 17th November, 2013 in
which the students from the other leading B-schools of India, namely IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR
participate. International Research Paper Writing competition of 2011 witnessed a phenomenal
response from the major B-Schools across the world and is expected to be bigger and better this
year.
The theme for the competition is Opportunities and Challenges for Investment in Retail Sector in
Emerging Economies. It will be a three phase event, the details of which are provided in the invite.
The authors of the top five papers selected from amongst Indian and international entries will be
felicitated at Quo Vadis 2013 at the IIFT Delhi campus, India on November 16, 2013. The winners of
this competition will present their papers at a special session at the conference while top 10 entries
will also be published in a commemorative issue which will be launched at the event. Cash prizes will
be given to the winners.
The last date for sending the abstract for Phase 1 is August 20, 2013 while that for sending in the
research entries is September 20, 2013. Please find enclosed a detailed note on the contest.

Golden Jubilee: An Eventful Journey of Five Decades (1963-2013)
An organization like IIFT grows from within but only after taking the nourishment from its
environment. The ever evolving character of the foreign trade sector continuously throws
up new opportunities and challenges which the Institute in its own way attempts to face by
re-delineating the contours of its activities.
In 60s and 70s, IIFT made significant contribution in human resources development for
exports when the country needed the skill development for external trade. In 80s, it evolved
into a Centre of Strategy and Development when international trade became an integral
part of international diplomacy.
In 90s, IIFT took up the role of a world class business school when country needed efficient
managers with the unleashing of liberalisation and reforms. And to-day, IIFT has emerged
not only as a leading B-School in the Asia-Pacific but also as a Centre for Excellence in
International Business and hub for strategy and research. It is one of the few institutions
which have a strong international foot print in Europe and Tanzania.
To commemorate the milestone of completing 50 illustrious years, IIFT hosted Honourable
President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee and Shri Anand Sharma, Union Minister for
Commerce, Industry and Textile on its Foundation Day May 02, 2013. Shri Mukherjee also
unveiled a bronze statue at IIFT Delhi Campus based on theme Wings of Wisdom.

Shri Anand Sharma released the Commemorative Volume of Foreign Trade Review and
presented its first copy to the President on the occasion. The dignitaries present on the
occasion were Dr. D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Shri S. R.
Rao, Chairman, IIFT and Secretary, Commerce and Dr. Surajit Mitra, Director, IIFT.
Dr. Mitra emphasised on the vision of IIFT- to become a Knowledge Centre, to become a
single stop hub for International Business Strategy, analysis and information

Competition Details
Sir Richard Branson, the great English business magnate remarked- Business opportunities are like
buses, there's always another one coming.
With rapid economic advancement and modernization in every sector, this quote clearly depicts the
wave of globalization sweeping across the business environment in the emerging economies, with
assurance of further transformation and penetration in not only the existing categories, but also a
solid consumption growth in new categories and products. The main drivers behind this
phenomenon are rising incomes, favourable demographics and increasing urbanization.
With a view to generate fresh ideas, research and viewpoints on the opportunities in retail sector,
IIFT, Delhi presents the International Paper Writing Contest as a unique platform for the best
students world over to battle it out through ground-breaking research and ideation.
Theme
Opportunities and challenges for investment in retail sector in emerging economies
Sub Themes
a. Investment in retail sector- Emerging country experiences
b. The organized and the unorganized retail in emerging economies- Synergies with investment
plans
c. Retail and the SME sector
Note: The applicants are free to choose any sub-theme in addition to those listed above.
Rules and Regulations
The event will take place in three phases
Participation is open to students from any under post-graduate course
The paper can also be co-authored by a team of 2 students from same institute and same course
There is no registration fees

Phases-
Phase 1
1. The candidates will be required to submit an abstract on the theme
2. The abstract should be of one page only. The word limit is 300-500 words
3. Please refer to Guidelines for Submission and Important Dates as stated below
4. The candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of the abstract

Phase 2
1. The shortlisted candidates will be required to prepare a research paper on the mentioned
theme
2. Word Limit for paper- 3500-4000 words
3. The entries must be original and should be backed by primary and secondary research data
4. The paper must have the following sections-
a. A cover page with the Participant Name, College, Program, Email ID and Contact
Number
b. Abstract (as submitted during Phase 1)
c. Executive summary
d. Main body- Motivation, present state of art, methodology, empirical/case based
analysis
e. Conclusion and policy implications
f. References
g. Any other section which might be relevant
5. Please refer to Guidelines for Submission and Important Dates as stated below
6. The top 5 entries will be announced on the date of results. They will be invited to the
institute during the annual management fest Quo Vadis- 2013 for Phase 3
a. The travel expenses will be reimbursed as per the following-
i. For Indian residents- 2

Class AC train return fare
ii. For Foreign nationals- Return airfare, Economy Class
b. The expenses of their stay in campus during the fest will be borne by the organizers
Phase 3
1. This phase will comprise of paper presentation
2. Esteemed panellists will judge the candidates and the top 3 positions will be declared
3. Further details of this round will be informed to the selected candidates after declaration of
phase 2 results

c. Any charts/diagrams/graphs should be properly labelled
d. Format of the name of the submission document and the subject of the mail:
